ungodly amount of thunder. >> it just got louder and louder and louder. i woke my wife and said it's a tornado. we just dove into a closet. >> reporter: scattered wind damage was reported. tourists want lee to speed up and move away. >> this is our first time, we want to see the scenery and the weather is not letting us see that. >> reporter: storm is another crucial test of the crescent city's flood protection system. officials say all the pub stations are going to be manned until the storm is fully gone. live in new orleans, craig boswell, ktvu news. lee was downgraded from a tropical storm to a tropical depression with winds at 20 miles per hour. moving to the east northeast at only 10 miles per hour. the current position moving out

least 1,000 acres in just a matter of hours. right now it is 0% contained. 30 homes evacuated. it started around 11:30 this morning after a small plane went down in tapachepe. investigators are looking into the death of a washington state man found at yosemite national park. park rangers say jean hall appears to have died of natural causes. hall was found near his tent. search teams had been looking for him since thursday. hall's death is the 18th so far this year. coroner's have identified the body of a man dead

after a stand off. deputies say andrew harper barricaded himselfed in a unit. a woman who was also inside got out before deputies arrived. about a half hour later, harper let the children go. negotiators try to convince him to surrender. deputies entered the apartment and found harper dead inside. a petaluma man has been arrested after trying to lure a 15-year-old girl into his car. sayed ferdows tried to lure the girl into the car. police told ktvu they do not think he is connected to the

kidnapping of a 23-year-old woman early that morning. mentecino county sheriff's deputy spotted aaron vasler outside his mother's home. masler ran into the woods and has not been seen yesterday. he's accused of gunning down jerry melow yesterday. authorities now also believe vasler killed matthew coleman last month. san francisco may get all the attention but oakland is also home to one of the largest gay populations in the country. today that city hosted its second annual gay pride celebration. patti lee was there. samba drumming melded with classical music at the gay

to his calf. he's already been nominated for a medal of valor, and now a purple heart. >> it's huge. >> reporter: aaron has been traveling for more than a week. he had to travel from kandahar to kuwait, to dallas. >> a lot of people thanked me, said hi. >> they're heros, all of them are. but i don't think they're all comfortable being placed on that pedestal. >> it doesn't worth what happened to get it but it's all right. >> i'm very proud of him. he's a very, very just a really good kid. >> and father for others he's someone his brothers and others in the community can look up to. he's a graduate of livermore high. he's expected to come home for good to the united states sometime after the first of the year. reporting live in oakland, jade

hernandez. the u.s. army says a decorated soldier from livermore has died of rabies. kevin schumaker served from may 2010 until may of this year. officials say he died last wednesday in new york where he was stationed for. the military says how he contracted rabies is unconfirmed. shumaker is survived by his mother and father. the event was part of national disaster preparedness day. it included presentations by the police department and the red cross. the event was important due to the fact that most residents lack sufficient preparation as well as adequate supplies for any kind of natural disaster. >> we're grossly understood prepared for a natural disaster

which shouldn't be the case especially since we live in california. those who attended the event were given energy supplies and provided tips on how to prepare for a disaster. just days before the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, federal authorities are warning that terrorists may try to launch another attack by using a small plane. >> reporter: terrorists are intend on using small planes to carry out an attack on america. that's the word tonight from the fbi and homeland security. it's a warning that pilot jena wells is taking seriously. we caught up with her today as she got her plane prepped for take off at the san carlos airport. wells says she always keeps her eyes out for anything unusual when she flies. >> if you see anything suspicious at the airport, go up and talk to them. where are you flying, where are you going. so if you did hear something suspicious, maybe that might be

something you bring out. >> reporter: al-qaida operatives are still trying to get flight training so they can fly these small cessnas. wells is certified flight instructor believes there are a good number of safeguards in place to keep terrorists out of flight schools. >> the process for that is so intense. just going to the tsa background checks, they get fingerprinted. you have to do a bunch of paper work around that. >> reporter: still according to this latest law enforcement bulletin, al-qaida operatives believe security is lax. that's why private pilots play a crucial support. >> you have to be aware, i tend to be a little more protective than most. >> reporter: this comes right

sticks in your mind because, you know, they just fell within a few minutes of each other. >> reporter: ahmed was 5 years old. arehazi was seven on that day, both remember seeing the horrific images on the television. arehazi remembers the words. >> he told me not to go outside, not to talk to anyone. lock to doors so i was really scared. >> reporter: the teenagers who work as interns at the center of islamic relations say they didn't feel the full impact of 9/11 until they were in school. >> i just remember my group of friends started asking me questions like, wait aren't you muslim. aren't you one of them. and i would be no, no it's not like that. i remember one day, they just decided that i can't sit at their table anymore for lunch. >> reporter: ahmed says her first encounter with

discrimination is when her family went to a library and a woman cussed them. >> all i know is that she was really angry at us for something we didn't do. >> i had to go to therapy for a while which is hard for a child too. just to kind of emotionally and mentally deal with the trauma that followed. >> reporter: this mother says even her children who were born after 9/11 happened are subject to scrutiny. her 4-year-old son in particular when they go to the airport. >> my son, he is on the tsa list because of his name. simply because of his name. even though when we first found out he was two at the time. we were stopped and he was patted down. >> reporter: a recent gallop poll indicated that muslim americans are under scrutiny. muslim americans say if

anything 9/11 educated people of their religion. they make up less than 2% of the u.s. population but say this is their country too. >> i think 9/11 should sort of be a day for people to reach out to people of different cultures. when 9/11 first happened it kind of divided people. and you know now i think it should be something that brings people together. >> the next 10 years i hope that our country kind of heals a bit more. i feel like we're very wounded right now. so i hope that we kind of get ours back together, get the economy back together. start thinking of separate but equal religions. >> reporter: in a report kept secret for many years, the federal bureau indicates they
