sliding hills, flooding threats, just some of the weather we're looking at. around the region, drivers navigated flooded roads when storm drains were unable to handle all the rain. the chp ran a traffic break to slow cars after a couple of lanes flooded. and in the south bay, a huge fir tree fell on a house. virtually demolishing the home. a woman trapped inside did manage to get out. firefighters say she barely escaped being crushed and is lucky to be alive. tonight we are bringing you live team coverage during the coming hour we will hear from chief meteorologist bill martin and check in with ktvu news crews around the region for live reports on the latest developments. perhaps the most serious problem are in the santa cruz mountains. where dozens of people faced

evacuations. lloyd lacuesta is live in felton where the immediate threat has passed but residents are on alert. >> reporter: the san lorenzo river is still swollen. most of the residents asked to evacuate are back in their homes but keeping an eye on the river. lynne nelson came home tonight. when the river came over it banks it went on to her yard for only time. >> it crested that little back house. >> reporter: there are waters marks on legs of outdoor tables and planters showing how the river had risen when it reached 17 feet just below flood stage, sirens went off. but residents have been through this before. >> we're pretty prepared, we have sandbags at any of the entrance points. >> reporter: most of the homes in this neighborhood are built up two stories. fema loans paid for the remodeling after previous

floods. >> this house was one story, or a story and a half. they came in and said, listen since you live so close to the river you have to jack them all up because of the water. >> reporter: by dinner time, rob moon felt the water was reseeding. even know the flooding markers were still under water. >> the threat is still there. >> reporter: while an evacuation was set up at a near by parking lot, few people went there. the fire department describes lake front residents as resilient. out in contra costa county

and martinez all eyes were on mohambra creek. the high tide was about 7:00 p.m. however the martinez fire department tells ktvu they haven't had any reports of the creek flooding. in oakland, the storm brought down a huge pine tree roots and all. a lot of it wound up in the roadway, crews were forced to cut it up first in order to clear that record for traffic. in pacifica, highway one was closed today. the highway patrol said it was attached to a utility poll that fell down. pg & e is reporting progress tonight as its crews work to restore electricity. buildings around the 700 lock of laurel avenue in -- 700 700 block of laurel avenue were without electricity.

no estimate on when power will be restored there. right now pg & e are reporting close to 1,300 customers are without electricity. that totals 3,000 customers area wide. and what a wet day it was. we've had a very wet march but tonight was the strongest of all the storms that have come in here. we have 3 inches of rain in the coastal hills of jenner. out to twin peaks and daily city we have a few light showers. but again really nothing like we saw today. take a look at some of the rain totals. here we are now.

you can see benloman close to 3- inches of rain. the rain pummels the santa cruz mountains. that's why we have problems on the san leandro river and pescadero creek. a big storm, there's more rain in the forecast. nothing like we just saw. i'll have more back here. the flooding caused massive troubles around the region. one driver in fact, told us it took him 90 minutes just to get from fremont to oakland. ktvu's jana katsuyama is live tonight with what happened and what the situation is like now, jana. >> the good news is right now, all lanes north bound on 880 have been reopened. it was closed because part of the roadways were washed away by the rain creating a terrible commute in some places. we're backed up with traffic until well after 7:00 tonight. it was a deluge that dumped more water than any highway

flooded the highway. raking up hoggy degree as drivers waited in long lines to get home. >> there was a lot of flooding in the streets, so it was pretty rough. >> reporter: also today a high wind advisory was issued for trucks in the richmond-san rafael bridge. the storm making for a very rough ride for drivers throughout the bay area. reporting live in oakland, jana katsuyama, ktvu channel two news. a mud slide in niles canyon forced the cancellation of all ace trains tonight and for tomorrow as well. the slide is on union pacific tracks east of fremont. an east bay spokesman tells ktvu news it's unclear when the tracks will be cleared so all friday train service is cancelled between stockton, tracy, livermore, and san jose. flooding in that area also forced caltrans to close i four. motorists are now being advised

to use 680 instead. in marin county, rain flooded business. and >> reporter: the calls kept coming. and so did the rain from store fronts to streets to yards. the runner water -- >> reporter: it just started coming in. >> uh-huh. >> reporter: was coming in everywhere. the sudden late morning run off poured into a liquor store. neighbors business owners closed their doors and put out the bags. >> i would say yeah, an inch an hour. >> reporter: so what have you been doing? >> just sandbagging. >> reporter: up in the hills of san anselmo, more water it popped over a manhole.

>> i heard a louder sound of the rain and the water coming down than normal. came outside and saw lots of mud. >> it's like a lake around the corner. >> reporter: and then there's mcconnell. who said water damaged his house three years ago, and this time around, he raised his home. it worked. >> what's the name of this street? >> lake avenue. >> river avenue? >> river avenue, yes. >> reporter: and this river that has caused so much problems in the past, well today it stayed within its banks but it was moving rapidly. since monday, a major rock slide has blocked nelson road. santa cruz public works crews had hoped to begin building a temporary road around that slide today but the storms

in petaluma tonight a driver crashed into a house and wound up inside the house. he went across five lanes of traffic and through a chain link fence. there were two people inside the home. they narrowly escaped by hurt but their house sustained major damage. the young man who confessed chauncey bailey took the stand for the prosecution. broussard testifieded. bay's defense attorney said broussard cannot be trusted. >> he is a liar. that's my opinion. i believe he will admit on the

winds and heavy rain caused the 60 to 70-foot fir tree to come crashing. the tree barely missed one of the homeowners and punched holes through the roof and ceiling of the house. a 40-mile stretch of highway 1 in big sur is cut off tonight after another rock and mud slide. this latest slide happened this morning near lime kiln state park. crews were working to clear degree from the road when a boulder fell and damaged their front loader. the other mud slide collapsed a section of highway 1 just north of big sur. that section of the road isn't expected to reopen until next month. yosemite national park partly reopened today but the power is still out. the park was closed for three days after a storm left roads blocked and power lines down. park buildings are works on generators. lodging including curry village

is expected to open tomorrow. campgrounds should open on monday. drivers are experiencing treacherous conditions at this hour. a winter storm warning is in effect until 11:00 a.m. tomorrow. interstate80 is closed tonight from coalfax to the nevada state line. ktvu's ken pritchett made it up 80 as far as blue canyon today where he found white out conditions. >> reporter: this one shot tells the story in the sierra today. a semi truck had just exited interstate 80 at nayak. his trailer twisted. but truck drivers were not alone. >> when i get you out we'll turn you around. >> reporter: the driver of this mercedes plowed into a snow bank. >> i think he might have been going a little fast. >> reporter: tim brown with the chp says there has been many spin out accidents and that's not all. >> a couple of hours ago we got

reports of snow slide under the freeway. with the car went into a freeway and hit a car up by cisco grove. heavy snow and strong winds caused flowing snow to erase visibility at times. >> chain controls were in effect this afternoon at the alta exhibit. it was a slow snow at about 2,500 feet. some drivers were turned around. tim tarruso is driving but expects a long day. >> probably close to four or five hours at least. >> reporter: that's if he made it before the interstate was closed. this is interstate 80 it's covered in snow with whiteout conditions. ken pritchett, ktvu news. a new light shoáus out --

today's relentless rainstorm caused problems for residents of a condo complex on the peninsula. many came home from work this evening to find their garage flooded. ktvu's amber lee is live now in buerlingame. >> reporter: rain came gushing down overwhelming storm drains and flowed into the garage of this 21 unit condo building.

>> el camino was flooded like a whirlpool. it was just like it was up to my knees. right above my knees. it took crews more than six hours to pump out the water. several homeowners told us this is deja vu. >> i'm just devastated. this is the second time this has happened. you know i come home from work and i find this. i lost my car in 2003. >> now the elevator is out of commission until we can get it repaired. >> reporter: flood waters also damaged this elevator. without it james keith says his 81-year-old mother will have difficult getting around so she's staying with friends. >> she's going to have to probably spend a night away because you know, she can't come back like this. >> reporter: none of the vehicles in the garage appear to be severely damaged. still homeowners say the city needs to be more. they say the storm drains are not enough and something has to be done to divert the run off into a culvert. residents say being flooded twice in eight years is too
