complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is ktvu, channel 2 news at 10:00. >> the mystery is over. police say they found the body of a marin county woman missing for almost two weeks. good evening i'm ken weight. heather holmes is off tonight. the search for a missing teacher came to a grim end today after authorities found her body. the body of 53-year-old deborah schmidt was discovered just before 10:00 this morning in a creek not far from her home in ross. the high school teacher was

last seen ten days ago. the discovery comes after two searches away from her home. one was around phoenix lake a popular recreation area in ross. the other was in san francisco's golden gate park after authorities thought she might go there to live as a homeless person. the investigation of the area where she was found did not show signs of foul play. the coroner will perform an autopsy before cause of death is determined. family members have said schmidt was going through a divorce but not known whether that played a role in her disappearance. we have new information tonight about a bizarre officer involved shooting in oakland during which officers killed a man who was brand dishing a -- brandishing a fake gun. he was dressed in camouflage and carrying what looked like an assault weapon and a knife. police now sea he wound up at his ex-girlfriend's house on taft avenue and threatened to kill her. he went inside the home but as police approached he came out and confronted him.

police say he aimed the fake gun at three officers. >> however, it looked very real. and the officers' lives were in danger at the time. and they fired in defense of their lives and the lives of the other people that were in the home. >> neighbors had mixed reactions to the shooting. one saying that there needs to be better ways for officers to deal with the mentally ill. but all say they are grateful they are safe. police have not released the man's name. no one else was hurt. the police are investigating the city's third homicide of the year. police say 20-year-old eric lynn stewart was fatally shot this morning in front of a bar called my office on sacramento street. officers found a large group leaving, numerous bullet casings and broken window outside the bar. moments later police responded to a group fighting at kaiser permanente. once the crowd was controlled officers discovered that stewart had -- stewart had been

shot and killed. no arrests have been made. >> dive teams have ended their search for the body of juliani this afternoon. the car used in his abduction was pulled from the canal last night. ktvu's ken prithet. it has the family's reaction since that car was found. >> reporter: the 4-year-old was abducted january 18th. his father jose snatched the boy from his grandmother's arms. despite a witness who says a man and child were in the car when it sank, the family still has a message for his abducttore. >> he had better bring him soon. i mean, have a heart. >> reporter: his grandmother says the family believes the car was empty all along and that's why no bodies why found. >> and they were looking for the car in the canal. but he had plans already believe me. >> reporter: but the sheriff's department says two windows on the car were down and that it believes the bodies of the boy

raw emotion filled the streets of downtown san francisco as local egyptians joined others in a show of solidarity with protestors in egypt cities. organizers are calling on the white house to condemn egyptian president mubarek who they say is a dictator and a terrorist. >> you have no position to understand what it means to be a dictator. you did not live in that land. joe biden, imagine that. richard nixon as your president. protestors say egyptians have spent 30 years suffering from poverty, unemployment and even torture. similar demonstrations were held across the country today including minneapolis, washington, d.c. and this one in la. some of those demonstrators called for the u.s. to end the economic and military aid to the egyptian government. the u.s. gives $1.5 billion in aid to the government in cairo each year. this year, about $1.3 billion of that requested aid is slated

for "peace and security." in cairo tonight the egyptian president remains in power. but there are signs his hold on the country is further weakening. again tonight protestors are defying a night-time curfew. there are reports of looting and the military is arresting at least some people. today mr. mubarek fired his cabinet and named his right- hand man as the first vice- president. some say the naming of a vice- president could be a sign that he may resign. ben weederman has our report. >> reporter: it's chaos in the streets of cairo. a battle between a population in revolt and the remnants of a crumbling regime. the army caught in the middle. trying to restore order on behalf of the mubarek re gem but emerging as a rallying point for a movement without leaders. a movement with a sing willing -- single insistent demand.

muslim brotherhood. the eyes of the world may be on egypt but the protests continue on the streets of tunisia as activists accuse the new government of failing to dismantle the secret police force. this week the interim government removed from its cabinet almost all of the ministers associated with ousted president ben ali's regime. but opposition leaders are still being harassed by members of the secret police. human rights watchers say it is imperative that the interim government fully investigate the killing of protestors during the protests last month. here at home the bay area's arts community is rallying today beyond sarah shord calling for the release of her fellow hikers. christian kafton is at a concert aimed at raising money and publicizing the hiker he is

. east palo alto police tonight are looking for witnesses to a fatal shooting that happened this morning. investigators say the shooting was reported just before 2 a.m. in the 1900 block of capital avenue. officers found a 37-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound. he died at the scene. investigators are hoping witnesses will come forward to help them as they search for the shooter. a judge ruled this week that law enforcement officers who shot and killed a 29-year- old antioch man in 2008 acted within the law and had "a reasonable fear of death." timothy wayne mitchell was killed when the central contra cost extra narcotics enforcement team went to his antioch apartment with a search warrant after receiving a tip he was selling marijuana and had a sawed off shotgun. officers forced their way into his home with guns drawn. one officer said mitchell grabbed his wrist beneath the gun he was holding and he

thought mitchell was trying to take his weapon. that's when the officer's weapon went off killing mitchell. mitchell's family filed a lawsuit over the incident. police in north dakota are still tracking leads tonight in the shooting deaths of four people. the victims were found dead in two separate homes yesterday. a 19-year-old woman was found dead in her apartment. less than an hour later her mother and 13-year-old brother and her mother's boyfriend were found dead in a trailer. no arrests have been made but authorities have questioned a person of interest. not saying what may have led to the atalk -- attack. north dakota averages 11 homicides a year. >> a what is chew -- massachusetts teenager is being awarred after saving the life of his neighbor. he saw flames shooting out of the house across the street. he got a fire television extinguisher. he carried open the back door

and carried 69-year-old nina to safety. the cause is of the fire is still under investigation. tonight in nevada combat crews have gathered for what is considered to be some of the most realistic war exercises in the world. as casey stegall reports pilot training can mean the difference between life and death. >> reporter: this isn't afghanistan and these are not real targets. but the bombs are very real, as is the combat training, more than 1,000 troops from all branches of the military have come here to experience. >> it started historically as a joint exercise. and it has kept that flavour the entire time. that really helps us because again we never fight as individual service. we all fight as a joint force. and we have that common language. >> reporter: you don't just find aircraft belonging to u.s. forces only here on the flight line at dulles. in fact, military with 25 different countries also bring

their personnel here for training. the red flag exercise is all encompassing. from giving newer pilots lessons in the cockpit to teaching mainer maintainers on the ground who service the aircraft. >> the more real it is the better it will be on the line. >> reporter: enemy planes painted with colors are also flying around keeping the pilots on their toes. >> we are there to provide a realistic representation to the blue forces. >> reporter: this red flag training exercise only happens three times a year and lasts for about three weeks. often times it is the final stop for troops before deployment. in nevada, casey stegall, fox news. >> a federal appeals court in san francisco has denied the government's request to suspend a lawsuit challenging the military's ban on openly gay service members. the 9th u.s. circuit court of

appeals issued the order yesterday. the department of justice is now required to file papers by february 25th arguing why the court should overturn a ruling called don't ask, don't tell unconstitutional. the government had asked that the case be set aside because the pentagon was moving quickly to repeal the ban. the 9th circuit court did not explain why it rejected the request. for the time being google has avoided a series of lawsuits over its mistaken collection of personal data. google's street view service part of its mapping function mistakenly collected personal data for years. about 40 states were poised to sue over the mishap. but yesterday connecticut's attorney general said he had reached a deal with google and will start settlement negotiations with the mountain view company. a spokeswoman said google is profoundly sorry for collecting the data. the nation's largest cable t.v. company has taken over a majority stake in nbc universal. comcast announced the takeover this morning, though the deal

>> street outrage counts a lot of success stories but still an uphill battle, saving young lives and stemming the violence. they are out here most thursday, friday and saturday nights until 2 a.m. reporting live in oakland, deborah villalon, ktvu, channel 2 news. work has been halted on efforts to deliver a 65-foot crab boat to its owner in princeton by the sea. the phyllis jay washed aboard earlier this month. the county officials determine the crane boom needed to lift the boat off of a trailer requires a permit from the federal aviation administration. that's because the boat is located near the half moon bay airport. crews are expected to return on monday to finish the job. >> the friend of cal train held a summit today to help find permit funding for the transit service. this morning the summit was packed with riders, activists and others hoping to get the rail service back on track. despite cutbacks cal train faces a $30 million deficit.

the peninsula needs the train. >> we are at a point where we are reducing the actual service by about 40%. and we can't do that because, first of all, we can't have another, you know, 20,000 vehicles on highway 101 and 280. and so many people rely on the service. >> this month cal train cut four trains and raised fares more than seven percent. the service doesn't rely on taxes but depends on fares and contributions from other transportation agencies such as muni which is also struggling. an ethics probe of california's high speed rail project has ended clearing the members involved. the fare -- fair political practices commission investigated whether the former board directors and others took overseas trips paid for by foreign governments without reporting the travel. the commission sent a letter tuesday saying it found no wrongdoing and lowed the case. -- closed the case. all about then today at fort mason as the largest

festival dedicated to the wine came to a close. the 20th annual zinfandel boasted wines from 200 wineries and 200,000 pounds of cheese. it helped raise money to support wine related programs at uc davis. organizers say about 9,000 people were at today's event. san francisco's first asian american mayor received an enthusiastic welcome today in chinatown as this year's chinese new year festivities got underway. motorcade carrying the deputy governor of the kandahar province. the explosion killed the official and injured three bodyguards. taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. relations between pakistan and the u.s. are suffering tonight after a u.s. diplomat was charged with killing two pakistani men. today protestors beat an effigies of raymond davis while calling for his death. the u.s. embassy is demanding that davis be released saying he qualifies for diplomat inning immunity. he shot two armed men on a motorcycle who were trying to rob him. in russia, investigators now say the suicide bomber who killed 35 people at moscow's airport this monday was deliberately targeting foreigners. investigators say the bombing was carried out by a 20-year- old from a region where islamics have been fighting for years from a breakaway state.

moderate cells heading out towards berkeley as well. some more enhancement here down towards san jose. this has been pretty much a stranger over the passed couple of weeks with that dry weather pattern. things are finally beginning to change. the rainfall will continue to pick up for the overnight hours. for earlier tonight we have clouds. just a few rain showers out there. the overall coverage has been on the increase. rain returns especially for tomorrow morning. the extended forecast it looks like another dry weather pattern. so just a one shot deal with the raindrops pushing into the region. here is a look at the storm system we have been watching. there is that center of circulation approaching the north coast of california. here is the eventual track as we do take this into sunday with that area of low pressure moving in. so the heaviest rain is scheduled for tomorrow morning between 3:00 and 7:00. forecasted totals about a quarter of an inch to three quarters of an inch. the possibility of some thunderstorms especially for tomorrow morning. the sierra will pick up some
