[ male announcer ] it'll win you over from the very first taste. . this is the 10:00 news an ktvu channel 2news. >> lightning strikes over the east bay as thunderstorms spark fires and cause fans to run for cover. good evening. i'm heather holmes. >> fast moving thunderstorms brought lightning, rain, even reports of hail to parts of the east bay. our cameras took these pictures in dublin. you can see several flashes lit up the scheme most of the thunderstorm activity was in the past two hours and right

now it's starting to taper off. here if dublin it was followed by a downpour. it came down very hard but didn't last long. the fire marshall said it sparked at least four fires, the largest near castle rock road. it's 75% contained. two other fires are burning on the east side and another near san ramone. we have a crew getting video now. at least two high school football games were disrupted by the thunderstorm. in lafayette, the folks got a good look at lightning. everybody had to leave the field. some took cover in the gym. it's resumed. and in mountain view our sports crew was at game between saint francis and palmo when the lightning started.

we took these pictures has the fans left the stands. it happened at half time. mark was covering the game and said so far its only been delayed but they may still decide to postpone it. >> this was a fast moving system. look at this. i will put it in motion. this was about 7:00. you can see just race through the bay area, it moved fast. in response to this weather system the national weather service has extended their red flag warning throughout the hills, the upper elevations of the bay area. i want to take you through the last few hours. this is when he had the lightning strike. we move forward and you see there, folks in the east bay getting a lightning show, especially right here, this is about 7:30 and you can see into time it shoots across the bay, by fremont. let me come in closer here. this is what i find really amazing is right in this area,

really explodes toward redwood. most of the lightning appeared to be cloud to cloud. we do have reports obviously mount diablo but most was cloud to cloud. you can see now frank mentioned started to taper you've. a real show, that red flag warning extended for the higher elevations of the bay area and it'll effect -- when you can expect a chance of more thunderstorms. >> . >> it was emotional tonight in san br, no as hundreds paid tribute to the victims of the pipeline explosion. bag pipes, bells and brief speeches marked this first anniversary of the pg&e

brought back a lot of pain. >> reporter: afterward only one family member who suffered a loss chose to speak. helen brown lost his mother-in- law. he is still under going burn treatment. he and his sister-in-law still have the scars. >> we brought another property. we are all done. we sold the property pg&e -- we are moving forward. >> reporter: other its chose to stay. this couple is rebuilding their home and hope to me back by the beginning of the year. >> this is kind of an interesting point where are you kind of turning a corner, you can kind of look behind you and see the progress you have made in the year and look forward with hope. >> reporter: a touching moment touching moment. there are plans to have a permanent memorial for those who died. live in san bruno.

>> the emotion at another gathering earlier today was anger, anger at pg&e. a few dozen protested outside their headquarters in san francisco. they want criminal charges filed against pg&e's top executives and they demand pg&e reveal where gas pipelines located. it's thought there are 150,000 miles of untested pipeline in california. >> sitting around waiting for repeat of what happened. >> in response pg&e issued a state helicopter saying it's committed to making the necessary changes to operate its pipelines safely and the company has issued it's own list of steps it has taken to improve safety. outside the headquarters of the california public utilities commission there is a bench dedicated to the victims and a plaque says it it's in memory

of a woman who worked for them. jacqueline greg died with her 13-year-old daughter. she worked for the cpuc for 21 years. we have more from the events remembering the anniversary of the disaster on our website, just go to ktvu.com. >> the woman accused of killing michelle lei made her first appearance today. amber lee just spoke to the suspect's former boyfriend. >> reporter: heather we are at the jail where the woman is staying in housing unit number 24. a spokesman for the sheriff's department said she is kept in a single cell away from the other inmates for her own safety because it's a high profile case. >> department in session. rthis afternoon the 27-year-old made her first court appearance. she is a accused of murdering her former school mate.

a nursing student disappeared three months ago while on a break. also in court today was this man, he is the father of the suspect's daughter and the man who reportedly came between the two women. just two hours ago i spoke to him by phone. when i asked him what the nature of his relationship was with lei he said they were friends. he also said he was in court to support the lei family. despite charging esteban authorities haven't recovered the body. >> we don't want to talk much about the case. we want to find michelle. >> reporter: during the hearing the judge ordered the woman to return on monday to be assigned an attorney and possibly enter a plea. she is seven months pregnant. a sheriff's spokesman said she will be given proper medical care. >> as far as some sort of get out of jail free card that's

east coast we first told you about is a effecting new york city. police set up checkpoints on streets in manhattan and randomly searched vehicles. extra police officers also patrolled airports, train stations and port authority bus terminal. the mayor is urging residents to go about their daily business while law enforcement handles the security. construction workers at ground zero held a brief memorial. the hundred workers aren't part of the official ceremonies being held this weekend so just after nine this morning they observed a moment of silence as an american flag hung from a crane in the construction area. >> a memorial was held today in pennsylvania for the passengers of flight 93. families gathered today at the national memorial sight to remember the victims. the plane was heading to san francisco when terrorists took control. passengers are credited with fighting back and keeping the hijackers from possibly trying to crash the plane into the white house or congress.

the memorial dedication is set for tomorrow. the president is set to visit sunday. the defense secretary paid tribute to the first responders who raised to the pentagon after flight 77 was flown into the building killing 184 people. he also said the people who carried out the attacks tried to weaken america but instead he said the nation grew stronger. >> because you don't mess with this country when you attack us. and what we made clear is that when that happens we will come and get you. >> reporter: the defense secretary also helped the volunteers who are mending an american flag badly damaged at the world trade center. it had been one of the largest flags to fly above ground zero. >> much has changed since the attacks but you have likely noticed the biggest difference at the airport. john hopped a flight from the bay area towbar bank to see if

golfer. she was only 21, already she had made her mark in the game of golf. as a student at kennedy high she earned all american honors. >> we didn't have a women's golf team. she competed the boys. >> reporter: her coach said she had a rare talent and eventually became a two time winner of the san francisco city championship and the women's amateur champion for northern california. >> beautiful swing. she did. >> reporter: labor day a passerby found her body near barnes and noble in the parking lot. a suspicious death according to police. >> we found her a short distance from her vehicle which is a 2008 four door honda civic. she was wearing a white t-shirt and gray sweat pants. republican tonight family and friends gathered to grieve at a visitation in fremont.

friends say its heart breaking. >> when i needed her her she was there. >> very charming. everybody loved her. >> she was one of the most real amazing girl. heart breaking. you nowitzkiing the situation. >> reporter: she won a scholarship to berkeley. her former coach said she was a fierce competitor and a gracious sports woman. police are say figure anyone has any information about her death they should contact investigators with the police. reporting live. >> the california justice council approved a loan to keep open almost a dozen courtrooms. it's for two and a half million dollars in emergency funding and that will let the court

cushion the blow if drastic cuts announced in june. the san francisco court will now close 14 civil courtrooms instead of 25. the money also means the courts will only have to lay off 75 instead of 177 as first planned. also in san francisco, a teen was sentenced today to 49 years to life for second degree murder. he was 15 when he shot and killed a teen. prosecutors said he was -- 15- year-old's don't see situations the same way adults do. >> demonstrators are warning of yet another bart protest next week after about 20 people were arrested yesterday. hours after the arrests, vandals struck at another bart station.

default as early as this weekend. ktvu channel 2news. >> upscale home decor store restation hardware is getting ready to go public. the company filed for an ipo. it was traded until 2008 when management led a buy out of shares. they didn't say when it expects to go public or what the shares initial price may be. honda is recalling hundreds of thousands of its suv's nationwide. they said stitching problems with the seatbelts in some of the suv's could cause them to come loose in a crash. the voluntary recall includes more than 310,000 pilates, built between 2009 and 2011. they said there have been no injuries caused by the problem. >> a man is a accused of stealing two million dollars from the founder of a nonprofit organization. a federal grand jury has indicted the 62-year-old on nine counts of wire fraud, the man is a accused of organizing

absent. we report on the search for a missing man who many consider part of the team. . >> reporter: there are die hard giants fans and then there is billy. >> we play oakland and he will be there to greet the bus, come off road trips and he goes down to los angeles and san diego, just part of the club. >> reporter: that's why the giants manager and so many others were worried billy seemed to disappear. security guard orlando green said he allowed billy chamber lane to stay with him off and on for the last few years, but he didn't show up for this game against arizona on august 1st and green hasn't seen him since. did he have anywhere else to go? >> no. >> reporter: while he may be missing there are reminders of him. they have a picture of him right here under the water cooler in the dug out. the same photograph is in the batting cage and the clubhouse. giants staff filed a missing person's report with san francisco police but so far there is no sign of him.

trade center. then he visits the flight 93 crash sight in pennsylvania and the pentagon. sunday evening he is to address the nation talking about national safety and remembering the haven't's families. san francisco police say they have canceled all vacations this weekend and security is high, especially at landmarks and transit hubs. extra officers plan to patrol the civic center for 9/11 ceremonies are scheduled. there will also be a close watch on the golden gate bridge. security will be high at the transamerica building. >> meat packages, any vehicles we feel that may be a possible threat we will be proactive taking them on. >> reporter: they said the officers will also be out in force, police say there have been no credible threats against the bay area. they are urging people to report anything that looks suspicious. >> france is also remembering the events of 2001, three of

. tonight's -- lightning sparked at least four fires and we have just gotten these pictures in. it burned about 15 to 20 acres. a larger fire burned at least 60 acres on the west slope near cast the road and north gate. firefighters say they are making good progress and have it 75% contained. two smallerrer fires burning on the eastern side. bay area transportation planners agreed to seek approval to build another 290 miles of toll lanes. the plan is scaled down from the first plan that called for 800 miles. planners decided on the smaller proposal because of the faulter in the economy. right now the area has only one toll lane along 14 miles of interstate 680.

the new toll lanes would be built in parts over the next 20 years. >> news of the world in egypt protests turned violent. crowds set fires outside the israeli embassy. since the fall of the president some have called for ending the 1979 peace treaty with israel. they also attacked the offices of the egyptian ministry. many are angry with the slow pace of reform. in libya fights headed out from their staging area and into the city. it's one of the last strong holds of supporters of gadhafi. street fighting was reported. the revolution force has given the loyalists until saturday to give up. in france the united states treasurey secretary were meeting today to face the crisis. they said they all must find their own way rejecting calls for a unified response.

. we are getting late information in to the newsroom of a hostage situation in emoryville. it's happing at the office depot. several people did manage to make it outside but authorities say a masked gunman is holding three people hostage inside the store. the mask is said to be one of the v for vendetta masks.

they got a call about 20 member minutes before ten after miss arrived one ran outside. the store located next door has been evacuated, we do have a crew on the scene and will update from the scene before the end of newscast. >> state lawmakers passing laws with the session in it's final hours. ken was there when a bill pass that could affect the future of the niners. >> no, calderon. >> reporter: they expect to vote late in to the night with midnight the deadline. a bill to ban the open carry of guns passed, just one of about 200 bills tackled in the past two days. the goal was to do something, anything to spur job growth. >> maybe our boldest effort yet to try to do that. >> reporter: one bill could benefit the new stadium project in santa clara.

extended for basically the -- all the hilly locations of the bay area, really through sunday, they have it through saturday but i bet they up it through sunday because the models kind of keep it going. what is your weekend going to be like? it'll we mostly to partly sunny, in the afternoon a stray chance for a thunderstorm and then again on sunday. don't go right out and change the plans, just be prepared for a little bit of what we saw tonight. we had heavy rain as well. this low pressure, you say how come we don't hear about this? we have been talking about them all week but this low pressure is about seven hours early and doing what it did. we expected it more tomorrow. what happened was it formed quickly and pulled that moisture right into up from the south and in our direction in a rapid fashion. this is the pattern that continues through the weekend. forecast for -- dry lightning, chance of thunderstorms in the weekend president that's why there is a red flag warning for the bay area through tomorrow. and most likely see it again on

sunday. am i -- really concerned about the west slope of the sierra nevada. the computer model does this afternoons when they start to do off. we look at 4:00. from about south down toward -- the white mountains and north you see a lot of activity. then it backs off tomorrow night and watch sunday. you aren't see age lot over us. there is that chance of a stray one. this is significant. on the dry season like this, this time of year in lightning, not real wet, a lot of dry lightning so there is a real concern. i know cal fire -- looked on some of the websites and they have been stocking up and loading up on people for the bay area weekend, but for the northern california weekend. 90 brentwood, the highs cooler than today. looks nice, fog staying at the coast. be prepared for a bit of what we saw tonight. the five-day with the weekend always in view. there you go in -- it's already starting to feel like fall. this isn't horriblely strange

situation right now at the office depot in emoryville. >> we have just arrived. >> reporter: the situation is developing as we speak. we want to show you what we can see the you see the best buy. that has been evacuated. we are a ways down from the office depot because police say they were worried about our safety. they have a huge perimeter off 40th street, also a command most set up here and the details are that 9:30 police got a call of a robbery. when a few made it out they confirmed that is what was happening. they called for help from object land. we understand that several people have made it out of that office depot but others are still inside and this is in fact an active hostage situation. the only problem they don't know how many are still inside, if it's customers, employees, a
