a major employer plans to cut thousands of jobs. >> well, and frank, that report came just as the bank of america announced it could cut up to 10,000 jobs another sign of uncertainty as more californians are looking for work. >> raymond is the manager of a restaurant in the san francisco financial district where hot bowels of noodles are in demand and now he is in demand because he has a sign out saying now hiring. >> people ask for what kind of position we are looking for. it's really bad right now. a lot of people to not have work. >> today unemployment numbers came out for july showing san francisco's rate at 9% for unemployment. overall, 2.1 million

californians were out of work. >> i was stressed out because i could not find anything at all. i had a hard time finding a job even temping and stuff like that. >> bank of america still announced that it may cut 10,000 jobs nationwide. the banks are streamlining and while the private sector generated jobs many companies are staying careful. >> if i can stay where i am, it maintains my margins. a lot of people are in the same boat. it's hard to hire. >> we had it in previous recessions, we lost jobs that never came back but we gained more than enough new jobs. in this recovery, we have not seen that yet. >> july's biggest job losses came in financial activities and services and government jobs that offset some of the slight gains in the private

sector. more details now to new unemployment figures. the labor department said that unemployment went up in 28 states last month. the rates fell in 9 states and stayed the same in 13. overall, hiring was up slightly last month and the nationwide unemployment rate dropped a 10th of a point to 9.1%. now do those unemployment numbers and the volatility on wall street mean a double dip recession? we will talk about that in a moment. the dow industrial started the day in positive territory and when the final bell range, it had dropped 172 points. the nasdaq lost 38. this was the 4th straight losing week for the market. a day after hewlett packard announced the changes the stock took a beating.

in a single day they had a loss of $12 billion in share value. the company announced yesterday that they plan to sell the pc division and hp is in the process of spending $10 billion to buy a british software company. you'll find more details on the shift in strategy for hp and how it may be a sign of apple's success. look for the wall street tab. new information tonight about a woman that was run over and killed by a san francisco muni bus, that bus hit her at 18th and hartford in the castro district this afternoon. we have been talking to police and witnesses and this is what they say the woman was holding when she was killed. >> frank, we are at the intersection where the accident took place, this is a busy area with lots of pedestrians and vehicle track, now just a short while ago, across the street, neighbors stopped by with cancels and flowers and created a small memorial for the

victim. >> police say the woman struck and killed by the driver was young. 25 to 30 years old. she was walking in the crosswalk and had almost made it to the sidewalk before she got hit. she had a lime colored cell phone and that caught my eye. he saw her holding her cell phone as she was crossing the street. >> what was she doing? >> she was talking on it, she seemed distracted. >> business owners heard screams. >> i could not believe my eyes. the body was under the bus. >> the driver of the muni shuttle bus was traveling down 18th street and was making a left turn when the driver's side of the bus struck the pedestrian trapping her underneath. investigators say the driver was not speeding and that there's no evidence that he was impaired, and standard procedure he will be tested. the muni driver was not on a

the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. no arrests have been made. a 4 and a half hour police standoff ended peacefully this afternoon. it started at 1:00 this afternoon on allendale avenue on high street. the man told the police that he had guns in his home and terminally ill. the man was convinced to give up. it not clear what happen led to the standoff. a former police officer pleaded not guilty today. he and another man stole marijuana and methamphetamine collected as evidence so that they could sell it to street. the men are accused of robbing prostitutes during fake sting operations and operating a massage that -- massage parlor.

>> a child that was struck and killed at 6 6:00 clock last night. a crowd gathered today at the scene of yesterday's hit and run. a mother and her three children were crossing this busy street at 6:00 in the evening when marcus lopez garcia failed to stop and hit the boy. that boy died today. the driver took off and stopped at a nearby park but a witness that was listening to a police scanner spotted him trying to alter the appearance of his car and called the police. >> there was a large sticker in the back window, a giants sticker and at the time the witness observed the suspect he was trying to remove the

sticker from the vehicle. the witness said he got a ride out of the area. the witness took down the woman's license plate number and passed it on to the police that arrested garcia last night. he has two prior arrests for driving without a license. one as recently as a week ago. tonight evelyn gonzalez held her children's hands tightly. she said neighbors agree a simple is fix could make this crosswalk safer. >> lights. stop sign, something brighter. something else that can attract driver's attention. you can see by all the children in the neighborhood, this is a busy crosswalk, garcia was arrested last night on felony hit and run charges now that this 4-year-old has died they will seek to add, a homicide charge in the case. also in sonoma county, investigators have released a

what the body -- confirmed that the body that was found was butler who was in a boat that overturned. the friend made it safely to shore. a woman that was pulled out of a burning home has died. flames were shooting out of the home. they rescued an 88-year-old woman and she died this morning from her injuries. the fire caused heavy damage to the house and investigators are the still trying to determine what started it. three other people that lived in the home are staying with neighbors. >> friends and family gathered today to say goodbye to a piedmont high graduate. glenn graduated from san diego state this past spring. he graduated from piedmont high school in 2005. glenn died on august 13th

well labor dispute is growing at the south bay's largest sewage treatment plan. they say what the contractor, anderson pacific is not using properly classified workers and meeting wage requirements. now san jose is seeking a temporary restraining order at the plant that serves 1.6 million people. it's a little over the top. but, you know, the city did what they felt they had to to. >> anderson pacific is a nonunion contractors and said that it tries to comply with all labor requirements set by the city. >> lake county officials say the stench coming from clear lake seems to be going away. for the past month it has been infested with algae and a
