a tragic ending tonight and the search for two missing east bay teenagers who set off on a rafting adventure. good evening everyone i'm heather holmes. >> and i'm ken wayne. there is sadness tonight in walnut creek following the deaths of two teenage boys who tried to raft down a rain filled canal. their bodies and a small raft they were using was found after

a desperate search. patti lee spoke to some of the boy's friends. >> reporter: friends described them as adventurous but responsible, and this rafting trip had been planned for months. >> reporter: his friend, 16- year-old matthew miller had similar diverse interests. a track star who was also in the model un. >> matt was a great artist. totally amazing. cal was just one of the nicest people you would ever meet. doesn't seem fair. >> reporter: this community is struggling to deal with the death of these talented teenagers while lending support to their grieving families. >> i can hardly brief thinking

of what they were going to. >> reporter: the teenagers went rafting. by 1:00 a.m. sunday morning the byes were reported missing by their frantic families. by 1:30 this afternoon the rafts and bodies of the boys had been located in three different areas. >> that's where they would have cast off. >> reporter: aden harris, gavin's oldest friend tells us that the rafting trip had been planned for months, after they found an old raft in their garage. >> i helped them plan a route. they do all kinds of stuff like that. >> i heard the idea of going rafting a few times and it sounded like fun. but nobody had any idea. >> reporter: i talked with

contra costa county officials and they said the boys were wearing bicycle type helmets. from libya tonight, words of warning deadly clashes in the capital and street celebrations in the second largest city of bengazi. where protesters there say they have seized weapons and control of army barracks. tonight anti government protests spread to libya's capital where riot police fought with protesters. earlier in the day in bengazi at least 15 people were reported lid killed in clashes between military forces and mourners in a funeral procession for victims of yesterday's violence. human rights officials say over the last few days 350 people have been killed. protesters say, the ruling must

angry demonstrators say -- >> it won't change. we want to topple the corrupt regime who's taking away our rights. there's no dialogue. >> reporter: many bahrain hundreds of doctors and nurses joining the protest calling for the health minister to step down. opposition leaders are now examining officers from the government to begin talks after deadly confrontations of sharply divided the nation. and in morocco about 10,000 people marched through the streets calling for freedom. susan rice says washington is urging arab leaders to embrace the demands for democracy. julie band eras. officials say the spikes were illegal and that the utility should have inspected for damage afterwards. bg & e has admitted to spiking the san bruno pipeline twice in

2003 and 2008, but it told the paper that temporary pressure increases were safe and legal. federal investigators suspect a bad weld ruptured causing the september explosion. and pg & e is making new efforts to reach out to customers. they're conducting a listening tool to hear complaints and concerns from the public. the tour started in san francisco and will continue through april. it's clear the cpuc has work to do. the public utility's commission is leading the investigation of the san bruno disaster. for the second time in three days, the beach at fort funston had to be evacuated today after visitors discovered a box of flairs and the bomb

squad was called in to detonate them. those flairs were detonated inside a hole in the sand. today's incident closed down the beach from around 10:45 to 1:15. according to park police, flairs are found in the area a couple of times a year. heavy fog may have played a role in a single car crash that killed a man on northbound highway 101 in santa rosa. the 29-year-old man was driving a nissan exterra when he veered off the street. there was heavy fog at the time cutting visibility to an estimated 75 feet. police arrested a san bruno man accused of driving drunk and killing a pedestrian in pacifica. 57-year-old leopoldo padilla allegedly drove off after

hitting the pedestrian after 1:30 this morning. padilla later returned to the scene and admitted his involvement. the name of the man hit has not been released. these are pictures from news chopper 2, at an elevation of 3,800 feet the top of the mountain is well above yesterday's snow level. in some area it is snow is measured at more than a foot deep there's also snow in the santa cruz mountains. the sierra has a lot of snow, the alpine meadows ski resort is estimates 9 feet of snow since the recent winter storms began on monday. most mountain sierra reports are -- the highway patrol says road conditions also look good as you can see from these

pictures in the sierra. there are no traffic restrictions on the major highways. the body of alex guthrow was found at 11:30 this morning. the 23-year-old reddingman last called his family on thursday and told them he was going to take one last run down the mountain. a southern california hiker remains missing tonight. dr.ryan carrico vanished during a hike in the mount san jacinto wilderness. searchers found his car last night and looked for him again. conditions are rough with temperatures in the 20s. family members are optimistic saying he has proper food,

when gunfire erupted inside a church, the community there took a stand. john sasaki shows us that their renewed commitment to end the violence has paid off. >> reporter: the early sunday service was filled with hope and joy. a far cry from valentine's day last year when two gunmen opened fire injurying two teenage brothers. that event started an outcry from community leaders. >> the people have found out that god is real. >> reporter: last year there were 21 homicides in richmond, less than half the previous year. and while last january there were five killings, in the first month and a half of this year there's been only one. >> brought a lot of people together and it encouraged the

relationships here with the police department and the community. we're all working together to get this crime problem solved. >> reporter: this young man says the streets feel safer. >> it does feel better on the streets, you approach the streets differently. it's kind of like more respect going around. >> reporter: at independ community church, pastor landry has been leading the struggle here to end violence. >> we don't see as many drug dealers on the corner anymore. we don't hear as many shots fired. much safer area to come to. >> reporter: in richmond i'm john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 news. two armed gunmen are accused of robbing several partygoers this morning outside a fraternity house at uc davis.

started at 8:00 p.m. when two uninvited guests showed up at the new alpha kappa fraternity house. when the men were asked to leave, the two went outside and robbed four people at gunpoint. the two then took off in a car only to crash into a fence at a day care center. police caught one suspect while the other ran away. police found a loaded handgun at the center's handgun. >> needles to say had that gun been spotted by the children when the day care opened who knows what could have happened. >> reporter: the suspect has been identified as 19-year-old daniel chavez of soledad. they believe chavez and the other suspect are gang members. if you drive you've probably noticed prices are going up at the pump. according to a new survey released today, it's due to events in the middle east and africa. the average price of gas is up

3-cents to $3.18. the highest average gas price in san francisco is $3.62. and $3.57 in both oakland and san jose. nathaniel ford, spokesman confirmed that ford is being considered to head washington's airport authority. ford is the city's highest paid authority. his departure comes as a very difficult time for nummi. preaching education, cal state official took to the pulpit on this super sunday to talk about preparing for college. as ktvu's jim vargas explains it's all in an effort to reach out to african american students. >> reporter: csu officials were at a dozen african american churches on what they call super sunday. reaching out to students and

getting used to the forest gump comparison. unlike forest, he has a reason for his cross country marathon. >> we have an epidemic of childhood obesity in this country and i think we have to change it because that's our future. >> reporter: cannasi plans to run the equivalent of two marathons a day every day for 75 days straight. when it's over, he'll have run from disneyland to new york city. along the way, he hopes to get kids interested in more than video games and junk food. >> there's about 25 schools along the way and i'm going to give a talk about the importance of physical activity and a good diet. they're going to run with me a mile down the road and i'll keep going. i'm really trying to inspire this nation to get healthy. >> reporter: he's run across the south pole, the gobi desert and the sahara. he says he'll burn about 7,000-

tonight for venture capitalism. the venture group saw growth last year after three years of declining investment. venture funds collectively increased their investment by 19% from 2009, the number of deals also grew by 12% from the year before. this is the industry's first year to year growth since 2007. industry insiders said they are in recovery mode but hope the trends continues through this year. jail officials say norman welsh made bond on friday after a judge reduced his bail. welsh's codefendant and friend christopher butler remains behind bars. welsh is accused of stealing and selling drugs. he was the head of the state's central contra costa's narcotics team. two girls were injured yesterday when strong winds carried them away in a bounce

well the money is there, an agreement is in place, but a plan to increase communications between bay area law enforcement agencies has hit a wall. as lloyd lacuesta explains, it's how that deal was made that's coming under fire. it happened during the 9/11 terrorists attacks almost ten years ago. and as recently as the mehserle verdict riots last year. there are communication break downs, lack of a unified system allowing agencies to talk to each other. the alameda county sheriff is trying to change that. >> we're trying to create a broad band 4g lt system. >> reporter: motorala received an opportunities program grant detop to construct the network for the bay area. >> unfortunately that money has been diverted to a different

approach. doesn't involve the city of san jose, doesn't include the city of oakland, doesn't even involve the city of san francisco. we're kind of upset about that. >> reporter: san francisco mayor chuck reed and the san jose city council have so far voted against joining the system called bay web. it would connect the nine bay area counties and santa cruz. >> miss representations were made to the u.s. government in order to get funding from the federal government, so a grant was given directly to motorola and it's going in a direction that we think is not a good use of the public funds and will interfere with our inability to public safety and violates the rights of the residents of san jose. >> i've never misrepresented anything we're trying to do here. >> reporter: some staff members including the executive director are former motorola employees.

>> the fact that they had worked for motorola who was given the grant does not seem that much of a problem to me. >> reporter: the sheriff's role has come to a question. >> the sheriff is leading us in a path to commitment with motorola. technology that hasn't been proven. >> all i'm trying to do is build the program for the future. >> reporter: how complete is a bay area communications system without involving the largest city, san jose with its 1 million residents. both san jose and santa clara county are calling for a federal investigation. >> the people that have reviewed our process at both the state and federal agencies have indicated that we've done everything above and beyond what needs to be done. >> i don't think i'm going to get angry but i am going to get it fixed. >> reporter: one thing both men agree on is that the current communication system needs to be upgraded. mayor reed says he will be in washington next month and is

prepared to speak to president obama directly. lloyd lacuesta, ktvu channel 2 news. you'll find lloyd's story along with other recent ktvu reports by going to our website ktvu.com and clicking on the tab near the top of the home page. santa clara city leaders are working behind the scenes to try to make sure that redevelopment funds don't disappear under governor jerry brown's watch. on tuesday the santa clara city council plans to meet to look at ways to ensure that $40 million promised for the project is not cut from the state's budget. brown says he wants to do away with redevelopment agencies and funnel that money to education and local governments. tomorrow could be a pivotal day in wisconsin with thousands of state workers expected to stage a huge protest the seventh one in a row.

one doctor says the stress on protesters is very real, teacher absences were so widespread last week that some schools actually had to shut down. in news of the world tonight, off the coast of somalia. a u.s. navy worship has confirmed a yacht. a couple from southern california and two people from seattle were on board. the yacht is heading closer to northern somalia. in mexico, the last three days mark one of the deadliest time spans in the country with more than 50 people killed. president felipe calderon declared war on the drug cartel. violence has been increased in

the resort city of acapulco. in response, president calderon announced armed forces will strengthen their presence. and in brazil, dancers are prepping for carnaval season. a wearhouse fire destroyed costumes. even so one of the schools says it will still perform in the annual parade. thousands came out the students finish their technical performance. rio's parade season culminates with parades. carnivals are viewed by millions on brazilian television.

clouds. we'll come in and look at some of the numbers. san jose currently 39 degrees. napa at last check reporting 40. here's a look at the overall weather story for tonight. we do have this partly cloudy skies, chilly numbers out there. tomorrow, a lot more clouds, we reintroduce a good bet of showers. temperatures the coolest locations right around freezing for santa rosa 32. san jose a forecast of 36 degrees. pretty chilly for tomorrow morning. today a batch of high clouds moving across the bay area. even a few sprinkles but nothing too significant. here's the activity i'm watching for tomorrow. an area of low pressure, in fact, here's the forecast track and you'll note the bulk of the rainfall continues offshore. with that we're going to bring in more clouds and the

possibility of a few scattered low showers. it may only be a chance, but there's not a lot to show you in the bay area. mainly just clouds out there tomorrow morning. as we continue to put this into motion, i'll have to step out of the way. there you can pick out some activity offshore. close enough to the bay area, it warrants that chance into tomorrow afternoon. by the evening hours, this time tomorrow night we could already have clearing skies. 7:00 tomorrow morning, mid-30s to mid-40s with your bay area forecast. scattered cloud, by tuesday night mostly cloudy. temperatures 50 to 55 degrees. san francisco 53, fremont in the mid-50s as well. here is a look ahead. your five day forecast you will notice this into tuesday. another very cold morning out there. we could be talking about freezing temperatures. partly cloudy skies on wednesday. there's a slight chance of a shower on thursday.

good evening everyone, welcome to this late sunday night edition of sports wrap. it has to be right up there with the new york jets winning super bowl iii or buster douglas beating mike douglas in the second sprint cup race of his life. dayne won the daytona 500. jimmy johnson among the big names favored. they called it a silent lap, recognizing the 10 year anniversary of the death of dale earnhart. fans saluted with their own version of number three. when you race on the speedway, you drive with the thought of the big one.

all said 14 cars were either damaged or forced out of the race. three were from hendricks motor sports. marcus ambrose heads for the pits. new surface at daytona, the drivers tried to pair up on the fly and then draft. with four laps to go, kurt boyer and reagan smith get tangled up. they set up a green checker situation on the first lap of the green start. newman involved in another accident, this one taking out dale earnhart jr. any thoughts of earnhart winning in the anniversary of his dad's death were gown. they go green checker one last time. and carl edwards pushing from behind. but, bayne got to the finish line first. he was heard on the radio
