explosion that killed people in san bernardino dino. also inspectors are examining whether work on the pime line two years could have contributed to the blast. some students and families are directly affected. others are pitching in to offer relief. margarita is here with more. >> students have been talking about the tragic explosion. some students live in san bruno. some of the one that is lost their homes is pellegrino and adam. adam now plays in ukanda emeonye but his father was in the house and suffered burns. adam ferrari is in san bruno. he was at work when it happened and she was texting and using facebook to fiend out if his family was okay. >> she was running around and she finally got out and started

running. homes destroyed. it's going to be a sad mome. once they get to my house, it will be up. i'm happy but it will be sad that everyone else lost their homes. >> we'll work our way to the closest glairs the red cross is receiving 400 dollars in donations collected by the fraternity. more than two dozen families have been allowed to return to their homes. but it will be a long time before they rebuild. 48 homes have been destroyed. here in san jose a case of a similar explosion may take time to get help from off duty it was. only one out of four firefighters lives in the city itself. some stay in lake tahoe.

the ranks are thinning. this summer the city laid off 49 firefighters. councilmember sam lacardo who represents the downtown area says the budget shortfall made layoffs necessary. they knew they would be facing a deficit. all city workes arers took pay and benefit cuts. firefighters rejected the idea. >> respect for the work they are doing. at the same time i think we all have to recognize it's a time to come together and tighten our belts. a little self sacrifice can go a long way. >> the contract expired more than a year ago. in november they are headed for arbitration. as far as location they say that shouldn't be a point for

employment. law enforcement confiscated methamphetamine. >> this house is boarded up now after the biggest drug bust in history. agents aid the home last month confiscating more than 470 pounds of methamphetamine. special agent bob cook says the sacramento methamphetamine task force will be going through the records of the three men who lived at the residence in every tip that came in, every trip these guys made, going through the records of contacts and if the vehicles crossed the border. >> reporter: through the house there was over $100 million of methamphetamine stored. officers had to wear hazmat suits while sorting the evidence for protection. signs are posted warning people to stay off the property. >> there could be ground

contamination. the property owner will be required to make sure there's no remediation needed on the property. >> a gilroy residence says it's scary thinking of the consequences. >> it could take his life innerstead of the people they are going for. >> reporter: investigators say they believe the drugs came from mexico and were being purified and stored in the house. it could be the work of a major mexican drug cartel. law enforcement officials say it's the biggest in the united states, but there's more to be broken up. this investigation is still ongoing. in gilroy, morgan. bob cook says methamphetamine is probably the worse drug of abuse because it has less than 10% drug recovery rate.

it came back as 98% pure. most students' lives revolve around campus and class work. outside the boundaries of san jose, there are opportunities. >> want a way to expand your horizons and link yourself to the world off campus? local nonprofit organizations need you. nearly 40 are at san jose's communications for a last week. it gives students opportunities to learn public service and social v. michael fallon of the community of learning and leadership says university shouldn't just function as employee factories. >> we are trying to instill a spirit of community engagement in our students now while they are in college that will hopefully carry after they graduate. >> reporter: they are one partner in student engagement.

college students volunteer as mentors in the after-school program for elementary students many who are from low-income families. sans hose has helped to fill a mission. >> it doesn't matter the background, they can be engaged in own self learning through education, arts and technology. >> reporter: they summarize the philosophy as whole child, whole family, whole community. the community thrives on the time and energy given by volunteers and the experience can have far-reaching benefits. prefer told me civic engagement is vital to the future of the country and for the issues of population growth and starvation. it starts with engagement here in our communities at home n. san jose, jean walker, update

news. how you manage your time could affect how much stress you have. counseling services are showing what students can do to better utilize their time and how time management can help in the long run. >> rent, excel spread sheets, rocks and dish soap. this isn't a science experiment. these are analogies they use in a time management workshop. peck says the key to efficient time management is prioritizing. >> fit more of the little rocks in, you can fit them in. that's the benefit of time management. >> peck says although time management is beneficial to everyone it's particularly important for college students to manage their time well. >> reporter: you have classes and family responsibility.

because you have additional responsibilities and additional roles, i think your time management needs to be a little bit sharper than even somebody who's working fundamental. >> kamal is a junior student who transferred. he says he came to the workshop as a requirement and see if there are new techniques to better manage your time. >> you need to do all the things you need to do, you need to manage your time. >> reporter: while spread sheets and checklists might not work for everyone, lynn says there's one-on-one route that might help everyone. >> get a planner. get it and use it. more than once a day. you have to look at it. >> more workshops like these are held through the smart. students often starve themselves and then wolf down a

pizza late at night. how to eat and stay healthy. ashley reports from the seminar of mindful eating. >> reporter: students packed the center for the mindful eating seminar. what they are eating and when they are eating and why they are eating. >> i'm not eating lots of food during the day. >> reporter: christina is teaching the 5ds of mineful eating. delay eating, determine if you are really hunger, distract your hunger, distance yourself temptation and decide how it handle your urge to eat. >> a lot of nutrition is educating people and speaking to people whether it's one-on- one or large scale.

>> reporter: sjsu alum judy garcia is from the women's and infants center in san jose. she shows people one-on-one on what to need to children. >> help them with the food guide and guide them to what they could eat to be healthier. >> reporter: garcia remembers eating unhealthy just like the mindful seminar discussed. she ate fast food, drank soda and drank coffee to stay a wake. students can come to the health center to make an appointment with a nutritionist who can assist them on how to eat healthy. a prolife organization displayed graphic pictures of aborted pictures of fetuses on campus this week. the group called live action bay area targets college campuses.

right. they knew mayor gavin newsom was running for lieutenant governor gut the name they didn't know is active lieutenant governor. san jose city council is known for being an eco-friendly building. now san jose' state university are catching the green wave. >> they are auditing climate and energy control. catherine curbings is eager to train students to make a difference. >> the biggest issue in our society for the next couple of centuries. if not san jose' state university, i can't think of a better association to engage. >> almost half the energy in the united states is from residential and commercial use. curbing says the green wave movement will help combat this

period the legislature has gone without passing a budget. governor schwarzenegger and lawmakers disagree on the cuts to make to meet the deficit. you heard it before that 20 years down the line those tuition payments and student loans will be worth it. a new forbes magazine is backing it up. forbes ranked san jose' state university 14th in the rate of success. move over harvard. a survey released this week show that is corporate recruiters are facing state schools. the wall street journal interviewed 30 different industries and says students from state college and universities better hires because they learn practical skills and they like drawing

from large populations. this month marks the 200th anniversary of mexico's independence from spain. a flag raising ceremony at city hall tuesday symbolized the connection san jose has with mexico. mayor chuck reed and councilmembers presented the proclamation on david figueroa. they were treated to a performance of mexican folk dancing on the plaza. festivals and a presentation with activist deloreas. the festival is in several locations downtown and you can see student contradictions at the library. what exactly can you see and what is there. we ask jamie austin. >> reporter: jamie what can you tell us about zero one. >> it's a giant art and technology festival based in san jose taking place september 16-19. >> how far across the board to do your events and programs stretch. >> they stretch wide. we have exhibitions and 12 public art installations. on friday night there's' festival. saturday we have a parade and we have public projections throughout downtown san jose. >> what kind of events are put

on? >> largely art exhibitions. we have two hundred artists representing different countries. south hall at the convention center is definitely the central hub where we have our information booth and there's a lot of free activities students should check out. >> what can we expect to see? >> live music, interactive installations. we are blanketing downtown with art and technology. >> how can people get involved? >> they can get involved by coming out. we have a information desk on south hall. friday our street festival. saturday we have another green free festival on south first street for people to check out. >> what sets you apart from other organizations? our focus on silicon valley and what makes this area unique with art, technology and

innovation and bringing to the public. >> that was jamie austin. students walking around campus may have noticed a chair. this they started this tradition in 1916. it symbolizes wisdom and the plank is a sign of courage. they won't tell us how they placed the chair in its perch. no one has reported seeing a spider-man type maneuver. advertising students gathered for a campaign that brought a major car manufacturer to campus. sjsu are working on a competition to introduce chevy to the campus which is the company's target audience. >> this is a competition. we'll be doing a whole chevy actual campaign on campus for everybody to get to know the

very beginning. we start the slow on the road. that might have been because of the atmosphere. >> in the game lasecca completed 20 of the his 26 passes and two touchdowns. the spartans look for their first win this weekend against southern utah. the sjsu women's soccer team looked pumped up early as they took the field for a home game. sjsu was fluid as a team moving the ball around the field. the spartans leading early in the 1st half, senior midfielder sanchez gave san jose a 2-1 advantage scoring from 20 yards out. u.c. riverside had some chances to score but was unable to capitalize. >> it's nice to get the home

wins. hopeful keep it going. >> i thought today we played better. we are kind of building where we're going to be and preparing for conference play. i thought today was a. >> they will play their next game on september 26 at home against st. mary's. the playoff push is in full swing as it is san francisco giants look to make the post- season for the first time since 2003. we spoke to students on campus and asked the chances of the giants ending the seven-year playoff drought. >> i think they will because we have the talent. i think the padres. it's going to be tough. we don't have our lead-off hitter. i think the pitcher will make up for it. >> bullpen. sanchez pitches well and garner gets the run support.
