can use that program by by calling the university police department and we can escort you on anywhere on the campus. >> campus police ask you to give you any information that may lead to an arrest in this assault and any other suspicious activity. san jose police are looking at massive layoffs because of the city's 115 million-dollar budget deficit. the city manager this week proposed a spending plan that reduces police, firefighters, park rangers along with hours for libraries and community service center and sterner is live on campus with a look of how this may trance late into public safety. >> police were kept busy with vandalism to store front and one report of a stabbing, but in the meantime more than 100 officers have been served pink slips at the end of april. that's not the worse case scenario. more than 200 officers could soon lose their job. >> 10th straight year of a

budget deficit with the people protecting us taking the brunt of the budget bullet. invaseing a 9% reduction in staff. san jose is one of the largest cities in the country and yet has one of the most understaffed police departments. this full briefing of officers could soon look like this. political science harry doesn't see any other option. >> last year laid off people in almost every other department last year, so the budget keeps getting worse and worse and now it's finally caught up to the police department as well. >> between retirement and employment freeze and these layoffs the number of officers will be lower than what it was in 1954. this city's population has nearly doubled since then, san jose police officer's association president george beatty says tried to meet the city halfway by agreeing to a 10% cut pay r the

coming year. but the mayor has told us that's not enough. >> you know, we gave you the 10%. we gave you that. you asked for buy out reform, we offered you that. i'm not sure what they want. >> the police officers association is worried about an individual officers. also concerned about how efficiently the tv will function after the loss of as many as 250 officers. while police officers are concerned about keeping their jobs just as city students are worried about getting a job. >> and it leaves me on the shorter end people with opportunities and -- >> residents are concerned that crime and violence will increase with the loss of officers. and -- there won't be as much police presence we do live in a downtown area. there are people who are walking around who aren't necessarily safe for our community, i do think that's a problem not having greater police force presence. >> already this year there have

the corner students try to stay awake longer to get in as much studying as possible. for many people this means cracking open a red bull or rock star in order to stay awake. but some people wonder if an energy drink is the best way to perk up. so san jose state often rely on energy drinks to stay alert throughout the day. >> usually i do drink my red bull in the morning because i'm italian. >> sometimes i'll drink a quick energy drink, you know, keep myself awake. >> however, researchers across the country worry that these drinks are not the healthiest option. the high caffeine content has been known to cause cardiovascular. >> dj carter says the instant energy he would get from drinking an energy drink is not worth the risk. >> it's not worth it because the crash -- well first of all the spike in energy has way too much for your body. >> instead carter chooses a

healthier and natural option to study more options and cram for exams. >> i have a long day ahead of me then i drink which i'm plan -- spike and crash energy drinks. >> nutritionist says diet high in fruits and vegetables is much more beneficial to your body than the temporary bursts that people receive from consume ago sugar roy drink. >> best thing is to eat a healthy diet, if you're tired and need to thety you want to stay awake, grab some fruit. >> so the accountant cameron takes the opposite approach of getting through the day consuming up to 6 coffees through the day. >> when i normally get to work and it's a really long day, after lunch i'll have another set of coffee. >> while drinking an energy drink may seem more convenient, informing in a blender and making yourself a smoothie is cheaper and healthier and sweeter option. >> dieting is tough and college students it's often hard to

find time to eat or exercise the right way. the nutrition and education action team is program helping improve among sjsu students. students came to be -- exercised habits. nutritionist jennifer says the way students can eat healthy without going hungry or depriving themselves of the nutrition they need. >> the one trick that we teach students to make sure that they have a balanced diet is to think about their plate so that they can really check the quality of their diets just by taking a look at what's on their plate and what we do is have them look for half of the plate as some kind of fruit or vegetable, hopefully a vegetable. >> this is the fourth year the student health department has featured respect your body week. >> what movie should i see this week. >> i'll tell you in just a bit. i've got some other good stuff right now.

an art fair and silent auction benefited the art program for the child development center. while participating in a raffle at the event. the center is located on 8th street just off campus. all of the art work that was on display was done by children at the center, pictures featured many different types of materials including beads, pop sickle sticks and tissue paper. >> so we hope to use our minidevice and similar for indoors and different mediums or art. >> david says the art there is a great opportunity for children to show off artistic talent. the radio television film and theater department is busy wrapping up its final production. the group left the audience laughing in a series of short skip presented in a play called all in the timing. the skip all shared the topic of time but takes our to

importance of family and -- this is nearly a traditional summer movie. it's big, over the top, loud and lacking at any substance at all. that ice why movies like this work. while that's amusing for some people, it wasn't for me. now african task, the story in the wild savannah follows the lives of three families, single mother who must fend for her five cubs. a young lion cub living with her pack strive together go up and fierce lion along with sons are determined to rule the kingdom. i absolutely adored this movie. anyone with a fondness for furry creatures should melt right in their seats. not only does the movie tug at my heart struck, but it had me captivated as it did brilliant close ups of gorgeous aerial shots of herds moving by the mas, it's keeping them

football game. the players warmed u up and were ready to compete against each other for the last time in summer training camp. the team was divided with first string offense and first string defense and second team defense wearing blue. the white squad took control of the game winning 21-7 with each of the three quarterbacks scoring as they shared the first string position throughout the four quarters. head coach mcintire was pleased with the team's performance. >> nobody hurt. we moved the ball a little bit. we got to work on the kicking game, so i felt like we got what we wanted out of it. >> the spartans will be competing against ucla, stanford and maybe in the fall to name a few. at the spring game i caught up with former sjsu and most recently super bowl champion about the nfl lockout why it's so important to come back an how he's been studying his --

spending his time this off- season. >> anything -- your football knowledge at green bay? >> oh, that's what gets me by, all the things i learned here from my coaches and my teammates. it definitely sticks with me. i use it on the football field first and foremost. it's helping me to be a great player. >> what are you planning to do this off-season, anything fun. >> eel probably take a couple vacations with the lockout, i've got a little bit more time. i'll be hanging out training, we've got to stay in shape. we can't take too much time off. >> do you have any thoughts about it? >> no, not really. you know, i'm glad we get to rest our bodies up a little bit longer. hopefully we'll get a deal done. it's out of our control. something will happen to them. >> how important is it for you to come back to san jose state. >> whenever i get a chance to come back, i try to come back to team practice coach the

receivers and help out a little bit. i want to see just as bad, i wanted them to see when i was here. anything i can do to come back and help them, you know, i try to do it. >> he is a free agent and it is unknown if he will be return together the green bay packers to play next season. sha niece howard became the first sjsu athlete to win the female junior sports scholar of the year. to be nominated a student must be an ethnic minority, maintain a 3.2gpa and be active in the community or campus. the award is named after the african-american, erin caught up with the lady -- >> my first question for you is how did you actually get nominated if r this award. >> my coach nominated a few of the girls for the team, yeah, through the coaches. >> abdomen what did you do when you first found out that you got this award? >> i was -- it was kind of like a secret they would tell me ahead of time before they printed in the magazines they

wanted to print it. and i was really surprised because i hadn't heard anything since he nominated me i didn't know it was going to come out. blue. i thought of so many people across the country and i was honored to get it. >> school is hard enough in addition to your competitions an packs, how did you maintain a 3.99gpa. >> oh my gosh, i'm kind of an organizational freak. i organize everything and i like to plan ahead my school work especially when we're traveling on the road, it's kind of hard. i find stuff that i can bring with me on the road that i can do in the hotels rooms and stuff, it's just staying on top of things. >> what advice would you give to student who excel both in the comp -- >> i think focus on your school work and once you got that down getting all your stuff done and you have to know how to separate those. when you're in the gym you're thinking about your sport. when you're out thinking about your school work and getting it all done.
