deadline. we'll show you how the parties came together to update the issue. update news starts now. hello everybody and welcome to update news i'm kyle stevens. >> thanks for joining us. with record budget cuts and larger deficits looming for the csu system, leadership is more important than you. sju will have a new president starting this summer. and this week the president selected a new president. the current president was re- elected this week. the results were announced thursday and as candidates campaigned aggressively, students casts their votes. the associated press is decked out in white and blue in honor

-- there were two qualifies candidates running for president. kevin starks an the incumbent tomas. students can vote at one of the two election booths that were set up. they could also vote on line through their my sju accounts. >> i don't think 'seen much changed. they handed flyers, talked to students and put up their campaign signs around campus. as held an election voting party tuesday night where they had entertainment including a junk pile. steeling -- polls closed thursday at noon. as students count down, the anticipation group and finally the announcement was made.

>> with thomas. >> i'm really excited and i think we're going to have tremendous change for sure. the number of people that voted, the people that showed up here. it shows they're going to have a president and it's going to be a different issue for sure. >> with 2100 students vote this students tied with the second highest turn out so far in 2006. some students say that as should have advertised the election more and some banned together to create the petition. >> that really brought to as a lot of attention how they're not promoted that much. i think that's something that needs to be done more. >> i didn't know if there was an election going on. >> other candidates who were elected include calvin who won the vice president position. he was the only candidate in

the running. leroy came out victorious in the race with 29% of the vote while matthew sampson had 27% of the vote. mark is now the director of business affairs, he has 53% of the votes while fellow candidate john fell short with 47%. in total close to 7.9% of the student body voted. the new board will begin training over the summer to prepare for their term in the fall. joining us now live is the newly elected president. congratulations on your win. >> thank you. yes, i'm here. >> coming back for your second term, what have you learned that might help you for next year. >> i appreciate it. tremendous learning experience. you're the official spokesman of as. , which is huge, you serve on

18 different university committees including executive committee. it's a huge learning experience. i remember i was overwhelmed coming. i think we can do a lot of things having that experience already. >> what's your main priority for your next term. >> budget cuts. we're actually going right now in an hour leaving for sacramento. we're going to go to lobby legislatures and it's called the chess, which is california higher education summit. we're going to learn how to lob biand then lobby all we can until monday. >> i think it will be good because they're well informed. a lot of them have big plans. not to say that, you know, the budget is going to change but we're going to do a lot of efforts. >> thank you. and that was the president.

>> thank you. >> it seems every year we hear about the system to cut programs. this year students and faculty from all 23 campuses are taking class action. here is more on the story. despite on and off rain students and faculty gathered in today's protests cuts to the scu budgets. it's followed by a march to the state building insan jose before culminating back on campus. this was just one of many protests occurring at all 23scu campuses. students and faculty csu tuition went up 242% in the past decade. students took particular aim at

chancellor charles reed. >> he gets paid more than obama, i think that's the bold way we can't get across we're turning students away when our faculty isn't getting pay cuts. it's a total allocation of the cuts. they point you are the that cuts to the scu system could have longed some effects. >> students that graduate from here usually stay here in california that's putting money back be into the economy for every one economy that csu gives $5.43 goes back out into the state. >> after the march students administration building in talent hall. a lot of the interest. in the end the campus community agreed this is the first stage of very long battle in the future of education in california. this is not the end it's the

beginning. if you're going to take political work. they're going to have to convince students that have more power than they realize but don't vote. >> governor jerry brown has signed bills cutting $1.4 billion from the states colleges and universities for next years. future years the out look is now bleak. >> that was really shocking to here. i had no idea that chancellor reed got paid more than obama. >> when i started here he -- i made about 2 grand a semester. >> thank god that i'm graduating. >> good for you. >> political science students got a unique behind the seens -- scenes tour. you'll be able to see students get a look at the capitol

building. it focused on the path and ultimately into law. >> i was trying to tell those guys, they really want to know more about how things work in the capital not about the furniture. >> students succeed in both houses learning the protocols and voting and debate over a bill. former sju students have jobs an even elected officist in capitol capitol. >> gas prices continue to soar they've earned the -- the average price per gallon is $4.22 and $4 and 19 cents in san jose. the increase in prices over the past few months has drivers looking for the cheapest in town. however they won't see anything under $4 making this seem like a joke. the drastic increases are causing people to ditch the four wheels for two. >> i do a lot of things, so if

i have to go locally, i'll go by -- i was very happy, you know,. >> although people have been avoiding the pump altogether and the demand for gasoline in the united states has decreased, the prices continue to rise. the unrest in the middle east played a huge role in the pricing of gas hire in the u.s. the country of libya alone supplies 2 million barrels of crude oil a day, which is about 2.5% of the global supply. the bay tae -- japanese student association held another fund- raiser tuesday for relief efforts in japan. selling candy, wristbands and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, the two groups raised $360. the wristband were popular seller and completely sold out the last time a fund-raiser were held. $410 were raised then. money raised will be located to

a local charity. to help with future efforts the japanese student association can be found and contacted on facebook. >> graduation is coming up and with all the last minute projects and finals it's about time to repair for the big day. commencement says in order to prepare for graduation, students should go to the display and start in the bookstore. and he says students should make an effort to go out to the ceremony. >> it's about two hour ceremony begins the mark -- the mark begins at 9:00 and ceremony starts at 9:30. >> it includes the cap, gown and tas l. it tells garage -- sells graduation announcement and diploma frames. the spring job and internship there was swamped with students and potential

employers. it was amazed at the turn out this semester. >> hundreds of students attended the spring job as the city union ballroom tuesday. then when signing relief with the representative who are hiring. >> we're encouraging our students looking for summer jobs as well as internship to check out jobs. 80% increase in career positions over last year. >> career center employment coach had students include their job plus skills and resume. the fair was last chance for students for next week employers for internship and summer jobs. >> the job fair is really one way for students to connect with them players. it's a great way to network. there's so many other channels that students can use on campus and off campus for their

be avoided. the rising fees, i i can't afford to stay here to exploit all the parts that i'd like to. it's limited my opportunities as a person. that's assuming i get into the classes. there's been one particular class that i've been trying to add, not being able to do it. >> i will have to work more than one job and i will eliminate all my extra curricula activities. it's affecting everyone. it's hard to stay focused on your school work. we're getting stressed out with all these budget cuts having to pay extra prices and the classes are harder to get into. personally the budget cuts have affected me more than i ever would now i'm forced to take out more loans and it's kind of like nothing with my plan that i had for myself.

>> now it's time for news out in the real world. president obama said in his speech that democrats and republicans need to put egos aside and work together for the good of the country. the government narrowly avoided a shutdown last friday. mr. obama proposed the idea of debt fail safe trigger which will automatically stake. the president wants to cut pending for federal pension plans. agriculture subsidies and it will cut down on pentagon spending. the proposed budget will eliminate $4 trillion in the deficit in the next 12-year. >> the labor of department announced that there were more than 3 million job openings in february. that number is up by more than

half a million by the same last year. washington along with the up coming april 18th filing deadlines have americans thinking about their taxes. although much of the rhetoric you hear might make you think otherwise, a new pole thinks the taxes they are paying are fair. to the associated press 54% of the people say they are paying a fair amount in taxes even when they're aren't going to receive a refund. hay say the survey speaks directly to the -- >> in washington between the republicans who say taxes are too heavy and democrats who say that some people aren't taxed new. i think the pole shows that voters are more in agreement than democrats than republicans. >> just because they say taxes are fair. some responded that the rich had too many loopholes to avoid

paying taxes but still only 29% of those surveyed say that we should raise taxes to make up for the national deficit. >> university house sponsored their own raid last week. campus food from epic backgrounds and dance routines were for group as well as the salsa group. the goal of the event was to showcase diversity. once the sun sets, campus vote turned into a drug free raid. outside joe west hall was electrified as students danced and listen to different djs. >> and now it's time for app of the week. having trouble deciding what to do on a friday night, movie night out out may be just what you're looking for. the app plans the whole etching for you from where to shop, to

dinner to the kind of dinner you're in the mood for, just select what activities you want to do, what kind of film you want and the app will plan it all out. it maps that direction to all location and let's users. movie night out is a great idea a little bit indecisive about what they're in the mood for. >> i got some really exciting movie reviews, as the saying goes, what is one man's trash is another man's treasure, in this case it could be a new wardrobe, hosted their annual trash and fashion show thursday evening. the events organizers hoped the fashion show will raise awareness about what people throw away and how it can be reused once it was made out of newspaper and cup holders. each garment had to be made with 80% of recycles material.

performed at the california theater in downtown san jose from april 23rd to may 8th. it's reaching out by offering tickets to $11 for students with valid id cards. the catch is you must show up 90 minutes before current time. i took a look at two films this week. arthur is remake of 1981 film by the same name. russell graham starts very drunk, rich and childish playboy who spends his day squandering all his wealth owned by necessities. and of course alcohol. helen marion playing the nanny cleans up the aftermath. arthur must choose between having it all financially and playing by his mother's rules or being his own man by giving it all up. i really want to like arthur, i really do. rest sell works well with the childish immature character. helen puts on a great

performance as hobson, one that is full of dry humor, sarcasm and jokes about how she will look up at arthur after she dies, if you know what i mean. how russell adds to it, he also takes away from it. halfway through the movie i found myself wondering how much longer i had to deal with the what i was witnessing. should you see him yes, wait for the dvd when he starts to be over bearing you can pause it, grab a snack and take some time to recover. source code as captain of army helicopter who ends up involved in agouta experiment that allows him to relive the last 8 minutes of someone's life. it's definite in the same kind of mind bending realm. there are twists, turns antons of action. i'm not talking about the kind of action where things blow up for the sake of blowing up. i'm talking about the kind of

action where you won't want to leave your seat. you should definitely reconsider. surprisingly. he gives the perfect performance as captain stevens fresh out needed for the road is all there. guys will appreciate the extra it delivers with many of his lines an ladies will appreciate the fact that the film stars, don't be shocked when you hear it of every single woman in the theater when his face shows up on screen for the first time. i wish i could tell you more, this is the kind of film that's better to see when you knowless abit. that does it for arts an entertainment, back to you guys. >> this is an interesting hypothetically speaking if you had 8 minutes left in the last of your life, what would you do. >> i would probably get very excited and just -- live eight minutes to the best i can. i minus well party it up.

they wanted. in the bottom of the third makes a move on a error to score one of two run ins a inning putting the spartans up going into the fourth. the spartans had no mercy after being beaten by them 10-0 earlier in the season. >> once we got the lead, the guys did a good job protecting, we stayed on the attack and took a sting out of the bass last time we played them they beat us up. you know, so we kind of returned the favor tonight. >> the spartans didn't indeed return the favor with the score up 10-0. and last week's show we introduced you to jim, who will compete in a championships in cleveland ohio. this week erin caught up with and talks about her expectations in her partner spotlight. >> what are you doing going into it. >> i think i'm trying to stay focused and kind of learn a lot and do my best.

>> and you're only the 4th spartan that compete at this level. how does that feel to know that you're in the history books. >> it's amazing. to be here is just to be competing at a different level. >> and you're only jr. how you prepared yourself and got yourself to this level. >> i think every year i try to get a little bit better and helped me -- i got more music this year. so perfecting what it can already do. >> it was acting championship in 2009. has she told you anything about what to expect or how to get ready. >> she came back after the championship and kind of told us you're welcome know, what to expect like it's very kind of overwhelming because there's a lot of really good teams there that are really crowded but keep an open mind and stay focused and hopefully you'll be here. >> what are you expecting for

yourself. >> i expect to do my best if i happen to be an all american, that's my ultimate goal that  will be great. but i'm going in there really honored. >> are you a little nervous. >> absolutely. i'm very nervous, but. >> okay. >> from the rest of spartans sports this week, the women's softball team lost to stanford with a score of 3-1. they will return home from a three game road trip to take on nevada starting friday april 22nd at 3:00 p.m. plus the water polo team completed a four game sweep at the bronco invitational. they will now do battle against stanford on april 22nd at 6:00 p.m. and finally with the regular season over, the golden state warriors will not qualify for the post season for fourth straight year. never the less the nba playoff,
