justice. the man was wanted for killing his girlfriend and then abducting her daughter last week. now, tips had been pouring into police in rowanoak, virginia, about the girl's whereabouts. about today nearly 3,000 miles away in san francisco a confirmed sight. ktvu is now live with the latest development. >> reporter: well, heather, a sighting followed by an arrest. we are outside the safeway on fulton in san francisco. a safeway spokeswoman tells me that this shopping cart area right here behind me is where the police found and arrest that had virginia man and brought into custody the 12- year-old girl he was travelling with. the safeway spokeswoman says the parent never actually made it inside the store, but they were pan handling outside right here on this spot when a customer recognized them and called the police. >> 32-year-old jeffrey scott easely is now in san francisco county jail facing felony abduction charges. he fled virginia with his girlfriend's 12-year-old daughter a week ago.

days later the girl's mother was found murdered in her home. this december 3rd surveillance video from a west virginia wal- mart was the last reported sighting until outside the safeway. >> the witness felt that she had seen the suspect on a nancy grace television show. in this case we believe that is an accurate statement. >> reporter: that witness tip led to his arrest. >> they were on foot when they were contacted by the police. >> reporter: jaycee edgeerland works at the bank inside the safeway and saw the 12-year-old girl being questioned by the police. >> she just looked really innocent, you know like maybe she was just -- i don't know, she just looked kind of zoned, like zoned out. >> reporter: the girl was surrounded by what look like a couple of bags of personal surroundings. >> she had a lot. definitely it looked like a family of four to, like, carry around. but a lot of bags, a lot of luggage. >> reporter: like she had been travelling in. >> yes, it looked like she had

been around. >> reporter: a source with the san francisco police tells ktvu that easely drove the 12-year- old girl in the mother's car. somewhere along the way they ditch the car and took the bus in san francisco. right now the 12-year-old girl is in the care of child and family services. meanwhile detective actives are on their way to san francisco. they refuse to dismiss a challenge to the state's lethal injection procedures. the judge said he plans to resolve the suit by two death row inmates as quickly as possible and then claim the procedure causes severe pain which would be unconstitutional. but state officials say any problems at issue have been resolved with the new protocol. the judge scheduled a conference on the case for next friday. >> one of the inmates filing the suit is michael morals. the other is albert greenwood brown. both sentenced to death for the

murders of teenage girls back in 1980s. his death was set for december 30th and then blocked. they have not executed anyone since january of 2006. a possible claw has emerged tonight into the death of thousands of dollars of equipment from a high school. recently revealed surveillance footage shows something rather interesting. amber lee now with the new developments for us. >> reporter: heather, tonight belmont police shared with us what they called their strongest lead so far. investigators are trying to figure out who broke into this building and stoled the expensive computer equipment. >> kind of blurry as it is going by but you can see the overall shape. it's up here. not a sedan. so it looks like a compact suv. >> reporter: police say this surveillance footage from a security camera on campus shows this car leaving the high school at 9:40 sunday night

during the thanksgiving holiday weekend. the vehicle is seen heading north. investigators say it appears that the vehicle may be a ford escape or something similar. >> even though it's grainy, what are you guys hoping people can get from this? >> well, that it triggers somebody's memory that, you know, they may have seen this vehicle. >> reporter: we first brought you the story 11 days ago when the theft was discovered. 25 white macbecomes and 30ipod touches locked into this docking station were stolen. since then investigators have examined footage from dozens of cameras. >> it is obviously devastating for the students because it interferes with the program. you know, i am sure it is getting close to finals. >> reporter: he is the assistant superintendent for the high school district. he says fortunately the school received today loaner computer interests apple and a $5,000 donation from wells fargo bank. still the theft has been disruptive to students. he calls it suspicious saying

the thieves knew exactly which window to break to access the equipment. >> reporter: are you suspecting that it is an inside job? >> it is very difficult not to. >> reporter: think that it's an inside job? >> yes. only because, you know, it is a targeted break-in. >> reporter: the police and school officials say they hope the surveillance video, though grinnie, will lead to the thieves. the stolen equipment is valued at more than $50,000. reporting live here in belmont, amber lee, ktvu, channel 2 news. it was like old times at the white house today. bill clinton the former president holding forth before reporters. president obama brought him to the briefing room so that clinton could endorse the tax cut deal that benefits even the wealthiest americans like him. >> you know, i make quite a bit of money now. so the position that the republicans have urged will personally benefit me. and on its own, i wouldn't support it. >> you are in good hands. >> but clinton went on to say there is no better del out

there. and while president obama left to attend a party, clinton kept going for a half an hour. in the near the white house president secretary nor clinton's own aide could get him to stop until he was done. san francisco's civic center is aamong the state buildings that can be sold. the state plans to raise $1.2 billion by selling the buildings and then leasing them back. also included, the california public utilities commission on vanness avenue. the ronald regan. the matchup between meg whitman and jerry brown brought people to the polls and in big numbers. the final statewide results were certified today and they showed that 59.6% of eligible california voters cast ballots. now, that is the highest for an election in the state since

1994. and more people are choosing to vote by mail with 48.4% of voters mailing in their ballots. a member of the now defunct your black muslim bakery received the toughest possible sentenced to for kidnapping and torture. 26-year-old richard lewis was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. prosecutors argued lewis kidnapped a mother and her daughter and then tortured the daughter for yousef bay the 4th. he wanted it know where a drug dealer kept his money. the daughter did not know. >> an un specified number of wall greens customers found out today they were the victims of a security breach. the company is assuring them the hackers did not get their hands on sensitive personal information. but as ktvu's john sasaki reports, some victims are already seeing the impact of the breach. >> reporter: people go to wall greens for all kind of necessities, food, drinks, medicine, even christmas decorations. but now regular customers are learning that someone has

stolen their e-mail. >> i know how some hackers use the strategies to get our e- mail addresses. it is disappointing. >> reporter: they hacked into an unauthorized list of e-mail addresses. the company says that only e- mail addresses were stolen. >> no customer passwords, account information, prescription information, any other personally identifiable information was not at risk. >> reporter: but a company spokesman told me by phone today that the breach has led to some customers receiving spam e-mails. e-mails which walgreens said should be ignored. >> wall greens will never ask for any personally identifiable or sensitive information in an e-mail. >> reporter: but the danger of the cyber world has some customers at the store on vanness keeping a tight lid on all of their personal information, including e-mail addresses. >> unless they ask me. if i do what's the purpose, why do you need this, how is it going to be used? so i ask a lot of questions,

police say so are the criminals. what would you do if someone came up and grabbed that off your shoulder and then ran? >> a great question. i would probably, i don't know, chase after them. >> reporter: not a good answer. >> i wouldn't recommend chasing. i would recommend cooperating and being a good victim, calling a police and giving us whatever kind of suspect description you can. >> reporter: police are on alert in palo alto. in recent weeks there have been a rash of strong arm robberies in the downtown and shopping areas of this city. in some of the incidents, the robbers brandished guns. >> these are violent people. this is a face-to-face crime. it's not someone breaking into a car where no one is there. we don't want people to get hurt. >> reporter: this is the time of the year when criminals are out with the shoppers looking for people overloaded with bags and by themselves. the police say the savvy shopper should be aware of surroundings. >> i'm looking around, seeing who is behind me. and any suspicious characters. >> i don't park in a dark area. i'm aware. i look around before i go back

to the car. i check around the car to make sure nobody is there. >> reporter: police say always put shopping items away in the trunk. >> you don't want to give the crooks an easy target. one is an unlocked vehicle and visible objects that they can break glass and grab in and get the packages and leave quickly. >> reporter: this city is not alone. rob robberies, pick pockets pick up during the holidays. the one thing police stress is if confronted don't fight. it is just property. live to shop another day. live in palo alto roy lacuesta, chan chan. >> a man is being treated tonight in san francisco general hospital after being shot by a police officer. it happened this afternoon in garfield park near 26th and treat avenue in san francisco. police say the man attacked an officer while being detained for drinking in public. well, the officer shot the man at least once. that man is expected to survive. the officer was injured in the scuffle. and within the last hour, the

department told us that officer is expected to be okay. a man was killed this morning when the police say he crashed a stolen car off i-80 in berkeley during a chase. the investigators say the man veered off the freeway and then slammed into a tree. it all began just before 8:30 last night when an officer in oakland officer approached the suspect. well, police say the man then drove off, hit the officer and tried to run him over. that officer is expected to be okay. the police spotted the suspect about 9 hours later and began the pursuit. his name has not yet been released. but ktvu has learned he was a parolee. there is new information tonight about the transgender woman who received a letter from a dmv employee that she felt was threatening. the department of motor vehicles in san francisco says the worker has been suspended. amber said the letter condemned her to hell. guest also says she had gone to the office to get a new driver's license with her new gender identity. the dmv says the worker is on

paid administrative leave. oakland is waiting until january 3rd to raise parking fines $3. when the new state budget passed the surcharge increased from $10 to $13. cities are implementing the new free structure on their own timetable but face financial penalty for waiting. oakland decided to hold off in order to alert the public to the change. the commerce department fuelled the rally today. the nasdaq gained 20. it outperformed the dow this week rising almost 2%. connecticut's attorney general wants to know if google improperly accessed personal data it gathered while mapping its street view project. if the state doesn't receive access to that data by next friday, it will take the mountain view-based company to court. going will says e-mails, passwords and other items were accidentally collected from unsecured wifi networks when it

. a jury in salt lake city reached a guilty verdict today in the kidnapping case of a young girl that made headlines all across the country. former street preacher brian mitchell was convicted of kidnapping 14-year-old elizabeth smart and unlawful transportation of a minor across state lines for the purposes of sex. the now 23-year-old elizabeth smart was thrilled with the verdict. i hope that not only is this an example that justice can be served in america, but that it is possible to move on after something terrible has happened. and that we can speak out and we will be heard. once again, thank you so much.

>> smart had testified in excruciating detail about what she called nine months of hell before she was found and went home to her family. mitchell faces life in prison. an oakland man is set to be arraigned next week after being charged in the death of his infant son. the 4-month-old baby died last sunday at childrens hospital in oakland. police say they arrested william thunderhawk. the 26-year-old is charged with assault with a child under eight leading to death. the charge brings the same penalty as a murder charge. thunder hawks arraignment is scheduled for monday. >> an unusual situation people bought, smoked pot. ktvu's robert honda was there. >> reporter: the sparking santa provided holiday cheer at tonight's medical cannabis fundraiser inside the medix collective in san jose. organizers were determined to hold the event despite

district. stores on the street got together to throw a block party. they offered treats and sales. the goal was to get customers into the holiday spirit and spend some money. one store owner said earlier in the evening things were looking pretty good. hoping to see 25 percent more business than usual this friday night. >> holiday spirit transformed the lake shore avenue tonight as stores tried to draw in shoppers. the biggest draw might have been the free horse drawn carriage rides. free face painting for kids also drew a pretty big crowd w all of the holiday cheer they wanted to create a neighborhood spirit where people can feel safe and shop. >> we don't think they should have to go to a madam for that. we know the malls have more money and we don't have all of the beautiful decorations that they have but they don't have the communicate spirit. >> in case you missed it tonight you can catch the holiday festivities again tomorrow between 3-5 p.m. >> a big named music act is

[ applause ] [ music ] >> reporter: kid rock takes his show to southern california tomorrow night playing another free show at march air force base. about 3,000 fans enjoyed the show tonight. reporting live in fairfield, deborah villalon, ktvu, channel 2 news. the government will not contest an appeals court ruling that investigators illegally seized a list containing the names of baseball players accused of taking steroids. the justice department made that announcement today. the agency will not ask the supreme court to reverse the ruling by the 9th circuit court of appeals in san francisco. in september, the court ordered investigators to return the list of 10 had -- 104 players. the list had been seized in the 2004 raid of a drug mart. hazmat cruise in san diego county will spend their weekend

sifting through the ashes of a home that was used to make bombs. they need to make sure no dangerous chemicals got through the blaze. it was too dangerous to remove all of the chemicals and explosives inside. the home's renter pleaded not guilty to bomb making and bank robbery charges. the alameda coroner is trying to determine how a 90 missing doctor died. he was found behind a pharmacy on redwood we had a mile from his home. investigators say there are indications that he fell down the hill. his family says he would often go for walks in his neighborhood. he was reported missing on tuesday. and the family grew concerned because he suffered from dementia. >> well, muni uses so-called switchbacks to keep its training system moving on time. but for un suspected passengers suddenly dumped to the curb it can create a commuting headache. as rob ross tells us tonight the transit agency is now taking action. >> reporter: passengers say

they are all too familiar with switch-backs. >> i hate that. i hate that. you are going to work and everything. and i don't have time. >> reporter: muni says when traffic congestion or a mechanical breakdown occurs that delays the transit system switchbacks often kick in. the passengers are emptied out at a stop even if it's not the one they want while muni operators are told to turn the train around and head the opposite way. according to a new report switchbacks increased on three train lines, the l, m and n this year compared to last. >> it takes more time and you are late for your appointments or wherever you go to. i hope they improve it. >> this is late. >> reporter: here at muni's new line management center managers can monitor every train and every problem on a series of screens. officials say switchbacks help keep the system on schedule. >> people waiting to go in the other direction, if we don't do the switchback, if we didn't make a service adjustment they would wait much longer. so it cuts both ways.

. today vacaville police arrested a sex offender who they say was posing as a salvation army bell wringer. police say 47-year-old maurice was fired by the salvation army after the charity found out about his criminal background. but after his termination, he stood outside a big lot store and a gas station collecting money. >> his pot, unlike a tripod or a pot that the salvation army would normally use, his pot was actually a little pot that you would cook on a stove. >> the salvation army said he only worked for them for one day. the police were able to locate him by checking his whereabouts

from the gps device he had to wear on his ankle. contra costa county investigators say a second victim has been identified in the case involving a juvenile hall counsellor accused of molestation. 53-year-old thomas jewel was arraigned on molestation and child porn. they are not releasing the victim's age but said he appeared to have a counselling relationship with jewel. charges related to a second victim are expected to be filed before jewel's next court date in january. police and fbi agents believe there may be more victims. san francisco firefighters have another tool to help keep them safe. the department received five new industrial strength washing machines. the worker -- washers spin so quickly they can push out cancer causing particles from their clothing. the cancer prevention foundation spent $38,000 on these new machines. hats, working fires, the chemicals they are coming in contact with it has been proven

. while the unemployment rate still hovers around 10%, some of those people who do have jobs are going to office holiday parties. a poll shows that 6% of those asked said they are canceling their parties. well, last year that number was 14%. ktvu reports on the business of holiday parties. >> in the kitchen at this restaurant in the hotel st. clair, it is a flurry of activity as the cooks prepare for the holiday parties booked tonight. >> there is probably 500 people in the next two days in private parties there. >> reporter: manager davis

faris has noticed an increase at the number of holiday parties held tell hotel and restaurant last year. he says corporate business is coming back. >> people are spending a little more money. not as frugal or tight with their dollars as they were in the past. the parties are getting bigger. >> reporter: a poll out by business and legal resources found that there is a slight increase in the percentage of employers increasing their holiday party bulges this year. >> all of our holiday parties are sold out for the next two weekends. all of our meeting space is completely full. the hotel is very close to being sold out. >> at the fair month business is booming. the hotel manager says that over this weekend they are hosting more than 20 holiday parties. >> it's incredible. business is back. it's great. we are very excited. >> reporter: this celebration was held at the fair month. it was casual attire and they were given jackets and ipods were raffled off. a step up from last year but

mammal center tells us the sea- lion named silent night is still in critical condition. the 330-pound animal was found wednesday on a beach with pelt fragments lodged around its right eye. [ music ] well, we have been tracking rain for three days in a row. but the weather pattern is changing right now. that will set the stage for a dry weekend. you can see right now on live stormtracker 2 the rainfall was primarily north of the cape. but still quite a bit of low level moisture in place with partly to mostly cloudy skies. also still some fairly mild temperatures. in san francisco and oakland in the upper 50s. a few neighborhoods right around the bay right around the 60 degrees mark. this was the scene today lacking out across the bay. of course the clouds and the showers. mostly cloudy skies and dry this weekend. the next chance of a few showers could be moving back into the picture by tuesday of next week. here is a look at the overall weather pattern. an idea of the clouds beginning

to arc here. that's basically the signature of high pressure developing offshore. the storm track is moving up to our north. but at this time of year you have all of the moisture on the ground that high kind of moves in and squashes that. it forms a cloud and that's when we talk about the fog. this weekend will be dry. but dense morning fog especially for sunday morning. temperatures will warm up in a few neighbor. and by sunday for the second half of the weekend, the warmest areas on track to reach the upper 60s to right around 70 degrees. over the next 2-3 days our biggest concern will be the fog, especially if it forms in the central valley where the offshore winds develop. that could help import the fog into the bay area especially around the inland valleys and right around the delta. lake tahoe if you are heading there this weekend for tomorrow mostly cloudy skies. overnight lows in the mid-30s for tomorrow morning. upper highs in the afternoon. and expect more sunshine and a

forecast high right around 39 degrees. in the morning partly to mostly cloudy skies. once again dense pockets of fog out there. especially for the inland valleys. and then for the afternoon hours the readings in the upper 50s to mid 60s. call it 58 to 65 degrees with skies becoming partly cloudy. could be hazy sunshine deal by mid-day. santa rosa is 63. san francisco right around 60. san jose 65. morgan hill 63. by sunday we could be flirting with the 70-degree mark. the forecast ahead the five day forecast much the same weather pattern monday, tuesday and wednesday. there is a rain chance for tuesday of next week. not a big deal. a slight chance for wednesday. possibly more rain chances beyond that point as well. heather and mike but the umbrella away for this weekend. >> pull out the shorts, mark. >> right around 70 degrees in december is pretty good. >> thanks. >> well, dog lovers, animal
