san francisco firefighters battle to control flames late today in a mission historic district dotted with historic phones. good evening i'm julie haener. >> and i'm frank somerville. it's a neighborhood filled with

older homes many that survived the 2006 quake. jana katsuyama brought us live coverage on the news at 5:00 and 6:00 and she joins us now with what is going on are. >> reporter: we're going on six hours since the fire started and firefighters are still here. they've been clearing out the debris from inside this huge pile all came from the house right here. we understand that it's the building, the victorian in the middle where it actually started. all people got out about 10 minutes ago, the red cross said they've counted 20 people who lived in the building and crews managed to also save that historic home over on the corner which was built back in the 1880s. the winds fanned the flames and smoke pureed out of this building at 506 cap. the fire spread to other buildings. >> we saw the build just start to smoke up. >> reporter: crews got the call

about 5:15 this afternoon. >> when crews arrived there was heavy fire in the building. >> reporter: the fire spread to the top floor next door and then to a three level house behind it. firefighters sounded a three alarm calling for support as people gathered in the corner to watch. andre ramos came home just minutes after the fire started, relieved to see his father, and bird safe and sound. >> i went in and opened the door and i was calling for my dog. >> reporter: when the smoke cleared, firefighters started evaluating the damage. >> it did survive the fires that came up from the 1906 quake. >> reporter: the owner grateful

tonight that fire crews managed to save it. >> there's no damage, none whatsoever. it's a miracle. it's a miracle. >> reporter: the red cross has parked a van where they are trying to help the victims of the fire. right now no word on what caused it. jana katsuyama, ktvu news. and ktvu.com has the live video of the fire captured by chopper 2. and the city's emergency management department told ktvu that 911 calls were not affected. officials say crews are trained for this type of outage and the system is taken down occasionally for maintenance. repairs were completed at about 3:00 this afternoon. dropping news out of martinez where we have a late report of a train hitting a

vehicle. it happened less than an hour ago at 9:12 tonight where the trains cross ferry street. martinez police tell us a freight train hit a pickup truck and that the truck overturned. firefighters freed the driver just a few minutes ago. they put him on a helicopter to take him to the hospital. our crew just arrived on the scene right now they are gathering information and we will have a live report from them coming up in just a few minutes. oakland police are trying to find witnesss to a shooting that took place about 4:15 this afternoon. people reported hearing gunshots on 76 avenue at hamilton street. police responded and found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. paramedics took him to highland hospital in very critical condition. so far no word on his name or victims. one was shot in the ankle and the other in the foot.

both hen were taken to highland hospital. police are interviewing witnesses on the scene. no other details were immediately available. hundreds of oakland residents took to the street in a rally to keep the city safe. the march included many families with children. they walked along international boulevard and several other streets in the san antonio district. police chief anthony bats organized the march and marched along with the residents. ktvu lloyd lacuesta is live in san jose now on the changes being felt and the response. >> requesting that the council

declare this emergency so that we can take action. >> reporter: the mayor says the city has a $115 million deficit this year and there will be continuing deficits every year because of skyrocketing retirement cost. currently $250 million a year. the mayor proposes capping retirement benefits at 9%. raising retirement age to 60 for police and fire and 65 for all other employees. requiring 20 years of service for retiree health care. limiting pension acrural rates to 1% a year. >> people who have already retired, we're going to keep paying them. but people who are still working, we need to stretch out the retirement age. >> i think it's pretty irresponsible. i think there's some scare tactics that are being used

here. declaring a fiscal state of emergency is an extreme thing to do. >> reporter: labor leaders feel city workers are being used as scapegoats. and bargaining should be done at the bargain table and not called in a conference. the city council is scheduled to work on the emergency declaration in about two weeks. the mayor says he wants pension reform put on the ballot by this november. live in san jose, lloyd lacuesta, ktvu news. the two students shot and killed in a parking lot will be awarded their degrees. the two were fatally shot by napoleon calligeron who then took his life. today san jose officials

reported the two will receive their degrees. the man accused of trying to open a door on a flight will remain in jail. almarisi told an air marshal he wanted to kill himself. members of his family attended today's hearing, they say he is not a terrorist. today a judge ordered the 19-year-old to napa state hospital. the teen suffers from schizophrenia. if doctors ever believe he is

sane he will serve his sentence in jail. as ktvu's paul chambers reports, it's another cost cutting move to reduce the deficit. >> reporter: the view from san rafael is beautiful, but now that the state needs to close 70 of its 278 parks this summer will be the last time people here will be able to enjoy it. >> it would be a great loss to our community here. it's a beautiful place to come and be. >> we can't continue to manage our system as we have before with the budget that we have. it's just the reality. >> reporter: in march, the governor's slashed the state parks budget by $11 million for this fiscal year. and $22 million for next year. today officials named the parks that will begin closing in september and be completely closed by july of next year. these green squares show which parts will close in our area. in the statement released by the governor it says closing

state parks is not a task that gives anyone joy. but we are experiences turbulent times and we need cuts to services. but people say it's time that accordings paid up so the -- that corporations paid up so the parks can remain open. >> a lot of corporate taxes, a lot of industry in san francisco. >> we need to tax everybody in order to maintain things that are valuable to us like this park is. >> reporter: as a result of the park closure, there'll be 200 jobs cut, but the state hopes to eliminate lay offs but reassigning employees from closed parks to open ones. paul which chambers, ktvu news. the state tell us it looked at each park, and whether the

back now to the developing news we're following in martinez where a train hit a pickup and crews have now freed one driver. eric rasmussen is on the scene, what can you tell us. >> reporter: i just finished talking to a batallion chief who says the accidented happened on the other side. we know when a train hit a pickup it flipped over. firefighters were called out here a little after 9:00. they say they had to use the jaws of life to cut a 64-year- old man out of that truck and they air lifted him by helicopter to a hospital. amazingly they say this man did not receive life threatening injuries. you can see a large crowd has gathered out here. some of them waiting for other trains coming through.

we can also tell you, police just informed me about 70 people on the other side of the train, you might be able to see their heads just over the top there, there apparently was a bochy tournament and they are struck trying to get by. somehow this large freight train clipped a pickup and flipped it over. the man is said to have injuries but these are not expected to be life threatening injuries. we're going to stay on the scene and gather more information. we will bring it to you as soon as we get it. eric rasmussen. the start time is earlier than ever for the 100th running of beta breakers. the race make over hasn't curved enthusiasm. >> thank you. >> reporter: beta breakers will have a new look but it always sparks excitement. >> i'm just happy to be taking

appeared to be in his late teens or early 20s. temple police found the body this morning. residents reported hearing gunshots a few nights before. santa clara police identified a man today who was found dead yesterday morning. 63-year-old l uis tavara. tavara was known to many in the neighborhood as the church man. a public memorial service honored san carlos mayor ahmad. hundreds of people turned out for the service at hiller aviation museum. the 63-year-old mayor died of a

heart attack. ahmad was the second muslim in the united states to become a city mayor before he entered politics he was an executive in silican valley. president obama is expected to make major address next thursday about all of the inrest in the middle east and the killing of osama bin laden. rita williams tells us about a surprising find in osama bin laden's bedroom and how his death has led to deadly violence in pakistan. >> reporter: this is to avenge the killing of osama bin laden. says a spokesman for the pakistani taliban. two bombers blew themselves up in a military training center in northwest pakistan killing at least 80 recruits. it was the deadliest terror strike there since navy seals killed osama bin laden. the group said pakistan should have stopped the u.s. raid. the house today commended all those who took part in the

teachers ended their week long rally at the state capital late today saying they won't let students left behind. the teachers want state lawmakers to allow a vote on the extension of temporary taxes. all week they've been trying to get their message across to them without the taxes, teachers say $4 billion in education funding might be cut. an estimated 1,500 teachers also rallied outside san francisco city hall today. rob roth was there as teachers wrapped up their week of protest. teachers, students and

parents packed the big center plaza this afternoon. they came to send one more message to state lawmakers, don't cut education. >> it feels like we're going toward this path of not having public education. where will we end up if we keep cutting education. >> reporter: no public school has been spared by proposed cuts. san francisco alone is planning a lay out, teachers, administrators and aids next year. we spoke to a teacher who received a lay off notice. >> devastating for me. and also for what i imagine is going to happen to my students next year. they are not going to see me in the hall way. they're not going to have that continuity of teachers from one year to the next. >> reporter: but those teachers who still have jobs are worried about their students. >> it means less resources. sometimes running out of the the basics. >> reporter: like paper. >> yeah, like sometimes paper

back now to that developing news from martinez where a

fright train hit a pickup truck. erratic rasmussen is on the scene with us. >> reporter: i'm hearing they are getting ready to move this train. just minutes ago talked to martinez police. they say a pickup truck was sitting right here on the tracks when this freight train hit it. they think it was going 20 miles per hour. the train was, and look how far the train traveled after hitting the pickup truck. had to travel maybe some 200 yards and we just got some video from the other side of the train we would like to show you now. where that pickup truck was flipped upside down. police say they came to the scene along with fire departments, just about 10, 11 minutes after 9:00 they had to use the jaws of life they say to cut a 64-year-old man out of that pickup truck. amazingly they say his worse injury was to his leg. they flew him out of here by helicopter to a hospital in abundance of caution there to make sure he would be okay. but his injuries are not life threatening. police also tell me there were

at least four witnesses to this crash. that could be critical because they want to know exactly how the pickup truck got on to the tracks here. there are some crossing arms that they say were down as this train was coming through. but again, at some point it hit this pickup truck, flipping it back over. back out here live i can tell you also that union pacific is inspecting these tracks right now. you see a vehicle on the tracks coming back toward us as we speak. they want to make sure everything is okay. make sure the train is okay before they can get it moving on its way. we're right here at the train station in martinez. it's delayed amtrak service but they hope to have it repaired soon. caltrans plans to close a portion of highway 101 in san jose coming up in the next hour or so. it's parking lot of the tally road interchange project -- it's part of the tally road interchange project. the closure is expected to last

from 11:30 tonight until 50:00 5:00 tomorrow evening. and in libya, they have released a message from gadhafi saying that he is a live. only gadhafi's voice was heard. in mexico, police paraded the suspected leader of a major drug cartel before cameras. martin beltran is believed to have taken over the sinaloa cartel after his leader was killed yesterday. that cartel moves drugs from south america to the united states. four others were also arrested including the two women in charge of his security. and on the west bank, pelestinians clashed with israeli security forces today. this marks the 25th anniversary

big changes to the eastern span of the bay bridge are coming in a few weeks. ktvu's mike mibach got a behind the scenes tour to show us how it will affect drivers. >> reporter: the new eastern span, the signature tower. >> i think it's an amazing engineering feat. >> reporter: the pieces are

falling into place. >> terribly, terribly, terribly cool. >> reporter: cool but not quite complete. in order to get there -- >> what we're doing is we're going to be shifting traffic coming off the bay bridge in oakland and coming to the south. >> reporter: the trucks are here and the paving is going on. this is an up close look at the new interstate 80 set to open in just a couple of weeks. >> whenever you make a change to the bay bridge alignment because it's been here for almost eight decades, you've got to be very careful about it. >> reporter: here's what the drive looked like today coming off the bridge. now we go to the simulation of the detour. you can see it's not too different just a small veer to the right. then we take you 80 east as it looks today, 80 east by the end of the month. once the detour is running, the old lanes will be removed and the new temporary westbound lanes will be constructed. this allows crews to complete the oakland touchdown of the eastern span. >> this is a reason why we're able to open the bridge in

2013. that gives us enough room in between the existing bridge and the new bridge to complete the structure. >> reporter: the transition to the detour will happen in the middle of the night memorial day weekend. caltrans says the bridge will not need to be closed to do the job. in oakland, mike mibach, ktvu channel 2 news. roger mcdowell returned to work today with an apology. >> these past two weeks, have been very humbling. >> reporter: mcdowe, l ll was suspended after making anti gay slurs. the pitching coach says he's personally apologized to the family and has also taken some sensitivity training. bryan stow medical team
