ktvu has more from san francisco, where they have been investigating the reasons for the up and down of the market. >> reporter: well, talk about damage, take a look at the board behind me, you can see stock after stocks closing down today. the key factors, fear of european banks failing, and some very bad economic news here at home. at the closing bell today, the dow's unsettling dive brought nervousness from last week's drops. >> we dropped points in the first 30 minutes. and that is just fear that we're going from a slow growth, on the growth to negative. >> reporter: today's drop, the biggest bomb, fears that european banks may fall or fail. >> do we see a repeat of 2008 when banks had trouble funding themselves, and had to cut back on lending. >> reporter: more from the

report, morgan stanley said that the u.s. is close to a recession, and the numbers rose to 408,000, slightly higher than last week, financial experts say the wild numbers impact the market traders the most to make a living off short term sales. individuals should focus on the long-term. >> it is not as scary perhaps as it was in march of 2008. and the economy doesn't seem to be in the same -- dire danger that it was then, or in the fall of 2007. >> reporter: some investors who weathered the recession seemed to agree. >> its the new normal, right? so literally -- i'm way -- i react less. >> it will happen, it will come back up and drop again. >> reporter: the analysts say markets could drop even lower in the coming weeks as people look to leaders here and overseas to take some sort of action to stop another recession, reporting live in

san francisco, ktvu channel 2 news. right now in hong kong, they're down 2.4 4%, the nike, up 2%, and shanghai index, up 1%. and hp causing stock to sink in almost 10% in after hours trading today. later, what is behind the company's decision to get out of the business it helped the pioneer. and the booming business of buying and selling gold. how worries about wall street is putting cash in people's pocket. and a new school year, beginning tonight a special police patrol returning to the streets near campus. ktvu learned about a partnership that is designed to keep students safe and help the university. amber? >> reporter: frank, tonight, campus police are teaming up with berkeley police to target problems that often come with a large student population to return to school. they are looking at the areas

they focused on. every thursday, friday and saturday night, one berkeley police officer and one uc officer will ride together. there will be two teams in two squad cars patrolling near campus, with an especially close eye on fraternity and sorority row. police told us this is the second year of the joint safety patrol, launching last august after more than 300 complaints from neighbors. the patrols lasted until mid- may and started tonight to coincide with students returning from summer break. 6300 under graduates are moving back this week, some to greek houses, others to dorms or apartments. >> what are your thoughts about school? >> reporter: some students told us increased police presence is not necessary, that drinking and parties are part of the college experience, but others say they have mixed emotions. >> compromises on both sides for sure, students being smarter with alcohol, possibly

southern california attorney philip kramer is one of four lawyers charged, among a total of eight people, some 2500 california homeowners are named as defendants. harris said the homeowners paid between four and $10,000. and an agreement involving toyota and the former operators of the numi plant, who will settle a lawsuit with workers, several filed suit, saying the coil legally -- they denied them benefits. many employees missed out because they were on medical leave. altogether, about 500 former mumi workers, including the 700 who filed suit will split the 6 million payout. and more on bart cell phone service, we checked on the policy when they meet next wednesday. bart cut off service at stations in san francisco last

thursday, in an effort to stop a protest that never happened. that action prompted the group, anonymous to hack the transit agency over the weekend. bart's decision to cut off cell service has sparked a nationwide back lash and raised questions on whether or not the transit agency violated the people's right to free speech. and a change in policy could help a couple in san francisco avoid being deported. we already told you before well and mack. mack is from australia and has not been able to become a permanent resident. he is facing being deported next thursday. the new policy faces on deporting illegal immigrants who are criminals, while allowing others to stay in the country. and president obama taking heat for leaving on a 10-day family vacation. he arrived on cape cod and will spend his holiday on martha's vineyard. he met with the economic teams.

that has not stopped the criticism. others say he should not be taking a vacation while the nation's economy is struggling. and new at 10:00, prosecutors in santa clara county say dna evidence helped them arrest a cold case murder suspect. 61-year-old david dixon of richmond is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow for the 1977 stabbing of a woman. prosecutors say blood found on rachel moncrief's pants matches the dna, this was the first time they opened the cold case since it was reestablished in february. and police investigating a fatal shooting tonight, happening at 6:00 this evening in the 500 block of pierce road. police say the shooting was sparked by a fight of people in two cars. the victim was inside the car when he was hit. a family member at the scene identified him as carl purvis jr., he was just 19 years old

and a father. in addition to the gang, the members of the task force were called to the scene. the car is is described as having a large rim and a spoiler. and in san rafael, the gunman never had a hostage, we know know, the suspect hid in a room, and told negotiators his girlfriend was with him. but police now say that she wasn't, and that the suspect later killed himself. >> we are also very thankful that nobody else was injured. no officers were injured. the public at large remains safe. >> reporter: authorities say the gunman was peter james thomas, who apparently died of a gunshot wound to himself. we have now learned that his girlfriend was not in the hotel room with him during the day- long ordeal. she was in another room in another part of the hotel.

it is not clear why she was not there. >> we're going to investigate the situation, and determine any involvement or level of involvement she may have. >> reporter: thomas was wanted on a warrant of burglary, drugs and weapons, also suspected of being in a standoff at a store last week. they say he fired a shot out of the window after they tracked him. and that prompted the decision to close interstate 580, leading to terrible traffic jams all day yesterday. earlier they lifted a plate, then reopened the freeway. but they say they lost contact with the man this morning. so they drilled a hole in the wall of his room, inserted a camera, and that is when they saw his body. police had evacuated 40 hotel guests, including this man who has a flight to new zealand tonight. >> so an inconvenience for hotel guests and inconvenience for thousands of drivers.

and san rafael city manager plans to total up the over time and other expenses. just an hour ago, the coast guard says they have recovered a body in the san francisco bay along with a missing canoe, they are waiting for the coroner to identify the body, but says it matches the description of the boater. the canoe turned over at treasure island, two friends made it out, saying that butler stayed near the boat to get some keys. the two were located near brick's island in richmond. and back here, a lot of fog coming your way, and a major cooldown as we head to friday. i'll show you which cities cool the most. gold never looked so good for bay area buyers and sellers. who is cashing in. how much one person got. and first, developing news, these pictures just in from the

. developing news from east oakland where a woman is in critical condition following a house fire. this video just came in the ktvu news room moments ago. the fire started about 9:00 in a three-story home. they reported lots of flames coming from the house, the

firefighters pulled the woman out of the burning home and at first thought others may be trapped inside. however, a search of the home turned up nobody. we are told, though, that a couple of residents are not accounted for at this hour. and the cause of the fire is not known. we're working to get more information. if we do we'll bring it to you during the course of this news cast. new at 10:00, another day with the stock market going down, and concerns about the economy send the price of gold to a record high, at 1820 an ounce, more on the gold rush and unexpected boost. >> reporter: the owners of this jewelry store say buying gold has always been just a small part of their business. but now they have a sign in the window, and they say piles of gold jewelry like this is coming through. this lady is cleaning out her jewelry drawer. >> it was stuff my father gave

me when i was a teen. >> reporter: and filling up her wallet, coming in meant she got $2300. >> i guess i struck gold here. >> reporter: she is not the only one. dave mcconnell showed us what he received. >> it is unbelievable, every day it comes in, more and more. >> reporter: he says he paid out 5400 yesterday alone. he and other gold buyers get paid when all of the gold goes to the refinery, now making up a huge part of the business for this family owned store. even way up from last year. >> lots. hundreds of thousands, couple hundred. >> reporter: he says more and more of his customers are like this woman, who is spending her extra cash on a vacation. and not necessarily people selling their jewelry to make ends meet. even at more than 1800 an

ounce, mcconnell believes the price of gold may not come back down to earth for a while. >> as long as the economy and consumers, people in general feel not confident i think gold will continue to do well. experts say before you run out the door to sell your gold jewelry, shop around, get several estimates and check with the bbb, eric rasmussen, ktvu. and the high price of gold could also be behind a crime surge in oakland. police there say a number of robberies were reported throughout the city where people just essentially rip the gold necklaces off people's necking. a majority of those thefts occurred near the fruitvale bart station in the early evening hours, authority say they had as many as four of these robberies a day. and crews practicing how to put out the wildfires today.

the city laid off 49 firefighters last year because of federal budget cuts. then they allowed them to hire back 22 of them. some have not had training since the cutbacks. >> we're really happy that these firefighters have come back and are helping support the city and providing a really good service. >> the firefighters practice containing a fire by raking the embers towards the burned area. they say these are all wild land fires. california firefighters with a special tool to help fight wildfires. starting next month, a major fire like this breaks out, nasa will fly over in a plane outfitted with red sensors, the images to be sent back to cal fire to help develop a plan on how the attack the fire. we have an update tonight on a wildfire burning southeast of lake tahoe. so far it burned more than 3600

acres since it broke out tuesday afternoon, in douglas county, nevada. burning in steep areas. right now the fire crews only have it 50% contained. the fire destroyed several structures, including the area of the bureau of land management. and the restaurant accused of discrimination, by treating the latino workers different than asia workers. they allege that latinos were given worse jobs such as cleaning the bathrooms, saying that the employees were held to different standards and reduced hours. and a popular restaurant chain is changing the practice after a surprising ingredient was found in a menu item. we learned why it was an unusual issue in the diverse community. >> reporter: with the hungry university of california less than 100 yards away, chipotle

has a steady stream of diners. but what they don't know is a main ingredient comes with a side of bacon, the pinto beans are made with a small amount of bacon. >> i think it is important to know it, where people may not eat pork based on religion or food choice. >> some would be upset. >> muslim, even some christians don't eat the pork, so they could not eat chipotle's pinto beans. >> if you were dying, you could eat it to survive. >> reporter: he is a rabbi. >> it says we don't eat it. it says it is impure for you. >> reporter: the people who order it are told the beans have meat, so they should have the black beans. >> i think it is a big deal.

>> late this afternoon, i talked by phone with a spokesperson for chipotle about the beans, and he says the company will change the menus to say the meals are made with bacon, that will happen in the coming months. cool front ktvu. today is the warmest day we'll see for a while, temperatures trending back down. the fog is pushing inland. i have oakland, alameda, these are the current temperatures. kind of chilly up in napa, still warm in fairfield, a big strong sea breeze will have a major impact on the forecast temperatures for friday, because it will push a lot of fog and low clouds our way, dropping temperatures as much as 10 degrees in the inland bay locations. along the coast, not a big change, but around the bay, you drop 5 degrees inland further, antioch, dropping 8-10 guess,

and temperatures mostly in the low 50s and 60s. we'll be back with a specific look at the bay area forecast, see you then. five days after a deadly stage collapse in indiana it happened again, this time in belgium, fans run for cover as a storm knocks down a stage at a music festival there. at least three people were killed, 70 others injured. and some of those are very serious. one teen says there was confusion and mass panic, again this comes -- several days rather after five people died in a similar incident, in indianapolis last saturday. it is one of silocon

. one of silicon valley's pioneering companies is bowing to the demands of the modern consumer. ktvu's robert honda tells us why hp is getting out of the business it helped to launch. >> reporter: victoria is a law school graduate who started to use a different type of computer. >> i think that is for office jobs now. >> reporter: hp may be thinking the same way, saying they want to spin off the hp business, and spent over 10 billion to buy a british software company. >> the new process is continuing, the ones that survive like hp are the ones that can catch the wave. >> reporter: catching that wave is what they're doing, the fast growing computer repair company in downtown san jose, also saw the move away from pc's.

of close to 6%, it fell even further in after hours trading. members of the teacher's union set to take a crucial vote tomorrow that would allow the district to continue getting millions in federal grants. it calls for longer school days, the deal also includes a new wave evaluating both teachers and principals. if the teacher's union approves the deal, the district can continue to receive 9 million in funding over the next two years. and three of america's legendary astronauts on a new mission today to afghanistan. armstrong, lovell and others offered information to the air force. the astronauts were clearly impressed. armstrong was the first to walk on the moon, and lovell piloted a mission, and stenan was the

birds needing to be rescued. live in monterey, where they say people are to blame. >> reporter: frank, i'm at the wharf here, and people fish here, sometimes they leave the tools of the trade lying around, discarded hooks and fishing lines, proving dangerous to the pelicans here. >> well, right over there, all wrapped up around his wings, so -- the people just -- you know they get excilike this. and pretty soon you don't look at the bird, there it is, it is caught. >> reporter: so far this month, the spca for monterey county has rescued 61 hurt brown pelicans. 22 of them with hook injuries or a fishing line wrapped around their wings or legs. many died or had to be put down, all of the birds are less than a-year-old. >> the pelicans are coming in some with one hook, some locked

hit back in june now is upgraded to out-patient treatment. family members tell ktvu that 22-year-old mark mcgovern was discharged from the rehab facility today. now he can walk and talk and kick the ball. police have named the member of an opposing team as a person of interest. and halting a search for a 23-year-old woman, dalene carlson was last seen 11 days ago at a bar in stockton, authorities searched the calaveras river in stockton, police say they found a sandal she was wearing. police released a person of interest, but released him without pressing charges. and a man killed himself during a traffic stop in concord this morning, happening just after 9:00 when the chp pulled him over, because the officer suspected he was drunk.

the man got off chicago highway, concord police say when the officer walked up to the car, the man pulled out a gun and shot himself. the victim is said to be a white man in his 50s. his name has not yet been released. >> people are telling lies. people gathered in san francisco today to protest a killing. the shooting that sparked the protest happened last month. but police say in that case, 19- year-old ken hardy actually killed himself either by accident accident or on purpose. and san francisco's golden gate park getting a huge make over. ktvu david stevenson tells us more about the green technology. >> reporter: nine years after it was stripped to the bare bones, this is getting a new lease on life. >> it has been a long haul to

do this. >> reporter: this wind mill was built in the early 1900s. both were used to pump in fresh water from underground, to irrigate the park plants. decades later, they tore it down and shipped it to the netherlands for repair. >> the slip was coming off the sides. >> reporter: the four million in donations and city and state funding helped the wind mill become almost ready to turn again. >> i remember it growing up as a kid. it will be nice to swine see it working again and spinning. >> reporter: crews are working on the siding, but the center piece is the tower, worked with hundreds of yards of copper shooting that will turn green over time. it is secured in this huge moveable shed. the wind mill's tail is getting exposure to the elements.

construction crews say it is a one-of-a-kind job. >> it is fun for all of us, one of things you will never do again. >> reporter: the wind mill will be ready sometime next year, but a ceremony next september will happen to replace the top of the cap. in san francisco, ktvu. and it is happening again, another giant wall of dust going across phoenix tonight. the huge dust storm hit at 6:00, with winds traveling close to 45 miles per hour. there are reports of snapped power poles around phoenix, and flights were temporarily delayed at sky harbor. this was the third massive dust storm in a month. and word that england's prince harry is heading to california, both here and arizona in the next couple of months for military training on an apache helicopter. after that is completed, he will be a full fledged apache

. a large sinkhole swallowed this suv today in detroit. a woman, her daughter and granddaughter were inside the vehicle at the time but were able to escape safely. it is still not clear what

caused it. the people in the area say a water main was repaired there last year. and they noticed a dip in the road recently. and aids activists, protesting across the country about the price of drugs. about a dozen protesters gathered in boston city. the protest organizer says he dropped off about a thousand letters expressing concern about the high cost of aids drugs produced by the company. they say the company is not changing on the prices. >> when you have the pricing at $10,000 per patient per year, and the same drugs are being provided at cost in low income countries, for six hundred per patient per year, there is a lot of room to change new. >> the company didn't comment on today's protest. and starting on sunday, at&t will only offer unlimited

texting plans, scrapping the lower cost plan for 10 a month. instead, customers can choose from two options, a 20 a month unlimited text message plan or a family plan for 30 a month. at&t says most customers already use the unlimited plans. the smart phone application, four scare, lets users check into restaurants and bars and other places. you can check events as well, people at a sports stadium or music venue can check in, alerting their friends when they arrive at their location. and news tonight, an attack on the bus by the palestine militants, israel retaliated, killing at least five suspects in gaza. gunfire and explosions have been heard across the region. and in spain, the pope kicking off the world youth

. new at 10:00, a new proposal to help struggling state parks through private enterprise. as ken pritchett reports, some say it is a shame to commercialize the parks but others say the alternative is even worse. >> reporter: wild life, calm waters and a beach where others come to play with their animals. this is the state park, a park with a cloudy future set to close due to budget cuts. >> it is a sad thing. >> reporter: but an idea is cooked up by a local business just up the road to keep the park open. >> we proposed that we would put some picnic tables and

barbecues back there. and maintain it. we would clean the toilets, put a bigger trash can in. >> reporter: heide gregory with the oyster company here says the extra picnic tables would benefit their customers or anybody else visiting the park. >> every logical idea will be looked at very seriously. >> reporter: the california state parks foundation says that the public-private partner ships have been around for years, but with 70 state parks to close by june first, they're getting more interest. major corporations are being looked at to save some of them. >> this idea has caused concern with some, saying there should be an environmental impact study done if you're going to bring more people here. and there should be a public process to vet the idea. >> reporter: emory says that the state has strict rules. >> we won't have bud beach,

anything like that. >> reporter: big corporations or small business, the parks being saved may be a common thing in the years ahead. in marin county, ken pritchett, ktvu. and the state assembly today unanimously passed a bill to keep protesters a thousand feet away from funerals. the measure is in response to the protests at military funerals. it brought counter demonstrations. the bill was sent back to the state senate for minor amendments, and then goes to governor brown. another bill aims to make colleges and more universities more transparent. it requires them to open their books to show donations and contracts with their foundations. they are looking at sarah palin's speech last year after questions were raised about how much she was paid. the governor has ten days to sign or veto it. and looking at next

tuesday, combating west nile virus. the fogging area will be to the north, highway east to the south, the fogging is set to start at 11:00 next tuesday, lasting for several hours. the move comes after several mosquitoes collected in the area tested positive for the west nile. and a city worker installed a 15 miles per hour sign outside the elementary school this morning. the mayor and others looked on. lee said come january all 200 of the city's public and private schools will have signs lowering the speed limit when children are present. and the winds are kicking up out there, the fog pushes into your neighborhood, it will be there tomorrow, almost all of us will have cloud cover, down to evergreen, we go to the
