good evening i'm heather holmes. >> and i'm ken wayne. they shined into the sky, two towers of light. as new york and the rest of the america honor the victims of 9/11. tonight the rays of light a illuminate a reflection of home. it's been 10 years since 3,000 people were lost. >> my son, firefighters leon smith jr. who was the sunshine of my life. he gave his life so that others can live. >> reporter: in new york, survivors gathered where the twin towers once stood to read the names of those who died. it took more than four hours for all 2,983 names to be read. survivors spoke of and to those who died. >> my father sebastian gorkey who i never met because i was in my mother belly.

i love you father, i love you for loving the idea of having me. you gave me the gift of life and i wish you could be here to enjoy it with me. >> reporter: two giant waterfalls were unveiled. around each waterfall was bronze walled etched with the names of 9/11 victims. and there was a concert today in benefit of victims. denise graves is one of those who sang at the concert. mr.obama said history will show the nation survived a painful blow in the 9/11 attack but kept the faith and emerged stronger. >> these past ten years have shown that america does not give in to fear. to rescue workers who rushed to

the scene, the firefighters who charged up the stairs. the passengers who stormed the cockpit, these patriots defined the very nature of courage. >> the president noted that 2 million americans have gone to war since the september 1 attack. he says the strength of the country lies in the country wanting to move on from a country at war to a country of peace. and the president and first lady traveled to shanksville, pennsylvania. they placed a wreath where a plane went down. the flight was headed from newark to san francisco. family members announced the names of the loved ones lost including seven people from right here in the bay area. a former cal rugby player is

among those credited from stopping the plane from slamming into either the white house or the capital. >> charles bingum. >> the truth is this location, this place is like no other. because the deeds aboard flight 93 were like no other. >> reporter: the obama's then shook hands with those of the crowd and some chanted usa while one man expressed thanks to the president for getting osama bin laden. in union city, millions of the people came out to pay tribute to the victim of flight 93. >> fire. >> reporter: a 21 gun salute and 10 doves marked a decade since passengers on that flight bound to san francisco overpowered the hijackers. flowers were placed at the memorial for the passengers and crew. >> they stood up against evil

and then they were brave and bold enough to stand up for freedom. and that's what this country is all about. it's a proud day. that we're still standing strong and we are who we are. >> reporter: the flight 93 memorial is the second largest in the country. second only to the newly dedicated national memorial in pennsylvania. september 11th has had a powerful effect on muslim americans. many of whom were targeted after the 9/11 attacks. >> reporter: love of country was obvious, so was sadness for the lives lost 10 years ago. >> we wish for peace always, to

our beloved country the u.s. and the people of the u.s. >> reporter: hundreds of people came together to remember the past but they say also to build a better more collaborative future. >> only with god's intervention is each nation culture and faith given its own integrity. >> reporter: tonight's muslim event stopped for prayers toward meccah. it began again with that universal signal of peace, the dove. this woman says that everyone the worse can bring the best in people. >> someone said you this and that, it was very hurtful. because i'm for peace, i'm not a terrorist. >> reporter: leaders say the 9/11 terrorists hurt them as americans but also as muslims. >> these people have hijacked what is known to be a peaceful religion. >> reporter: there was plenty of red, white and blue here

parked one year since that tragedy. ktvu's jade hernandez was with community members and a conquest woman as they gathered today. >> reporter: san bruno's survivors gathered about 3 miles away from this neighborhood where the explosion took place. a support system is still evident a year after this tragedy forever changed this community. walking into san bruno city park, the festive mood was infectious. >> still walking around trying to find everybody. >> reporter: bob hanky was trying to reconnect with those still living with the stars from this scene. on that day when his phone rang he could not believe the news. >> a neighbor called me, he said the block is on fire. so we came up to the house, but we couldn't get in. we seen the ball of fire. >> my house was three houses away from being burned down. >> reporter: eight people died. just recently the national transportation board blamed pg & e for the explosion that

rocked the neighborhood. curious residents today glanced over schematics for the rebuild. >> it's going to take a long time. >> your relatives and people live here, we just need to stick together. >> reporter: the mayor addressed the hundreds who attended. >> this is your day. a day not to think of anything else but sitting down with friends, enjoying some food. enjoying some laughter, we have a long way to go. but days like this will help us get through. >> reporter: congresswoman speier hopes that residents

will find healing. the city says it will continue to build infrastructure, it's just going to take time. jade hernandez. oakland homicide investigators are looking into a suspicious apartment fire after two burned bodies were found inside. the fire broke out at 11:00 a.m. neither the cause of death or the identities of the two badly burned bodies have yet to be released. but it is believed that one of the victims is a woman. invest investigators are looking into a report of a witness who says two people ran out of the billing after that fire be -- out of the billing after that fire began. our crews shot this video in richmond early this morning as a strike team from marine county fire began to move south. crews are helping to put out the flames. this is video of the comanche

fires southeast of bakersfield. crews are also working to put out a fire southeast of bakersfield. over all more than 25,000 acres across the country have burned. officials say the fires are caused by lightning from thunderstorms yesterday morning. the evening commute tomorrow could be another long one for b.a.r.t. riders. scenes like this have become common place on mondays. b.a.r.t. is now warning that demonstrators could disrupt service again at its downtown san francisco stations tomorrow. passengers are being urged to make alternative plans. groups seeking the disbanding of b.a.r.t.'s police force had been organized these protests including one for tomorrow -- tomorrow evening. a white house officials confirms the president is set to send congress the new bill tomorrow and call for swift passage. the $447 billion plan includes lower social security payroll taxes and new hire, new

spending to hire teachers and rebuild schools. the president is also scheduled to visit ohio and north carolina this week to pressure lawmakers to pass that bill. new york city 10 years later, a live report from ground zero as a nation remembers and reflects. on this anniversary, millions of people more than on any other day in u.s. history did something for others. and yet another recall of ground turkey to te

san francisco's coyt tower tonight is reflecting the spirit and emotion of both the city and its firefighters. the tower turned red, white and blue starting friday night and will keep the patriotic look through tonight. in new york it was a very emotion day as a new memorial was unveiled. kraig boslow is live now where the memorial was unveiled. >> reporter: good evening to you. the message was powerful, ten years later families still struggle. a decade has past since that unthinkable day and the grief has not eased. >> we can never unsee what happened here. >> reporter: in lower manhattan, families placed flowers next to victim's names

that are etched in bronze. the attack on the twin towers killed almost 1,000 people. the president, mrs. obama along with the former president and mrs. bush stood strong as the nation mark ed a milestone. >> that's what it came down 10 years later. see the rebuilding and process. >> reporter: in shanksville pennsylvania another remembrance for united airlines flight 93 went down and the deaths of 40 people forever bound together by heroism. >> others are alive together because a bold group of americans rose from their seats. >> reporter: at the pentagon, a memory to remember the 144 people who parished there. >> the true message of 9/11, the winds that unite us are

thicker and the re resolve is stronger than the millions of tons of concrete and marble that make that ephasis behind me. as for the world trade center memorial being built. officials say they are on track to complete the project by 2015. the seven world trade building is already complete while buildings two, three and four are all under construction. officials say they are now working to install columns in the world trade center transportation hub which will help support a subway line through the new center. in the skies, security concerns were heightened and twice together suspicious behavior by airline passengers prompted authorities to scramble fighter jets to escort passenger planes. the first incident involved a frontier airlines flight from denver to detroit. an airlines person says two

people were spending quote an extraordinarily long time in the bathroom. when the plane landed, two people were kept for questioning, they have since been released. according to law enforcement officials three passengers made repeated trips to the bathroom. some passengers were concerned the three men were using hand signals to communicate. two of the men were israeli and one was russian. and the tsa spent days preparing for today. and passengers told us they appreciate it. >> i think we have a lot of good people in this country doing a lot of important work

to make airports and other forms of transportation safe. following 9/11, the transportation security administration was introduced changing how passengers are screened. doors to cockpits were also reenforced with many bullet- proofs supporting the pilot and crew from the rest of the plane. the efforts of two men with bay area ties that helped to bring down flight 93 is being remembered today. >> i love you sweety. >> reporter: that's a phone message alice hoglan left for hinglan. bingum played hockey at cal. a lafayette overpass was the sight of a different kind

of remembrance today. >> the lafayette flight brigade dressed the el portola bridge with dozens of flags. today many of the flags have the slogan never forget printed on them. the event featured live music and a speech by a new york firefighter. some in attendance said they will never forget where they were on 9/11. >> 9/11 is a day that changed us. it changed all of us. >> a candle lit vigil ended the event. at parks and playgrounds people across the bay area found meaning at the end of a

rake or a paint brush. spanning out to spruce up shelters. or gave out cards to say i care. >> i'm a retired firefighters so it has a special meaning for us. >> in remembering 9/11, it's not just sitting around and talking about it because that doesn't change anything. >> reporter: before scattering to their duties, volunteers shared moments about why. >> take the day back from the terrorist and make it a day about us and our community and moving forward. >> reporter: but somber faces were replaced by busy hands. 15 singing for meaning meant more today with a purpose. now a nationally recognized day

there is word tonight that one of former libyan leaders's gadhafi's son is now in najir. gadhaf former lib -- accompanied by eight former libyan officials. gadhafi's wife and some of his

sons have refuge. we're looking at a suicide bombing that happened yesterday in wardack province. those injured were not seriously hurt and should be able to return to duty soon. the attack happened in the same area as the downing of a u.s. chanook helicopter. in other news of the world tonight across the globe people stopped to mark the tenth anniversary of the september 11 attacks. at the american embassy in singapore, guests lit candles to remember the people who died in the attacks. a in paris a steady rain fell on those who gathered at the human rights plaza for a memorial service. two replicas of the towers were

erected. the namesover those who died held the names of those who died. and in rome the coliseum was lit in honor of those who died in the attacks. silent vigils were held today at the monument. pope benedict xvi led prayer for those who died. he called a bigger commitment for justice. more than a thousand people filled a san jose church to remember 9/11. patti lee tells us how firefighters honored their fallen brothers and sisters. >> reporter: 343 boots symbol rised the lives of fallen firefighters. a bell ceremony represents their last alarm. >> i try to hold back, but you know i had tears. especially you know the ringing of the bell. >> reporter: david lerma one of san jose's four firefighters sent to ground zero says he was gratified to see the phaoupbty

of silence then the names were read of all firefighters who died. san francisco firefighters and police also observed the memorial mass together this morning. the service was held at st. monica's church on 27th avenue where father green is considered the firefighters spiritual leader. today's mass had extra meaning because of the deaths of two firefighters. >> this is the 54th annual mass. we're tieing it in with 9/11 but it's also to remember all those firefighters lost in the

line of service. more than 200 firefighters dawned their gear and went up 100 flights. >> this is the first time we decided for the tenth year to just grind it out. >> i'm out here to show support for families out here, for people who passed and just in the memories of everyone who passed. nationwide not just in new york but everywhere. it's a great cause and we're glad to be here to do it. >> we will walk for people who can't. >> we'll have 200 firefighters and they're going to climb the building twice. so this is just really us trying to provide a platform for them to pay tribute. >> you got it. that's good. >> as we gather here today and we do what we're going to do in -- going through what those firefighters did on 9/1.

climbing and descending the stairs, to protect and to serve it's in our hearts. and we will never forget. meantime peace activists added shades of pink to the golden gate bridge today. dozens of people wearing and waving pink marched across the bridge to commemorate the day. some members of code pink held heads during the journey. the group organized the walk to bring attention to the wars that have started but not ended in the last 10 years. >> i wish they would put down every gun. we have 19-year-olds looks at each other and shooting each other, what is going on. >> reporter: one woman covered a peace sign covered in flowers. others waved whatever pink

severe cases but rare cases death. there have been no confirmed cases in santa clara this year. prizes keep prices keep going up at the gas pumps. the regular price for unleaded is $4. in oakland prices shot up 19- cents a gallon over the past month. in san jose a gallon of regular went up 18-cents. items celebrating the career of amelia earhart went up for auction. 24 photographs of earhart brought in $13,400. the items belonged to a contra costa county woman who got them from a friend 20 years ago.

we've been tracking a very active weather pattern. there'll be a few showers in the bay area this morning into the afternoon hours. but the bulk of the action has been from the east to the south. you can see not a lot of coverage to show you. i was watching this one cell

out to our east between 8:00 and 9:00 this evening. you can see the loop right there moving to the east of stockton. that basically dissipating. for the most part we do have clear skies or partly cloudy conditions across most of the region. forecast headlines for tonight we do have this, with partly cloudy skies fog will be developing overnight. tomorrow some morning cloud cover, skies becoming partly cloudy and the extended forecast. cool temperatures for the beaches, we're going to warm things up a little bit inland. tomorrow, partly to cloudy skies. temperatures will be in the 50s, a few locating starting in the 60s right around mountain view and san jose. livermore at 58 degrees. look at this satellite radar. yesterday the bulk of the activity has been center out toward the sierra. all because a center of low pressure, we've been watching that throughout the united states. this will trigger more thunderstorms in the sierra for tomorrow.
