juliani cardena from the hands of his grandmother. that's where tonight's candlelight vigil was held. it's also where our lloyd lacuesta is with the report. >> reporter: this boy was abducted from his home. today the cul-de-sac is crowded with the news media as well as his grandmother inside that house praying that juliani will come home safely. 100 people gathered tonight to light candles and pray for the boy. his mother and grandmother stood side by side with tears streaming down their faces. praying and hoping. >> i just want to say that i hope juliani is safe and he's warm where ever he's at. and i hope he comes home soon. because i don't believe jose is going to hurt him. >> reporter: a statewide hunt

is on the way for jose rodriguez. the family says he showed up at the house yesterday and forcibly took julani. the boy is not his bilogical son. but rodriguez had helped raise him since he was eight months old. >> i think because he thought i was never going to let him see him. he figured he wanted to spend time with juliani but he went about it all wrong. he went to the extreme. >> reporter: people placed candles where the boy was ripped out of his grandmother's armless. this display of emotions goes beyond this farming community. governor jerry brown sent a message to the family tonight saying they are in his thoughts and prayers. >> it's as if it's happening to your own family. >> i wanted to get the word out for people to help me. so to help keep their eye out for juliani. >> reporter: we are learning tonight that fbi agents are

keeping wake with the family in the home. live in patterson, lloyd lacuesta, ktvu channel 2 news. earlier this evening, the search for the missing boy focused on a large canal near that home in patterson. a large team from the stanislaus sheriff department began to search the canal after a person said they saw a vehicle matching the description. >> we believe that the car is in the water. obviously we're all hopeful that that's not the way this story end. >> the sheriff says there are other objects under water and the search will resume tomorrow. he also said the dive is very dangerous and complex because the water is moving so quickly there and the visibility is near zero. tonight the roommate of kidnap suspect jose rodriguez

described rodriguez as a man who keeps to himself, drinks a great deal and became very upset when he thought tabitha cardenas was no longer going to let him see juliani. >> i know he wasn't all there. a man who was unstable. i don't know what was going through his head. i know she wouldn't let him see his son, i know he was having problems with that. he thought alcohol was an answer. >> reporter: as steven moore said the empty bottles and bags outside the house are from rodriguez. moore said 4-year-old juliani did visit the house in months past and the two spent times laughing together and he saw no signs that rodriguez would hurt the boy. in fact, he said he never heard the child cry. authorities today also released surveillance video that they say shows rodriguez buying alcohol yesterday afternoon. authorities say the man that you see here in the checkered shirt and shorts is the 27-year- old rodriguez. they say that he bought beer but no gas at a gas station in

patterson just off i5. this took place about half an hour before the kidnapping. now here is the license plate number of the suspects car. 6hbw445. he's been flashed on highway billboards all over the state along with a description of the car. a silver toyota carolla. a mount diablo school board is debating the fate of seven schools. the district says it must close six of those schools to save money. glen brook middle school along with silver wood and mone gardens elementary. there are two other schools. sequoia middle school and sequoia elementary. and pat to the ti lee was there. >> reporter: this meeting lasted seven hours. the debate of taking seven

and gauge in an arrest warrant. minter had a lengthy wrap sheet. the officer tried to tase miter but did not hit. police also say that a gun was recovered near minters body. >> now to san francisco where a man with a wheelchair who's accused of stabbing a police officer pled not guilty to a police officer today. this is cell phone video. there's the cell phone video right there of the january 4th incident. police ended up shooting the man, he is identified as randall duncan. duncan was sitting in his wheelchair when the officer shot him. police say that duncan rose from his wheelchair after being

hit. and there's more information on the recovery of representative giffords. giffords is now able to stand on her own feet with assistance from medical staff. giffords family says they plan to move her to a rehabilitation center in houston in less than two weeks. she was shot through the fore head while hosting a political debate. a grand jury indicted loughner. he is now charged with attempting to kill giffords and two of her aids. six people were killed in that january eight rampage. there will be more charges against loughner. for now the most serious charge is attempted assassination. at the white house tonight, president obama hosted a formal state dinner for the president of china. this was a rare meeting, in

supporters marched in front of campus to confront the university president over his decision to sell the station. they're outraged that the station was closed with no warning. >> we want to say that jesuit university, it's not really very christian or catholic or whatever you want to call it. >> reporter: more than 100 people filled presentation theater to hear why the station was suddenly shut down. the president said he couldn't talk about the impending sale because the negotiations included nondisclosure terms. >> we don't staff a hospital. we run a law school, we're not a law firm. we teach broadcasting, we are not fundamentally a radio station. >> reporter: the station will continue online with its format of indy rock, foreign language and arts programming. but critics say that will not help listeners who don't have internet access.

determined. a fresno county judge has released the -- superior court judge says that a print of a thumb is unconstitutional. the law was set to go into effect february 1st. camila harris is considering an appeal. a judge ruled same-sex couples employed by the state here in california can sue for discrimination because they were excluded from a federally approved long term health care program. the law was necessary to promote procreation, saying marriage has never been contingent on having children. as expected the republican led house today voted to repeal health care reform passed by the democratic led congress

an investigation is under way tonight into this explosion of a natural gas line in philadelphia. one person was killed, six other people were injuredded. the blast occurred about an hour after they arrived as they were trying to shut off the line. the fire ended up spreading to three homes and four cars. back in the bay area now, federal agents seized evidence from a little known university

and the home of the school's president. immigration agents held a raid at the university. but what they were looking for is unclear. rob roth has our report. >> reporter: immigration and customs enforcement agents carried computers and boxes from trivalley university, a small cool in up pleasantton business park. the search is part of an ongoing criminal investigation. that investigation also led more than a half dozen agents to this home a half mile away in ruby hill a gated community. the owner of the home is known as susan su who moved in earlier this year. she is also the founder of tristate university. >> what happens to their future and what happens to my future

former state assembly speaker nunez is planning to sue former governor arnold schwarzenegger. the victim's father fred santos told us the suit will be strictly for justice not money. the lawsuit will state that arnold schwarzenegger violated amber's law. santos says he wants the longer sentence restored. and police are looking for a suspect in a hit and run that killed a young girl. the girl was seriously hurt but is expected to recover. her name and age have not yet been released. the vehicle seen driving from the scene is described as a dark colored suv or mini van. last seen going south on ran avenue. the driver is described as a hispanic woman with died blond hair and medium build. a man after two los angeles

county student was shot at their school. another teenager was shot near his school. the teen is expected to survive. also in los angeles county, police say two more students were arrested today in connection with yesterday's accidental shooting at gardena high school. two students were seriously wounded when a gun in a backpack went off. the students arrested today helped the teenager who police say brought the gun to school. the law enforcement source told the l.a. times that teenager stole the gun from his stepfather. a 15-year-old girl that was shot in the head remains in critical condition. and today, schools will begin text a tip. the idea came from the national football league. ktvu's jana katsuyama has our

baby doc needs a new passport and that's been denied. the pentagon says the number of soldiers taking their own lives nearly doubled last year among national troops and reservists. 90 soldiers committed suicide compared to 68 in 2009. 69 more than the previous year. roughly half of the guards men who took their own lives last year were never deployed. and very few were unemployed leaving military officials searching for answers. >> we know we have a problem we didn't recognize we had before. >> the military con seeds there is a problem, on getting suicide prevention and other mental support to nonactive

the bay area has long runways. in san jose, robert handa. the federal aviation administration reported dozens of laser strikes. there were 80 at san jose airport tieing it for the third most in the country. oakland airport had 55 laser strikes. and san francisco airport reported 39. it's a violation of federal law to shine a laser at a plane. some cities and states have their own laws. employees at napa state hospital are demanding money secure working conditions. >> what do we need? >> reporter: about 300 workers master bedroomed workers marched in front of the psychiatric hospital tonight. workers say there have been more attacks and that the state hasn't tackled the most pressing security needs. >> there's only cosmetic

changes. nothing has happened that's drastically will affect the safety for this place. >> reporter: some of the workers we spoke to today want the most violent patients sent back to prison. the department of mental health which operates the hospital says it is working on the problem. a new kind of blood bank in san francisco received it's first donation today of cord blood. a couple of st. luke company donated their newborn's cord blood. the donation is painless and free and has the ability to save blood. cord blood has stem cell that can be turned into any type of cell in the body and can be used to treat sick children who only hope may be those stem cell. that's more than enough for one new father. >> if we chose to save the blood for our own kid. it may or may not be used. but if we choose to donate it someone can use it. >> they hope to have 200 units
