evening, debra. >> reporter: they're calling it a january graduation, the 117th commencement, history making in itself. graduation attire included cap and gown and umbrella. it launched 240 seniors. advised to dress warm but they're teenagers. >> once a dragon, always a dragon. >> reporter: but even the dragon couldn't -- on electronics and chairs. the band squeezed under tents, their teacher retiring tonight saying it's her first rainy night. >> we're going to make it work. >> oh, i had sun burns that have lasted until august from graduation before and this time i might have, you know, wet socks until august. >> from the announcers booth, a sea of umbrellas, drops falling as the speeches started. >> i had to get wet and papers

that injured firefighter in san francisco is still fighting for his life tonight. anthony is in critical condition. his partner was killed while they were both battling a house fire. san francisco general tells us more about the injuries and why they're keeping his medically paralyzed. >> frank, the family of the critically injured firefighters along with members of the fire department are here and keeping vigils praying for a miracle. an out pouring for support for family of firefighter anthony, firefighters arrived tonight carrying substances for his loved ones. >> reporter: relatives say there's been no change in the 53-year-old's condition. remains on life support and being treated for burns in 12% of his body. >> they're keeping him

medically paralyzed in order to help his breathing. if he moves a little bit, it will hurt his breathing. they're help relieving the pressure of his chest on his lungs so he can take in more oxygen. >> if they can get some good news, you're encouraged, then you get some bad news then you're discouraged. that's how it is being in intensive care unit being critically ill is like that. >> he lost his battle to survive after fighting the house fire alongside. the moving tribute to the fallen hero here at the hospital set the tone for what will be an emotional farewell next friday. funeral services will be held at saint mary's cathedral. >> there are 1700 devastated people. >> the family is asking for everyone's prayers. >> i'm trying to keep my head, you know -- i know my brother

video today at san francisco's city hall. and sacramento state capitol flag also flew at half staff. in a statement today the governor said he and his wife were saddened to hear the news and offered prayers for lieutenant perez and the injured firefighter anthony. >> tonight we have more of those fire dispatch tapes made during the frantic final moments. ktvu rod tells us they include some of the last works from the firefighter who was killed while december separately trying to put out the flames. >> nearby station 26 responded. a neighbor living above the house in diamond heights took these photographs. >> it was very quick, very quick after that. the house went up very quickly and as you can see from the photos. it was a lot of black smoke.

but found the men only after tripping over them. the fire department, the national institute of occupational safety and health and cal o osha are all investigating. >> as the investigation progresses stay with ktvu for continuing coverage on air and at ktvu.com we'll bring you the latest information as we get it. they announced today it has cleared sheriff's deputy in the fatal shooting of a man last year saying it was justified. the deputies were investigating a large scale marijuana operation in a rural part of the county last july. they said they opened fire on jose soto and he came at them with what looked like a real gun. it turned out to be a pellet gun. the da say the deputies acted in self defense. the district attorney also cleared three police officers of any wrongdoing in another fatal shooting last august. 42-year-old brian casey was

shot and killed in his apartment. the officers use of force was justified because casey threatened them with a knife and said he wanted the officers to kill him and casey had already shot himself. police officers are set to start voting on a tentative deal next monday that could save jobs. it caused for cutting salaries by 10% that means the jobs of 156 officers would be saved this year. the police officers association says changes to its pension plan will also save the city $100 million over 16 years. >> without a deal we were looking at having 270 officers laid off. with this deal we are now looking at 122 officers being laid off and it's all -- our hope that is we can minimize that with one time funding that the city could find. >> there is some question as to whether the 10% pay cut is for one year or longer. signs that the economic recovery is slowing were felt today on wall street.

the nasdaq dropped 40. this is the 5th straight losing week for the markets, the longest streak since 2008. labor department's latest job reports shows an up tick in unemployment. the rate for may went up to 9.1% from 9%. the number of people looking for jobs increased by 272,000, that's compared to 54,000 jobs added by employers, the fewest in eight months. president obama acknowledged the difficulty the economy is facing during the visit to a plant in toledo. >> this economy took a big hit. it's like, you know, if you had a bad illness, if you've got hit by a truck, it's going to take a while and that's what's happened to our economy. >> the president remarks came after he toured a jeep wrangler assembly line. he pointed out that the company is recovering because of that

government bailout in 2009. jeep is owned by chrysler. auto sales dipped last month in japanese disaster produced shape up. gm came in first, ford was second on the list. coming in no. 3 was chrysler. this is the first time the big 3 have been on top since 2005. it comes as japanese car companies have cut their production because of that earthquake and tsunami. i'm still tracking some light rain across barts of the -- parts of the bay area. coming up one part of the region that can pick up over 3 inches of rain over the next few days. a young woman said she was raped at gun point by a man who followed her off of her bus. i'm live in alameda with the critical details she gave to police. 7 days now

bob marly style hat and belt. the woman said his teeth were especially straight like he'd had braces. >> i hope somebody knows who he is. i really do. >> reporter: tonight ac transit confirm police have asked for surveillance for cameras. the victim says her attacker told her he went to skyline high school. ktvu channel 2 news. >> the attorney a-- he plans to file motion monday to get video from a hotel that he said could exonerate his client. he remains behind bars following a hear being officials today. that hearing was to determine whether he violated the terms of his parole when he was arrested for beating stow. they say he stayed at the hotel the day after the attack and the video will show ramirez with a full head of hair.

witness descriptions of stow's attack tore have them as being bald. also his 10-year-old told police her father was with her and not at dodgers stadium when stow was beaten on march 31st. >> my reaction she was upset when she saw it. she was like, mom, can i go talk to them and let them know my dad was not there he was with me sleeping all day. >> they say they're looking for a second attacker and a woman seen driving the car. it has been exactly one week now since she disappeared. tonight hundreds came out to support the search for her. they tells us the reward also went way up today. jenna. >> reporter: there was a lot of crying at the vigil tonight. this family is not giving up. they announced tonight that this reward, $20,000 reward has now gone up to $45,000.

after 7 days and no word of michelle lee. family and friends put on t- shirts showing michelle's photo and detailed description of the missing 26-year-old. >> basically what i wanted to do was spread the word everywhere and being a walking billboard asking everyone to help bring her home. as you can see here, a lot of people -- sorry -- a lot of people love michelle. >> reporter: hayward police came to support the father, brother and other family members . the nursing student was last seen at kaiser hospital. she was on break from a nursing rotation and stepped outside. surveillance show her white honda suv being driven out of the parking lot. it was found the next day a half mile away locked.

possessing a illegal drug. she was ordered to go into rehab. she's accused of taking small quantities of cocaine from the city's crime lab forced the lab to close and dismissal of hundreds of drug cases. john edwards pleaded not guilty today the felony charges of pleading campaign funds to hide his misstress and baby. after appearing in court edwards did acknowledge he has done wrong. he has taken responsibility. >> and i will regret for the rest of my life the pain and the harm that i've caused to others. but i did not break the law and i never -- >> edwards also said he did not think that he was breaking the law either. edwards is accused of using $925,000 in under the table contributions to cover up the fact that he had a misstress and that they had a child. that was during the 2008 campaign for the democratic

operations. officials hope the program will help participants understand emergency operations. >> a man accused of kidnapping a girl from virginia and taking her to the bay area is now charged the murdering the girl's mother. prosecutors say 33-year-old geoffrey could face the death penalty. investigators say last december he killed his girlfriend, tina smith at his home. they say easily kidnapped his 12-year-old daughter. police took easily into custody after he was spot with the the girl outside a san francisco grocery store. she say she fasted today as a show of support and her friend josh who are still being held in iran. in los angeles today she made several appearances trying to keep their story in the public eye. the trial is supposed to resume last month but for some unknown reason it was canceled. >> the whole world knows they meant no harm. they've committed no crime and

arrest. 19-year-old terrell was taken into custody last night following an extensive search. police say officers pulled him over near 66 for a vehicle violation. he then got out of the car, ran off and authorities say that's when he pointed a gun at them and they returned fire. he was not hit, police arrested him later and say they also found the shotgun. in yemen fired rockets as the presidential palace ground today. this is significant escalation in the battle to force the president from power. they say he would appear in public later but there was only audio message of him on national tv calling the trial fighters. in russia a fire at ammunition sent mushroom clouds into the sky today, about 100 of 150 buildings were destroyed. nearly 10,000-tons of artillery shells were destroyed. officials say two helderly --

african-american students. school officials are commending the custodians for going above and beyond their call of duty. >> they are actually looking at student achievement as well as ensuring that the buildings that these students are educating in are clean and emaculate are really special. >> the scholarships range from 2 to $1,500 and will be presented tomorrow at the ceremony. they say they plan to do it again next year. the high speed rail project is going through a leadership change in california. the state assembly voted today to place the 43 billion-dollar project under the current board will have an advisory role. when it is completed the link and anaheim at speeds of up to 220 miles an hour. more control of how it's regulated the measure goes to the state senate. the bill will let cities and

reporting some light rain and also some of the current rain fall patterns up in the north bay. i'll go ahead and shift and you'll notice some more activity. closed in on san francisco and making its way across the bay closer to the oakland area as well. this trend will continue with increasing rain fall rates late tonight into early saturday morning. we're expecting -- we will have some breaks during the afternoon, sunday is sun cloud mix and off and on showers likely. here is the overall weather set up. over night tonight here is the first band, gusty winds especially for the south neighborhoods could be around 20 to 25 miles an hour and then into the weekend, this area of low pressure it will be bumping up against the bay area coast and backing out offshore. as a result we'll have some dry brakes. the heaviest rain, chance of few, as we do head into sunday.

here is our forecast model showing you that heavy rain band first thing tomorrow morning at 7:00, 8:00. by 3:00 you'll notice the bulk of the action moving out to the east, this will be some high elevation snow, we have about 7,000, 8,000 feet. we have to hold on to possibility for showery here, we will have plenty of brakes out there and then into sunday, sunday morning basically some clouds we do put this into motion we could have a few pop- up showers at least that move into parts of the region and there is a possibility of an isolated thunderstorm for sunday and you'll notice we'll have to hold off that chance into monday morning at 10:00. chance of lingering shower primarily into monday morning. tomorrow the happiest rain into the afternoon hours. breaks and temperatures mainly in the upper 50s to upper 60s. san jose 66. santa cruise 62 degrees. here is a look ahead, 5-day forecast, into sunday, we'll
