some merchants are already taking precautions downtown. live with deborah villalon. >> reporter: her on broadway, heather. on youth radio here oscar grant is remembered. but notice his image is plastered on plywood, put up for protection. when officer grant was shot and mehserle was charged protests erupted. >> what do we want? justice. when do we want it? >> now. are. >> reporter: later when mehserle got a ten month sentence protests again. >> we are not sure how this will play out. >> reporter: these merchants say they will be here whatever happens and that oscar grant's uncle said he will help watch their stores if needed. >> they never anticipated this and they never wanted this. we all want justice. but it is what it is. >> past protests have led to vandalism and burglary, cars set on fire and mounting damage. the city has sent out a notice

warning the neighborhood. >> we will be okay. >> reporter: do you plan to do anything differently? no. >> reporter: but some businesses are boarding up. at this t mobile store it was a precaution by the owners. perhaps by posters advertising the march. >> i am very concerned. >> reporter: the owner after beauty store looted last year is trying to keep a low profile. she has spent $10,000 on newspaper windows. >> i am hoping this will be peaceful. >> reporter: do you feel like the anger is even strong officer. >> yes, because he killed somebody and he only did a year. >> reporter: the demonstrations begin at 3 p.m. at the fruitvale bart station where the shooting occurred and then proceed to 14th and broadway at 5:30 p.m. now, an estimated 100 oakland police officers are expected to be on hand. live in oakland, deborah villalon, ktvu, channel 2 news.

bart officials are also preparing for tomorrow's planned protests. in a statement on its website bart says. we will publish timely service size ores as advice ors as often as necessary. you will find more on the mehserle case by going to ktvu.com and scrolling down to the right now section. we've posted a map for tomorrow's march. tonight arson investigators are scrambling to figure out who is responsible for a string of fires in antioch. the latest burned dangerously close to homes this afternoon. ktvu's eric rasmussen is there live and found out this isn't the first close call for some neighbors. >> reporter: it sure isn't. you know, they put up this metal chain-link fence this year after the wooden one burned down last year. we are actually standing in one man's backyard. he ran out here just as the

flames were bearing down on him again today. firefighters got the call for the second day in a row. someone set another fire in this park between york sure in antioch. >> would you like to -- we would sure like to catch the person doing this. >> reporter: it's the third suspicious fire this week. >> when we came out here all of this was ablaze. >> reporter: william king showed us how the fire went up to his backyard. >> it reached my next door neighbor's shed and it was on fire. >> reporter: you really thought this thing could come up to your house? >> yeah. >> reporter: in fact, we had to stop this interview while king threw buckets of water on a lingering hot spot. this isn't his first close call and he's convinced it's no accident. >> there is no doubt. last year i saw somebody run and then the fire started. >> reporter: and this time contra costa city firefighters say they don't have any solid leads and they share the homeowner's frustrations. >> with the cutbacks and the

way that we are spread out now devoting units like this and taken away from other vital services is pretty frustrating. >> reporter: despite the dangers king worries the fire responsible isn't finished. >> i have seen how far fire can go and it goes really fast so i hope nobody gets hurt. >> reporter: we are told a fire investigator will be back sometime soon to find out exactly how and where these fires started. of course they say if anything knows anything about this they should call the fire or police. live in antioch tonight, eric rasmussen, ktvu, channel 2 news. more doubt tonight over possible evidence in the beating of giants fan bryan stow. la t.v. station knbc reported earlier this week new evidence, a bloodstained dodgers jersey was linked to the beating. the report said the jersey contained bryan stow's dna, but not the dna of the jailed suspect ramirez. but the la times reports it

says the blood remains to neither stone nor ramirez. he was beat-last march. the lapd has not confirmed either report. mark class is joining the effort tomorrow to find nursing student michelle lee. the lee family is set to hold a mass flyer distribution at 2:00 tomorrow afternoon at the kmart on mission boulevard in hayward which class plans to attend. they have declared the case a homicide. the lee family is searching for her until they see evidence that she's no longer alive. mark class's daughter poly was kidnapped from their home and murdered back in 1993. >> there is word tonight that the bay area teacher known for his doomsday predictions is hospitalized. the oakland tribune reports 89- year-old harold camping suffered a stroke thursday night at his alameda home. it happened after his show on the family radio network. camping received widespread attention for his most recent prediction that the world would end on may 21st.

when that didn't happen, he moved the date to october 21st. a neighbor reportedly says camping's speech has been affected. searching for clues in a shoot-out today in broad daylight on a busy street. it happened at 4:40 this afternoon in the 800 block of broadway. investigators say a 19-year-old man is shot and is hospitalized in critical condition. there is no word of a motive or arrests in the case. anyone with information is asked to contact authorities. three men and three women from fairfield are being held tonight in the kidnapping, torture and murder of a fairfield man. keith eric jr. was found dead in the massonic temple parking lot on may 13th. he was shot execution-style. the police arrested the six suspects yesterday. investigators have yet to reveal a motive for the killing. renewed violence is

threatening san jose's representation as one of the safest cities in america. there was another homicide overnight. hector garcia was shot in front of a home. allie rasmussen talked to the investigators about this latest homicide. >> reporter: people broke woke up to find crime tape and police cars blocking the street. >> i was surprised because we went for a walk and, okay, we see a lot of police officers. what's going on? >> reporter: investigators searched for clues to find out why a man in his 20s was shot dead in the street at 2:30 this morning. it was a disturbing scene for this resident who has lived here for eight years. >> honestly i have never, ever seen this. we didn't hear anything. >> reporter: others neighbors did. this man didn't want to be identified but explained what he heard. (speaking spanish). >> reporter: he told me he could hear tires screeching and people running and yelling and then heard three shots. police don't know what led up to the shooting and there are still questions about where the

victim had come from before he was shot in the street. >> we know where we found him in the street but we don't know if he was associated to a house where he was buy -- by or associated to another house or any of these houses here on the street. >> reporter: police interviewed more than a dozen people who had been at a small party on one of the houses on this block. they are considered potential witnesses. police don't know if there is a connection between the party and the homicide but say the people they interviewed were awake when this shooting happened. >> there were at least 12 people that i saw them talking to people who heard something. >> reporter: which could help officers find out who was behind the shooting. ktvu, channel 2 news. >> more details now on san jose's rising homicide rate. last year san jose had 20 homicides for this year. we are halfway through the year and the number is already 24. two people were killed at san jose campus but since the san

jose police dealt with that crime the san francisco police do not add that into their total. officials say a 40-year-old man caused this backup along the bay bridge today after he climbed out on to a ledge at around 2:35 and threatened to jump. crews managed to talk him down around 4:30, but traffic didn't let up until after 6:00. >> more pressure tonight for new york congressman anthony weiner. even members of his own party are calling him to resign after an online scandal involving several women. still weiner says he will not step down. caroline has more. >> reporter: the democratic leadership decided if congressman anthony weiner didn't resign by saturday morning that they will try to push him out. weiner will not budge. he will request a short leave of absence from the house of representatives while he can "get evaluated and map out a course of treatment to make himself well." he admitted to sending explicit

e-mails and graphic photos to half a dozen women over the passed three years. leaders waited all week for weiner to step down. but on saturday a senior member of the democratic committee tells fox "the dye is cast. he needs to move on." they have asked for an ethics investigation to see if he used. nancy pilosi asked him to seek help "without the pressure of being a member of congress." in washington, caroline shiveley fox news. >> the white house is calling the death of the alleged master minds of the twin embassy bombings in frequent a huge setback for al qaeda.

somali officials confirmed that mohamed was killed in a shootout wednesday at a checkpoint. he was the fbi's most wanted man in africa and had a $5 million bounty on his head. the u.s. intelligence officials say mohamed was critical and crucial in persuading militants to pledge loyalty to al qaeda. intelligence officials say mohamed conceived of the 1998 u.s. embassy bombings in kenya and tanzania. in all 224 people were killed in those attacks and that includes 12 americans. they were the first al qaeda planned attacks on american targets. . the race for mayor of san francisco is gaining momentum with more than 200 candidates are seeking the job. today john sasaki talked to six of the front runners. >> reporter: state senator leland yee thanked supporters this morning. >> it is really important at this point in time in san francisco that you have someone that understands what is really important for the city.

former housing all over the city. >> i am somebody who ran the city's complaint department for five years. i was a city supervisor for eight years. i do think we can fix the big picture by taking care of the basics. >> he had lee -- ed lee has decided not to run but he has two months to change his mind. >> the auto chief assistant city attorney barbara parker took over the post this morning. she was appointed to the position left vacant by outgoing city attorney john russo. parker graduated from harvard law school in 1975. and before spending 20 years in the city attorney's office, she spent five years as assistant u.s. attorney for the northern district of california. state legislators have until wednesday to meet the constitutional deadline to send a balanced budget to the governor. democrats and republicans are $9 billion away from doing that. the state senate passed a few minor budget bills today but

did not address the so-called bridge tax. governor brown wants to keep the states's finances afloat until the fall. assembly's next session is on monday. they will punish lawmakers for missing the deadline. they will muse salary and per diem each day they fail to reach a deal. and the state controller will not pay them retroactively when a budget is approved. the great highway between lincoln and sloan is now shut down for sand abatement. the cleanup is required every so often when the winds blow sand on to the pavement. no word on how long the closure will last but officials say a detour is available. today marks the 40th anniversary of the end of the occupation of alcatraz island. native american activists took over the island in 1969 and it became the centerpiece of the

indian rights movement. at its height the occupation drew 800 people to the former federal prison. that number gradually dwindled. and on june 11, 1971 federal officers evicted the remaining 15 protestors. it is now a national park that draws more than one million visitor as year. that massive wildfire in arizona has now spread beyond that state's line. casey stegall is with firefighters as they try to gain ground. >> reporter: the monstrous wildfire in eastern arizona continues to grow. flames spreading into neighbouring new mexico after being fanned by strong winds and low humidity. >> we expect the winds to be testing a lot of the lines that are out there. the winds, the weather, that will be the issues that we face. >> reporter: the wall low fire which started almost two weeks ago has now scorched more than 430,000-acres, destroying more than 30 homes and forcing nearly 10,000 people to flee. >> when you walk through a

house you've lived in for 32 years and your children have carved their initials in the wall, you know, you just don't know. you know, there is just a moment of panic. >> reporter: more than 4,000 firefighters from all over the country are battling the flames. but there are new concerns over a potentially serious health threat adds -- as thick smoke is spreading far and wide. >> we couldn't see anything for the smoke. it just settled right into the valley over the top. and it came to us first. and you literally could not see, you know, ten feet ahead of you. >> reporter: meantime firefighters are battling another major wildfire in southern arizona near the new mexico border as well. the so-called horseshoe ii fire has burned about 135,000-acres since it started in early may. it's now about 45% contained, but officials say they have not determined the cause of either. here in eastern arizona two major power lines are still in jeopardy.

recent years especially as it demanded measures for countries it helped bail out of financial crisis. in world of the news tonight, at least 34 people are dead after two explosions ripped through a market in the pakistani city of peshawar. police say the first blast was small but as rescue workers and journalists arrived at the scene there was a second blast. the majority of the people were killed in that second blast. the attacks has risen sharply since osama bin laden was killed in a u.s. commando raid last month. >> gunfire in syria. this is amateur video that reportedly shows syrian troops firing in a suburb yesterday. the troops and helicopters are also firing on a town near the turkish border. the attack follows the death of 120 people there. many residents say the dead were troops trying to defect

who were killed by soldiers loyal to the government of president alasad. and in afghanistan, a series of attacks across the country claimed the lives of at least 2 is people within 24 hours. the largest of those attacks was a roadside bombing in the kandahar province which killed 15 people, including eight children and four women. the united nations say may was the deadliest month for civilians in afghanistan since 2007 when they started tracking u.s. casualties attributed to the war. they were responsible for some 80% of the 368 civilian deaths. anti-nuclear protestors demonstrated across japan today on the three-month anniversary of that devastated earthquake and tsunami that damaged the power plant. demonstrators clogged the streets in tokyo. marchers called for the remaining nuclear power plants to be shut down. recent government reports said

the radiation leakage is worse than previously thought. for some of the nuclear fuel in the three reactors likely having melted through the main cores and inner containment vessels. . some u.s. airways flights into and out of the bay area were cancelled today following a computer glitch at the airline's headquarters in phoenix. mark martinez reports from phoenix. >> u.s. airways passengers waiting in long lines at sky harbor airport after a problem with the airline's computer

system nationwide. passengers found lines up to an hour long while airline it workers tried to fix the glitch. these men flying to san diego knew something was up when they saw the lines at the ticket counter. >> noticed a little bit longer lines than we expected. fortunately we did get here early but it did take us longer to get through and a lot of the self check-in kiosks were being rebooted as we waited in line. >> a spokesperson for the airline described the problem saying early reports indicate that the system's outage was a result of the power outage of the data center in phoenix. most passengers seemed to take this all in stride. but there were a few delays and even some grounded flights as a result of the outage. >> this is my first experience flying with u.s. airways but the staff was very friendly and helpful but a little bit of a long line. >> the system seems to be operating normally right now but it paid to leave plenty of time to check in for a flight. >> one u.s. airways flight from

sfo to las vegas and to medford, oregon were cancelled as was a flight to oakland in san francisco. the transportation security administration has fired 36 airport luggage screeners and their bosses in hawaii. investigators say the employees at honolulu international airport allegedly failed to screen thousands of checked bags for explosive. there are reports the screeners did not have an automated bomb screening system and felt pressured to move the bags along. the local tsa director, a former honolulu police chief, is among those being dismissed. two f-15 fighter jets intercepted a small plane flying near camp david where the first family is staying for the weekend. that plane had no radio communication as it flew 11 miles from the presidential retreat in maryland. it was, though, escorted to a nearby city and landed without incident. police in spain arrested three suspected computer

hackers linked to recent attacks on sony's playstation network and others. spanish national police said they seized a server from one of the suspects, used not only in that sony attack, but in attacks on spanish banks and governments, including egypt, iran, chile and new zealand. the men are part of an international network of hackers called anonymous. >> monday marks the unofficial start to the gop presidential race as hopefuls are expected to take the stage for a debate in new hampshire. crews have been working to get the room ready at salem college. mitt romney and tim polenty, herman cane and sarah palin. >> there is word today that recuperating arizona congresswoman gabrielle giffords is expected to move out of a houston rehabilitation facility at the end of the month. an aid for gabrielle giffords says it has not been decided

where gabrielle giffords will stay and how she will participate in outpatient sessions. gabrielle giffords still struggles to communicate but aids say she has made substantial progress since she was shot. she was shot in the head during a rampage at a political event where six people died. >> the mississippi river is easing its below in baton rouge today. part of a levee re-opened to the public for the first time in nearly a month. it was covered with sandbags as they watched that river continue to rise. downriver the u.s. army corp of engineers began closing the gates at a spillway and had been diverting water from the mississippi to protect new orleans. well, a pregnant woman is in critical condition tonight after a drive-by shooting in modesto. officials responded to reports of shots fired just after 11:00 last night and found the 18- year-old injured in her car. two others in that vehicle were not hurt. authorities say they have no

suspect description tonight, but that those people involved left in a dark colored newer model car with chrome wheels. a protest is scheduled for tomorrow following the death of a man in the water off of alameda's crown beach. on may 30th, firefighters stood on the shore as raymond zack entered the water apparently to kill himself. after about an hour, a swimmer went out and pulled zack in. zack was pronounced dead at the hospital. the firefighters said policy kept them from helping zack. tomorrow morning a group of alameda residents say they will wade back into the water where zack died. they say the demonstration will show how easy it would have been for crews to reach him. >> bicyclists have a few hours left to sleep before the first start in the silicone valley tour de cure race tomorrow. the race benefits the american diabetes association and has four routes ranging from 120 kilometers to 25 kilometers. check in starts at 5:30 tomorrow morning at the hewlet packard complex in palo alto on

. good evening to you. we saw a quick return of those low clouds moving in. and, well, tonight we are pretty much with grey. one exception to that area is the north bay still dealing with mostly clear skies. let's take a look at what is

happening outside our doors where you see the low clouds will join us again in the morning. the winds have let up just a little bit so gusting at times to 20 miles per hour. but blowing a little less. sfo is still reporting 18 miles per hour. 17 in oakland, as well as areas right around palo alto. 15 miles per hour in san jose. and a west southwesterly right around livermore. 18 miles per hour. as we move through the evening hours, the temperatures will continue to fall. right now we are sitting in the mid-50s. we do expect to drop another 4- 8 degrees in the overnight hours. this is the disturbance that actually brought us a little bit of drizzle along the coast with those clouds out there. a little bit of lift. and, well, not hard to get some drizzle out of that. but the trough will continue to move east. and as it does we will see nice improvements in time for your sunday. back it up just a little bit so you can get a better idea. you can almost see the access, the cloud formation here as it continues to sweep through behind it a ridge of air pressure. you see this here, this will be right off the coast in time for monday.

that will bring us back our 80- degree weather. between now and then we will deal with temperatures below average. we will have the low clouds as we wake up tomorrow morning, you can see it here very widespread all the way through and perhaps into the sacramento valley. by 10:00 it begins to retreat. looks like the east way, as well as the peninsula is continuing with the low clouds. and then by noontime it is pretty much burned off with the immediate coastline into areas of the north bay just it looks like marin and golden gate seeing some of this fog. by 2:00 in the afternoon will be the best time we see mostly sunny skies. the immediate coastline will be mostly grey over the day. drizzle possible across the coastline. possible cloudy skies and the temperatures warming 2-5 degrees over what we saw today. the winds won't be as bad. for the overnight hours and into tomorrow morning, 48 degrees is expected as we start the morning in santa rosa. low 50s around the region. 53 in hayward. 52 redwood city. the afternoon highs, again,
