gunshots claim another life in oakland this evening. initial reports are that a street fight turned deadly. good evening i'm julie haener. >> and i'm frank somerville. within the past hour the coroner removed the victim's body from outside a home on seventh avenue near east 18th

not far from lake merit. john sasaki is live on the scene where he's been trying to piece together exactly what happened. >> reporter: we're standing just off east 18th street. just over there you can see the crime scene where officers are still working. that's where the gentleman was shot and killed just a few moments ago. at about 6:00 p.m. gunfire shattered a quiet evening in oakland. >> doing some work and that's when i heard the shots. i waited because i wasn't sure where they came from. then i heard screaming and yelling after that. >> reporter: the gunfire broke out at the yellow house just a block from the church. police are releasing few details but they are saying that it might be a robbery. >> we found a male adult suffering from multiple gunshot

wounds. they attempted to revive the victim. >> reporter: we we were told the victim was asian. one man told me it was his landlord's brother. family and friends were on scene and obviously very distrout. they declined to speak with me. but a woman who grew up in the neighborhood said she is devastated by this ongoing violence in oakland. >> it hurts every time. because if you lose one person, i don't care what your color, what your gender, your nationality, your income level. if we're losing one to 15 people that's too many. life is precious. >> reporter: police didn't officially give out any details or a get away vehicle but we have heard there might have been as many as five people. john sasaki, ktvu. and we have more developing news out of oakland right now police are investigating another shooting this time with three people injured. a police sergeant says officers found shell casings on the

sidewalk but initially no victims. eventually police located two men with gunshot wounds to their legs. medics took them to highland hospital. someone drove the third shooting victim to the same hospital. police officers in san jose have agreed tonight to cut their pay by 10%. it's a bit to save jobs in light of the massive deficit. some officers may still be laid off, the question is how many. >> reporter: 126 san jose police officers got pink slips this week and many phasing a lay off such as lauren larson are relieved the county made a contract offer today. the offer includes a 10% increase as well as reduction

in sick time. but the concessions don't necessarily mean no lay offs. >> kind of a bitter pill to swallow. >> absolutely. >> reporter: the officers in lank must still approve the deal. and they hope the city will reduce the number of lay offs as well as avoid a second round of lay offs. >> we hope the city will do what they can do. use money to save them. >> reporter: detective pam truong is skeptical that today's officer will help him. >> i know that i will get laid off and that's all i know because i'm holding a pink slip. >> some officers that did not get a pink slip say the officer

makes them sceptical. san francisco's new police chief says he's going to turn down a pay raise. chief gregg surh turned down a 5% cost of living increase. suhr is well compensated at 260,000. the league is ordering teams to lock out players once again. late today a federal appeals court granted a temporary stay of the ruling that ended the lock out. now the courts will decide if that order should stand or be overturned. thousand of 49er players took advantage of today's brief window and returned to the practice facilities. it's not clear how long the stay will stay in place.

and the giants suspended mcdowell for slurs he made. president obama trended south and created devastating tornadoes. the president and first lady met with survivors in tuscaloosa alabama. he heard about how people found refuge as the quake hit. it's the nation's deadliest series of tornadoes since 1932. we have more with a live report from alabama and the latest on

the recovery efforts. here in the bay area, san jose firefighters responded to a fire at the herb appeal. the fire broke out at about 3:00 a.m. the street dispensary is again a ruin. a neighbor shows us pictures of the flames on the ktvu channel 2 morning news. the fire burned a hole through his roof. he and three others are now homeless. more than 75 residents of an east palo alto apartment complex are going to be out of their homes for week because of a fire we told you about last month. as you can see the fire did the most damage to the third floor. damage was contained to a few apartments, unfortunately the entire building is uninhabitable. today investigators have said they have nothing. britain's royal parties had two parties to attend this

evening. he wore a tux and she wore a long white dress but not her wedding gown. prince charles and his wife camilla accompanied them. it's told that the best man harry plans to serve breakfast for those who have the stamina to stay up that long. william and cate were standing on the balcony of buckingham palace along with their family. the crowd cheers and they laughed. tonight the celebration continues atop knob hill in san francisco. nearly 300 people are attending the british consulate's royal ball. and jana katsuyama has a view of all the celebration going on. >> reporter: some of these people have been up since 1:00 this morning watching that wedding and they are still

moments from the big arrival to kate's dress along with the vows. the pomp and ceremony ahead in just 13 minutes. it was a no go for the space shuttle endeavour today. today the shuttle remains in the shuttle launch pad. nasa said it will try again monday. some 700,000 people turned out hoping to see the launch. after endeavour there is one more shuttle launch scheduled and that is atlantis in june. president obama and his family traveled to florida to see the launch today. instead they got a tour of nasa. president obama had a private visit with shuttle commander mark kelly and his wife wounded congresswoman giffords. she was on hand today to watch the launch and may stay for monday's attempt. the bay area weekend is here. i'm going to have in less than 10 minutes your tomorrow's forecast. and you're going to notice an

police in a small peninsula community are investigating

strange graffiti that has shown up in several places. the case may be a hate crime. san carlos airport is relatively quiet, but there are still airplanes in the tarmac. federal officials are looking for whoever jumped the fence and painted graffiti on the tails of two small planes. it happened on the eastern part of the airport sometime tuesday night or wednesday morning. the manager of this hotel in the other side of the airport fence says vulgarity was sprayed on a door. one plane had a cartoon head with the words himsas. today we found a similar cartoon head drawing blind a health care center behind the airport. and the words himsas showed up at a home two weeks ago.

quite right as he was driving along grizzly peak this morning. what he actually spotted turned out to be a honda civic. the car has plunged 150 feet down an enbankment. rescuers said it was quite a shore to free the driver and pull him up the hill. tay also said -- they also said he was in and out of consciousness. union city police are looking for a woman they consider at risk. he said he last heard from his wife between late last night and early this morning. the woman's abandoned vehicle was found on tuesday in san mateo. police say she left behind medicine she takes on a daily bay sit. . alameda prosecutors charged a newark man with murder today for killing their two children.

when police responded. jason odem monroe was stabbed to death. earlier row had been convicted involving castillo. as ktvu rob roth tells us, the chronicle is accusing the white house of not telling the truth. this video was shot by chronicle political reporter carla marinuchi eight days ago and posted on the paper's website. it shows a peaceful protest that included singing during an appearance by the president at the st. regis hotel. but the chronicle is reporting today that the white house is threatening to exclude marinuchi from being the pool reporter because marinuchi used a video instead of only sticking to a written report. >> for carla to use social

california democrats are tackling national politics tonight in sacramento. delegates began checking in today at the party's annual state convention. the next goal is washington. during the three day convention, delegates will discuss ways to take back the house of representatives. $1 million. that's how much california loses in state taxes. it recommends california starts collecting sales tax on internet sales based out of state such as amazon. right now customers are supposed to calculate and pay sales taxes when they shop online. stocks posted gains today finishing their best month so far this year. the dow jones was up 47 points with a solid 4% was up 47 points. the nasdaq was up one point. despite nervousness about the economy and inflation.

oh my god. this is new video of that deadly tornado plowing through tuscaloosa on wednesday. a college student who shot the video said the storm lasted about five minutes destroying everything in its path. lives have been torn apart by deadly tornadoes and communities across the south tonight are beginning to count

their losses. reporter casey steegal is in the alabama with how people are doing after the wreckage. >> reporter: a search is still on the way at this house. a number of people remain unaccounted for. this as the president of the united states made a stop in this state earlier making a promise to the survivors. >> you want cream or sugar? >> sugar would be great. >> reporter: cream and sugar from one neighbor to the other. it is one of the few things neighbors can still do for one another in the aftermath of a deadly tornado. >> when i got cornered to the back part of the house. i heard trees snapping like match sticks. >> reporter: as rescuers try to

recover bodies, tornado victims from about six states still coming to grip with the depth of destruction. this is what their new reality looks like at least for now. >> you wake up and you see everything you worked for and how long it took you and it all gone. >> yeah about 10 seconds it's gone. >> reporter: president obama says he has never seen damage like this before. he met with families in tuscaloosa and making a promise to help. >> we're going to make sure that you're not forgotten and that we do everything we can do make sure that we rebuild. >> reporter: this year's surge of spring tornadoes have been brutal. killing hundreds and leaving thousands homeless. emerging from the rubble are clear sobering recollections. >> i actually thought we were going to die. that's what was going through my head. i could look up, the rain was hitting me. >> reporter: and as night has fallen a mandatory curfew is in effect for many parts of this state as some 2,000 national guard troops are already on the ground assisting members of

local law enforcement. that is the latest we are live in concord, alabama tonight. casey steegal, ktvu news. the legislation set tough emission standards for new cars. the u.s. chamber of commerce and national automobile association went to court to try to overturn the law. they argue the law hurts car sales. 14 other states have adopted similar standards modeled after california's law. a federal appeals court ruling today allows expanded stem cell research. researchers home stem cell research will help patients. those opposed are not likely to

succeed in stopping funding of stem cell research. social security is about to phase out paper checks starting next week anyone who applies for social security or other federal benefits must sign up for direct deposit. the government plans to phase out paper checks entirely by 2013. about 85% of social security beneficiaries receive payments through direct deposit. even though the treasury deposit issues 125 million checks a year. if you have an old prescription drugs at home tomorrow is the cay to get rid -- day to get rid of them. it's national prescription drug take back day. the effort is under way to get rid of prescription pills. there are a lot of drop off sites in the bay area. each location is open from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. to find a location nearest you go to ktvu.com and click on web links. tonight we have found one bay area city where if you hold your cell phone and talk while driving the chances are pretty good you're going to get caught.

the heavy machinery went to work about a week ago. drivers are being warned to avoid that area because harrison street will be closed due to that demolition. the epd end of the deal is is over for some drivers. the dmv is sending letters to 85,000 hybrid owners with the coveted yellow stickers. the letters warn drivers that they risk a ticket if they drive solo in a high occupancy vehicle lane. the legislation put an end to the perk but hybrid owners enjoyed the car pool benefit while it lasted. >> i knew when i was buying the hybrid they had that program so that was one of the reasons to buy it. >> the clean air deal is expected to come back next year with more stringent rules. the pge requested a
