[ music ] >> from the school of journal ism at san jose state university, your source for what's happening with a fresh perspective on today's issues. you're watching update news. >> hello and welcome to update news. i'm morgan. >> and i'm margarita. thanks for joining us. >> the cuc system is feeling the effects of the statewide budget deficit. on friday csu in long beach released a proposed tuition that will affect the students this semester. they will not know how much money they will get until the next semester. as kate kaufman shows us they are trying to be proactive to stay away from another financial crisis.

>> mid-term exams are now over and students are being althoughing to enroll in spring semester classes. while advanced enrollment begins on monday many students will be hit with another financial burden when they go to pay for their classes. the media relations for sjsu say the proposed increases come from the state's physical calm budget directly. >> what we found we were well funded csu but not fully funded. in order to make up the difference we were going to increase the tuition by 5%. >> the fee increases will be a two% process. it amounts to $105 per student. this fee will add up to more than $175 million among all csu campuses. the second phase will be a 10% increase next fall. if but they stole -- they told us many students won't be

affected. >> half of our undergraduates simply don't pay tuition because of financial add. aid. >> although some students don't pay tuition mathematics save more venezuela does. as the first graduate in his family, he is not going to let the fees stop him. >> i would probably think about going to community college. but you know, everyone has a different opinion. >> the csu board of trustees will vote tuesday on this proposal that will affect all csu campuses and students this coming semester. on campus kate kaufman, update news. >> national studies suggest that students who live on campus are more likely to graduate than commuter students. starting fall 2011 some in coming freshmen will have the option to commute. melissa hire reports. >> san jose state university is widely viewed as a commuter school. but a new policy will take effect next fall that might

change that stereotype. starting fall 2011 all first- time freshmen who live more than 30 miles away from sjsu will have to live on campus. this policy which was created before interim president done castings returns is based on the sums that non-commuters can get a better education. >> i don't like the label commuter campus. i don't like it at all. i think it suggests to some people that our students are different or less than residential students. >> reporter: under this new policy freshmen who have graduated from high schools more than 30 miles away from san jose state must live in residence halls. angela geiger spent her freshman year living in the dorm. and it gave her the chance to network within her major. >> if you live here you have more opportunities to get involved. to go to, like, the clubs that maybe their meetings are 7. if your class ended at 3:00 and

you would go home and not stay around to go to some club meetings. >> it includes furniture and utilities and a mandatory meal plan is required for those living on campus. it will add more than $12,000 to tuition. sophomore sherry patio didn't qualify for freshman aid her freshman year. she said socially living on campus makes sense. >> you meet people and you can build your network. and everybody is experiencing the same thing. but financially i think that it's a really bad idea. >> reporter: as it stands now the university encourages people to live at the university for at least two years. in coming freshman from out 0 of town won't have the option to opt out of the dorm live life. >> there are some cities that are exempt from the on campus housing policies. a list of cities and some additional exceptions are in the fall 2011 commission

admissions familiar pamphlet. on campus melissa hire on news campus. >> the sjsu committee to hire the candidates to succeed the interim president don castings. the meeting is open to students, faculty and the general public. those who attend can voice any concerns to the csu chancellor and committee members. the committee to shrek the new president is made up of people who represent everyone from alumni to community groups. >> there is someone for everyone on that committee. so people can always funnel their comments to the respective individual. >> reporter: after finalists have been selected there will be a daylong series of interviews where the general public will have more opportunities to submit any comments. international week begins at sjsu. it's a chance for the students and faculty and staff to become immerse emptied global opportunities. activities include the peter lee memorial lecture,

international coffee night and the great global breakfast. the week will kick off with a chance for sjsu students to study in due bay this january. a talk on destination did you observeai will be held on monday at 11 a.m. >> muslim female students gathered on campus this week to raise awareness about hijabs the head scarves worn in muslim. it was to challenge students to wear a hijab to see what it feels like, oppressive or liberating. it means modesty and keeps you from being objectified in society. it is associated with radicals and terrorism but the feedback they are getting on campus has been positive. >> a lot of people are saying, like, i don't respect that. i respect your faith and i respect your right to practice and i want to support you so i am going to wear it. that has been the reaction i am getting. a lot of people are just curious to see what it's like. >> the muslim students plan on organizing more events like

this in the future. this is islam week on campus and to celebrate the mosaic cross cultural are holding days of events to learn more about this misunderstood religion. they are there to talk to suhab web. she explained that sharia law and islamic isn't only a way of system but a way of life. it includes moral and religious that deals with muslims and it governs the life of worship. >> we wanted to expand not only for the muslim and non-muslim community the literacy about this. and then to give them maybe an interest to study further. and gain more understanding of the islam muslims. >> reporter: students and professors asked many questions about killings and terrorism and web clarified that murderers and blowing of buildings are forbidden in sharia law.

the recession has made many americans believe that the middle class is being hollowed out and the banks are to blame for this mess. here is where all of this anger is coming from. >> to many people this quiet suburban street with two car garages and single family homes is what the american dream really is about. but how does it feel to lose it all to foreclosure once the economy goes down? it happens to a lot of people including this woman who lives with her parents when her parents lost their san jose home. >> i am sad about the situation. we have been living there many years paying month-to-month payments and having it all come to an end like this is just very depressing for us. >> reporter: some homeowners say the banks unjustly foreclosed on their property. improperly processing their documents without offering them assistance. the government has already

started investigations over unjust foreclosures and some congress members are even proposing criminal wrongdoing charges. >> these guys are, i mean, they are abusive. they are arrogant. they are out of touch. and what they have done in the foreclosure crisis is an outrage. >> reporter: but banks say people are losing their homes because they defaulted on their mortgage as a result of unemployment. bank of america, jp morgan chase and wells fargo did not return our calls for comment. financial experts say it's understandable that people who are not able to pay their mortgage cannot stay in a home for free. but they also say that banks should offer alternative assistance plans before changing the locks. doctor pagany from the financial services in the state says some of those assistance plans are not successful. >> because the amount of the loan is so big that even by

decreasing the interest rate will only help a few homeowners but not most of the homeowners. >> reporter: some banks have frozen foreclosures. others like bank of america and wells fargo continue to foreclose properties. being unhappy with your body can affect how you think and feel about yourself. a poor body image can lead to low self-esteem and eating disorders. they attended a workshop where students learn how to be happy with their physique. >> reporter: whether at the house center or counselling services students can speak to someone if they are not happy with how they look. at the health center tuesday students attended body image 101 where they learned how to be comfortable in the skin that they are in. nationalasha is a peer house educator who specializes in body image. she says the media has created airbrush perfection that's not

reality. >> body image becomes so distorted and it makes it so that natural looking women or regular folks don't feel secure in who they are. >> reporter: katrina is a junior bio chemstrip major and born with a cleft pallet. she walked with her head face down so people would not stair at her scar because people used to give her weird looks. >> i feel like my face is not sim metric call because of my car. and my nose is not well symetrical like a normal person. so it did affect me. >> this is why they give body image classes so women can own their body. >> college aged women because of that pressure of, you know, going from high school to being a "adult" that, you know, the positive images aren't there. >> reporter: sandra sanchez is a freshman nursing student who wants to be like those girls in

magazines in novella. she wants a flatter stomach and a nose job all thanks to the media and her parents. >> they say like you are chubby. you need to lose weight. you into he had to stop eating. >> reporter: sanchez says girls need to stop following what is shown on t.v. she is never going to be perfect. no one is perfect. so just be yourself. if you or someone you know is not happy with their body image and hurting themselves to achieve the body they desire, please get help. at the health center or counselling services located here at administration. on campus, ashley burnell, update news. still ahead on update news, arts and entertainment is on tap. an any rig or joins us with a look at one ssu club in the southland. >> cultural and spiritual traditions and diversity are on display at a student art exhibit. we will take you there. >> young citizens are encouraged to vote. but what about minorites? show you the missed opportunity for the group of young americans.

but first we asked sjsu students for this year's election results. who won, governor jerry brown or meg whitman? >> jerry brown. >> who won lieutenant governor? >> abel moldonado. >> who won the california senate seat? >> barbara boxer. >> did proposition 19 pass? >> no, it did not. >> who won attorney general? >> kamala harris. >> african american voters are located in key states and congressional districts which have the means to decide the balance of power in washington this mid-term election. live voters had a a low turnout tuesday with less than 5% showing up to the polls.

political analysts say that's one of the main reasons democrats fared so poorly. the republicans gained control of the house of representatives with a gain of at least 60 seats. but the democrats kept control of the u.s. senate. african american studies dr. stephen milner says there is a disconnect between politicians and african americans. >> they don't have much hope that politics will answer the concerns that they have in their daily lives. >> reporter: for the first time in several years the u.s. senate will not include any african americans. >> and andrea is here with arts and entertainment. >> talking about a drink that has been getting nationwide attention. when you think of arts and entertainment, a concert or an art exhibit might come to mind. but college students often punk wait the entertainment with a cold one. we're talking alcohol. a popular alcoholic energy drink among college students is creating the wrong kind of buzz. and have already been banned from two college campuses.

it is a drink that combines alcohol and caffeine and been nicknamed blackout in a can. there is health hazards from this fruity flavoured drink and the controversy. >> i had a friend pass away three months ago in a drunken driving. and what he was drinking was four loco. >> reporter: he got into a car in south san jose. friends say he was drinking alcohol including a flavoured beverage popular among college students. >> four locos not only get you drunk, but the energy that they give you is just outrageous. >> reporter: four loco comes in a 24-ounce can and contains 12% alcohol. also has as much caffeine as a cup of coffee. andrea rufo is part of the health and wellness promotion team and says that mixing alcohol and caffeine together is not a good idea.

>> when you mix them together, it gives you the coma awake feeling where you are awake but then actually you want to sleep or you wanted to knockout. >> reporter: the beverage comes in nine different flavours. these fruity flavours mask the taste of alcohol and may cause a person to drink more. four locos are sold locally and sell for under $3 a can. an affordable way for college students to party. they mix other alcohol drinks with the four locos which they say can increase the chance of alcohol poisoning. >> i can't say specifically only the four loco because i have never had one by itself. the only time i ever had one i was already pretty heavily intoxicated. >> reporter: the drink has been identified as the reason that nine hospital students at the university were hospitalized last month and have been banned on the campus. >> if it were banned on campus

i don't know how they would do that because the drink is sold and people still find a way to get it. >> the food and drug administration has been asked by some officials to review the safety hazards of the beverage. four loco is widely available at convenience stores across the country. but lawmakers including new york are working to get the beverage banned completely off of store shelves. san jose state university's philippine owe club traveled to cal state fuller ton for friendship games, a competition among california university and college club. the goal was to take home the spirit pride, unity and friendship trophy. but the club also competed for the overall prize of friendship games champion. annie rig or is live on campus to show how it worked out. >> the team brought home two huge trophies. this one just over nine feet tall is for the spirit pride friendship and unity category.

this one is for the games themselves. the spartans came home from the 20th annual friendship games. >> the day started out cold and wet but that didn't stop the spartans and the other schools from cheering their hearts out. friendship games coordinator says this year's event will be one to remember. >> the most people we have ever had. the most vendors. the highest profile performance we have ever had. so this is one that really set the bar for the next generation. >> the team for this year's spar tans was zombies and the weather made it easier to look the part. the spartans zombies danced and competed for points. sjsu along with santa barbara and san francisco state made it to the final round with where the top three schools competed in the last games known as final rampage. the team with the fastest time in this game took the trophy. with much surprise, san jose state university became the returning champions for the

spirit pride, unity and friendship. sjsu also won the big title, friendship games champion. [ applause ] >> san jose state plans oncoming back next year with even more interesting and over the top team to defend their title. live on campus, annie rig or, update news. >> muslim students put their artwork on display monday at the mosaic cultural center and talked about the inspiration behind their creations. muslim art students want people to understand how their artwork influences their culture. it let's them openly express their beliefs. caligraphy is a central feature so it stands apart from western work. yet the artists want their fellow colleagues to realize they are a diverse and open culture. this was inspired by the phrase a picture is worth 1,000 words. the exhibit allows students to appreciate the art from the muslim culture and accept it from their beauty no matter how diverse from their own. that does it for arts and

entertainment. back to you, ladies. >> thank you. >> there is more to come on update news. check in with the sports desk as the decision was reached with two teams on the verge of leaving the western athletic conference. it came down to the final seconds for the sjsu football against new mexico state. we will have the highlights of the dramatic ending. the streets were full of black and orange as the fans celebrated giants first world series victory in san francisco. take you there when update news returns. but first students sound off on their favorite sport. >> i love to play water polo. the competition is like soccer but moving around in the water and using every muscle in your body. >> soccer need a lot of passion to play it. >> basketball because it is just a great way to interact with people. you get a great workout.

you get to meet all kinds of people. you don't have to be great at it. you can just kind of get on the court. >> basketball definitely. playing ever since i was 5-year- old. i don't know. i just like it. it's like five on five. you know it's you against the other guy. who wants it more. >> my favorite sport is soccer. the adrenaline and it is exciting and physical. constantly doing something. not a minute to waste. >> my favorite sport is basketball. and i like it because i grew up watching it because of my family. >> now here is the sports report. >> whoa, spartans sports but the battlefield is so good. definitely we are going to begin. for the first time since the giants moved to san francisco fans in the city can finally celebrate what they have been dreaming of for a long time. a world series trophy.

so what did the orange and black give to their fans? a huge parade that stretched throughout downtown. nearly one million fans flooded the streets wednesday to celebrate their team's first world series title since moving to san francisco from new york 52 years ago. the parade began at 11 at the intersection of montgomery and washington and ending at the civic center plaza. the fans pushed against one another fighting to get the best view of the stage when the players spoke. and climbing up to any point to get the highest vantage point. merchandise vendors filled up the side streets as almost every fan was dressed in giants gear, even their pets. officials say the parade was the biggest in san francisco history. no wonder fans were excited. >> i thought the parade was awsome. never saw anything like that. never seen this city like this and i'm from around here. so it's pretty cool. >> reporter: the parade ended up at city hall where fans did their best to exit peacefully.

after looking impressive in their loss against fresno state you will wonder when number 2 will look very easily at new mexico state, right? but the aggies had other things in mind. update sports reporter melissa loveit was there from start to finish. >> reporter: mexico state had one thing in come at the start of the game. both head coaches were looking for their second win of the season. sjsu started strong scoring a 20-yard field goal their first stride downfield. new mexico state came right back as matt christian throws a 31 long pass to rogers in the end-zone. tdaggies. midway through the second quarter the quarterback matt christian runs the ball for 28 yards, diving into the end- zone. new mexico 14, san jose 3. in the second quarter, harrison wade would already miss one field goal. on his is gone second attempt he would be wide right.

going into the half new mexico 17, san jose 3. the start of the third, the spartans took charge. quarterback jordan completes the pass to brandon rutly and he would run and run, taking it to the house for a 75-yard spartan td. halfway through the third sjsu quicker wade bounced back making a 35-yard field goal. sjsu13, new mexico 17. after a new mexico state field goal to start the fourth, san jose came back with a 12-yard td touch by noel grisby. the spartans do not stop there. after holding the aggies to a field goal a pass to beechman puts the spartans up 27-23. after trading scores the whole fourth quarter with five seconds left on fourth and goal, the aggies rogers catches the game winning touchdown. the spartans would lose in

heartbreaking fashion 27-29. >> i love coaching. i'm enjoying what i'm doing. but yes, it is hard you know when you don't win. it's hard. that's what you put your time in do and you try to do. you feel for these young men when you are trying to find every way to help them be successful. because they are putting a lot of time into it. that's where you bothers it you most. >> the spartans have one week off before they face utah state. melissa loveit, update news. >> mcintyre is more than halfway through his first season as head coach of the spartans football season. he tells us how he thinks this team is doing on and off the field. here once again is sports reporter melissa loveit. >> these young men are working hard and working to improve. we haven't had as much success as we would like to. but i have watched them grow as a team. watched a lot of young individuals thrown into playing team really mature. off the field they are doing what we ask them do did to do.

doing well in the classroom and going class and studying so we are really proud of them what they are doing here. >> reporter: so many of the players have gotten injured but are they team players for this team? >> yes, they have come around. it is hard to be a leader when they are not out there in practice or in the middle of the game being able to be in the huddle or make a block or make a catch or make a play where they could do that in the past. but yes, they are doing everything they can in their abilities while they are injured. >> reporter: are you already looking to next season or is your mind still focused on this season? >> no, my mind is still definitely focused on this season. we need to be able to do everything we can for the end of this season and get it done. no, i am not looking forward ahead to the next season or anything yet. i want to finish this one strong. and finally the western athletic conference has reached a deal with fresno state and nevada regarding the departure of two schools from the conference. fresno state and nevada will
