written down. >> some people were participating for the first time. lindsey leon got the courage to really contribute. >> i think it is important to put yourself out there and try. if you mess up, people are like you are sharing. >> whether you want to share feelings or hear others express themselves, the mosaic series is open to everybody. it is every month. on campus, morgue p began trujillo. >> that is the 19th year for the san jose festival. this time the festival has expanded with cultural programming throughout the whole year. margarita joined the festival this week at the children's discovery museum. she is live on campus to tell us more. >> reporter: the festival is part of mexican heritage

festival. the largest latino destination event of its type in the united states. it is going on for two weeks. music and family. two of the things that define mexican culture, brought dozens to the children's discovery museum sunday. they gathered to celebrate life and take pride in their mexican heritage. >> for our family, it is very important to keep tradition alive. for me, as a mother, it is important my son know about his culture and learn to love it. >> reporter: the little ones enjoyed dancing lessons and children's music. jessica torres teaches dance in elementary and high school, and she loves to see families experiencing the music in a friendly environment. >> so it is important to me to

pass on the tradition of mexico and other music and the dance styles. to build a sense of pride in our culture. and the not just for people for mexico, it is also from other nationality to enjoy the culture. >> this is what he loves. anything to promote it with my son, as he grows up. you know, these are our people. >> reporter: it started out as a weekend event, but now will span for the entire two weeks. it includes activities, concerts and things throughout the city of san jose. >> a san jose state student and two of his friends are organizing a concert sunday. johnson young found artists to perform for children with special needs and their families. >> just like any other kids, they are full of hope.

and you know, they just really deserve this opportunity. >> the concert will take place at the children's recovery center in campbell sunday from 10:00 until noon. every year, san francisco has a love fest parade. but not this year. organizers decided to cancel it, because they could not find a venue large enough. and in this case, size relates to safety. at least 19 festival goers were trampled to death at a similar event in germany. 400 others were injured. they were trapped as they tried to escape through a tunnel that had been closed. in san francisco, although the love parade is cancelled, events and parties will still take place this week. i'm sure there is a lot of people disappointed the parade won't happen. >> definitely, thank you. >> >> reporter: coming up, football has returned to spartan stadium. we will check in with the sports desk. and the men's soccer team

takes to the field. we'll show you how they messed up. but first, students give their reaction to the cancellation of love fest. >> i never knew we had a love fest. >> disappointment. it is always fun. i didn't go last year, but my friends did and i was looking forward to it this year. >> i have never been to love fest, although a lot of my friends have been. and i think i planned ongoing, but with it being cancelled, i can't do that. >> i'm sad, i was planning ongoing this year. so my friends and i are going to think of something else to do instead where i'm bummed. last year i heard there were a couple of death and his they decided to cancel it this year. i think it would have been a good experience to go out there

football. coming up, two losses. the spartans were looking for their first win of the season against southern utah. marissa was there. >> reporter: at the end, the students and fans came together saturday night for the opening game at spartan stadium. it was the first home game for brand new head coach mike mcintyre and his team. although san jose is coming off two devastating losses to number one alabama and number 12, wisconsin, they are facing southern utah in their home opener, whom they met back with and got a 42-7 win. the spartans were let out by their head coach. midway through the first the spartans would score a field goal. however, early in the second the thunderbirds would get a field goal of their own. and soon after safetys going up

5-3. brandon ruttily would run one in, spartans up. then a field goal taking the lead 11-10. both teams scoreless in the fourth, a 26-yard patch is completed to beam man. now a hand off for a six yard touch done. spartans 16, thunderbirds 11. southern utah would get the ball back and throw an inception -- an interception. quarterback and head coach mike mcintyre gave their thoughts on the win. >> we made a lot of mistakes and we have a lot of improvement to keep making. but their fight to the very end was, i thought, very, very impressive.

>> surprisingly in the fourth quarter, the whole time, i wasn't really worried about it. i knew if we got the ball, with time on the clock, i knew we were going to win the game. >> for some of the players, it is just the beginning. but for many, it is their senior year. running back dominique hundred sucker is reflecting on his experience. >> reporter: what has changed about you as a player? >> i would say the biggest thing is attention to detail. from day one, you really have to grow, as a man, and as an individual. and make sure you do everything that small, minute that goes past people's heads. >> reporter: up until this point, what has been your most memorable experience here at san jose? >> a lot of them. i can go all the way back to freshman year, hanging out in the dorms with all my buddies. or to the bowl game in 2006. those are the top two memories

i have so far. >> reporter: over time, how have you seen this team grow, as a group? > >> i would say again, paying attention to detail. coaches are harping on us to do small things right and care about each other and focus and have intensity out here. we are picking up intensity week by week. >> reporter: do you know what your future looks like after this season? >> hopefully i can keep playing football. i'm glad -- great graduating. >> bouncing back after a tough loss is never easy. the men's soccer team looked to do just that sunday against visiting loyola. a fairly small crowd sunday, but those who stuck around witnessed an exciting finished the.

the spartan team took the field looking to pick up its fifth win of the season. having gone scoreless in its last game, s gsu scored a goal putting the spartans ahead. neither team would score for the remainder of the half. defense seemed to be the primary focus for both teams as the second half began and play became more physical. midway into the second half the spartans hurt themself (sic), receiving a yellow card and setting up a free kick for loyola. rafael baca proceeded to put his team on the board. it looked as if the game may go to overtime with the score still tied at one apiece, until

midfielder steven sanchez found himself on a break away and put the spartans ahead for good. >> this was a massive win for us. this is an ncaa tournament team. beprayed i think extremely well. >> reporter: -- we played extremely well. >> coach teaches us to never give up on the play. keep going with it. i turned around the ball was there and you know, we practice every day one-on-one finishs. it is an incredible feeling. >> the spartans will look to keep the wins coming as they take on the university of san francisco sunday at 7:30 p.m. s gsu opens league play on october 3rd against sacramento state. it was a good week for the oakland raiders as the civil and black won their first win of
