apartment complexes. >> reporter: we're on monroe street which is in between scott and los padres boulevard. this man was found dead by that grass area by someone who was walking by. >> just shocking. >> reporter: the street was blocked off for more than nine hours today as investigators gathered evidence all morning. >> i saw ten car, i thought this must be horrible or something. then on the other side i met one police officer and he told me that stabbing has happened. >> reporter: firefighters used bleach to clean up blood that stretched from one side of the street to the other. >> there's a will the of trace evidence that the investigators are working on. >> reporter: the victim had traumatic wounds including stab wounds but that's not how

investigators are saying he tkaoeuld. this resident who lives upstairs does not want to appear on camera but claims he heard screams at three o which 3:00 in the morning. >> i heard someone screaming saying, help me, help me. >> reporter: security cameras are posted inside and outside the building. >> it's not typically the area at all. this isn't the wild west, this is the bay area. tech center, calm mostly. >> we're certainly not immune to crime but santa clara is a safe city over all. >> reporter: there were only two homicides in santa clara last year. police have not made any arrests and are asking anyone with information to call them. concern is glowing tonight

about an elderly san francisco man who has been missing now for four days. kenneth chung is a senior. 30 volunteers searched but there is no sign of ching. and paul chambers with a somber memorial today in the south bay. >> reporter: it was an emotional fund raising for murray. >> it's amazing. >> everybody is touched by this story because it could have happened to anyone. >> reporter: it was december 1st of last year when murray and her 2-year-old daughter were crossing the street. that 18-year-old driver who was using her cell phone struck

them. killing kaley and leaving murray with injuries. everything in the room including the venue was donated. the local elementary school made these pictures for the event. >> 30 car washes, bake sales, they wanted to create art so we could sell it at this event. >> i just wanted to do something for the people but i don't know what do i do. >> reporter: the murray family say they are not used to being on the receiving end. instead they would rather do for others. but today is about them and getting the word out of not texting and driving. >> don't take someone's life for a phone call. >> reporter: paul chambers, kt

on interstate 80 just west of cherry glen road. the female driver of a toyota sedan was driving eastbound when for unknown reasons she drove off the road. the car slammed into a tree and burst into flames. the driver and her passenger were killed. their identities have not yet been released. just about 30 minutes before that crash, that man was killed and another seriously injured after their chevy malibu slammed into a sound wall. the highway patrol is asking anyone with information to give them a call. a three day hearing into last month's san bruno explosion. the national transportation board hearing is the first time pg & e has talked publicly

about the explosion. the utility will likely be forced to answer questions about the safety of it system. in cleveland, ohio, a natural gas line exploded igniting a fire sending smoke and flames 30 feet into the air. there are reports the line was repaired yesterday, but that a new break occurred today. crews had the fire controlled by 6:00 tonight. the cause of that leak is under investigation. no injuries were recorded. about 200 union workers are still occupying wisconsin's state capital tonight and police are letting them stay. although some protesters left this afternoon, many ignored a request to leave so the rotunda could be cleaned after two weeks of sit ins. instead the clean up happened with the protesters in place.

the senate still lacks a quorum with 15 state senators still hiding in illinois. >> they don't have to vote for it, they don't have to support it but they need to come back and do their job. >> reporter: the governor says the bill is vital to close the budget gap for the fiscal year. tomorrow morning, crews are supposed to start installing the newest section of the bay bridge. they will list the four sets of towers storm. crews are expected to work around the clock until the towers are set. expect for a possible visual distraction this phase of construction will not affect traffic. the entire project is expected to be completed by 2013. old head stones in gold country have been discovered to contain the n world. three dozen african american miners are buried at the relocation cemetery near fulsome lake. the graves were moved there back in 1954 to avoid being

flooded when the lake was created. but instead of carving the original head stone with negro hill, a racial slur was carved. it may be sunday night but that didn't stop san francisco from having a big party in the name of a good cause. the unusually cool weather is not good news for farmers in northern california. the items you might have a tough time finding next time you go to the farmer's market. >> the bay area was not the only place

jose. voters overwelmingly approved the tax in november. rescuers at an animal shelter say they are concerned about the number of sick puppies coming in. the east bay spca says the number of puppies suffering from malnutrition has increased over the last few yearsful and they are also seeing more pups carrying the parvo virus. that may be because people have finding more cats and dogs abandoned. and it's not as cold out there tonight as it has been the last few nights but the frigid temperatures have left their mark on bay area produce. allie rasmus went to check out fruits and vegetables at a local farmer's market. >> reporter: this is what frost does to lettuce. >> there's little brown parts that are burned. >> uh-huh. >> reporter: cold weather destroyed a large portion of the lettuce crop this week

take a look at this, some impressive pictures this is a solar flair on the sun. this eruption occurred last thursday and lasted about 90 minutes. the eruption is the latest in a series of strong sun storms this month. the blast was directed away from earth and was not expected to disrupt satellite systems. in chile today there were memorials and protests to mark one year since an 8.8 magnitude earthquake killed more than 500 people. in one central chilean town. protesters set fires demanding that the government do more to rebuild the country. the president acknowledged the discontent but said the government is doing everything humanly possible to help people rebuild their communities. it's estimated 220,000 homes were destroyed in the quake and

under staffed and dangerous, that's how a state hospital is being described. ktvu's jim vargas talks to employees who say conditions are putting both staff and patients at risk in tonight's special report. >> reporter: employees at napa state hospital say they have some of the most dangerous jobs in california. there were more than 1,200 ray tacks on patients and staff in 2009 which was the last year that full statistics are available -- 1,200 attacks. >> this hospital is out of control. >> reporter: people who work here say the problem starts with an old facility built as a hospital which since the mid- 1990 has been housing violent criminals who come from jails. and the lack of police inside the fence where both violent and nonviolent patients are

housed. >> he came across the table with both fists flying. >> reporter: dr. rich buzz knocked in the face. >> what would have prevented him attacking me? more police presence. >> reporter: police presence could have helped a nurse killed last month. former president wayne warren jr. says he spent much of his life here. he is one of the people that complain of long hospital response time. >> police are to my right and the sally port is to the left. police take about two to three pháeups to -- minutes to get into this sally port.
