angels are on patrol. ktvu's deborah villalon talked with the unarmed volunteers who believe they can make a difference. >> reporter: heather, we are on mission street where that man was gunned down followed a few case later by a shoot-out nearby. now the folks and red w -- berets want to calm the tension. >> we get a lot of drugs in this area. >> reporter: four shootings and two stabbings in two weeks. rival latin gangs at war police say. and now the guardian angels are coming in with confidence and precision. >> thereto a love of people getting shot. >> reporter: the gang target wounded but alive. bullets that might have hit anyone. >> if my mom is walking down the street, i don't want her to be worried is she going to get shot in the head? >> jackie in her bullet proof vest gets gang life better than

most. she grew up and got out. >> they weren't there. they said oh, we have got your back, we will be there for you. no matter there we were down. i got locked up and where were they? i was in juvenile and they were running the streets. >> reporter: are you concerned the gangs will push back on your presence? >> we are hoping so. >> reporter: and then what? >> we can have somebody incident meet raid. >> but any truth comes too late for this family. 24-year-old man died. they are here in la for his funeral they said they thought he had left the gang. >> you are young and you join a gang. then you want to get out and then this happens. it is not fair. i hope the young kids his age will learn. >> whoa, no drinking here, okay? >> tonight we saw the guardian angels dealing mostly with drinking in public. the angels may not be able to dent the gang war any more than police and community groups. but it's not going to stop them from trying. now a few minutes ago i checked

in with the mission station. they say so far tonight, this neighborhood is quiet. reporting live in san francisco's mission district deborah villalon, ktvu, channel 2 news. well, there was more violence in the i mission early this morning but it was apparently unrelated to the recent gang incidents. police say two women were stabbed during a fight in front of the club at the corner of 16th and treat streets that happened just before 2:00 this morning. both suffered minor injuries. one person was arrested. it was a robbery that police say pitted one victim against as many as 15 attackers. it happened at a cal train station in redwood city. news of the attack caught many riders by surprise. >> reporter: there was a steady stream of people waiting to ride cal train tonight in redwood city. many had no idea that last night at 7:30 a 47-year-old man waiting underneath this clock tower at the cal train station was jumped and badly beaten by a group of 9-15 people.

>> i wish i had within -- been there to help them out. that's my reaction. and it is shocking to me that that kind of cowardly behavior would be able to occur. >> the assailants robbed him before the police arrived. the victim is from san jose. now at the hospital critically injured. >> it is kind of unusual to have this kind of an incident at cal train station and we are treating it very seriously. >> reporter: the redwood city transit hub is near shopping. and there were people who witnessed the attack. some told the police they saw white compact car leaving the scene. >> there was always a cop right around this area. so, yeah, i'm surprised that actually that did happen. that is pretty bad. i hope, you know, he gets better. >> reporter: tonight there was a heavy presence of police patrolling the area near the station. while the authorities are staying tight lipped about their investigation, they say they are optimistic they will be able to identify those responsible in the days ahead.

investigators are following up on potential leads from witnesses. but they would still like your help on this case. if you have any information, you are asked to call the san mateo county transit police. reporting from redwood city, ktvu, channel 2 news. state park rangers are investigating the death of a man whose car was found at the bottom of a 200-foot cliff in sonoma county this afternoon. park police say they got a call from people in the area who spotted the car on the beach about six and a half hours ago. the chp says the man had been missing for over a day and his family had contacted the police earlier in the day to file a missing person's report. the contra costa county sheriff's department arrested one of its own in the ongoing investigation into a state narcotics team. a 47-year-old stephen was arrested last night on drug, weapons and conspiracy charges. officials also suspect that private investigator christopher butler hired him to make drunk driving arrests of men involved in divorce and

child custody cases that butler was working on. butler and former drug task force commander norman welsh are facing charges for allegedly stealing and then selling confiscated drugs. late today contra costa county sheriff called the arrest. two new members of the san jose police force are getting some help buying equipment they need on the job. today's grand opening of a pet food express on blossom hill road was used to kick off a fundraiser to help canine officers bo and ej get body armor to protect them while on duty. the dog's human partners say it is standard practice for the officers to raise funds for some of their canine companion's equipment. >> the dogs are each individually purchased by the canine handlers themselves. we actually own the dogs. so they provide the majority of

the equipment and the training. but not 100%. >> pet food express tells us they raised $3600 today of the $4800 it will cost to get armor for both ej and bo. donations can be made at any of three pet food express stores in san jose through april 30th. >> this week crews in south san jose are scheduled to begin work on a railroad overpass at the site of a tragic accident that claimed the life of a 2- year-old boy six years ago. in november, 2005, alexander was hit by a train near the intersection of blossom hill and monte ray roads. little alexander was walking behind his baby-sitter when he was killed. the $10 million overpass project was scheduled to begin last september but postponed because of funding issues. rebels in libya shot down a government fighter jet, one of the most potent weapons used by

the gadhafi regime. wednesday -- ben weederman has the latest on this rebellion. >> the rebels say they took down, shot down a libyan plane. we went to the site and found that over about a kilometre there was debris from a 24 fighter bomber that was strewn for about a kilometre over the desert. we also found the two bodies of the pilots there headless. now, the forces in the area claimed they shot it down with an anti-aircraft gun. but there is no evidence on the scene to explain how the plane came down, whether it was shot down or simply crashed. but it could be a significant development because the achilles heel of the anti- gadhafi forces that are trying to advance westward has been libyan air force jets and helicopters flying over the area. in fact, we did see one of those helicopters firing on opposition positions.

we saw that the opposition forces are re grouping. they are bringing in more heavy equipment, including tanks and anti-personnel carriers. (gun shots). >> they say they are preparing to move in the direction of shiirt a city local to go. adhafi and his birthplace and military encampments around that city. i am ben wederman reporting from eastern libya. (chanting). >> in yemin as thousands of anti-government protestors took to the streets there again today, the president dug in his heels. he rejected a proposal by the political opposition calling on him to step down by the end of the year. president ali sala insists he will take put until the elections scheduled for late 2013. several members of his ruling part resigned in protest of his handling of the demonstrations.

california has the highest gas prices in the county tonight as unrest in the arab world continues to drive up the price of oil. while it is easy to run into $4 a gallon gas in the bay area, the state wide average price for regular is $3.87 a gallon, up 49 cents from a month ago. aaa says diesel has already broken the $4 barrier running an average of $4.19 a gallon, up 50 cents from a month ago. gas in california hit a record high of $4.61 in june of 2008. to find the least expensive gas where you live, go to ktvu, channel 2 news.com and click on the business tab and choose consumer from the drop-down menu. a young louisiana mother was killed today as she tried to protect her daughter from a falling tree which was torn from the ground when the tornado touched down. the mayor of the town of rain says the girl was not hurt. the weather service says the tornado was 300 yards wide and

change. >> when bart started in 1972, it was we were competing directly against the automobile. we wanted to provide a comfortable seat. now with 350,000 riders daily on our train, is our current seats the most appropriate fabric? >> one suggest is use easier to clean hard surface seats. bart management says they will be surveying riders about their preferences later this year. federal investigators looking into the deadly sanbruno pipeline explosion, another natural gas pipeline disasters, will be holding hearings next month. as laura ingle explains tonight their task is to prevent what watchdog group calls a ticking time-bomb from exploding in other neighborhoods. >> philadelphia, pennsylvania, sanbruno, california, and most recently allan town, pennsylvania. the scene of horrific gas line explosions that left neighborhoods in ruins and 14

people dead. >> we are not doing near as good a job as we should be able to do. >> more than 2800 significant gas pipeline accidents have been recorded across the country since 1990. a third of them causing death and significant injuries. >> we have an inning infrastructure all across the country. and particularly in the eastern half of the country and pennsylvania. >> there are more than 210 natural gas pipeline gas pipeline systems made of cast and, steel and plastic which snake underground throughout the lower 48 states. 21,000 miles of it through heavily populated area. a dangerous combination say watchdog groups. >> cast iron pipes will fail and the law envisioned that these things would be replaced over time. here we are more than a century later. we still have these things in the ground and they are kind of a ticking time-bomb. >> reporter: by law private and public pipeline operators are required to conduct leak surveys which continue to be one of the most important ways to ensure the safety of the

. two passionate adversaries faced off today on a proposed leash law that could ban some dogs from bay area beaches and parks. jim vargas was at today's meeting where the debate over dogs is topic number one. >> reporter: not a question of all dogs on leash or unleashed everywhere. the national park service says there would be a mix. some would ban unleashed dogs all together. but at christie field a quarter of the beach would be re sevenned for un leashed dogs.

all in the dog management plan and it is 2400 pages long. this was the second of four open houses for people to ask park service officials about specifics and make comments. some people are development in their stand. >> i think it's terrible. it's taking away from people what they have enjoyed for years. and what they promised us when they created this park. >> reporter: the park service says it is aiming to give something to everyone. dog lovers, environmentalists who say dogs dig up precious plantings and people who want to protect birds. >> this is about protecting park resources. it is about providing a balance and a range of opportunities and experiences. >> reporter: in the end you sense there has to be compromise. >> i am the kind of person that, you know, you don't have to explain it extensively to me. tell me once that it is not go ahead for the wildlife and the national park, and i get it. >> reporter: some think people do more damage. >> i have seen people do this where they run up and down the dunes in the planted areas. and they just in one use they destroy, you know, the

plantings that we did. >> reporter: the park service has been getting about 1,000 comments a day on this draft. the real plan won't be implemented for another couple of years. the next open house is at fort mason monday afternoon. in san francisco, jim vargas, ktvu, channel 2 news. house minority leader nancy pilosi is home in san francisco tonight after visiting pier 70 to call for more investment in the nation's ports. pilosi met with workers at san francisco's pier 70 this morning and warned that house republicans are proposing deep cuts to infrastructure investment, including dredging at the port of san francisco. pilosi says port modernization will create jobs, grow the economy and reduce the long- term deficit. one of the largest u.s. anti-trust investigations has resulted in fines and even jail sentences for more than 20 incident national airlines and their executives. investigators found a paper trail laying out agreements since 2,000 to set passengers

and cargo surcharges. convicted airlines include british airways, korean air and air france klm. they admitted wrongdoing. several asian airlines are also named in related consumer lawsuits. no major u.s. carriers have been charged. government health officials tonightare warning mothers to- be about the potential dangers of painkillers. researchers have found the use of prescription strength codeine in the early stages of pregnancy doubles the risk of having a child born with a heart defect. the c -- cdc says there needs to be more research done on women with pregnancy. doctors should talk to their pregnant patients about the strategy. it claims like a house fire claimed the beloved pet. when long beach firefighters entered the home that was filled with smoke on thursday they found the month(s) agoless body of a 10-year-old boxer in the bathroom.

. right now the cow palace is the scene of an unusual event as workers sift through countless pg&e documents related to the sanbruno gas pipeline explosion. as ktvu's al was allie rasmus shows us it was a workload. >> reporter: documents came in from pg&e across the state. we watched work crews unload pallets of the documents. they contain records on the pg&e gas transmission pipelines. >> we have been scanning and dissecting more than a quarter of a million hard copy records and putting them into an electronic database. >> reporter: more than 300 pg&e employees are working around the clock to process that paperwork before 7 this morning. the workers lined up outside the building to start a 12-hour shift. they must turn over that information by march 15th. they ordered the utility to do

this work after it found the records on the sanbruno pipe loin were not accurate. -- pipeline were not accurate. >> this is an example of the level of commitment that pg&e is putting forward to inning manying sure that this process is thorough. >> reporter: rick lives a block away from the area destroyed by the pipeline explosion. he says the massive records review is too little, too late. >> they are going to be going after this stuff way, way after the fact. they are only going after it now because they absolutely have to. >> reporter: and this resident says he is still waiting for pg&e to give him information about the future of the pipeline. >> if they are going to take the pipes out and put new ones in. >> reporter: in sanbruno, allie rasmus, ktvu, channel 2 news. in news of the world tonight, the u.s. state department says the recent killing of six unarmed women protestors in ivory coast shows the moral bankruptcy of the regime. this is amateur video from thursday's protest as women

no e-coli was detected in the products but seven people reported e-coli infections possibly linked to the hazelnuts. thousands of shoppers looking to for that rare find came to the oakland ware how do you spell. they flocked to the oakland museum 52 annual white elephant sale. millions of items were on display including furniture, vintage glass, china and boats. most items are a deal and all for a good cause as the money goes to museum programs. the sale continues tomorrow at 333 lancaster street starting at 10 a.m. santa clara officials are trying to secure money for the 49ers stadium project before the state can take back the funds. late yesterday city officials announced they will recommend putting $40 million in redevelopment funds under control of the newly created stadium authority. the authority is set to vote on the matter tuesday night. on wednesday, the legislature is expected to approve governor brown's cost-cutting move to eliminate all of california's

redevelopment agencies. approval may also threaten efforts to build a ballpark in san jose for the oakland as. meanwhile, the national football league and the players union are taking a break from labor talks. according to the nfl's lead negotiator, the two sides still have serious issues and significant differences. talks are scheduled to resume monday in washington. the union and the league have until friday night to hammer out a deal, the second of two extensions. failure to reach a deal could threaten the 2011 season. significant rainfall earlier today up to our north basically an atmospheric river guiding ought of the moisture to the bay area and a good portion of northern california. this will be the impulse we are watching as we head into sunday morning. this moves in early tomorrow morning. as it does we increase the rainfall rate with heavier downpours expected between 4-8. rainfall of a quarter of an inch in the south bay. hovering right around the north bay for the coastal hills. also in the sierra a snow producer maybely up above 6,000 feet where weather winter advisories are in place. the forecast model for tomorrow morning this is the heaviest time with the rain downpours with moderate to heavy rain. here we are at 7:00. take this into the afternoon hours. there will be some more breaks in the activity but still some scattered showers at 12 and 1:00. possibly still some heavier downpours. by late tomorrow afternoon into the evening hours this activity begins to move to the south and also to the east. scale back on the coverage and
