people who watched the ball drop pretty much left. although there is still some folks lingering. we'll have a live report from new york in about ten minutes. >> it is 2011 in most of the world where the party started earlier to usher in the new year. fireworks roared tonight at the harbor bridge. an estimated million and a half people lined the shore or were out in boats to watch the display and say goodbye to 2010. in dubai the end came with a pyrotechnic show on the world's tallest building. in addition to the fireworks, lighting fountains sent colors streamers into the night air.

check point with -- [ no audio ] >> my daughter is out tonight. and she's the designated driver. >> reporter: this officer served 700dui warrants this year and points out a car crash sober is bad enough. >> you have a couple of drinks and get in a car accident, somebody gets hurt, you're booked on a felony. now, that follows you. >> a cab costs maybe between $20-$50. it's a lot better than if i get a dui and it's $10,000, ten years on my record, effected my job. >> have you been drinking tonight? >> reporter: this is the city's third check point of the holiday. and san fransisco is down dramatically on dui arrests this season. declining 18% from the same period last year. a sign some people are getting the message this is the ultimate buzz kill.

matter what are picked, having the cup here in the bay area will be the thrill of the lifetime. we don't know when newsom will be sworn in but today we learned when the celebration will happen. the campaign put out a statement saying the inaugural celebration is scheduled for january 10 at the state capitol rotunda. he was set to be sworn in january 3 but that is being delayed. san fransisco is about to lose one of its cable car lines. the california street line will close monday for an estimated six months. the closer will allow them to replace all the electronic components under the tracks and for repaving. at least one lane in each direction will stay open during the construction and that a shuttle bus will run along that route from 6:00 in the morning until midnight. we have been tracking a few showers already this new year's eve.

the smoke heavily damaged a second unit. the red cross is providing housing for those effected. a fire severely damaged two buildings this evening. it started before 5:30 on alameda street near main street in a building that neighbors says was used for storage. firefighters told ktvu nearby power lines made it difficult to get a handle on the fire. the cause is under investigation. no one was injured. light showers have been increased over the past two to three hours. you can see the coverage up in the north bay especially up towards sonoma county. tighter towards the central portions of the bay. and some showers into san fransisco and oakland. this was the scene this evening in oakland. we're looking at the -- just a bit of light drizzle out there just a few sprinkles. nothing too major. but as i just showed you on the

oakland homicide detectives are investigating a drive by shooting that left a young man dead this evening. officers at the scene tell us that it happened about 6:30 this evening on the 7300 block of fresno street. paramedics took the victim to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. police don't have a description of the shooter or the getaway vehicle at this time. the number of people killed in

>> reporter: the dow average hit its low in march of 2009. it began this year at 10,428. it hit its high two days ago and ended today 11% higher than a year ago. but way under its alltime high of three years ago. head of a stock trading firm says it was a good year for investors. >> for the first time since 2005 that all of the different groups were up this year. commodities were up, stocks were up, bonds were up, and had been dollar was up. >> i got good stocks at depressed value. so they turned around and rebuilt my portfolio up pretty well. >> i'm getting older faster than i'd like to but i hope i still have 10-20 years to recover in the stock market. >> it was certainly not a very good decade for being when you normally except and have seen in the past 9% returns a year

ktvu newsroom. the woman was attending a party at the l a quinta inn. shoots were fired through the door hitting the woman in the head. no one else was injured. no word on any arrests. but several people are being questioned. police are investigating a shooting that left a man wounded in the back yard of a home in san jose. about 4:15 this morning the homeowner fired his shot gun through a glass door. police found a drunk 24-year- old man shot in the stomach. he is expected to survive. police say the homeowner told them he heard noises then saw two armed men in the back yard. police found a cell phone but no gun or second person. >> we're discouraging individuals from taking matters into their own hands. it could be a dangerous situation. >> the homeowner was not arrested. about an hour before the shooting, police received a call about a drunk man trying to put a key in the front door

of a home about a block away. the alameda county sheriff's office said yesterday's fatality from the crash yesterday was a deputy. his minivan went off the road and hit concrete. ortiz was a 10 year veteran of the department. his wife is expecting their first child. no word yet on what caused the crash. in news of the world tonight: in egypt at least seven people are dead after a car exploded outside a christian church in alexandria. it happened as people were leaving a mass. some angry christians stormed a nearby mosque prompting stone throwing. militant about what they see as discrimination. in russia today anna chapman made her first public appearance on a talk show where she was called the woman of the year. she was deported from the united states earlier this year

large rocks blocking the road. today crews cleared the rocks and reopened the road. the park service is asking anyone traveling to yosemite to bring chains. nasa engineers have new repairs to make before discovery can launch. four new cracks are on the external fuel tank. the repairs are expected to take up to three days. it has been on hold since november when cracks were found in that same fuel tank. the earliest now the shuttle could launch is february 3. a while seems to of taken a liking to the bay. the gray whale has been spotted in the bay several times over the past few weeks. a kayaker shot this video of the whale two weeks ago. now is the peak of the migration system. the whale may of come into the bay searching for food. happy new year to you. we're almost there.
