live report, lloyd. >> reporter: mike up that road in portola valley is where a bar-b-que was held tonight for mitt romney. a campaign worker called it a low key event. as this event flier points out, admission was far from low key, one to $10,000. >> reporter: the bar-b-que was at the home of mike mcelley. he twitted 200 supporters were there for bbq and wiffel ball. we're told romney arrived dressed in suit and tie. but quickly dress down. the former governor of massachusetts is here to raise money. the latest field poll shows him leading the gop field in california preferred by 25% of registered republican voters. we talked to one guest as he was leaving. >> the governor arrived right on time. his lovely wife anne and he

directions. the slow down started about 4:00 this afternoon. a track switching equipment caused the delay and might have been heat related. service is back to normal. the fog rolled in through golden state bridge, so thick the bridge could hardly be seen. chief meteorologist bill martin joins us now to tell us how much the coast cooled down. >> that fog is coming in fast and is bumping our temperatures. temperatures into the triple digits. concord 100 degrees. the national air-conditioning back in along the coast. i've got a good sea breeze right now about 20 miles per hour. temperatures are down a good 10 degrees from where they were last night at this time. these were the highs from today. highs tomorrow are going to be significantly cooler. so when i come back i'll have your forecast for tomorrow and

i'll show you exactly who's neighbors that fog will be in. new video out of contra costa county where firefighters fought flames. the fence did catch fire but crews were able to put it out within 30 minutes. the chief on the scene says neighbors reported seeing five kids running from the area where the fire started. in all about an acre burned. the alameda city council approved a new contract for city city firefighters. in that incident firefighters did not go into the water to save a man because they said they had not been trained. many residents did not accept

that. >> we hear the city council me negotiated in good fate, but i personally don't think they worked in good fate on may 30th on the beach. >> the council voted 4-1 on the new three year contract. it freezes wages and firefighters agreed to concessions for their health and retirement benefits. the future of alameda's animal shelter also on tonight's city council agenda. the city has signed a memorandum. currently the alameda police department runs it and transferring it to the nonprofit could save $100,000. state controller chung says lawmakers will not be paid because they failed to pass a budget on time. we have reaction from both sides. >> reporter: some lawmakers at the state capital were hot today and it had nothing to do

generally agree that the comptroller did the right thing. >> we need to live within our means, balance the budget and get people back to work. >> reporter: most democrats grumbled in silence. but most said while some lawmakers are threatening to go to court to challenge the withholding of their pay california still does not have a budget. and the start of the fiscal year is just nine days away. rita williams, ktvu channel 2 news. the department of motor vehicles is temporarily suspended registering vehicles in july and august because it doesn't know how much to charge. changes to the state budget may effect registration fees. the dmv says it will wait until july 1st to send out renewal notices. the agency says vehicle owners will get a 30 day grace period after they get their registration notice. law enforcement agencies are aware of the situation and

won't issue tickets. and new at 10:00, napa is scaling back its red light cameras after a grand jury and a judge both found fault with the program. ktvu's debra villalon is live where people are seeing red. >> reporter: we're at highway 21 in napa where 121 splits up to sonoma. and this electronic eye keyed on the rolling right turn is the one being turned off for good. red light camera operator red flex sells itself across the country on the strength of its surveillance. drivers barreling through the red light. but tonight the arizona company hit a speed bump. here cameras have been clicking away at four locations for four years. >> the key of having the desired effect they are hoping for. that is they are changing driver behavior. >> reporter: and reducing accidents the grand jury says.

new video tonight there's been another deadly shooting in east oakland this evening. police tell us that about 5:45 a man was shot multiple times near a street. a few blocks off international boulevard. police say it was a drive by shooting. at this point they have not named the victim or any possible suspects. a bloody trail and a body found in the bay. tonight homicide inspectors are piecing clues together hoping to locate the person of a young man who's body was found in san francisco marina district. eric rasmussen live in the city to tell us where police think somebody saw something that could have helped solve this crime, eric. >> reporter: this is a well traveled area.

it's also well lit. everyone if we turn off the light we brought with our camera here you can still see fairly well. and detectives hope somebody saw the young man who's body was found fully clothed right here in the water. it was a long trail of blood that eventually led police to the body of a man floating in shallow water at the north mason marina. >> i walk right around here. >> reporter: it's part of the same path elizabeth walks through after opera practice every night. >> it's unnerving because just to think that somebody had happened around that time, and i could have been walking. >> reporter: detectives think the victim did not die in the water and may have been stabbed several blocks south. police are also focused on this green volvo with washington plates. neighbors say two men in their 20s had been camping in it for several weeks but were nowhere to be seen today. >> we do know that last night was a warm night out.

there might have been many people out. we're asking that if anyone was in the area, saw anything, not sure what they saw or heard to go ahead and give us a call. >> it's kind of weird. >> reporter: boaters tell us that they did not see anything and it's not a place where neighbors are used to witnesses crimes. >> it's strange, it's one of the most beautiful neighbors in san francisco. there's always private boats there. it's the last place you would expect to find a body. >> reporter: that vehicle also had a sticker from the navy. i can tell you detectives were here back at the scene putting fliers just like this one on poles. more description of the victim, they say he's a white man about 6'2", he was wearing red and black tennis shoes. at one point in the night she may have also been wearing a black shirt. we'll bring you developments as

they come in. we're live here in san francisco, eric rasmussen. new at 10:00 just hours before a young indian woman and her mother were set to be deported the two received a last minute reprieve. shahad a law honor student and her mother were scheduled to be deperted to india. but the womens attorney said that they were allowed to stay. >> she's not leaving today but we're still in the fight because this is like i said temporary. >> reporter: she came to the u.s. when she was just six years old. her mother applied for a visa when she arrived. their attorney says that the mother still believed her case was under appeal when she was stopped last year. if group posted this video

on you tube, it shows officers arresting joshua harr in front of the capitola pg & e payment released with a promise to appear in court on july 28th. a pg & e spokesman told ktvu they can't threat public safety and its customers to do business. our new exclusive ktvu field poll shows more californians are opposed to nuclear plants in california. our poll also asked about offshore oil and gas drilling. 53% of those questioned say they are against more drilling on the coast and 43% said they favor the idea.

by a large majority republicans support offshore drilling and democrats oppose. former monterey congressman panetta is said to become the next secretary of defense. panetta says he's honored by the nomination and the strong vote of approval. he takes over for robert gates who is retiring at the end of the month. panetta will have a full plate with libya, and iraq and afghanistan. it's been reported that about 10,000 forces will return home to the u.s. in less than a year. some 5,000 service members are expected to be recalled this summer and another 5,000 by winter or next spring. there are currently some 100,000 american forces in afghanistan. and the president will outline his plan during a live address at 5:00 tomorrow night. and we'll bring you that speech live during ktvu channel 2 news

at 5:00. it will also stream live on ktvu.com. a quiet night at a fraternity turned into a wild morning as more than 2,000 kappa sig members ran out of their home. over 2,000 students are now looking for new places to sleep. >> reporter: an orange glow lit up the early morning sky as flames devoured the kappa sigma house. firefighters poured 2,000- gallons of water a minute on the fire. as sun rose, the exat the present extent of the damage -- the extent of the damage was evident. >> i was ready to go to sleep and we heard people screaming fire. >> reporter: a safety officer took these photos of the intention flames inside before concerns of a roof collapse forced them to evacuate. all 28 residents inside escaped unharmed. >> it was right outside my door so it was a laundry room.

there was smoke everywhere. >> reporter: this chicago native said he lost everything expect his prized guitar discovered today in perfect condition. >> it's just a crazy feeling losing everything you have. especially in your home, all your belongings and just like that. >> reporter: today firefighters helped retrieve fraternity photos and memorabilia. this fraternity members first priority to buy underwear. >> i'm wearing my only pair. tomorrow i'm going to try to salvage whatever i can. >> reporter: where are you going to stay? >> at home, back in pleasanton. >> reporter: from the ground the damage appears minimal. but when you move up the roof is gone. and from our camera higher up you can see the entire top floor of the fraternity house is gutted. the house is considered a total loss. and more details tonight, 17 of the 28 fraternity members are now staying in temporary dorm housing. the rest say they plan to stay

with family. one firefighter was injured with second degree burns on his hand. but has been treated and released from the hospital. the cause is still unknown but fire investigators say it may have started in the laundry room. in this first day of summer we had a heat advisory, spare the air day and first triple digit heat. now we have the fog. it's back in the forecast it's also back along the coast right now. so we basically for the first day of summer had every bit of summer you would expect. as we go into tomorrow, along the coast just upper 50s, low 60s along the bay low 70s where there were 90s. mid-80s, upper 80s, mid-90s. you're still going to find the temperatures in the mid- and upper 90s. but that's down from today. cooler as we go through the next 24 hours.

taxi cab drivers in san francisco locked their doors and stopped their meters. the cabbies say they want lower credit card transaction fees. as christien kafton reports, they are not asking quietly. >> reporter: san francisco city hall was surrounded by a sea of yellow, white and red. cabbies are angry over a number of issue, most notably a 5% credit car fee. abwai says he and his colleagues have to pay that fee. >> when i go to the airport and the customer gives me $40, $2 tip, $2 is going to the cab company, it's not going to me. >> reporter: cabbies took their concerns to city hall. they want the municipal transportation agency to do something. commissioners met today but cab issues weren't on the agenda. spokesman paul rose says the agency can't do anything about

month from now. his announcement comes on the heels of nathaniel ford's decision to resign. today mta approved the $384,000 search. union members with the contra costa county fire department voted to what will amount to a 5% pay cut. union president vincent wells says the 300 union members gave up 5% of their current pay and waived 2.5 personalty raises that were scheduled to take effect in july and january. the contract that was approved by union members tonight is slated to run through june of 2014. santa clara county could soon have just one fire service. the county board of supervisors unanimously approved to request today to look into the cost of

consolidating services. the contra costa fire department services part of morgan hill. government attorneys were expected to announce at a hearing set for this friday whether they will retry bonds on three perjury charges. a jury dead locked on the charges earlier this year a second hearing set for july 1st is scheduled to secure arguments that the jury made a mistake. prosecutors want both hearings delays until august 26th. there's no word when the judge will make her ruling. iran plans to hold the trial for the uc berkeley

the family of michelle le has hired a private investigation firm to help find the missing student. hayward police say they consider her disappearance a homicide. but le's family is still searching as they did this past weekend. they say the private investigators the frame group will work separately from the fbi. authorities said today pilot error was likely the cause of an airplane crash that killed eight people. the asian aircraft crashed and caught fire after coming in too low in heavy fog. in greece the prime minister survived a crucial confidence vote late today. this will likely avert a debt default that could have triggered a worldwide financial crisis but there are still more

this week at the paris air show. engineers say the jets three engine types conventional jets, rockets and super sonic jets will allow it to speed at mach4. the plane is expected to run on alternative sources, including bio fuel but don't pack your bags just yet. a launch date is estimated for the year 2050. >> protesters rallied at the state capital today calling for lawmakers to keep all state parks open. they are upset on closures of 70 parks. the closures are slated for next year. those who support keeping those parks open are calling on lawmakers to divert money to fund the park. the state auditor says such a move would be illegal. it was a hot one today, triple digit heat on this first

tomorrow. the fog is doing its thing. this is the computer model. it's not super great with fog but it's pretty close. this is the same model we use to show rainfall. it picks up the fog here. not a real problem. probably around mill valley. looks like we'll have clearing. the fog should push back immediately again tomorrow night as this next weak weather system moves in. i'll show that to you here in a minute. after that high pressure weakens, we have a system up here. moves down the coast, that is probably the mechanism that will clear the fog out in the afternoon. after that the fog will reform tomorrow quickly. it'll push it in. and when that fog gets pushed in the temperatures are going to decline. it's not going to get real cold, but temperatures in the hot spots, high 70s low 80s not
