of support for the officer after hospital officials appealed for much-needed blood. ktvu's john sasaki reports. >> reporter: the fremont police officer todd young at oakland's highland hospital. this time a successful procedure on his bladder, but one that no doubt required more blood than for a patient that already used more than 60 points. also today, a much-needed shot in the arm for the bay area's blood supply. >> it's simple. just lay here. >> the red cross donor center in pleasant hill saw a rush of business, especially from police officers after a plea for blood in the name of officer young. >> when we needed help just a short time ago fremont was knocking on our door to help. >> reporter: he was clearly weighed down by the more personal stake he has in the effort. >> at the moment this is all

i'm able do for todd. he is in the hospital. we can't visit him. >> it's used for someone else. so it's a good thing. >> reporter: also here was michael morris, one of the 80 officers recently laid-off by the oakland police department. >> this is just a way that i can stay involved in the family, help out another brother, and hopefully, we'll get him a fast recovery. >> reporter: the red cross says this is always a time of great need because of the upcoming labor day weekend. >> blood is needed everyday by other people who are innocent bystanders of shootings. >> reporter: this center had about 75 donors, about three times the average sunday. donating blood typically takes about an hour, but on a busy day can take up to two and a half hours, so officials say

with a busy day expected tomorrow, your best bet is to make an appointment. in pleasant hills, john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 news. ktvu learns from oakland police sources that the suspect has confessed. 20-year-old andrew barrientos was arrested in san ysidro feet from the mexico border. is he still being questioned and is in the custody of san diego police. there is no word on when barrientos will be brought back to the bay area or when he may appear in cower. we have continuing coverage of the shooting on our website, ktvu.com, just click on the bay area news tab near the top of the page. san josi firefighters responding to a garage fire this morning discover a marijuana growing operation. the fire was reported 7:00 a.m. on the 4000 block of plainfield court in south san josi. firefighters quickly controlled the frames and say marijuana was growing in several rooms. investigators found growers had bypassed pg&e's wiring and that

they had installed their own, which appears to have caused the fire. knope was at home at the time. police are investigating. san josi police are also searching for the suspect who shot and killed two people and injured a third person outside an apartment complex. meantime, three san josi police officers are on administrative leave after shooting and killing a knife-wielding man. ktvu's maureen naylor with more on that citi' very violent weekend. >> reporter: heather, police say they have no information about the spike of violence this weekend. the most recent in south san josi. this apartment complex where police say officers shot a suicidal man this morning. a wooden board covers the front entrance to the man's apartment. >> they were banging on the door and trying to get in, but no one was answering. >> reporter: they say the 48 why are's estranged wife called police and say he shot himself with a nail gun.

when officers went into the apartment officers saw him hold a 10" knife and opened fire. >> the suspect confront fronting the officer wasarled and confrontational. so i really can't get into specifics, but he was confronting the officers. >> you heard five or six hots, pop, pop, pop, pop. >> reporter: the next door neighbor say the man was a butcher at a grocery store and moved in a couple of months ago. >> i know they lot their house and we're getting divorced and exchanged kids. sometimeez would have the little boy and sometimes the little girl. >> reporter: that was the latest violence in a number of violence in san josi. friday night a woman was shot and killed near santa claraur university. a 25-year-old man who knew her was arrested shortly after. around 10:30 last night police a say 26 and 27-year-old member, from san josi were shot and killed on san antonio court. that after a fight between two

groups. a 19-year-old woman was also injured. these deaths marked the city's 17th and 18th homicides for san josi this year. >> at this point, the accidences that have happened in the city of san josi this last weekend don't appear to be related. this has been a little out of the norm for us. it's been a very violent weekend. police say the number of homicides right now is slightly lower than this time last year. reporting live in south san josi, maureen naylor, ktvu channel 2 news. hayward police are investigating the shooting death of a man this afternoon. they found the unidentified man shot in the upper body. he was proindigenoused dead at hospital. investigators say they don't believe that the shooting was random. it's hayward's 12th homicide this year. investigators are looking for three or four suspects involved in a shootout last night with san francisco police. the gunfire broke out around 9:450 near the reardon heights

complex. nobody was hit by gunfire. police police say two plains- clothes officers identified themselves as police before the shooting began. a man is recovering from burns he sustained during a high-rise apartment fire in san francisco. as ktvu's diane guerazzi reports one woman plunged to her death. >> reporter: a massive high- rise on o'pharrell street. >> a heard people screaming fire really loud and then, like, probably half the city's fire trucks showed up. >> reporter: firefighter as recoveried to find a man suffering serious burns and a mattress on fire in the apartment and eight fors down a woman who landed in a tree. she was transported to to the hospital, where she died.

police say it's clear that she jumped out of window. >> you just see the walls and things like that and it it's a small apartment. it wasn't completely enflamed, but i guess the room they were it was pretty heavy fire. >> reporter: police took pictures on this balcony that jits out some 15 feet. they would not comment on whether she hit the balcony before lanning in the tree or whether the fire that may have started in a mattress could have been intentionally set. >> i'm not going to speculate on that. i'm going say that that is what the investigators are going to determine in the end, once they do all of their findings and interview people and so forth. >> reporter: atkinson lives in the east tower, the same building where the fire broke out. >> i slept through the alarm and i don't know how i did that, but i woke up, because there are intercoms in the rooms and all i heard was someone on the intercom saying if you are still in your apartment, stay in your apartment. the fire has been confind. >> reporter: the burn victim is

expected to survive. he is described as asian and in his mid-0s. county fire investigators are try to determine how and why this fire started. in san francisco, diane guerazzi, ktvu king 5 charles. glide memorial search honors partners that helped keep its clinic open. it serves about 3,000 people each year, whom otherwise would go without healthcare. ucf chancellor was at today's event and took a tour of the clinic. >> it could be impossible to really provide services without partnerships in the community. this very facility would not have been built without partnerships. glide officials say they have seen a 20% increase in patient visits so far this

team pulled out of dangerous, despite orders to the contrary. >> everything that was breathing in new orleans that we could pick up, whether it was said to us whether we could do it or not, we wore doing it. >> reporter: kutv caught up on schapelhouman on his active day, where his 14-person water rescue team pulled 500 people out of floodwater and he says to this day, he remembers the bravery of his fellow rescuers, but also what went wrong, the chaos and failure to properly gage the severity of the problem early on. >> the system lacked support and sustainable and shelter and medical support for even us as responder. >> reporter: schapelhouman says earthquake-prone californians with learn a valuable lesson, that everyone needs to be ready for a major disaster. >> biggest lesson from

tomorrow. lower temperatures and lighter winds helped crews in yuba county get a handle on a wildfire that has burned almost a thousand acres. the bullard's fire is in a rugged stretch. tahoe national forest. the fire started friday afternoon and has burned about 900 acres so far. currently it's about 20% contained. forest service officials have allowed residents back into their homes after evacuations yesterday. there is no word tonight on what caused that fire. a san quentin inmate who just won relief from the death pennal has reportedly hung himself. smithey was put on death-row in 199 for the murder of a san andreas murder, cheryl nesler. the district attorney's announced he was found mentallia retard and therefore could not be executived. police say smithey was found hanging in his cell early

. well bay area really cooled off this past week, warmest locations on in the 70s, but there will be another significant warm-up that develops over the next two or three days. right now the maps i can show you higher clouds to the north, along the north coast, towards eureka and patchy fog developing near owe coast. there is that organized fog bank closer to monterey bay and around salinas as well. as far as temperatures from today, you can see the range from right around 60 in pacifica and 64 in san francisco. most neighbors about 3-6 degrees warmer than yesterday's highs. san josi topped out 76 and

antioch at 79 degrees. patchy fog develops overnight after midnight. minor warming for your monday. we're expecting that warm-up for wednesday and into thursday. here we go, temperatures for tomorrow, the range from like around 60 coastline. quite a few 70s and ther warmest locations inland on track to reach the lower 80s, 81-82 degrees. rainshowers north of cape mendocino and showers and snow for the higher terrain of the sierras. this is all associated with this low-pressure system. another weak system will generate clouds. by wednesday and thursday you can see the fog that goes away. high pressure return and wire talking about another warm-up. thursday will be the hottest day of the period and temperatures inland will be in the upper 90s. it does not look as strong as
