welcome to update news. thanks for joining us. presidential politics is making the news, no matter where you are. president obama is running for reelection. students here at the university face a choice for their new leader in the coming weeks. the two candidates for associated students president faced off in a debate weapons. director of external affairs is running against the president.

used books all the time. so it is really phenomenal. and that is off actual publisher's price. so you don't have freight and tax and shipping on there, just 5% off. so is going to be a major difference. s js u is the 13th school to contract with barnes & noble. a 5% payout for students that return their books to be used by teachers in the following semester. i think this is great, and means bigger discounts for the students i don't when you think about the reach of barnes & noble, they are a national bookstore and they have a lot of locations in california. go pick them up at another location if they run out here. >> we won't get the benefits of it, because we are graduating this year. >> seems like a lot of good stuff is coming to san jose

battles, and a special election. s js u is heavying a behind the scenes tour of the state cap. the day will include a round trip bus ride to and from campus, a tour of the capital and interaction with key members of legislature. students interested can sign up in clark hall and pay $206 to be a part of the tour. free passes to ride public transit for people who have no place to call home mary ann mends has the story. for people living on the streets, it might as well be $600, they can't afford it. but help from valley transportation authority is going to help with buses and

the light rail. >> it helped me to go places to eat when i didn't have enough to eat. >> that help turned into a home for graci, who was homeless for several years, but now has a place to stay. santa clara county is conning a program many may not be aware of. the program offers homeless passes. this really helps homeless get back on their feet. >> you get job training, medical care, go to the food bank, whatever services they need. getting services is to be able to get there. >> the program distribute 1800 stickers each quarter to the homeless. many passengers support this program. >> maybe it will help them to get around and get jobs and get active in the community.

i see it ads a plus. they said they are elated when they get their pass. they can finally get somewhere. >> it helped me look around where i wanted to get a place, so i can actually say yes, thank youch. thank you. the program costs $110,000 each year. the money comes from the city of san jose, the mental health department and the social health services. update news. things are looking better for the united states and other major economies, they are showing signs of improvement lately. according to the organization for economic cooperation and development. the united states, canada, britain and other major economies will experience around 3% growth, due to increasing private investment. there is also good news for graduating seniors.

according to another economic study, for students who will enter the job market this year. the national association said jobs for college graduates is soon to be on the rise. susan rockwell of s js u's career center has definitely noticed the improvement. >> i asked one of my colleagues yesterday, he is our liaison to the college of business and the applied college of science and arts. have you been hearing students getting more jobs more than a year ago? he said definitely he has students who have already landed jobs before graduation. >> the national soreiation of colleges and employers reports the first increase since 2008. a job fair is coming up next tuesday afternoon. it is expected to have 50 to 60

employers who would be hiring students for internships and full-time preliminary. a workshop held before spring break helped undergrads sharpen resumes and work skills. employment specialist douglas evans said before going to a job fair or interview, students should research the company they work for. >> we are still very competitive. we are suffering effects and students should be compared for a very competitive job market. >> the job fair tuesday will be held in the student union ballroom, startling at noon. an e vein the center puts on in hopes visitors will reflect

on their own biases and premises. cal stephens has the story. due to the content of the rooms and to respect the privacy of the participants in taking the experience in, no cameras were allowed into the exhibit. hopefully you sparked some change in the person going through it, to want to learn more or educate others or even take action in the change. the rooms were set up by campus and community groups. >> we'll definitely look at all the resources they have available and see other organizations i can join and see what else i can do to help. this year there were six rooms, each examining a different facet of injustice. >> think about how individual actions affect other people and how corporations and those institutions affect people in their daily lives. students in the greater community had a chance to take a trip down the dark side of

human nature, in carrying stereotypes of race, gender, religion and stature. haven't changed. we are still going through the same segregations we have been going through. it is just not as obvious as it was back in vegas. economic forces were singled out as those of oppression. kyle stephens, s js u news. rod friedman is with the group that designed the tunnel. >> given we could be take cameras in the tunnel, could you tell us what your section was like? >> my section was the hope and action room, so it wasn't one of the main six rooms, but actually the last room the students or participants walked through. and this room was to promote hope after seeing all these negative things in our world, we wanted to inspire the students to take action and leave with

more of a positive feeling instead of thanagetive sadness. >> so what else did you want participants to get out of the event besides that? >> i think the main idea of the tunnel was to bring awareness to the different problems and oppressions within our society. not only our country, but the world as a whole. by going through the different rooms and seeing the different problems that are occurring, it really approximate brought awareness and made them reflect on what's going on. >> why did you personally get involved with the tunnel of oppression project? >> i work at the caesar chavez activity center. my job is to take on projects i feel passionately about. my boss and i decided to do the hope and action room. i wanted it to be an inspiring place for people to come after they saw all these tragedies that our world really does

know of his plans to run for a second term. it was an early start, with sources close to the president hinting he hopes to raise $1 billion for his campaign. as of now. no contenders from the republican party have announced a run. the polls show the struggling economy is most americans's biggest concern. s js u democratic caucus member megan young says. >> let them know this is what i want, this is how i want to it. how can we accomplish this together? >> mr. obama has dealt with the recession, entering the war ending the war in iraq and libya all in the first years of the presidency. you may recall the threat

to burn the quran on 9/11 but the united states convinced him that would create a an inflamed environment in the middle east. japan is still reeling from a quake that hit off the coast of sendei. the quake triggered a tsunami warning, however the warning was lived night minutes later 20 people were also injured. this was the largest aftershock since the earthquake on march 11. southwest airlines is in trouble after one of its boeing 737s had to do an emergency landing last week when a part of its roof was ripped open. since that incident five more southwest planes have been taken

in for repairs because of cracks. now kyle stephens joins us this week for arts and entertainment. kyle right here, you have. films feature two products of s js u film company. >> the opportunity to work on functioning film projects. our films have two features. >> who wants cake? for a film to ever see the light of day, students must present a script, budget and all to the company. the company runs its projects over the summer and the class lasts 14 hours a day over 40 days, mimicking a real life

film. we are training them to go to hollywood and filmmakerring with a better set of tools. students are here to get as much practical experience as possible. >> i want to be a filmmaker. >> the projects provide networking among peers who will work above and alongside each other in the future. >> i know that. for a state among that i feel like all of us need to work together. filmmakerring is as much a business. >> you get a degree at a university, people are still interested in you. even though you might still be in film. students can use their experiences to land jobs once out of school. >> you worked on a feature film and directed a feature film and acted in the film and it was in

a legitimate film festival. >> san jose state's film department has had many graduates find great success in history and beyond. the man with 100 disguises will land in the south bay. martin lawrence. the actor comedian who started in blue streak, life, bad boys and big mama's house coming up on friday, april 15th at 7:00 p.m. this will be the first time martin lawrence will have his comedy show on campus of san jose state. s js u.edu du is undergoing an overhaul. rather than hire a costly firm from the outside, the university hired a student-based studio

called can he sign creature. if you are interested in testing out the new site, the new version of the website should be ready for launch by fall semester. scary movies can be a bit of an acquired taste. look at insidious at a family moves into a new house unexplained spooky stuff happens. culminating in a young boy falling into a medical coma. but maybe it is more than just the house that is haunted. the director is from melee sha. there is a bit more life and

background for the characters. cedar rapids is a foreign film. one set in the far away land of the midwest, where drugs, sex and insurance takes center stage. i say foreign as there is a certain quaintness to the film i found enjoyable. in the film the insurance salesman has to leave his hometown possibly for the same time to take the place of a senior salesman who died under suspicious circumstances. at the biggest insurance event west of the mississippi. what tim ends up winning are friends, a wild weekend and a proper pair of balls. i never thought a movie could be as remotely entertaining as cedar rapids turns out to be.

they started off strong and as they run here, already a 2-0 lead. putting the aggies up 2-0 in the top of the third. wagner is brought in. the aggies now up 4-0. the spartans finally got into the swing of things in the bottom of the fifth. as caylee cuts the deficit to one. the plate is crossed, making it 4-3 davis. the spartan momentum comes in to tie up off mercer's back. the s js u baseball team came up just short to the silicone valley stanford rivals by a

score of 5-2. the team returns home later today at 1:00 p.m. plus the part polo team had a hard fought battle against the bruins of ucla last saturday afternoon. they will now get ready to do battle in santa clara this weekend. finally the last gymnastic championship was last month. one lone spartan continues to compete at the national level. after a standout performance in regionals, junior kati may life ties on the floor. she is just the fourth spartan in history to compete with the
