♪ another day of living. ♪ . complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is the 10:00 news on ktvu channel 2 news. the search forever suspects tonight after gunfire erupts at a party and the challenge facing investigates. good evening everyone, i'm heather holmes. >> i'm ken wayne. a lot more questions than answers tonight following a shooting at' party that left two people dead. gunfire erupted on the dance floor of the san leandro venue, but who was shot? who the suspects are and even who rented ute the facility to

begin with haven't been revealed. ktvu's john sasaki reports. >> reporter: monarch bay is a scenic golf course, but today golfers have been distracted by the sight of crime scene tape. >> i think tea very sad. >> reporter: golfers learned that a double-homicide happened last night. investigators say at about 9:45 gunfire rang out at a party inside wedge's restaurant. >> what the officers reported is people fleeing, running away from the building, fleeing at high rates of speed and cars, as they left the arab. >> reporter: paramedics rushed three people tot medical center. one of them died. another man was taken by on a friend to the hospital, where he died. the two other victims suffered minor injuries and now police are trying to learn information from the roughly 100 young

people, which they admit is challenging. >> dealing with people between the ages of 16 and 25, it's typical that they are scared for they are safety, especially knowing that homicide suspects are still at large. >> reporter: police add that they don't know who held the party or why. >> through the management of golf course, it appears that the application was either falsified or provided fictitious information. >> reporter: the information seemed to dampen the spirits of golfers. >> tease very sad the way our society has become these days. too many guns, when we grew up, guys just fought with their hands and no one ever shot anybody. >> i feel sad for their families who lost loved ones. >> reporter: police tell me they component what led to the shooting, whether it was planned or a result of a confrontation on the dance floor and they say they don't know if the victims were the intended targets. in san leandro, john sasaki,

ktvu channel 2 news. it was another nail bite he for fans of the san francisco giants as they played the atlanta braves in atlanta, but at the very end the game, the giants prevailed. >> ktvu's fred inglis joins us live pretty much atlanta. fred. >> reporter: heather, turner field is very quiet right now, but when most those 53,000 plus brave's fans came out of the gates in centerfield b they were loud and they were angry c. throughout the game they were using these nerf tomahawks and doing that outdated droning chant, trying to intimidate both the giants and their small following. it didn't work. the loud and large turner field crowd kept trying to sway the momentum in atlanta's fav, but it was held in check thanks to

where you can email ktvu your playoff photos. fans on the way to the raider again countered extra security as federal air michael jacksons hit the ground and joined bart police station. they conducted special patrols at clums-oakland bart station and officials say the idea behind today's special deployment was to refine and assess counterterrorism patrols in a mass transit setting, as well as provide a very visible deterrent. >> any time you have a large number of people in a confined area, it's a potential area. so we understand that and the transportation security understands that. >> security officials report no major incidents today. the federal air michael jackson program was expanded after 9-11 to cover all forms of transportation. a safeway store in concord is back open after a roster a gas leak forced it to close earlier today. firefighters, concord police and pg&e respond to the

reported leak at the store. a report came in after 10:00 of a strong odor he near the store's backroom. pg&e officials turned off the gas, but were unable to find any leak. an evacuation was not orders, but the safeway was closed for part of the day. the cause of odor is being investigated. disneyland busy is one description of the scene in san francisco this weekend as thousands and thousands of visitors poured into the city for excitement from the sky to the football field. ktvu's maureen naylor joins us from san francisco with more. maureen. >> reporter: ken, behind me is one big reason why this is one of the busiest weekends for some businesses here. also juxt next to the bay bridge the 884-feet long makin island is here for fleet week, add in the giant's game, the 49ers game and the burning man party, this city was packed. rowdy fans spilled out on the street at bloom's saloon in san

francisco to watch the giant's playoff game. the win wasn't the only reason that the bartender was toast, saying that business was up four times compared to a typically sunday. >> a great boost. we're in a winning mode. >> reporter: down the street, more than 10,000 partiers were at this potrero neighborhood for a punishing man decompression party. >> i pretty much expected a lot of time to get ovhere because of fleet weekend and burning mangression and the nine game. so a busy day. >> reporter: the blue angels were the biggest draw and lured rebekah peterson from southern california. >> we probably send $500 to $600 in a weekend. we get food and stay at really nice hotels and have a really nice time. >> reporter: at pier 39, a band took part in the fleet week celebrations. >> it's one of the biggest weekends. >> reporter: up surveyors at

eagle cafe, owners say the business is double, calling it "disneyland busy." >> it's been really great throughout the entire day and actually, it started friday. friday, saturday and sunday and i expect to to go over to monday, also. >> reporter: the weekend events were a dream for businesses, they created a nightmare for drivers getting into the city. evident by the backup at the bay bridge toll plaza. >> just on the bridge from berkeley all wait in. >> reporter: what was it like? >> it took me twices along to get here. >> traffic was bad, parking was bad, but we're used to it. >> reporter: the blue angels performed their last show today, but the ship will remain at pier 30 until tuesday. reporting live in san francisco, maureen naylor, ktvu channel 2 news. clean-up efforts at site of the last month's deadly pipeline explosion and fire in san bruno are expected to wrap up tomorrow. crews spent the last two weeks removing contaminated soil and debris from the 35 homes that

were destroyed. the september 9th pg&e pipeline blast killed eight people, and wounded dozens more. san mateo county officials say that soil will be tested for toxic substances, such as asbestos and dangerous metals in an effort to ensure survivors that the environment is safe to rebuild. meantime, a new report is out that shows despite having more than 400 violations during a six-year period, pg&e was never find. the san francisco chronicle looked at records from the california public utilities commission, which shows that pg&e has the most utility infractions in state between 2004 and 2009, but the watchdog agency never slapped the utility with a single fine. in response, pg&e said, "safety is its top priority." crews were able to control a fire today at the tesoro refinery in martinez. it broke out about 12:30 this afternoon in a holding tank

containing water and diesel fuel. a forespokesperson says a contractor working on the task suffered smoke inhalation, but is expected to be okay. the fire was put out around 3:00. a hazmat crew was sent to monitor the incident. los angeles police went on tactical alert this morning after an explosion in san pedro, but ped ro. police say a large firecracker damaged a lincoln navigator that belonging to a man away on a mexican cruise, but returned this evening. >> five minutes later, the police knocked on the door, and told us to get out because there was an explosion and evacuate the hotel. >> the all-clear was given several hours later and now

police are trying to find the vandal. whitman says the only thing missing from his suv is a gps system. the white house is expressing doubts that a nationwide moratorium on foreclosures is a good idea. four majorbachers, including bank of america have shut down foreclosure programs after discover of sloppy paperwork. the president's top advisor, david axelrod says the administration is pressing lenders to speed up reviews to restructure mortgages that are salvable. some democrats in congress with calling for a moratorium. the republicans said it would be bad for the housing industry. straight ahead, a grass fire silences two bay area radio stations, and fuels a labor dispute. and after getting stuck among live wires, what would you do next? find out what one paraglider said she would do. campaigning

. a fire in san josi took two radio stakes off the air and provided fuel for an ongoing labor issue with firefighters. a recently closed fire station was less than two miles from the fire location? nonetheless, crews responded in eight minutes, which is considered acceptable. ktvu's dianne guerazzi reports. >> reporter: this started as a

grass dpier off highway 101 and mckee road, but winds yesterday evening fanned it over five acres and 15,000 watts. two radio stations were wiped out as flames consumed their transmission towers operating out of this building. >>. >> i had calls like crazy saying we're off the air, what do we do? >> reporter: she manages a spanish-language station, whose transmitter lies in this rubble. along with vietnamese station, a.m. 1500. >>. >> concern right now is that we need to make it go back to air as soon as possible. >> reporter: the firefighter's union said the flames may have been contained senior had company and water tender 34 been in operation, but they have been closed since the beginning of august as five companies were eliminated and 49 firefighters laid-off. >> this is a tragedy result of a lack of adequate resources to

adequately put fires out and respond to emergencies in the city. >> reporter: today the firefighter's union offered to discuss new concessions on wages and benefits, not the 3% that the union offer, compared to the city's demand for nearly 9%. >> tell us what that number is and we'll take it to the membership. we want to get these 49 firefighters back online. >> reporter: but at union's news conference, a council member argued that until now, firefighters have not been realistic in their offers. >> that is a 6-point difference. what would be the tradeoff. >> reporter: theied that tradeoff will be discussed this week as mayor chuck reed saysly eagerly listen. >> whenever we are ready, we're ready. that is good news, but we need to see the details. >> reporter: mayor says the city has fewer firefighters because there is a huge increase in pension cost. >> it was either concessions from the firefighters or layoffs and the union choose

[ laughter ] ex-i'm going fly again. >> pg&e cut power to the lines and then grass valley firefighters used a chute to bring her down. asilions was not injured. social security checks will probably not go up next year. the federal government is expected to announce this week because of very low inflation, there will be no cost of living adjustment. the decision is based on formulas set by law, but anyls say a lack of a raise will

infuriate many voters just before the election. more than 58 million americans receive social security each month. president obama tried to rally democrats. the president appeared at a get out vote rally in philadelphia. mr. obama is balloting the perception that democratic voters are apathetic and republicans will win big in the mid-term elections. >> our job is not yet done and the success of our mission is at stake right now. on november 2nd, i need you as fired up as you were in 2008, because we have got a lot of work ahead of us. >> president obama also sharply critical of republicans saying their policies are to blame for the economy. today's event was the second of four planned rallies before the election. many anyls say republicans could pick up 40 seats to take

over the house. >> former new york city mayor rudy guillani to campaign for whitman. whitman won't be appearing with another big-name republican, sarah palin this week. whitman's campaign said she had another commitments. polls show palin is not very popular in california. meantime, former president bill clinton will stamp for jerry brown and gavin newsom this week. mr. clinton plans to appear with both candidates at ucla on friday and san josi state university next sunday. it's at the end of the chance to show an alliance after a meg whitman ad used old footage of clinton criticizing brown and brown lashing back against clinton. newsom could also use clinton's star power with the mayor in a tight race for lieutenant

governor. this year, candidates are adding high-tech arsenal, text messages. the candidates hope to capitalize on the trend. casey stegall reports. >> reporter: they have drastically changed the way we communicate and almost everyone has one. >> it's 290 million out of roughly 310 million that live in the united states today. so virtually every man, woman and chili in america has at least one cell phone. >> reporter: that is roughly 94% of the total population, but we're doing more on our mobile phones than just talking. texting has spread like wildfire. nearly 5 billion text messages are sent everyday in this country, and according to experain consumer reserve, 90% of them are viewed compared to 30% email. >> you may not read that email because it ends up in your junk mail folder, but you will read

>> the gay pride event was seen as a major test for the serbain government as it steeks join the european union. the protection of human rights is a requirement and it comes days before u.s. secretary of state, hillary clinton is excelled to visit. the days and hours are ticking down for the 33 trapped miners in chile. their rescue could begin wednesday. elaborate preparations are being done for every step of the way. patrick kaufman reports from the mine site in chile. >> reporter: there is only one thing everyone wants to know, when will chili's trapped miners be freed. the mining minister has an answer at long last.

>> we're going to have another three days, that is why we're foreseeing that probably we'll initiate the rescue process this wednesday. >> reporter: the steel casing of the mine will be completed by early monday. despite the long hours, rescuers have already put in, their boss says they are up to the final challenge. >> this is the most important task that we ever had in our life. so i think as a human group it's easier note vate than i ever faced in my life. >> reporter: officials concede that the rescue will be an ordeal fighter miners. one man at a time, they will be hoisted to the surface by the phoenix rescue capsule. likers up above will watch the miners ascend from a live, video feed to deal with my possible medical emergencies. the capsule is outfitted with an escape hatch and oxygen and will have to gently lower and raise hast-ton capsule with its

human cargo. this is when the rescue operation begins, but there is a debate brewing deep underground over the order in which the men will leave. >> they were fighting, because every one of them wanted to be at the end the line, not at the beginning. >> reporter: on the ground, mineer's he families make their final preparations, sending encourage messages to their family members. >> i write him to have faith and trust in god and for everything to turn out well, he needs to be strong. >> reporter: and strength is what all the miners will need to end what seemed like an eternity, hundreds of meters beneath the surface. in hungary, workers are scrambling to build new walls around a reservoir that holds toxic sludge before another devastating spill ao-occurs.

new cracks have appeared in the wall of that reservoir. meanwhile the owner of the metal's plant apologized and offered his condolences to the family of seven people killed and injured. in afghanistan, trucking carrying supplies for nato troops began to move across an important border crossing with pakistan today. pakistan it closed its side of a a u.s. helicopter killed two pakistani soldiers and then the u.s. apologized last week. during the closure, 150 trucks were destroyed. pakistan is a key american ally in the region. and in mexico, police headquarters came under attack last night. drug gangs are suspected of throwing grenades at the building. two police officers were injured. >> there have been similar tacks on government buildings, media offices and night clubs recently. drug cartels target police as they battle each other for control of the drugged it a.

flight a milestone. 370 customers signed up, paying $200,000 a piece for a trip above the earth. and google has been letting its robot-driven cars hit the road on freeways and city streets and recently on highway 1. humans inside the car are able to override errors, but google engineers say the cars are better than any human. they say a robot driver reacts faster and has 360-degree perception and doesn't get distracted, sleepy or drunk. google admits to one accident so far when a test car was rear- ended at a traffic light. federal maritime officials are looking for ways to stop the recent rash of whale deaths off of north calyx. an endangered blue whale and her fetus was the latest casualty. whales are drawn to the area by an aboundance of krill.

the gulf of farallones national marine sanctuary will ask for ships to be equipped with sound systems to warn whales of their approach. legendary soul singer solomon burke has died. he was 70 years old. burke's hits include "dry me." and "everybody needs somebody to love." while not becoming as famous as james brown or maven gaye, he was covered by the rolling stones and wilson pick et. burke died today in amsterdam, oreportly of natural causes. what the nfl commissioner thinks that the 49ers and raiders should do

. weir wrapping up a beautiful bay area week, plenty of sunshine all weeklong except some patchy fog near parts of immediate shoreline, but still tonight, mostly clear skies and warm temperatures stick around the next few days. we have clear skies, a little bit of fog near parts of the coastline in the san mateo coast, loris to monterey bay, but we have a fairly strong northerly breeze and with that, the fog will be on the decrease, at least overnight tonight into your early monday morning. as far as temperatures from today, most areas warmed up about 2-5 degrees from yesterday's highs. can you see the 70s for san francisco, the 80s towards concord and antioch and san josi at 82 degrees. fair skies for this evening and

temperatures will continue to warm up for your monday. tuesday, warmest locations approaching the mid-90s. for your monday, most areas in the 70s, right near the immediate coastline and temperatures could be flirting once again with the 90-degree mark by 3:00 or 4:00 tomorrow afternoon. there is a weak weather system up to our north and really won't have much of an impact on our forecast for tomorrow. as it moves through, high pressure is going spring and strengthen over the next few days, especially by tuesday. that will be the warm-up and a bit of a breeze. sunny skies on tuesday, most areas in the 80s and 90s. windy in the hills and whenever you have offshore wind and in the month of october we have high fire dangerous and as a result, the national weather service issued a warning lasting until 6:00 wednesday. offshore wing gusting to 35

looking for pumpkins on tuesday with 90-degree heat out there across the bay area. >> bring the sun block. >> temperatures rebounding. >> thank you, mark. and nfl commissioner roger goodell is ken couraging a joint stadium between the bay area's two pro-football teams. goodell says the oakland raiders and san francisco 49ers should look into sharing a stadium. both teams currently play in aging, but separate stadiums. santaaur voters approved a new stadium in the south bay for the 49ers. the raiders have no immediate plans to leave the oakland coliseum. goodell made the comment at halftime against the raiders game and the chargers. he pointed out that the new york jets and new york giants stair share a new state-of-the- art stadium in new jersey. a day of first and the raiders do something that they have haven't done since 2003 and the 49ers do something that she haven't done since bill
