complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is the 10:00 news on ktvu channel 2. >> drenching rain tonight around the bay area. first in a series of storms headed our way. good evening. >> i'm ken wayne. from the roadways to runways, stormy weather is causing problems across the bay area. while it's wet out there now, it's only going to get worse in the days ahead. ktvu chief meteorologist bill martin is tracking the storms, but we begin with mike at san francisco airport where there

have been flight delays all day long, mike? >> reporter: hey, ken, we know when it rains there can be issues. tonight we have issues here at sfo. i want to show you what's taking place on the tarmac. a couple of jumbo jets out, 747s. the international flights are getting out on time. it's the flights to the east coast, this small plane experiencing delays up to about 90 minutes. it's even worse for short haul flights, their weight, about 2- 3 hours. san francisco international airport, on a clear night, 120 nights coming and going every hour. tonight, that number is down to 54. it has been a day of delays and cancellations. >> our son is getting engaged tomorrow. >> reporter: a snow restricts the number of runways for approvals and departures. the back up can be seen inside the terminals. nice long lines formed by 150-

plus southwest passengers have the appearance of never ending, leaving some folks standing in it a bit confused. >> unbelievable. i didn't think it rained that much. it does in ohio, but i didn't think it did out here. >> reporter: every now and then it does. >> definitely wet. we should go. >> reporter: the impact could be seen from the sidewalks to the san francisco city streets where frustrated commuters honked their way to the freeways this evening. basically it's one big red line. brake lights from the east shore and tonight back at sfo, the tarmac packed with planes. some going, some staying. usually there's a story on a stormy night attached to every flight. i'm supposed to get to indianapolis, maybe tomorrow. >> not going to leave tonight and if we get to houston we're not going to be able to get a

flight. >> reporter: back live now here at san francisco international where the rain continues to fall. talked to the duty manager here about an hour ago. he said if you plan on flying out of the airport, make sure to call your airline because you could expect delays throughout the weekend. showers. then behind this on sunday, another punch, so i'll have your complete forecast. i have the computer model loaded up and ready to go. we'll also go to the mountains. see you back in just a minute. skiers and snowboarders who arrived before the storm hit had the slopes to themselves today. there was plenty of fresh snow and no waiting for lines. this family told us they planned to drive up today but decided to take the kids out of school a day early to beat the rush. they arrived last night with no problem. live at interstate 80 from the traffic camera. slow going, but traffic has been moving. as you might expect, chains are required. at 10:30 we'll go live to the sierra for an up-to-the-minute look at the conditions, a winter storm warning is now posted and where california's water supply stands after three dry winters. in other news, a toy drive is coming up short this year.

their annual holiday party is this weekend and they are short 5,000 toys. lloyd is live in san jose with the story, lloyd? >> reporter: as you know, christmas is one week away, but the south bay labor council is having their holiday party sunday. they are giving toys like this, a soccer ball to some 8,000 boys and girls. this truck holds some of the toys, but as you can see with one day before the party, the truck is far from full. >> we appreciate it. >> reporter: this evening, people were bringing in bags of newly-purchased toys. >> it makes me feel good to help kids that can't afford toys. >> reporter: the word is out about the need for toys. there was a steady stream of donors. >> we're going to make it. >> yeah. >> reporter: south bay labor council director put out an

urgent e-mail when he realized there were not nearly enough toys. his e-mail is even posted on facebook. he said this is the first time in 23 years there is a toy shortage. >> people always do donate. i think this year people are just really stretched and it's a lot harder. more people who used to give are now in need of receiving and therefore can't step up. >> reporter: one woman came to pick up her ticket to the party. she said her god daughter is looking forward to receiving 5 gift. >> it means a lot to them. anything they open, they are happy. they are grateful. >> reporter: donations today have the toy count at 3,000. they need 5,000 more. a 5 year old girl brought toys and money from her piggy bank. >> last year she got tiery eyed because i told her some kids don't have toys and a place to live. >> this is the one he chose. he wanted to give it to someone

who didn't have one. >> reporter: now if you want to help fill up this truck, the south bay labor council will be open all day long. go to www.ktvu.com for information. live in san jose, "ktvu channel 2 news." a man accused of kidnapping a 12 year old girl on the east coast and bringing her to san francisco was arraigned. 32 year old was arrested last week after a woman recognized him from news reports. today he was granted a question for a court appointed attorney. the girl disappeared after her mother was found dead on november 29. the girl is with her father and other family members. two sisters pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from an april apartment fire that killed their four young children. the two are charged with child

endangerment. shatara is also charged with four counts of second-degree murder while latisha is charged with voluntary manslaughter. the sister left the children inside the apartment with candles burning. the children ranged in age from 1-4 years old. the two sisters are being held on $250,000 bail. at the white house today, president obama signed the bill extending tax cuts for another two years. he acknowledged that no one likes all of the bill, but said it's god for the economy. >> not only will middle class americans avoid a tax increase, but tens of millions will start the new year off right by opening their first pay check to see it's larger than the one they get now. >> several republican leaders were on hand con lousily absent were nancy pelosi and terry reid. the house just passed the bill

late last night. the senate could make history tomorrow and vote to end the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy. their appears to be enough votes to pass a bill that would allow gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military. the vote was blocked by republicans who wanted tax cuts passed first. they plan to lobby senators to the last minute. a new batch ofless numbers today -- jobless numbers today. the rate held steady in november, exactly where it's been for four months. 1600 jobs were created last month. there may be hope in the numbers. >> reporter: at jcm, the equipment is running 24 hours a day as workers turn out machine components for the medical sector military computer industry. >> we have picked up in the

last 12 months and hired approximately 20 employees over the last 12 months. >> kristy, a single mother of four was hired six weeks ago through a temp agency after a long job search: >> applied for over 1,000 jobs, finally he came up with something. >> reporter: after years of sluggish growth, today's data indicates some improvements. silicone valley added about 200 jobs this year. >> one of the leaders in the state in terms of year-over job growth as of november. >> reporter: the nine-county bay area is fairing better than other parts of california. solano county was highest, san francisco at 9.6% and marin at 8.2%. right now, 2.2 million california workers are without jobs, but temp agencies such as

workers.com say more companies are starting to higher, which is a good sign. >> last four or five months we've seen an increase in jobs. now we're seeing uptakes in food production, plastics. >> historicically nationwide and statewide as a temp agency has increased hiring, it does tend to be a leading indicator towards growth overall in the economy. >> reporter: analysts say manufacturing, business services, and computer system design are big areas of job growth in the bay area. it's no secret this is a busy time of year for fed ex and the postal service, but people are being warned about thieves that steal the package if left unattended. amber lee is live at oakland

with this story, amber? >> reporter: julie, this is the u.s. postal services processing and distribution center here in oakland. it's the busiest time of day as workers sort through the high volume of holiday mail. those in the package delivery business told us this is also the season to watch out for thefts. postal workers say december is their busiest month, and this year the number of packages being mailed is up 18%. they say theft is a problem year round, but during the holiday season, thieves take advantage of those gifts in the mail. ask james of oakland an avid online shopper and e-bay seller. during the past month three items he bought online have been stolen. >> when i buy things online, i expect one out of ten to go disappearing. it's one of those things. >> reporter: a u.s. postal inspector advises those to

report the missing package to the delivery service and local police. >> police will be alert if somebody is doing some type of threat and postal inspectors can see trends in the thefts taking place. >> this time of year delivery drivers are in a rush and will often leave packages on porches if no one is home. >> we have a ton of stuff. there's presents and trying to get rid of the stuff and get rid of it safely. >> reporter: customers can ask for delivery confirmation or buy insurance if the item is expensive. with the economy the way it is, i would think we have our guard up more during this time of year. >> reporter: back here live at oakland processing center, postal officials tell us monday will be the busiest day of the year and workers are expecting to process more than 70,000 packages at this location alone. reporting live in oakland, amber lee, "ktvu channel 2

news." san jose police today released photos taken during an armed robbery at a chase bank. police say the man in this picture entered the bank shortly before 6:00 p.m. on tuesday and showed a handgun to a teller and demanded money. the man was given an undisclosed amount of cash and fled. the man is described between 45 and 50 years ode, 5 feet 5 inches and 150 pounds. ballplayers from testifying. the home run king is expected to go to trial in march. prosecutors say he lied when he said he never knowingly took performance enhancing drugs. his lawyers want to bar several former san francisco giants. some of them have been linked to steroid use. one of the bart police officers fired will soon be back on the force. bart accused the officer much lying in her -- of lying in her

testimony. she was on the platform at the fruit vail station on new year's day 2009. a labor arbitrator today concluded there was no evidence she lied. >> the arbitrator had questions to our case. we presented a vigorous case, we thought we took the right action, but we must live with the decision the arbitrator made. >> she graduated this morning from a fire academy, but her attorney says she plans to return to work as a bart officer. when you serve your country, the call to duty can come at any time and holidays are no exception. today was the sendoff for members of an east bay unit of the california national guard. while they realized they have a job to do. shipping off this time of year can be difficult. rob ross has the story. >> reporter: many women of this

pittsburgh based guard unit stood stoically here. their family and friends appeared equally stoic. the 870th police battalion is ordered to afghanistan. when the army says go, it must go. >> it sucks to put it bluntly, it sucks. the kids don't understand why you're not there, and you know, they are all excited because it's christmas, but they just don't quite understand. >> reporter: sergeant gary cooper is a father of four and decorated soldier. he and the 178 other members of leaving tomorrow for texas, then off to war. >> i take what i learned there and take it here. >> the battalion will be training and mentoring afghan security forces near the pakistan border. >> our mission is to legitimize the afghanistan government by supporting their police.

in order for us to leave, we need to make sure their security forces can support their country. >> these soldiers don't speak of fears they have. they signed up to do a job and are prepared to do that. >> my concern is making sure the needs of my soldiers come before mine and make sure they have everything they need, everything they could possibly want to help them accomplish their mission. >> reporter: the sergeant grew up in nevada in marin county. his mother says she'll try to be a good soldier while her son is away. >> i'm not delightful about the idea of my son deploying, but it's his chosen career. my position as his mom and our family is to support him. >> reporter: the deployment is expected to last until december. those in the unit say they have their fingers crossed they'll be home by next christmas. in pleasant hill, "ktvu channel 2 news"." this is live storm tracker

2. noticed this, around the headlands, heavy rain falling. that's where it's going to be in the coastal hills as this moisture pressures up against the coastline and sierra nevada. that was today. we have a flow of moisture coming off the pacific. not much has changed. look at this thing. that's impressive. this is a polar low. you have a jet stream across the pacific. over 2,000 miles. that's a big deal. doesn't mean the end of the world, we are going to be wet for awhile. the way it works out this weekend, showers and heavier showers at times. rainfall accumulations 1-2 inches. mountains and snow. when i come back, we'll visit the mountains and look at the new computer model. see you back here. google did not comply to hand over information it collected to connecticut

the criminal investigation into a man accused of molesting two young girls at a day care center is expanding: tonight police say they are concerned there maybe more victimstisms in the case. ken richard reports. >> reporter: this is samuel calper. he was arrested yesterday at

his parents home where hi lived. that home has also operated as a day care for ten years, but not now. its license were suspended after girls complained he committed lewd acts. saying the suspect touched her inappropriately, starting when she was 3. >> the second girl is 8 years old. she last attended two years ago. she said during the time mr. samuel calper forced her to disrope and take pictures of her. >> reporter: officials say the license was suspended in part because the day care did not report calper was living in the home. no background check was conducted. calper's mother said her son has never been in trouble. given the allegations date back almost ten years, there maybe more victims. >> that's a tremendous concern of ours not knowing how many other victims are out there

that are unwilling to come forward. >> reporter: police took cameras, computers, and other evidence from the home. calper's mother spoke to us offcamera and says the allegations against her son are false. her son faces two counts of lewd conduct with a minor and he's being held on nearly $1 million bail. "ktvu channel 2 news." wikileaks founder julian assange says there's a dirty tricks campaign against him and the u.s. involved. >> there is something secretly against me in the united states. >> the u.s. attorney general has said several times there's a criminal investigation against wikileaks for its release of secret documents and anyone who has broken the law will be held accountable. assange is wanted in a sexual assault investigation. it's the biggest win yesterday for victims of bernie

madoff's ponzi scheme. today more than $7 billion from proceeds with informsments. $5 billion will go to a victims fund. authorities have collected about half of the $20 billion lost in the scheme. governor schwarzenegger says he'd consider a job with the obama administration. he said he'd like to use his celebrity power and his experience on energy issues. the governor says he has plans to go to washington to get democrats and republicans to work together on that. fresh snow in the sierra. weather it's one too many

of snow. look at all this slush. it has been raining, sleeting, snowing in the past hour, and that is just creating a mess on the interstate. but all of this is great news if you go just a little further up the hill. the snow making machines are sidelined. mother nature is doing so well here they've broken a 30-year record. >> today we broke our record for most november/december snowfall ever. we're looking at 300 inches by the end of the month. >> reporter: skiers and snowboarders came up early for the great snow. but even he admits getting back down the mountain could be a problem. >> we're going to try. depend on whether or not the storm hitting will make it up here before 9:00. >> reporter: do you have reservations if you don't? >> the bus. >> reporter: on the roads, traffic was slow going. out trying to stay ahead of the storm. tonight, the chp has extra officers on patrol and a

street. the dow industrial finished down 7 points, but for the week posted a gain. the nasdaq rose 5 points. major retailers going all out before christmas. many offering big discounts and special prices on promotional items. some are extending store hours. certain macies stores will be open 24 hours from tuesday to friday. so far many retailers say business has turned out better than expected. >> the national retail federation says it's picked up on a trend, smart shoppers shopping on their smart phones. union square was packed today despite the rain. some people said they are using their smart phones to compare prices and buy online. >> e-bay, apple, h and m, things like that. it's convenient. it's fast and usually there's free shipping. >> bay area based paypal said sales from mobile devices are

up $300% this holiday season. some phones have apps that compare prices. retail analysts say smart phone shopping to keep increasing from now on. the barnes and noble book store will be closing at the end of the year. the store's manager told the store lost its lease. earlier this year, store ins oakland and richmond went out of business. most employees will be transferred to other bay area locations. in addition to wet roads, drivers are encountering dui checkpoints tonight. it's primetime for holiday parties and law enforcement statewide is launching a campaign to keep the party off the road. ktvu's debra is live in oakland which is being blanketed with officers right now, debra? >> reporter: we're at a command post. you can see there are tow trucks here waiting to haul away the impounded cars of arrested drunk drivers. 80 officers are saturating

oakland. they brought in their first dui arrest. another 80 are fanned out over the rest of the county. it's a 13-year tradition called strike night. two dozen agencies from albany to union city, making noise and shining light on the dangers of drunk driving. the officers launched after a briefing in liermore, a hearty dinner too. the next two weeks are a marathon, not a sprint, with more people out socializing, a happy time of year turns deadly on the road. >> i don't think people plan ahead. i think people get to the point where they need to get home and want to get home and they leave without thinking about what it is with these guys out there looking for them in every city throughout the county. >> reporter: every county makes a similar push. last year dui crashes through the holidays killed 36 people in california and injured almost 1200. >> we lost our son, matt, who

was just a really dynamic young man. he was at the naval academy. >> reporter: this east bay mom believes ignition interlock devices will save lives. her 22 year old son in the car with his parents was killed by a drunk who slammed into them. >> i say this every day, it's preventible with technology. >> reporter: until, cars won't star for any drinker, cops will have to patrol for swerving, erratic speed, stopping short up or past limit lines. >> we find we get a lot of first-time offenders this time of year simply because these folks are going to parties. unfortunately alcohol has a tendency to give people more courage than they should have. >> reporter: from now until 2:00 a.m., strike night expects to net about 100 drinking drivers against the first one

the homes at 1127 and 960 glen view drive are still happening but the damage is too severe. officials say repairs would cost more than demolition and reconstruction. another 35 homes were destroyed in the september blast that killed 8 people. a study released ggest children born to mothers who live close to freeways have twice the risk of having autism. the statement due to children's hospital in los angeles conducted the study. researchers say it adds to suggest pollutants cause the disorder in children. two blocks of downtown san francisco set to get a pedestrian-friendly facelift. the city announced powell street between ellis and gary streets will become a pedestrian promenade. the sketch shows how the parking lanes will be removed to make room for planters. the city says audi will contribute about $800,000 to

the project. it's expected to be finished in april. a mystery that's endured for 73 years could be solved soon. what happened to amelia earhart? she was attempting to be the first woman to fly around the world. bone fragments have been found at a camp site in the south pacific. they are being tested to see if they are earhart. one of the men who found the bones said the bones could be from a turtle. in mexico, officials put a number on the war of drug cartels. 12,500 people have been killed between january and november. that's about 3,000 more than last year. since the crackdown began four years ago, some 30,000 people have died. the government is claiming progress against one notorious cartel. in afghanistan, the top american military afternoon talked about a major hurdle to ending the war.

if everything stays on track, bart should open the new west dublin station in february. bart announced today the station is expected to open on february 19. the station is located in between the castro valley and dublin pleasantton stations. the project is two years behind schedule. it sits in the median near the 680 interchange and includes

1200 parking spaces. call trans is moving ahead with construction on the bay bridge. this evening, crews expect to put massive steel columns in place by tomorrow afternoon. they started this phase on wednesday, a day early, trying 20 get most of the work done before the rainy weather. police told ktvu this evening, the 24 year old man seriously injured in a crash this morning faces a very long recovery. police say a car went off the road at 6 this morning, hit a tree and light pole. the driver underwent surgery and is expected to stay at the hospital for two months. the incident shut down the road for more than six hours. the rain had an impact in the south bay and santa cruz mountains. there were numerous reports of accidents and a tree came down blocking one lane of highway 17. it's cleared now, but that was part of the mess.

jeanine reports. >> reporter: california highway patrol officers camped out along highway 17 today. they've been running from call to call. >> a lot of vehicles sitting out here southbound and northbound. we had a rollover this morning. >> reporter: it's no fun being stranded in the rain. cast teal low tried for two hours to replace a broken belt. it left him soaked. no rain jacket. >> no rain jacket. >> reporter: on the streets in san jose, crews responded to this spin out. the driver lost control while driving near capitol avenue causing her to jump the curb near this resident issue neighborhood. the rainfall created huge puddles. people came to buy tarps, rain gear, flashlights and batteries. >> wood burner, tarp for the leaky roof, towels for excess water on the floors.

>> reporter: it's raining a bit. this is nothing. no big deal. >> reporter: in ere the rain didn't deter holiday shoppers from coming out. >> this is not that bad. when it starts coming down and you're soaking wet underneath, i won't be outside. people can get gift certificates then. >> reporter: the rain is supposed to continue throughout the weekend. if you plan on heading out, the chp says keep distractions at a minimum. instead, concentrate on the road. reporting, "ktvu channel 2 news." all this rain means more water for california cities and farmers. water officials doubled their estimate at the amount of water they'll be able to deliver this year. the director, department of water resources said the early storms are giving the state its best water supply outlook in

tomorrow morning at 7:00 a.m., here we stop tomorrow night at 5:00 p.m. still snow in the mountains, winter storm warning still in effect, sunday at 7:00 a.m., more rain showers. then as we go into sunday afternoon, more showers. mountains, it never lets up. now you're into sunday afternoon. wet flow continues. remember the satellite image i showed you. that moisture funneling up against the west coast of the united states against the central california, actually south of point conception. we go into monday night, 5:00, more showers there. you get the picture. a wet flow. lots of things are going to change. what won't change over the weekend is a winter storm warning, stays in effect around lake tahoe. snowfall, we got 3-6 feet over the next 2 or 3 days, but by the end of next week, we could be talking 10 feet of new snow. snow levels may be going 5800 feet. they are going to hover there. this is a warm storm.

space station out of touch. the american woman astronaut and a russian and italian man are being given time to get used to it before getting to work. tests on the shuttle's fuel tank today, cracks were discovered last month before discovery was scheduled to go to the space station. that has been delayed to february 3 at the earliest. nasa said repairs seem to be working. battle
