>> it came before a raucous home crowd on the final day against a very stubborn san diego padres team. fred joins us with highlights of the game and the player reaction. >> this was not easy for the players. you know what, not fans for the easy. you want easy go root for the yankees then. that's easy. but being a giants fan that's terrific torture. giants needed three games to beat san diego just once. that victory finally came together. buster posey got his 13 homerun of the year to make it 3-1. the clinching shut out and brian wilson strikes out will venables. giants win the west division with the second best record in the national league. let the celebrations begin in homes and bars, in the streets and in the stands, and mostly in the locker room. >> i mean, i'm just stuttering my words right now. i'm just so excited being in here with all of these guys being able to celebrate this and push forward. >> i've never been a part of

so today's game was critical. john sasaki has more on the fan's reaction to the drama. [ applause ] >> reporter: not since 2003 have the giants and their fans reached the post season. >> this is fabulous. it's so exciting. >> this is great. i've been waiting for this a long time. >> that was delicious. it had to come down to the last game of the season. but it comes with style. >> reporter: but getting here wasn't easy. >> it is crazy. >> reporter: this was the team's first chance to win the national league west over the padres. after two straight losses fans were getting nervous. just ask this couple sporting their brian wilson beards. >> never racked to the brim but nothing you can do. stay positive and rock and roll. that's why we grew these beards. >> correct. >> john said the fans need not worry about the team. >> you can talk about momentum and all of that type of stuff.

for a nice vacation. >> this morning the state department warned that al qaeda and affiliate organizations- continue to plan terrorist attacks. and added u.s. citizens are reminded of the potential for terrorists to attack public transportation systems and other tourist infrastructure. >> i mean, yeah, i will be cautious and watch where i'm travelling to. but other than that, nothing else to be concerned with. >> reporter: sfo manager on duty carol spear told us the airport security systems remain the same today. >> we have not been asked to change any of our security procedures. and we have a high security procedure level anyway here. so we are just continuing it as normal at this point. >> reporter: u.s. and european security experts have been concerned for days about a terrorist attack similar to the one in mumbai, india in late 2008 which targeted tourist hot spots and left more than 160 people dead. now experts say britain, germany or france could be the primary focus of a terror

attack. bomb threats have already forced evacuations at the iconic ieffel tower twice in the last two weeks. >> it has the ring of the government knows it's a threat. it's an increasing problem. so what they really want to do is protect themselves if they warned you. we are not hearing that there is any specific information about targets, locations or timing or any really valuable advice to americans about what they can do. >> still travelers told us they were appreciative of the. >> well, i think the bigger danger lies in the unexpected. any time they expect anything gives you an idea they are on the wall ball. >> they are asking travelers to have easy access to information or help as needed. at sfo, can of the ktvu. >> a san jose kidnapping suspects led police on a chase to at least two bay area counties was taken into custody after he jumped off an

overpass. police say at about 10:30 last night the 26-year-old man kidnapped his ex girlfriend and the couple's 11-month-old daughter from a house on waverley place in san jose. officers lated spotted the truck and tried to stop the man but he refused. he then drove north on highway 101 to daly city and then led the police south on to i280. the suspect then crashed his truck at the woodside road exit. threatened his former girlfriend with a knife. and then jumped about 30 feet on to the pavement blow. the woman and baby were not hurt. >> dozens of santa clara residents are out of their homes tonight after fire raised through their apartment building. ktvu's maureen naylor is there where san jose firefighters were called in to assist. maureen? >> ken, we are standing in font of the saratoga manor apartments off new hall street in santa clara. the 30 or so people who live here sanity stay here tonight because there is fire damage and no power. most of the damage starts at the roof.

the four upstairs apartments behind this were severely burned. but thanks to the help of neighbors everyone got out safely. jeanette peered into what has been her home for the past six years. firefighters warned her apartment was one of the worst damaged. >> i know he said it's bad. but i told my friend, i said, well, it's not as bad as what we think. but it's worst. >> reporter: firefighters say the fire started at 12:45 this afternoon. this cell phone video was taken shortly after. >> we first saw, like, the back building over there just big black smoke and, like, really red orangey flames. and we were just so scared. >> we started knocking on the door. i didn't know. i was cussing at everything like get the out. just get out, get out. >> reporter: this resident says she escaped because she heard those warnings. >> i heard all of this commotion. so i went and looked. and i saw fire. it was very frightening. >> reporter: the cause of the fire is under investigation. but firefighters say it appears to have started in the attic and doesn't appear to be arson. >> it just ran through the

attic. and as you can see up there, we are just looking at charred remnants on the roof. so the roof overall four of these is basically gone. >> while the fire ran through this apartment, firefighters showed us the apartment next door where a fire stop kept the flames from spreading. >> without that, it could have turned the corner here. and we could have lost the whole thing. >> this evening, some residents retrieved clothing. others left with pictures. a firefighter went into jeanette's kitchen to get her diabetes medication. >> i didn't get out with anything because we had to get out right away. but i am just thankful that aim i'm alive. that i came out alive. just in time they called me out. because if it would have been a little bit later i probably would not be alive today. >> reporter: investigators plan to return here tomorrow to figure out the cause of the fire. no word on when the residents will be able to return. reporting live in santa clara, maureen naylor, ktvu, channel 2 news. >> fire prevention week is underway in local fire agencies

say there is one thing you can do to protect your loved ones. fire safety experts say a smoke detector increases your chance of survival by 50%. smoke alarms should be installed on every level of your home, including the basement. you should check each smoke alarm once a month and replace the batteries during the change to and from daylight savings time. crews cleaning up a 1300- gallon fuel spill in the south bay will get started early tomorrow morning focusing on san jose's sewer system. a report came in yesterday that a 100-gallon tank on top of an at&t corporate building was leaking diesel. the fuel then spilled on to the city streets and into the sewer system. the fire department and numerous other agencies contained the spill this morning. but there is concern about the fuel that remains in storm drains. well, growing potash apparently become so mainstream in oakland that today two mayoral candidates smoke at the reopening of a so-called

marijuana superstore. the former i grow store another the oakland complex has changed its name to we grow. the renaming was grounds for celebration. among the dignitaries on hand were candidates jean kwan. >> this is a progressive community in its politics. we haven't had any real difficulty in convincing people this is about pain management, about prosperity. if it benefits our economy, terrific. >> so we grow store claims to have 60,000 square feet dedicated to products for marijuana farmers. we grow owners say they have franchised the store in 75 locations across the country. [ music ] another attempted sexual assault in walnut creek. neighbors say they are worried about the sexual assaults and they are worried about how the apartment complex is handling them. a little more than four weeks until the polls open. why californians will be able to make their voices heard in the november election starting this week. and many didn't even know him. the touching trib

. some residents of an east bay apartment complex say they are moving out after another attempted sexual assault at these apartments. it is the fifth such crime in recent months. ktvu's christian kafton reports. >> reporter: the latest attempted sexual assault at this apartment complex happened yesterday shortly before 7 in the evening. contra costa sheriff's deputies

say a 43-year-old woman was grabbed by a man who tried to force her into her own apartment to sexually assault her. deputies say the woman fought her way free but injured herself falling down the stairs as she made her escape. the suspect has not been caught or identified. but the victim tells the police that he is a white man, about five feet, nine inches tall, with a medium build and facial hair. the attempted assault was the fifth similar crime since june. women say they are living in fear inside the park regency apartments. >> i'm really scared. i'm really scared to open the balcony. and the window. >> reporter: police arrested 22- year-old antonio mutton on august 10th saying dna ties him to the first three attacks. he has pleaded not guilty. women say it appears that the latest assailant may have been inspired to continue the crime spree. all of the residents we spoke with said they are considering leaving. >> you know my neighbors, all of the girls are concerned. and we are just thinking about

some solutions like moving out maybe. >> reporter: she says she wants to move out immediately but told me the apartment manager says if she does she will be charged $3800 for breaking her lease. >> and they won't let me out. they said as of the fourth incident they won't let anybody out without paying anything. >> reporter: the manager at the complex declined to comment about the policy. several tenants say they will fight the fee but they say they are moving out no matter what. >> i'm leaving. i'm leaving friday. they can take us to court for my money if they want. but i am not staying here. >> reporter: investigators are trying to see if this latest attempted sexual assault is tied to the last sexual assault that happened here on september 16th. there are some similarities in the descriptions of the assailants in both cases. near walnut creek christian kafton, ktvu, channel 2 news. san jose police tonight are looking for a man and the woman he is accused of kidnapping. police say 18-year-old brian

adrong entered a house and confronted two women. he stabbed the unidentified 28- year-old woman multiple times and then grabbed 18-year-old judy la. investigators say a drunk fled with the woman in a black 2002 lexus sedan. here is the license plate. the unidentified woman is expected to survive. anyone with information regarding the whereabouts are urged to call police. >> early voting for the upcoming november election is set to begin tomorrow. that's when bay area officials plan to send out vote by mail ballots. they will see them within a week to ten days. the last day voters can put in requests fore vote by mail ballots is october 26th. the stanislav county democratic headquarters found the damage this morning.

the letters raan were spray- painted on the building. anarchist group by that name demonstrated in modesto yesterday but investigators say no one was claimed responsibility for the vandalism. the officials open to re-open the building tomorrow. >> you will find continuing coverage of the november election by going to our website ktvu.com and clicking on the election 2010 tab. those organizing events at san francisco city hall including supervisors are being asked to tone it down. the 1915 bow arts reopened after seismic upgrades in 1999. since then it has been the seen of dance parties, movie shoots and even open bars in supervisor's offices. the san francisco examiner reports that the building manager has issued new guidelines on the number of attendees aloud at parties as well as the noise levels and the alcohol consumption. the city council is set to take a vote on george lucas's plan for a new state-of-the-art

movie studio on mayer island. he hopes to occupy 160-acres of the former military base. with construction on mayer island studios to begin early next year. the same property has been eyed by others, including truro university hoping to expand. but those plans were cancelled due to financial challenges. in new jersey, hundreds of people gathered in silence on the rutgers university campus to remember former student tyler clement. the 18-year-old freshman committed suicide almost two weeks ago after his sexual encounter with another man was secretly streamed online. many of those who paid tribute tonight said they didn't even know clement. students, staff and community members lit candles tonight and stayed silent for 30 minutes. prosecutors say his roommate and another student used a web calm webcam to broadcast the encounter. both have been arrested on invasion of privacy charges. the israeli president is

expected to make his first statement on the derailed peace talks between the palestinians and israelis. they started to build on the west bank. leland reports from jerusalem. >> reporter: things are rather bleak. i talked too high level on both sides. start with the palestinians first. they said essentially they are not returning to the negotiating table until israel totally stops settlement construction on the west bank. essentially they said israel has a choice. either settlements or peace. the high level israeli also said this is pretty much black and white. essentially no matter how much international pressure is put on the israels they are not going to totally stop construction. the israels are giving themselves some wiggle room for some type of agreement curtailing building but not actually stopping it. the official called this a grey answer to the question of settlement that would apiece the settlers and the palestinians. the issue are these large settlements on the west bank which is land the palestinians want for their future state.

the israels agreed to a construction freeze in order to get the palestinians to the negotiating table. but when the freeze expired on november 26th they started building again and that's when talks broke down. while there are no high-level am talks both side are talking with mediators. they are putting tremendous pressure on the israels to stop the construction and the palestinians to return to the table. george mitchell has been spending countless hours with both sides trying to bring everybody to a solution. this marks the end of the holiday season here in jerusalem. and if you look at the two papers as everyone has gotten back to work today, beth of the main hebrew papers talk about how internal political pressure has started to get to prime minister netan yahu that might encourage him to change his position on the settlements. in jerusalem, leland vittert fox news. >> a foreclosure flap. what an executive at a bay area based bank admits to doing when it came to signing foreclosure

. as of today the federal government will no longer be able to bail out businesses with a program known as tarp. the troubled asset relief program. president if george bush signed the in 2008. originally intended to buy the so-called toxic assets of banks and other lenders. some say it saved the nation and the world from an economic depression. but the man in charge of auditing tarp told congress earlier this year it just made banks bigger. and without financial reforms there will be another financial crisis. experts say losses from the program are expected to be less

than $66 billion. a wells fargo executive has admitted to checking only the date on hundreds of foreclosures he signed. the admission was part of a lawsuit filed in washington state that is now dismissed. wells fargo said it was confident the foreclosure documents are accurate. but three other lenders, including bank of america and chase stopped thousands of foreclosures after similar practices became public. state attorneys general are pressuring the industry to make sure documents are executed legally. in news of the world tonight, in pakistan suspected militants attacked and set fire to at least 20 tankers carrying oil to nato and u.s. troops stationed in afghanistan. three people were killed. it is the third such strike inside pakistan in as many days. officials say the move was likely in retaliation for the deaths of three pakistanis that were killed during a nato air strike. >> in somalia at least eight people are dead and 18 injured

as u.n. backed somali troops battled u.n. fighters. 24th have been attacking the militants with machine guns. they managed to capture several strategic positions but militants still control much of the southern part of the african country. somalia has not had a fully functioning government in almost 20 years. >> in brazil official vote returns show the country's leading candidate russa has been forced into a runoff. russa was hand picked by israel's current president to be his successor. if elected she would be the country's first female president. a candidate, though, needs to get 50% plus one vote to win outright. she has 47% of the votes. the runoff election is set for october 31st. the wife of the muslim cleric who wants to build an islamic community center near ground zero says her family has been getting death threats.

>> it comes down to dignity. no one, i don't care if you are not military, no one should be buried with what the fells did to him. >> reporter: this is a case of free speech versus privacy rights. the court will also weigh in on the case of texas death row inmate hank skinner. skinner says he's innocent of the triple murder he is convicted of committing. skinner argues he has a civil right to request dna evidence testing post conviction to prove it. >> all the district attorney has to do is turn over the evidence and test it and let the chips fall where they may. if i'm innocent i go home. if i'm guilty i die what's so hard about that? >> it will open the flood gates to frivolous lawsuits clogging the criminal justice system. other high profile cases include california's attempt to ban the sale of violent video games to children. an appeals court said the law violents the first amendment.

the court will also consider a challenge to an arizona law cracking down on businesses hiring illegal immigrants. opponents argue federal law jumps state efforts. >> the federal government says we have immigration laws. arizona throws up its hands and says yes, but you are not enforcing them. >> meanwhile the newest justice kagan is taking to the bench for her first term which also marks an historic first for the supreme court. three women serving at the same time. however, justice kagan has already recused herself from 25 former cases. because of her work as attorney general she is withdrawn because of conflict of interest leaving the split of 4-4 decisions as the term kicks off. kate baldwin, washington. >> it is possible the issue of same-sex marriage in california could reach the supreme court this term. the 9th circuit has scheduled oral arguments in the proposition 8 case for december

6th. microsoft has filed a lawsuit against motorola claiming it has infringed on the smart phone patents. the software maker said motorola phones that use googles android software step on microsoft technology. the functions in question include sync row annoying e- mail calendars and contacts. microsoft filed a claim with the international trade commission. a spokeswoman for motorola said the company had not seen the lawsuit and could not comment. 15 million verizon customers will get a refund on their october or november bills as part of a $90 million settlement with the fcc. federal regulators say beginning in 2009 verizon wrongly charged customers for some data or internet sessions. the average customer can expect a $2 to $6 refund. fcc is considering punitive damages against verizon. >> efforts to clean up san francisco's waterfront get the green light from the governor. schwarzenegger signed a bill to

[ music ] >> just a few days ago talking about plenty of sunshine and record heat. a completely different story for today. over the next few day more clouds. the cooler weather pattern will stick around at least over the next 2-3 days. on the maps i can show you this. quite a few clouds on place just offshore and right around the sierra. back in the bay area the lower clouds have been increasing over the past few hours near the coast. and already a big fog bank pushing back into the blair and already a few patches inland as well. this was the scene looking out towards the bay earlier this evening. the temperatures on the cool side. opal in the 60s to the lower 70s. see some neat breaks in the clouds. more clouds expected overnight. gusting winds for monday. the overall partly cloudy theme stick with that monday, tuesday and also into wednesday. the satellite radar you can see a bit of activity. a few light showers and sprinkles earlier this morning.

the main action has been heading out to the east. right now we just have some lingering low clouds. cool weather pattern once again for your monday. as this next system moves in from the pacific. temperatures tomorrow opal in the lower0s. around 72 to 73 degrees. wind speeds on the increase. could be gusting to 30 miles per hour. strongest winds will be right near the immediate coastline. probably in fact the small craft advisory is posted offshore once again as we head into monday. see some rain showers here. the main impacts will be right around sierra right around lake tahoe. here is the forecast for tomorrow. showers are developing. the possibility of a few thunderstorms. and snow levels are down about 8500 feet. and then into tuesday, showers are likely. could have gusts approaching 70 miles per hour. snow levels come down to 7500 feet. a little bit of a dusting for the higher terrain in the sierra. back here in the bay area we are tracking some rain chances. not a lot to show you for tomorrow. the slight chance of a sprinkle up towards napa county
