trips but they do it for us. >> reporter: firefighters are arriving from all over the nation. a shared bond, shared danger. >> fire is fire, physics are physics. and you know things happen. things can go wrong. and it's sad. >> reporter: in the hour before tonight's vigil. the two fallen firefighters pass by their fire house one last time. riding in this procession their relatives and their fire families, every member of station 26. on the street they saw people pause, salute or place their hand on their heart. the mayor says the city will show its grief and gratitude as only they can. >> what i say a grand tribute to the firefighters. the family will see how much our city feels their sacrifice. >> reporter: the last time the

city lost any firefighter was a hotel fire. this time a house fire that seemed manageable but blew up on them. tonight the men were called the heros of diamond heights. debra villalon, kvtu. >> among those expected in tomorrow's funeral, jerry brown, newsom. the city's fire chief says all firefighters across the city will be able to attend the funeral service. >> we we have firefighters coming from all over. because if they want to come to the service i want to let them aallow them to. >> reporter: the department has never done this before on such a large scale.

ended this afternoon with guilty verdicts. jurors also found bey guilty of two other killings. mackey was found guilty of one other killing. john sasaki was at the courthouse for the conclusion of the trial. >> it's been a long journey, but justice has finally been done. >> i got goose bumps right now sitting in there even though i had a good feeling that justice would be served. chauncey would have wanted that. >> reporter: bailey was shot to death four years ago as he walked to work at the oakland post. the star witness in this case, the convicted trigger man broussard testified that bey ordered the hit and that mackey helped. >> it's sometimes unfortunate but you have to engage or play with the devil to get the dirt. >> reporter: by law, prosecutors had to corroborate broussard's testimony with other evidence. >> and there was in the form of the gps data, in the form of

baby bullet train hit a man this afternoon. train service was halted during ktvu news at 5:00 when we brought you breaking coverage. yesterday's fatality occurred near peninsula avenue. this is the ninth death on caltrans tracks. police are asking for help to track down a santa cruz bicyclists. today we learned the identity of the man killed. zachary park was killed near the uc santa cruz campus. investigators are looking for a burgundy nissan or infinity with damage to the front end. park loved rock climbing and had recently opened his own business selling rock climbing supplies. and the family and friends of michelle le held a vigil tonight. the family is still holding out

hope that she may be alive, jana. >> frank, tonight at mountain eden park they were handing out these new posters. although police had said earlier this week that this was a homicide investigation, it's clear that michelle le's family and friends are doing everything they can to bring her home alive. >> i'm in crisis and need a supporting hand. >> reporter: more than 100 people brought their friends and support and a poster with michelle le's photo was surrounded by love of a family still hoping to find her alive. >> we're still staying optimistic that you're out there and we're going to finds you and we're going to bring you home. >> reporter: hayward police announced monday that they are treating the case as a homicide. the le family met today for an update. and brown told police we found blood evidence at the scene where we believe there was a confrontation at kaiser.

the nursing student was last seen at 7:00 p.m. at kaiser hospital in hayward. her locked white honda suv was found later. >> we did have a chaplain come in today and talked with us. we prayed for the family and prayed for michelle. >> reporter: but with no body, no suspects in custody -- >> i hope we can find michelle alive. that's what we all want. please come home, we all miss you. that's all. >> reporter: the family has set up a website and we have a link to it at ktvu.com police tell me that they expect forensic analysis results sometime next week. the reward has been increased to $55,000. the family says they plan to have a fire distribution drive

more than 200 students celebrated a bittersweet moment in vallejo tonight. they are the last class to graduate from hogan high school. eric rasmussen is live there with what next. >> reporter: the last students to walk through these gates will be middle schoolers. it's all part of a reorganization in vallejo. today's graduation was titled, remember the spartans, even more meaningful. this is the last year they will be graduate in the blue and white. >> it's a bittersweet moment that you have to live with life, you have to move on. >> reporter: 213 students of the class of 2011 walked on this night knowing they are the

we'll be monitoring mehserle's release both on air and online. a family is suing the police department for an incident that occurred on halloween. tensions escalated and police moved in using their batons. three people were arrested but all charges were later dropped after the district attorney looked at the video tape. the police department says it is still investigating. justice for guy. friends and family of guy terrell jr. marched in vallejo to bring attention of what they believe was the wrongful death at the hands of police. family members say jerell was helping students shoot a video at the time when he was killed. the da is still investigating

a massive tire fire is under control tonight in camden, new jersey. the fire broke out at 3:30 this afternoon at a tire factory. the smoke could be seen 5 miles away in philadelphia. it burned fiercely until it was brought under control. a fire is burning in north eastern arizona and is moving toward the new mexico border. this was the scene today at

apache county. 525 square miles have burned, thousands are being forced to evacuate. the homeless are being paid to clean up their encampment. city leaders say this project helps solve two problems. >> reporter: with a babbling creek and palm trees up front, this looks like a beautiful refuge in the bay. this is where kenney lives. he is one of 500 people living in encampments on coyote creek. during the last few year, 180- tons of trash were pulled from the creek. >> i'm willing, able. you get to a point where it's

a feature that can identify a person by their picture isn't sitting well with some of the facebook's users. lloyd lacuesta is in san somewhere jose and tells us the impact goes beyond folks friends. >> reporter: users can manually name a person in a photo and tag them. now using facial recognition software one just scrolls over a face and if that person is in the facebook data bank and more than 700 million people are, the person is named. >> i think there's an aspect of invasion of one's privacy if you've not declared your right to actually be identified in a picture, so it's something that i'm not as comfortable with. >> i mean you go into it knowing that things you put out there are going to be out in the open. so it doesn't concern me too much. >> reporter: facebook says that it announced this picture last year and did it to help people add tags to facebook. tag suggestions are only made to people when they add new

two students are murdered in a parking garage at san jose state but students safety alerts don't go out for hours. now a month later the university says it's making some changes. ktvu's maureen naylor has details on a story you will see only on 2. >> there's been a shooting in the north garage. >> reporter: tomorrow makes one month since the university sent

out that message. >> i got the news at about 10:30. a friend of mine was 11:30. another friend was 2:00 a.m. a campus alert went out 30 minutes after. many criticized the kwraouft for sending out the first message 45 minutes after the shooting happened. one in every five people registered never received the message because they had a nonworking number. another problem police were sending the alert from their phones. >> it's very hard to really effectively use the alert system from a smart phone. >> reporter: so the university purchased a laptop for police. another goal is outreach on campus. 70% of students are registered yet only 40% of faculty. >> one of my friends who's a professor here she was teaching class and she was done at 8:45. she was in her office and she did not know until the morning. >> i think that's great. it's definitely good that they're listening to what students have to say and

improving it to make the campus safer. >> reporter: the university is encouraging students to sign up for voice alerts saying text messages can take longer. concord police this morning cleared out a homeless encampment near a lowe's center. customers had been complaining about homeless people bothering them. the city and outreach organizations warned the residents that encampment would be cleared. city crews spent the day removing brush and trimming trees. muni and the union met with a mediator. the arbitrator's decision on the new contract is expected by next tuesday. no decision yet on the fate of menlo park so called granny tree. san francisco public utilities

commission is still deciding what to do. we've been following the plythe of the 300-year-old tree. they are still looking at all options. a third day of a scorching heat wave in the eastern third of the country made life miserable for millions of the people. high temperatures set records today. many were in the triple digits. at least seven deaths have been reported. a cold front is bringing cooler temperatures to the northeast along with thunderstorms that caused widespread power outages. it's been three months since the tsunami rolled through the harbor. it cost more than $25 million in damage. the mercury news reports that there aren't enough facilities

in monterey bay to handle all the repairs. a repair company has a waiting list of 90 boats. a bay area microclimate resurfaced today with cold conditions coast side with us and the stubborn fog patches. the fog has been on the increase. coast side and already a few patches headed into the bay for san francisco, oakland and also right around the hayward area. as we deploy our buoys. we still have the on shore wind, the key factor with that that will help transform some of the fog as we head into the overnight hours. cooling off a bit and the weekend no rain clouds to worry about this weekend but temperatures will be cooling off especially as we do head into saturday. here's a look at the over all weather system moving in from the north. this will not bring us any clouds, an on shore breeze and

marine layer. a cooling trend, temperatures most areas in the 60s and 70s. warmest temperatures will be approaching the 80s. and next two to three weeks, could mean flooding. even for the yosemite valley. potential flooding on the merced river. this could have an impact on some of the campgrounds, the camp sites in yosemite valley. this could be extended into next week. we'll be watching this day-to- day and over the next few weeks. first thing tomorrow morning, coast side also right around the bay fog. even a few patches up in the sonoma county for santa rosa. as we put this into motion, the clouds pulling back in near the shoreline but still some left
