and san jose state university remembers the anniversary of nine-eleven in a creative way. update news starts now. hello and welcome back to another semester of update news... im jenna johnson. and i'm ... rina santoro thanks for joing us. new census figures out this week show more than 16 percent of californians are living under the poverty line. that's the highest rate in eight years.... it's hitting many college students hard. courtney jolander is anding by live on campus with more... courtney? this weknsus report confirms that the poverty rate increased dramatically for young adults... age 18 to 24. and here on campus... many people are hurting.... but don't talk about it. " " we have students in our midst that are sitting

next to us in our classrooms who didn't have a meal yesterday." >> social worker wiggsy silversten has been working for san jose state university for more than fifty years and has noticed an increase of students on campus. s-j-s-u president mohammad qayoumi is aware of the students struggling financially. " " " the number of students with federal pell grant recipients are more than twice that of standford cal tech, and usc educates jointly...we have done our best to make financial aid available" >> pell grants fr the federal government give undergrads anywhere from five-hundred-and-fifty-five dollars to more than five-thousand dollars ... based on the expected contribution from the student's family. s-j-s-u student lisa weber shows that there is hope for students on a tight budget.

and other grants" >>" students with extreme money issues can look into three specific areas: federal pell grants scholarships and online text books to ease the high cost of school. san jose police are investigating a sexual assault that occured near the campus. two female victims were attacked...early sunday morning... while walkig on east san salvador street near the intersection of ninth street. aan approached them from behind and groped them... they escaped the man by hitting the attacker with a soda can...neither victim was injured. " (jose garcia, sjpd) "in this situation there were two indiviudals two women who were walking together. that's the right thing to do is always walk in numbers. the more in numbers the safer it is."" the attacker is descriped as... latino..in his 30's with short black hair between 5-feet-5 and 5-feet-8 inches tall. he was wearing a black shirt with a logo and blue jeans.

police say this attack is not related another groping incident that occurred on campus the previous week. the smells of an electrical fire still linger in the halls of dwight bentel. after a visiting fire chief expressed concern over the air quality last week interim journalism director bob rucker agreed further testing was needed. experts are now testing gas s ll as particulates both inside and outside the building. results of the second test are exed by the end of next week and willdetermine if the building is safe...which is especially important for people with lung conditions. ">>(kyle stephens senior) "i have mild asthma, it's not really a problem most of the time but wh it dos fre up it's just an annoyance and i need medication for it."" the university environmental health and safety director says at this point there is no reason for anyone to be alarmed. s-j-s-u is making new technology avail for students. ipads are a ol students would love to use for their education but can't afford to buy.

" at the dr. martin luther king library... students, faculty and staff can borrow something more than books e student computing rvice center is lending i-pads.... for up to four hours at a time. john wenzler is the associate dean for digital futures at s-j-s-u and was a driving force getting the ipads. (john wenzler) "we introduced the ipads to see how the students would use them to help with their classes." students are using the tablet compurters for everything from leisure activities to taking notes. (jeff cortez, marketing major) it brings technological diversity because not aot ple know how to use an ipad. (standup) ipads have also become avaable for students at the casa student suess centr which is loone op florr of macquirie hall in room 533 peer menr, michelle pasc he bng the ipads to the success center. she sees this as a good oppurtunity to get students hands on the latest technology. (michelle pascua) "i think it's the innovation that it brings with having technology at your fingertips." you can borrow the ipads for however long you want but you can't leave the student success center with them. the ipads are easy to check out and they bring a new option for technology to s-j-s-u on campus bryan dericco update news"

college day san jose... is coming up on september 30th. the goal is to make college a reality that comes to life for students. san jose mayor chuck reed announced the event this week... to fifth graders... at horace mann elementary. organizers say its a day to set goals...for kids to aim high and dream big because college can make dreams come true. school administrators are trying to get their students interested in the whole concept of college. " for today the message we really wanted kids to hear is that college is for them college is for everybody don't let anybody tell you that college is not for you..you know sometimes i think students the doors have been closed for students by other people" educators from all over santa clara county joined the kickoff.... as well as san jose state students and studenrom oh universities. ### more students more bikes and more bike theft... because of this ongoing problem, some students are reluctant to park their bikes on-campus.

but amanda del castillo shows us the biggest trouble spot and ways to prevent yoike from eing stolen. " hundreds of bikes come to campus daily and all-too-often leave with the wrong person. bicycle theft at s-j-s-u is frequent... and frustrating. the campus made room for 400 more bikes in the enclosures this semester. the cages allow students to park their bikes for free with a deposit of ten-dollars for an access key. but senior kelvin ye remains skeptical about campus efforts. (kelvin ye: anyone could just pay ten dollars and get a key to the cage.) s-j-s-u's commute coordinator, otto melara says the campus' downtown location is adding to the problem... and says the 4th street side of m-l-k library is the hottest theft spot. (otto melara: the bike racks that are right there i think they have a very high... the highest percentage of bike thefts.) melara encourages students to use u-locks, instead of chain locks. (ryan whitchurch: probably one u-lock isn't enough which is kind of weird to say.)

public relations senior ryan whitchurch had two of his bikes stolen from campus... totaling one-thousand dollrilst property. whitchurch says he takes his bike with him wherever he goes. (ryan whitchurch: quite honestly i just don't trust my bike locked outside.) the senior says bike theft is a continuing issue that doesn't seem to get solved. in order to prevent future theft, it's important to properly secure your bike to a post with a durable lock.( (stand-up: the transportation solutions office on-campus allows students to exchange their old cable locks for a brand new u-lock. on-campus amanda del castillo update news.)" more than 200 people gathered on campus last weekend to commemorate the anniversary of the nine-eleven attacks. they observed a moment of silence... but for the most part... talent lit up the night. fernanda lopez reports. " singers, dancers and poets filled the music building sunday night in remembrance of september 11th. into the light hosted by the music and dance department shone light on that tragic day 10 years ago.

sjsu music professor, layna chiaankas is one of several professors who performed. "it was our gift to the university and the community at large and as you can see by the turn out it was more than we anticipated." rot rotc student dillon harvey says he is proud to participate in the color guard for the event and says he remembers 9/11 too. "i was an honor to be a part of the color guard. i was young but when it happened it made me get involved in the military." the concert began with the singing of the national anthem followed by another musical performance by professor joseph frank. "we feel strongly that music and dance touches the heart better than words sometimes can." a candel light vigil ended the night to the sounds of a solo trumpet outside the music building.o on campus, fernanda lopez update news."

for years san jose state has had a reputation for not only having a large number of students, but also having large number of international students. study abroad administrators say sjsu third in california's desireable exchange program locations...right behind san deigo and san francisco. reporter gina esposito is live on campus to tell us whisear, we might see more exchange students than ever before. gina? of san jose state's 28000 students, about 3,000 are international students. some are here eager to earn a degree and others are here for just a semester. this year san jose has the largest group ever. " (kati bell) "it's interesting for exchange students because they expect to see californian's blonde hair...blue eyed students and they look out and there are students from all around the world." study abroad supervisor kati bell says international students are dealing with the same problems as american students...top of the list...housing.

the abroad off facebook g supervisor says international students are dealing with the same problems as american students. top of the list, housing. their office set up a facebook group in the summer for exchange students who weren't able to get housing on campus >> a few of them got housed in the hotel which is a couple miles away. they wanted to stay on campus and have the whole american life. even american students coming back from their broad program were included in the group. the group helped students make friends and solve their problems efficiency >> what could work in california which you couldn't do in other states. that was a factor which is good to hear >> there are 105 states here

go around in a competition trying to wind up each other. arrested one graffiti artist on campus. if you see any illegal tagging you are encouraged to call 911 >> to join or not to join, that is the question many incoming students ask themselves. recruitment has just ended and now there are hundreds of new greeks on campus >> nearly 200 young women signed up to spend their weekend in high heels to find their home away from home. recruitment started on friday and ended on monday. when the women received a letter of acceptance or bid to one of the 6 hours. -- houses >> very exciting or new because i've never done this before >> they got an inside glimpse of what sorority life was like

>> all the girls are so genuine >> whether you are a commuter or just looking to get involved, joining is more involved than you think >> that's why we put so much effort to have process where we get girls come in and have other like minded women support here on campus >> she couldn't have imagined a better way to spend her weekend >> it's great to come back and see women are as excited to join the chapters and your legacy carries on >> if you see women across campus feel free to ask them what new organization they just joined because most likely they'll be happy to tell you >> san jose's joining cities in having a bike sharing program. it's a system where users can rent a bike for a #1345u8 fee. take it for a ride and return it. this will help students who don't own bikes travel the city

>> people who don't have a bike or don't have a place to store it, that way it's more convenient, you take a bike and leave it >> this program is funded by a grant. also bringing bike programs to san francisco, redwood cities, mountain view and paloalto >> this week san jose state was busy. some students on campus are show casing the moves by doing just that. melissa has the story >> this new wave of dance is called tricking.

enjoy the game from a brand new perspective. students sound off on whether they prefer a mac or a pc. well if i had the money i would totally get a mac because the cameras are sick but i guess i have to deal with a pc because i am on a college budget. >> if i have the money i would totally get a mac but i guess i'd have to deal with a pc. mac is probably the better way to go. there's less issues that pop up with it. the people at the mac store really easy and fun to deal with. i prefer pc just because you don't need to have certain programs to be involved >> pc for me because it's just i don't know. it seems cheaper at times. mac seems to be more

expensive >> i prefer mac because you don't get viruses you do with pcs. >> all right. so i heard the spartans went down to the rose bowl and did a little better this week >> they needed to play better this week and that's exactly what they did. after a loss against bay area rival stanford, the spartans faced another foe. traveled to pasadena and the rose bowl. the first ever meeting between the schools was close until the very end >> got on the board with a one yard run >> responded with a touchdown run capping a 12th place 88 yard run. scored with five minutes left in the half
