. complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is the 10:00 news on ktvu, channel 2 news. >> some say it's a new low for a bay area scrap metal thieves. someone took off with an artifact from one of our nation's most historic naval events. good evening, i'm ken wayne. hello again, everyone, i'm heather holmes. a piece of u.s. history in oakland is targeted by thieves. they made off with a massive brass gun poor from the batship uss maine which had been on display at lakeside park for

decades. only on 2 eric rasmussen live in oakland with the clues left behind. eric? >> reporter: it certainly took some heavy lifting. this big porthole or gun port was right here on this concrete slab. you can see where they knocked it right off. we were even able to make out some tire tracks where the thieves drove right up here to get it. and they apparently got away without being seen by anyone. this solid brass gun port had been a centerpiece of lakeside park in oakland for generations, a monument to history and the uss maine which sunk after an explosion in cuba in 1898. >> so you can see the shape like that. >> reporter: now it's gone. >> it's about as tall as i am. it's about this wide. >> reporter: park supervisor says these wooden planks are among the only evidence of how the thieves made off the huge relic. city workers discovered the porthole had been knocked off of its concrete stand days earlier but didn't think it was about to be stolen. >> we had called the

maintenance. and they came out. and it was so heavy we couldn't move it. >> these are different kinds of pirates. these are pirates that steal history, destroy history and pocket the money and leave in the night. >> reporter: oakland naturalist stephanie thinks the thieves might be looking to scrap the monument for cash. >> we're hoping that the people who own recycling centers and mill foundries will recognize that this is our piece. i mean, come to you with a g big brass porthole. >> reporter: some estimate it could be worth thousands. she invests this piece of spanish american war history is priceless. >> it was a community piece and a piece that needs to be put back. >> now, that was eric rasmussen reporting for us tonight. the park managers say that they had actually planned to move the monument across the park to the veteran's building. but now, well, they just hope that it can be recovered. if you look outside you know a cold and wet storm is rolling into the bay area tonight spoiling some of the

outdoor weekend plans for those who were hoping for some warm weather this weekend. ktvu's john sasaki is live in downtown san francisco to give us a taste of what we're in for for the next couple of days. john? >> reporter: kenny, we've been talking about it for days now. and it just started here in downtown a couple of minutes ago. there is a light rainfalling here. you can see market street right there. now, in about nine hours tens of thousands of people will be hitting the pavement in the centennial bay to breakers, but this year the weather will be less than ideal. a cold storm bearing down on the bay area is bringing gusting winds, rain and even lightning and hail. >> great for bay to breakers tomorrow. [ laughter ] >> reporter: but before the clouds moved in it was a beautiful afternoon in san francisco. >> we were fortunate enough to enjoy the sunshine. so we have just to take one day at a time. >> it is supposed to be 55 and raining today. but out in the sun for the last two hours and a nice time. >> reporter: and then picturesque shots gave way to

storm clouds for runners tomorrow morning. >> $perfect and sunny. tomorrow it will be rainy and windy, miserable. >> reporter: near pier 39 a group of spraypaint artists impress the crowd with their work. when the weather turns cold and dreary as it will be over the next few days they get concerned about losing customers. >> you got bigger audiences, you know, when it is sunny and warm? >> yes. oh, yes. we can't wait until summer comes. >> reporter: for these ice cream eating visitors it makes no difference that summer has yet to alive. >> there is not really logic behind it. >> reporter: are you cold? >> no, actually, not really. >> reporter: while the bay to breakers may see some shower activity every participant we met said the weather would not slow down them. live in san francisco, i'm john sasaki, ktvu, channel 2 news. [ music ] a light rain has been increasing in coverage over the passed one to two hours across parts of the bay area. take a look at live stormtracker 2. this looks like

an image from maybe two months ago. the coverage is increasing. not all of this reaching the ground. but i stepped outside the station a few minutes ago in oakland. a few light showers and sprinkles. john was talking about a few showers moving into san francisco. nothing too major here but we are expecting the rainfall to pick up overnight. the wider perspective you can see those before this timeer colors showing up towards santa cruz. more of a moderate to heavy rainfall pushing into this region in the santa cruz mountains. the wider perspective you can see the rainfall picking up all associated with a cold storm. coming up in our full forecast highlight the thunderstorm chances across the bay area into the overnight hours and also how low the snow levels will be falling across the local hills. also the bay to breakers forecast coming up in a little bit. >> in less than nine hours thousands of people will brave the weather and take over the streets of san francisco for the 100th running of the bay to breakers. but this year there are some big changes scheduled. as ktvu reports, some are

wondering if that's going to spoil the fun. record in the streets of san francisco, the preparations were underway for the throngs of people expected tomorrow. port-a-poties check, barricades, check. costumes? >> we never dress up. but i figured for the 100th year i would make the effort. >> reporter: liz was one of the thousands of people picking up their race numbers today. >> i have number 16890. >> reporter: while there are serious runners authorities say in recent years drinking has gotten out of control. ben lives near the square where many people passed outlast year. >> just pandemonium. people, you know, urinating in the park and on the streets and trying to break into people's houses. >> reporter: this year event organizers say no alcohol or floats are allowed. and only those registered are participate. a record number of police officers and security will be keeping a watchful eye. >> there will be check points in place to make sure that if you are caught with alcohol the alcohol will either be confiscated or you may be

arrested. >> reporter: some say people will still smuggle alcohol in. >> camel packs or bottles that look like other things. it is all in good fun. >> reporter: new this year a group of 50 residents will act as ambassadors helping participants and watching for dangerous situations. >> we are definitely optimistic. we worked a long time on it. we really think that this year will be a change. >> reporter: the race begins at 7 a.m. tomorrow an hour earlier compared to last year because of the record number of people participating. they expect the last stragglers to finish by noon. reporting from san francisco, ktvu, channel 2 news. you can find a map of the course and a list of street closures for the race by going to ktvu.com and clicking on the weekend extra tab. amgen tour of california officials are deciding right now whether or not to postpone tomorrow's opening day of the eight day bike race. the plan calls for bicyclists to race from south lake tahoe to north star at tahoe resort on the north shore. but up to two inches of snow

and strong wind gusts are predicted for tomorrow. options being considered include eliminating the north star finish, delaying the start for a few hours or just canceling the first stage all together. the fans in tahoe today remain optimistic. >> it's going to go and watch it. we don't think it is going to snow. so we are praying and hoping it will be good weather. >> the stage two schedule calls for a 133-mile ride from squaw valley to sacramento. authorities are keeping tight lipped about a body found today in a hotel room. they were on the scene at the motel 6 on lawrence drive this afternoon. a maid found the body of an adult male in the room. the man was a guest in the hotel. police are not saying whether they are investigating this death, though, as a homicide. tonight the police have identified the man shot to death yesterday near the springfield mesonic temple. staff members found that body

of eric osby at 11 a.m. in the bushes of the temple's parking lot. he was from fairfield and had suffered gunshot wounds. it is unclear though tonight how long the body had been on the temple ground and if the shooting occurred at that location. an 83-year-old man died this morning after his car plunged down a steep ravine. it happened at 11:25 this morning along highway 1. the highway patrol says the elderly man was the only person inside the pt cruiser down at the bottom of the ravine there. the helicopter was called in because of the area's rough terrain. the tow truck driver had to slow make his way down to hook a chain to the car to pull it up the side. both the north and the southbound lanes were blocked for two hours today. the victim died at the scene and his name has not been released. oakland mayor jean kwan spoke with voters today about the parcel tax she is pubbing in an effort to deal with the p.m. multimillion dollars budget shortfall. the 0 he can observing residents gathered for her second to last promised town

hall. the mayor acknowledged that voters are concerned about having to pay a proposed five- year $80 parcel tax. but she says it's necessary with the city facing a $58 million deficit. >> without the parcel tax we will be laying off another 300 people and closing the librairies and firehouses. and i don't think people want to do that. >> the oakland city council has not backed kwan's plan to hold a mail only ballot for the proposed parcel tax. the parcel tax would bring in an estimated $11 million a year for the fund. >> the army corp of engineers opened an emergency flood gate today in louisiana for the first time in nearly four decades. we watch now as water from the mississippi river rushes through the flood gate like a waterfall. the idea is to spare heavily pop lat -- populated areas like new orleans and baton rouge and funnel it to small communities and farms. today the residents in those towns packed up in preparation

for the flooding. >> it's a tragedy that's going to happen here for us. i am sure it will affect us with more water. the engineers know we are just doing what we can to save our little piece of heaven. >> the nearby communities have been evacuated with 15,000- acres of farmland estimated to be underwater initially. it is expected to take about three days for the water to reach the gulf of mexico. an arrest and accusation of sexual assault tonight are bound to cause a fire storm in french politics. today the head of the international monetary fund seen here in file video was removed from the plane at new york's kennedy airport and then arrested. dominic strauss cannes is accused of sexually attacking a made in new york today. he was supposed to become the socialist candidate for the french presidency. he is no stranger to scandal. just three years ago he publicly apologized for an affair he had with a subordinate at the ims. no quick decision on the

release of the death pictures of osama bin laden. the associated press reports that it received a letter saying that the defense department saw no reason to grant a speedy review of a freedom of information act request for graphic photos of osama bin laden's corpse. the defense department said the ap had not provided an urgent or compelling need for those pictures. president obama decided last week not to release the photos, saying they may inflame ant anti-american sentiment. police are looking for a man who is using the identity of a 74-year-old man who was killed in his mission district. this man was caught by an atm camera trying to access joseph william's bank account. joseph williams is an african american with a thin build between 50 and 60-year-old. this is pictures of the suspect, by the way. he was seen driving a gold badge sedan. they want to question him about the homicide of joseph williams

. san francisco police are investigating a triple shooting south that has left one man dead, one seriously wounded and another with minor injuries. they have detained several people for questioning but have made no arrests so far. the gunfire was on appleton avenue near holly park this afternoon. thousands of cal grads and their families celebrated their big day today in berkeley. as mike mibach reports, there is more reason to feel good about entering the job market this year. [ applause ] >> reporter: edward stadium, cal berkeley, 2400 graduates, 15,000 friends and family, this is uc berkeley's 2011 commencement. >> it's surreal because you're happy to -- you are happy to graduate but at the same time there are a lot of memories that you have here. >> reporter: his graduating class worked into a dire labor

market with a massive crater right in the middle of it. some economists say they haven't seen this big of a crater since the late 1940s and a couple of these grads know about it. >> i don't have a job. i asked my mom to make me a button that says don't ask me about my employment. >> sorry i asked that. >> reporter: despite the grim national numbers regarding unemployment, the tide appears to be turning for some college grads. >> a lot of girls started really early looking for jobs and started interviewing really early. a lot of girls have jobs lined up. >> i am going to new york in a month to work for jp morgan. >> reporter: according to the national association of employers companies will hire 98.3% more graduates compared to last spring. industries in the mix finance, insurance, real estate and computer electronics manufacturing. >> our oldest is graduating berkeley so a very cool day. >> it is very emotional for me today. >> reporter: just two of thousands of proud parents here

to see ub -- uc berkeley's graduating class of 2011. stories of success are hopefully waiting to be written. mike mibach, ktvu, channel 2 news. for one of those grads walking across the stage today, it was a giant step in his life. 22-year-old austin whitney is pair raised from the waist down. but today, well, he walked to the podium to receive his diploma. it was made possible because of a computerized body device called an exxoskeleton developed by students at the uc berkeley mechanical engineering lab. whitney's parents say their son never gave up after the paralyzing car crash three years ago. >> he has inspired us and made us better parents and given us the strength that we never knew we had. >> whitney graduated today with a double degree in history and political science. he says he plans to attend law school but will take the next year to help promote the exoskeleton device.

a napa state mental hospital patient has been charged with attempted murder. prosecutors say 31-year-old victor mod ujano brutally beat a patient wednesday night. this is just one in a series of attacks on hospital patients and staff that ktvu has been following. we spoke this week with nurses at the hospital who tell us security improvements have been made but that more needs to be done to control violent patients. >> napa police denied investigating a homemade bomb left inside a mailbox. the device today was found in the 3900 block of stover street. the resident called after hearing a large explosion. no injuries but the mailbox was damaged. the investigators say the device was a large water bottle filled with aluminium foil and draino. these are becoming a growing problem. the city officials released a status quo budget for the

next fiscal year that shows the trouble city may exit bankruptcy as soon as july. they are still negotiating with the creditors and they are optimistic about completing the bankruptcy process this summer. at that point they can begin rebuilding their credit. they filed for bankruptcy in may of 2008. the executor for a man who died from his injuries from the sanbruno pipeline explosion is new suing pg&e. 58-year-old james franko was in his home when that pipeline ruptured. the flames from the inferno scorched his lungs and led to organ failure 18 days later. the man who represents frank owe's estate has filed a civil suit claiming that poor pipeline construction led to a "inevitable explosion." he is seeking un specified damages because any settlement would go to his 10-year-old niece and to charity. the families of all eight people killed in that blast have sued pg&e. well, bart officials are thinking about extending

service on friday night. the idea would cater to the late night party crowd. but as ktvu's allie rasmus reports it would come at a price for other riders. >> reporter: the trains and stations may seem empty. but about 3900 people ride bart between 6 and 7 a.m. on saturday morning. today bart officials wanted to hear from them. bart's board of directors are considering a plan to end train service later on saturdays around 1 a.m. instead of midnight. >> a lot of people go out on a friday night so it is good for partying and stuff. >> it would take a lot of drunk drivers off the road. >> reporter: but trains would also start an hour later the next morning at 7:00 instead of 6:00. >> that's the problem. i would probably have to try to get on a bus, cab, you know. because the way gas is nowadays, it's too expensive. >> we are a public transportation system. and we are trying to do the greatest good for the most number of people.

>> reporter: the questionnaires are supposed to help bart figure out who and how many people the change would affect. >> i have to take the bart to work. so if it did, you know, start at a later time that would be bad so for me. >> reporter: bart's directors would vote on the late night service extension depending in part on the survey results. >> if i have people that would be losing jobs, it could be five or ten, it could be one then that would be a deal breaker for me. >> reporter: surveyors would be out with these questionnaires for next saturday. they could make a decision whether or not to move forward with that late night service by the end of this month. in oakland allie rasmus, ktvu, channel 2 news. the last night tornado in alabama sent personal items flying and many ended up miles away. it has become one woman's mission to re-connect those with their rightful owners. patty and her family have been collecting belongings that landed in their yard in lester, alabama. they include stuffed animals, pictures and even a wedding

dress. she posted them on a facebook page secreted. they help their owners claim them. >> within four hours i had 1,000 people on it. within 12 hours i had 12,000 people on it. the response has been amazing. >> so far 4,000 pictures have been posted on the facebook page and 1,000 have been returned to their owners. >> the sony playstation network is up and running again tonight almost a month after millions of user's personal information was stolen by hackers. sony says it has beefed up security and promises to protect user's information. play station network users will have to upload new software to gain access to the system. credit card and other information was stolen from 77 million playstation accounts on april 19th. that's when the attack on the system was discovered. well, the mediterranean comes to the bay area where you can find a slice of the greek culture this weekend. >> all systems go.

airstrike. but at the funeral today conflicting reports on the identity of the dead. one mourner said the group was going to brega the de facto rebel capitol at the request of the government. they were trying to demonstrate that it was still in government hands. in all 11 people were killed. if in fact that were correct and their deaths were caused by nato strike it would be the largest since the operation began in libya. some are getting help from a custodyer who evacuated wounded men today. despite a u.n. mandated u.n. fly zone nato gave them special permission to enter libyan airspace. in other world of the news tonight, four people were killed by syrian snipers today as they tried to cross the border into neighbouring lebanon. this is a picture of them

surrounding border cities and firing their weapons. 800 people have been killed since the uprising there began in march. >> in lorca, spain thousands continue to live in the open air days after a magnitude 5.2 earthquake brought down buildings killing nine people. an eighth of the buildings in that town were heavily damaged and are now unsafe to live in. many of the buildings were built in the 16th and 17th centuries. and in haiti the new president delivered his inaugural addressed to in front of the ruins of the national palace destroyed in last year's massive earthquake. president michelle martily called on his people to set aside their divisions and lift the country from rebels. he is a former haitian pop star who won that in a landslide. >> the shuttle endeavor is scheduled to launch at 5:56 a.m. pacific daylight time. the launch has been delayed by more than a week because of an

electrical malfunction. congresswoman gabrielle giffords will fly to florida to see her husband mark kelly lead the mission to the international space station. >> a nasa satellite that monitors the sun caught this impact of a comet hitting the sun this week. you can see it down in the lower right side of the screen where the comet hits the sun. it is followed by a bright explosion in the upper right- side of the screen. this all matches up. there it is the big explosion. the comet strike and the giantsolar flare are not related says gnash at that. the flare was millions of times more powerful than the impact of that comet. well, a local hero comes home. he made it big on "american idol." see the reception james durbin received when he returned to

. he didn't make it to the top three. but in santa cruz, "american idol" contestant james durbin is number one. [ applause ] >> he was diagnosed as a child with tourettes and asberger's and spent sometime signing autographs and offering encouragement. most if not all of these fans are upset he didn't make it to the final three but glad he is

finally home. that was in doubt until the producers of "american idol" made an exception in his case so he could be with his son and girlfriend. >> i am just thrilled to pieces that they have allowed him to come home and mostly to be with his family. >> the fans may not have to wait long until they hear more from the santa cruz singer. >> actually, potentially heard my very first single. i'm really, really, really excited about it. just really excited to get this band together and do it. >> later a parade took him to the santa cruz beach boardwalk where durbin took the stage to sing a song he said offers encouragement to anyone. america, even as we increase safety and environmental standards. >> towards that aim the president is directing the department of the interior to increase the drilling in alaska's national petroleum reserve, speed up the evaluation of oil and gas resources in the mid and south lick and extend leases in the gulf of mexico areas affected by last year's temporary moratorium after the bp oil spill. >> in his comments mr. obama said that u.s. oil production last year was at its highest level since 2003. the u.s. last year produced 5.5 million barrels of oil per day. according to the government data the u.s. uses more than 18.5 million-barrels a day. the united states consumes almost 25 percent of the daily crude oil output. however, the u.s. has only two percent of the u.s. proven reserves of crude. the fda has proved a drug to treat hepatitis c. in spite of clean needle programs and other efforts more than three million americans have

hepatitis c. the trials show it cures more than 65% of patients when combined with two other drugs. the current treatment cures only about 40% of patients. and it can cause serious side effects. another new treatment is also expected to be approved later this month. the national forest service will re-open 98,000-acres of land burned in the biggest fire in la history. the station fire shown in these pictures killed two firefighters, destroyed 89 homes and burned 161,000-acres in 2009. after three years of restoration efforts, camp grounds, picnic areas and hiking trails on three sides of the national forest will be opened up on monday. santa clara county is getting extra help this upcoming fire season. cal fire is adding six engines to its fleet starting monday. despite increased rainfall in the bay area this winter, temperatures of course will rise as summer arrives. this will dry out the grass which is prime fuel for

wildfires. fire officials are asking people to clear their properties of vegetation in preparation for summer. stamping out hunger. why it was more than just mail post office workers were collecting today. we are entering a very unsettled weather pattern. a live picture of

[ music ] well, we started talking about this storm about a week ago. and this is moving in right on time. some rain showers already pushing into the region. and some thunderstorms will soon be on the increase. at least a probability. right now on the maps on live stormtracker 2 flipping back the calendar a couple of months ago. you can see all of the

coverage. the yellows and reds are moving into the region here. they are focusing closer to the santa cruz mountains and also parts of the south bay so some heavier rainfall. at last check the san jose airport reporting some moderate rainfall but yellows and reds around mountain view. move the maps up to the north and light showers right around san francisco and oakland. at last check some light rain reported for those two locations and also right around hayward as well. take a look at the very important forecast for tomorrow. bay to breakers at 7:00 some spotty showers first thing tomorrow morning for the bayside start in downtown san francisco. you can see as we do have a move across the city right in golden gate park ending up in ocean beach for the clouds and sun. still hold on to the chance of a shower. temperatures on the cold side bay area wide. but especially for san francisco. those readings only in the low to mid-50s. here is a look at the

impressive storm system offshore. right now a frontal band is pushing onshore. but this is the guy out in the pacific. the speckled nature of the clouds out there that reflects the cold unstable air. so for the rest of the night rainfall increase. we do bring in a fairly good chance of thunderstorms. those thunderstorms could be waking you up early sunday morning. the front moves through. here we go with that cold air mass moving in. as a result most areas in the 50s for tomorrow. and occasional showers and not rainfall. but some sunshine out there and some clouds and also a passing shower with the possibility of a thunderstorm. winter storm warning in place. the west slopes of the sierra. we could be talking about snowfall around 4-8 inches maybe closer to 2-3 inches for lake tahoe itself. snow levels coming down to 3,000 feet. here in the bay area we could have snow levels coming down to 3,500. so a bit of a dusting. the rainfall forecast model not widespread rainfall but spotty showers out there tomorrow morning at 10:00. we will hold on to that chance

into the early portion of the afternoon. not a lot of activity by 5:00 and 6:00. by 10:00 tomorrow night maybe an isolated sprinkle. for tomorrow break it down. showers likely 48 to 53 degrees. by 12:00 a chance of a shower. partly cloudy skies. for the afternoon hours. still a chance of a shower at those temperatures. only in the 50s. lucky to make it to 60 degrees in morgan hill and gillroy. here is a look ahead at your five day forecast. a chance of a shower, a light shower on monday. in fact, there is a fairly good bet. heather and ken we could be looking at more raindrops on tuesday. if you want to feel like spring you might be happy for wednesday with the wednesday and thursday forecast. but tomorrow just bundle up out there. back to winter. >> a lot of wet runners tomorrow morning. lots of exciting stories. >> all right. thanks, mark. well, postal workers throughout the bay area teamed up today with the residents and the volunteers to stamp out hunger. this was the scene at the san francisco food bank. it was the u.s. postal service's annual stamp out

hunger day. that's the single largest food drive for the san francisco food bank. letter carriers collected nonperishable food left by mailboxes and then dropped it off at the local food banks and pantries. and then the volunteers, well, they wentto work sorting all of those donations. >> the sharks right now are circling in the water in vancouver resting up for tomorrow's big game. one matchup with the canucks. also, the giants will
