. complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is ktvu, channel 2 news at 10:00. get ready for some changes this memorial day weekend. if you plan on driving across the bay bridge. good evening, i'm ken wayne. >> and hello again, everyone, i'm heather holmes. we are watching traffic on illustrate -- on the bay bridge where construction is about to begin. crews are ready to shift eastbound traffic approaching oakland on to a new detour. that's where eric rasmussen is now live and, eric, there will

be delays tonight? >> reporter: there certainly will be heather. i just talked to our contact here at the bay bridge about four minutes ago. crews are actually delayed. might not start for another hour or so because of all of the rain we had earlier today. we would like to switch our truck to a second camera we have to give you a sort of bird' eye view of the eastbound traffic. if you see us blowing around the camera is blowing around there. however, we can tell you they will be shutting down some lanes overnight tonight to shift this traffic on to the new detour. and that's, of course, to make room for the crews that are working on a new part of the bay bridge. shifting traffic on the bay bridge is no easy task, not even late on a saturday night. >> these are the first two lanes we will close in the middle of the night. we will remove the barrier on this end and that night -- end and put traffic on these two lanes. >> reporter: construction crews have finished a quarter mile path for cars coming off eastbound into oakland. but making a transition to the detour means closing 2-3 lanes

at a time and caltrans isn't minuting words for people planning to make the trip between midnight and the a.m. >> there will be delays tonight because of this work so expect them. >> reporter: i am standing right in the middle of what will be that new detour. those cars will still have the same 50 miles per hour speed limit. officials think this slight curve to the south could actually make your commute easier, not like the introduction of an s curve a year and a half when un prepared drivers experienced new wrecks earnings the fatal roll-over of a semi-truck. the drivers this time got the message. >> i just heard it was going to be pretty bad and closing down some lanes. >> reporter: the goal to have traffic flowing by full speed before the end of the long weekend. >> it will take 5-6 hours tonight if all goes according to plan. >> we will give you one more live look atop the bridge on the bay bridge coming here to oakland. this new alignment should be in place for two years, but

caltrans says doing it this way could have them finishing the new bay bridge six months ahead of schedule in 2013. live here eric rasmussen, ktvu, channel 2 news. you can experience those changes eric just mentioned before you hop on the bay bridge. virtually drive the detour bug, downloading the free iphone and iphone app called bay bridge explorer. it is a 3d rendered version of the bridge that allows you to test that new route -- drive that new route. bart is taking advantage of the light traffic on memorial day weekend to do what it needs. some much needed repairs inside the transbay tube. crews will be doing maintenance and repair work to electrical cables. work is causing bart delays because just one tube is open during the delays. the cables caused some major problems in december. and they chose this weekend to do the repairs because there are fewer riders than usual. >> there are 15,000 customers a day affected by this.

but if we don't do it and those cables were to fail in the trans bay 2, the ones that we are trying to replace, then during the week 170,000 people go through there. that's a heck of a lot more closer for people who will be very unhappy. >> work starts after the last train tonight and it is scheduled to end tomorrow around 2:30 in the afternoon. work is scheduled to continue again the last train on sunday through to 2:30 on monday. memorial day may be unofficial start of summer but the bay area got a wet start to the holiday weekend. he i want to show you the scene this afternoon in emeryville. windshield wipers were needed for everyone who went outside or on the roadway. we turn to mark tamayo for today's rain totals. what's going on out there, mark, supposed to be summertime. >> that's right, ken a bit of a soaking here. it felt like a february storm. the latest on live stormtracker 2 the rain showers heading out to the east. heavy snow out toward the sierra. right now the local radar not

showing much, in fact, a few showers to the south of morgan hill. as far as the rain totals take a look at those over the passed 24 hours. in fact, pick up most of the rain between 5:00 and 7:00 this evening. you can see mill valley 0.32. look at san francisco just over a quarter of an inch at 0.28. san jose at 0.03. here is the latest on the satellite radar. that is the system responsible for the clouds and the cooler temperatures and the heavier rain we had earlier today. it is moving out to the east. with that we have a change in the weather pattern tomorrow. coming up let you know which way temperatures are heading to are your sunday. and the one area that could have winds gusting to over 30 miles per hour. two people are being treated at a hospital tonight after their suv went down an embankment in the north bay. the accident happened at around 4:30 this afternoon in petaluma. a woman in that suv had to be pulled 40 feet up the slope in a rescue basket. a man was able to walk out with

the help of rescuers. they tell ktvu news there have been two other crashes in that same spot just in the last three months. take a look at this now, this is what i-80 at soda springs looks like this evening. as you can see, snow is blanket is gone the area between 3-6 inches fell today in the sierra. get this, a winter weather advisory is still in effect there. chains are required on i-80 and highway 50. coming up a little bit later at 10:00 a report from the sierra about this weekend's snow and the current conditions. police tonight are trying to find who is responsible for fatally stabbing a san jose teenager who had just graduated high school a couple of days ago. the attack happened early this morning in east san jose. ktvu's janine joins us from the police department with the very latest on the investigation. >> reporter: ken, at this hour police are working to track down the killer. the detectives have been bringing potential witnesses into the station all day to try

to piece this together. the rain fell tonight and family and friends gathered to remember vincent tran lee. he just sell before this timed his 18th birthday and graduated from independence high school. >> this is definitely a real shock. and nobody really saw this coming. >> reporter: police arrived at an apartment complex near king road and sheltry drive and found tran lee suffering from stab wounds. they looked for clues as to what he was doing out so early in the morning and who was with him. >> i am pretty sure all of these people here are proof that he is a well-loved person, you know, he is caring. like he is not hated around here. i don't understand why a thing happened to such a good person. >> reporter: friends say he was raised by a single mother who was disabled. friends consoled her all night as she watched all of those to remember her son. his high school counsellor described him as a smart student. >> he sign you had up for college and financial aid and

on the track to hopefully help out his mom and bring him and his younger brother out of this neighborhood. >> reporter: less than 100 yards away from where tran lee was stabbed was a memorial for another young man in his 20s stabbed on wednesday. police are looking to see if they are connected or if gangs are involved. his friends say he wasn't in a gang. >> he is a good kid. like even at school everybody loved him. there was no beef with him. >> investigators are trying to come up with a motive. no are as have been made in this case. his friends are raising money for his mother who they say does not have enough for his burial. if you would like to help go to our website at ktvu, ktvu.com and click on web links for more information. reporting live this is ktvu, channel 2 news. the highway patrol report said as of this morning they had arrested 52 people for dui in the bay area as part of the maximum enforcement effort this memorial day weekend. more arrests were carried out by local police and sheriff's

departments. some at this dui checkpoint in nevado last night. two people were arrested there for dui. 16 others for driving with no licences or suspended licences. the maximum enforcement period runs throughout the state until monday evening. a patriotic tribute this memorial day weekend. ktvu's ken pritchett was in sanbruno as boyscouts remembered the fallen. >> reporter: on this windy saturday at golden gate national cemetery, every headstone, every grave marker has a flag. >> there you go, good job. >> reporter: this morning more than 2500 boyscouts placed flags at the 130,000 gravesites, veterans many who served in combat. >> i respect and honor them. and if i were they, i would do the same thing. >> reporter: and lending these young men a hand is a man who has seen many a memorial day go by. >> i have been here for 36 years. i started in 1975. >> reporter: he has spent more

than half of his life as a groundskeeper at this place of honor. he expends every day making sure the grounds are clean, that the grass is green. but the last weekend in may makes him especially proud and grateful at the site of every grave marked with the stars and the stripes. >> and this little boy, i am very proud of them. they come here every year and put every flag on every gravesite. and it makes me happy. >> reporter: the boyscouts who planted these american flags here for more than 50 memorial days. and next year they will have more flags to plant. pedro says they have services here almost every day. a casualty of afghanistan was buried here just last week. much more than a groundskeeper, he is a guide helping families find loved ones in the rows that seem to stretch forever. instead of relaxing, this is where he will spend his memorial day as he has for decades. >> it's more important helping the public and the veterans

that help us put america number one. >> in sanbruno, ktvu, channel 2 news. two small quakes shook the bay area today. the first was a 3.3 magnitude quake that struck a little after 3:30 this morning near morgan hill. and then this afternoon around 4 p.m. a 3.7 magnitude quake rolled through the north bay 25 miles of santa rosa. no reports of any damage or injuries from either of those quakes. the death told in missouri grew today making 2011 the deadliest here for tornadoes. 142 people are now confirmed dead with dozens more still unaccounted for. rescues crews and about 600 volunteers are working around the clock searching for survivors. the tornado that hit joplin last sunday was an ef-5 packing 200 miles per hour winds. more than 900 people were injured. more than 500 tornado related deaths this year from the upper midwest to the deep south.

president obama tomorrow plans to tour the damage in joplin. he is scheduled to speak at a community memorial service to remember those affected by the devastating tornado. the president returned today from a six-day european tour that included visits to four countries and a stop at the g8 summit. >> a fiery explosion at a chemical plant in north carolina has forced hundreds of people out of their homes tonight. the blast happened at the chemical coatings plant this afternoon in hudson which is about 75 miles from charlotte. the fire was out within two hours. but evacuations have been issued for those in a two-mile radius. the order will likely stay in place until tomorrow afternoon. it is unclear what caused the explosion. so far no injuries have been reported. >> well, the pilot of a delta plane that caught fire as it landed in atlanta is being credited tonight with keeping control and avoiding any serious injuries to passengers. the federal aviation administration says the plane either blew a tire or that its

brakes locked up upon arriving at hartsville, jackson, international airport this afternoon. the 43 passengers evacuated using emergency slides and stairs. and then they took a bus to the terminal. one of the passengers described the moments leading up to that fire. >> the pilot was able to control the plane and got it stopped. but then there was a burning smell. and in the right side of the plane then caught on fire. >> the smoke billowed from the plane as it came to a halt there on the runway. four people, though, suffered minor injuries. >> a major development today in the middle east. egypt re-opened the border with gaza ending the enforcement of a four year blockade. today about 400 gazans were able to make it into egypt. under new rules all women and children under the age of 18 will be allowed to enter as well as foreigners. however men between the ages of 18-40 will have to get an egyptian visa. >> i hope this is the beginning of a bright future for palestinians, he says, and for the peace process.

vendors selling new merchandise pushing independent designers looking for recognition. trish designs feather earrings. >> it is a flea market but also independent design. and it's got like that fashion, you know, the really nice stuff involved. but then you can get, hang out, squat down on the ground and find a book for 50 cents. the treasure island flea, now up and running the last weekend of each month. and based on the large crowd, the flea appears to be making a comeback. mike mibach, ktvu, channel 2 news. today was supposed to be graduation day for two san jose state honor students who were shot to death at the university earlier this month. the president of the university today awarded 25-year-old cindy and 26-year-old thomas kyle williams their accounting degrees posthumously. a university spokeswoman called the two some of san jose's best and brightest students. her husband shot and killed his wife and the other student in a campus parking garage back on

may 12th before turning the gun on himself. >> san jose state graduates today were sporting a new growner line of commencement wear. the cap and gowns worn by the students are made from recycled plastic bottles. the fabric is someone from molten plastic pellets. the manufacturer says each gown is made from the equivalent of 23 plastic bottles. a california teenager will graduate from high school in a few days but he has already earned a college degree. >> it was fun walking across the state before actually my high school graduation. >> spencer lefavre says he became bored with high school and decided at the age of 14 to start taking online courses at taft college where he has now earned an associate's social science degree. >> it doesn't take being a generous to accomplish this. it just takes hard work and determination. >> spencer will start at cal state bakersfield as a junior where he plans to study political science or business.

californians are reporting a little less stress than a year ago. but the distinction goes to hawaii where only 30% of residents say they experience daily stress. california comes in 24 place with 39% of us reporting significant stress. that's down 1% from 2009. the most stressed outstate is utah where 45% of people say they are stressed out. >> well, marin county has the most unemployment rate in the bay area and one of the lowest in the entire state. but don't let those numbers fool you. as allly rasmussen tells us there are people in need in the bay. >> some potato. roar record a helping of food and relief for this will marin county mother. >> i have an 8-year-old son and i am unemployed right now. at the end of the month i tend to hit the food banks because that's when i run out of money.

a lot of people i know are un employed right now. >> the san francisco food bank opened a new pantry at the fairfax community church earlier this month. they are open every saturday from 10-12. the church pastor said today more than 100 families showed up. >> it surprised me there is so much of a need. >> even in marin. >> 27% of the kids to attend the public schools here are actually on free and reduced lunch which is a good indicator of the need in the county. >> the san francisco food bank says the non-profit is considering opening three more food pantries in the next year, one in marin. >> and hopefully another one, maybe the strawberry or port madeira area. the food is not free it is actually healthy. 63% of the food they give out is press produce. >> this is really important. this is whale live on this week. >> she plans to turn her groceries into a soup. >> i never thought i would be in this position in my life. i had a good life.

and i raised a family. very owned three homes. i have lost my last house. it was foreclosed on. >> reporter: she says having access to food gives her one less thing to worry about. >> this is the big relief. and everybody is so kind about it. >> reporter: in fairfax, ktvu, channel 2 news. a san jose grocery that helped revive the downtown area will close at the end of next month after 15 years in business. they opened on 2nd street back in 1996 with a loan from the city's redevelopment fund. the owner announced yesterday that he could no longer afford to keep the downtown market open. although two other stores will remain in business. they may have been a victim of its own success in reviving that area. a safeway moved into the neighborhood two years ago making it difficult for the smaller grocery to compete. one researcher summed up new census numbers about marriage in the u.s. this way. we are no longer living in the

olden days. it represents 48% of household in 2010. down 2% from the last census in 2000. un married couples made up 12% of u.s. couples in 2010. >> the world's top suppliers of weapons falls victim to a cyber attack. how lockheed martin thinks they were able to gain access to their security system. >> how they have celebrated their cultures this weekend in san francisco. >> the co

. >> lockheed martin, the world's largest aerospace company was hit hard by hackers. it is not clear if any sensitive information was stolen from the top weapons manufacturer but the company is stepping up security measures.

the department of homeland security and the defense department have offered to help gauge the impact of the attack detected last saturday. lockheed martin believes they made duplicate electronic keys to gain access to its security system. in afghanistan, an attack at a gathering of high-ranking afghan and nato officials claimed the lives of six people and wounds a high-ranking nato commander. this is a still photo of that attack. a suicide bomber dressed as a policeman blew himself up at the capitol there. two afghan commanders and two german soldiers and two afghans were all killed. the attack comes just weeks before the draw it dawn of u.s. troops is set to begin. in other world of the news tonight in moscow russian police arrested 18 gay rights activists attempting to hold a gay right march. dan chow who fought for the end of the pentagon's don't ask, don't tell policy was among those arrested. 18 russian men were also

arrested as they tried to attack the gay activists. the mayor of moscow has banned any gay rights demonstrations calling them "satan inning." in bell grade, serbia there is word tonight that maladic may be extradited to a war crimes tribunal in the age last week. he is accused of ordering the mass murder of 8,000 muslim men and boys during the war in bosnia 16 years ago. he was arrested on thursday after 16 years on the run. and in tripoli nato carried out air strikes against libyan leader moammar gadhafi's main command and control compound. there have been reports that an army bare racks was destroyed and guard towers around the compound were toppled. the attacks come following president obama's vow at the g8 summit to finish the job. and they called for ouster of moammar gadhafi. the carnival celebration

yosemite. the falls is a force to be reckoned with right now as thousands of gallons of waterfall down the 2400-foot drop. it is just one of the many falls in the park. yes, they have all been forge -- gorgeous. we have spent the last few days in the park and it is gorgeous. >> the frigid water is now flowing at 1600 feet per second. well, that means it can carry away people or objects at more than 10 miles per hour. so they are warning all visitors to use extreme caution when hiking or travelling near streams or falls. well, if you are planning a trip there for the memorial day holiday you can expect to save a couple of cents. the gas prices continue their downward trend, dropping another penny yesterday. the new statewide average for a gallon of regular are.

if you are going outside for a hike or a jog this weekend, santa clara county emergency officials are warning you to watch your step. they are telling people to be on the lookout for rattlesnakes. the snakes typically hide under logs, rocks or in high brush. but if you do see a rattlesnake on the trail keep your distance and give that snake time to get away. they are generally afraid and just want to avoid you. if you happen to get bitten or your pet gets bitten call 911. please are advised to wear long pants and heavy boots and keep your dogs and pets on a leash when on the trail. >> firefighters say they are making great progress in containing a wildfire in kern county that forced hundreds of evacuations. the so-called fire is burning in the lake isabel will area just north of bakersfield. the fire was reported late yesterday. by the afternoon the homes were being evacuated. by late evening many of those people were allowed back to their homes. the fire is about 65% contained

now. 1100-acres have burned. no word yet on what started the fire. welfare recipients in alameda county won't lose their rent subsidies if a landlord fails to fill out the proper paperwork. a state appeals court ruled this week that a policy to eliminate the $191 subsidy because of a landlord's failure to act was unreasonable. general assistance recipients get $363 a month plus that rent subsidy. the county policy would have taken the rent subsidies out of welfare checks leaving each client with very little money to by food and other necessities. livermore residents will get a chance to vote on an extension of bart into their city. the alameda county registrar of voters has certified a ballot measure calling on bart to put new stations along i-580. the current plan calls for an underground station in downtown livermore and an above ground on vasco road.

the supporters say building an underground would be too disruptive. cloud cover obscured the endeavor's return. we want to show you the last scheduled walk of the 30 year space shuttle mission. according to nasa the shuttle and space mission should be over us tomorrow morning at 5:45. they are on a 16-day mission to deliver an al ams and spare parts to the space station. they are scheduled to land at the kennedy space station in florida early wednesday. [ music ] well, wrapping up the last weekend of may with this, some clouds, some cold rain showers pushing thru the bay area. and also some gusting winds. the showers are actually pretty light early this afternoon. but the rainfall really picked up by late this afternoon into the evening hours. the bulk of the action right now is moving out of town. here is the latest at least for right now. we do have clearing skies. with that we have some gusting winds. they continue to be a factor into monday and also part of your sunday. right now on the maps i can show you this on live stormtracker 2. there you can pick out the rain. just outside of the bay area. and also the significant snow out towards the sierra closer to south lake tahoe right around blue canyon. as we do come in closer to the bay area not a lot to show you a few lingers rain showers to the hills east of morgan hill

and also san jose. the overall weather story for tonight partly cloudy skies and gusting winds out there. tomorrow some morning clouds and the temperatures are warm willing -- warming up and the skies clearing up as well. for memorial day partly sunny skies and another dry forecast. first thing tomorrow the coolest locations for san francisco, napa, san francisco right around 50 degrees. and fremont is at 47. the satellite and the radar see all of the activity from today's system now moving out to the east. this is basically the overall weather pattern today where we had this cold area of low pressure almost looks like a february pattern. and so with that we have the clouds and the showers. this will be scooting out to the east. the high pressure returns. with the pressure difference that will generate some wind out of the northwest. the wind could be right around 30 miles per hour strongest coastside and also right around the bay. but for sunday and into monday, we will have some minor warming with the warmest locations approaching the lower 70s. it felt strange to make this map today. a winter weather advisory still

in place until 8:00 sunday morning for the west part of the sierra. snowfall easily a good 2-6 inches and snow levels down there about 4500 to 5,000 feet. here is our forecast model showing you a decrease in the clouds and the rain showers moving out. and then for the most part, partly cloudy skies. you take this into monday. keep an eye on high clouds moving into the region by late monday afternoon and a few sprinkles into tuesday. a storm scooting out to the east as the next wave of energy moves out too. watching that for late monday and into tuesday. so once again here is our cloud and rainfall forecast model just showing you a few clouds first thing tomorrow morning. here is the plan for your sunday forecast 7:00. patchy clouds out there. increasing sunday shine but increasing wind into the afternoon hours. temperatures from the upper 50s to the lower 70s. tomorrow temperatures warming up. san jose will go 68. half moon bay right around 60 and santa cruz 68 degrees. here is a look ahead. it looks like it will be a dry
