investigators should know if the remains found are those of a female or male. ktvu's jade hernandez spent the day at the sonol mountains. >> reporter: volunteers gathered to organize a search spread out over the area of half a football field. >> it's a dirt road. it is accessible by vehicle. we took our vehicles down there last night and yesterday. but it's lightly traveled. it does not get a lot of pedestrian traffic or bicycle or horse back traffic. but it certainly is a trail that's used. >> reporter: by mid-afternoon, authorities cleared the area and opened it up. the very spot where the remains were found were no longer hidden. there were sign that is county investigators were out here. we found this bone fragment left behind. what wasn't left behind, the remains taken away yesterday. a volunteer discovered what appeared to be a badly

decomposed body without clothes or personal items near by. whether it was a man or woman authorities couldn't tell. it was the second search led by michelle le's family this week end, the eighth over all since le vanished. one reason for the searches, cell phone trails led to this area. if dna evidence is needed, results on whether the remains are le could take weeks. le's cousin christine and michelle's brother michael could not speak to us tonight. sergeant nelson said today today's items may or may not be tied to the remains. in hayward, jade hernandez. federal investigators say a family on board the world war ii era plane that crashed at

the reo air races may help determine exactly what went wrong. a team from the transportation board remains on the scene there where the p51 mustang slammed into the ground on friday killing nine people including the pilot. more than 60 others were injured. investigators today sifted through the wreckage. >> the aircraft was equipped with a video camera facing outward. they have also found camera fragments at the wreckage site. >> reporter: the ntsb says the plane sent out data before it crashed about the pressure and temperature of the oil as well as the altitude and velocity that would help with the investigation. officials also said today the may day pilot sent may have been false. and a witness tell us what he saw and heard after the plane made impact. >> a second later the thing crashes right behind me. all i remember is trying to

run, i see stuff coming. and then that's the last thing i remember. >> ed larson collapsed from the impact of the crash and shrapnel hitting him in the back of the leg as well as the head. he also suffered a broken achilles tendon. 22-year-old michael wogan of phoenix was in the crowd with his father when the plane came down. wogan had muscular dystrophy. he overcame his disability graduating magna cumlade, he also started his own internet business. wogan wasn't supposed to be at reno but traveled after his brother decided not to go.

his father survived but suffered serious injuries. we have more footage of the crash on our website. the ntsb say it is pilot in a west virginia air show crash yesterday was attempting a roll over maneuver before he went down. a team of federal investigators today began piecing together what went wrong. they say the pilot was 300 feet from the ground when it began to climb. the plane was starting to roll but didn't complete the roll and then plunged to the ground. the pilot was killed. nobody on the ground was injured. here at home a hayward man was shot to death, his wife wounded in an apparent ambush at his home this morning. debra villalon live with why this couple may have been singled out. >> reporter: the victims were shot as they backed out of this garage possibly targeted because he was known to deal in

gold jewelry. john hopkins is one of many neighbors who heard three shots just before 8:00 a.m. and ran out to find the couple a 65-year-old man and his 59- year-old wife. >> the driver was like this. and the lady on the right side was still moving. >> reporter: the van they were in rolled across the street into another neighbor's yard. off camera he said his friend had no chance. >> i walked out there like two or three minutes after the shots, and i seen him slumped over and he was a hell of a nice guy. >> reporter: the guy he says who was prospering in this era of record gold prices. the victim was apparently a regular at sunday's flea market where he bought gold and gems. that may have been where he was headed this morning so early. >> if you buy gold, you better have a couple of thousands in your pocket, that's what you

have to do. >> reporter: the couple made a habit of parking this pickup truck in front of their closed garage. but leaving this morning were vulnerable to a gunman who surprised them then ran. hayward police searched but could not find the assailant and won't comment on robbery or business dispute as possible motive. two houses down from the victim's property is a neighbor with a security camera mounted over their garage. and that surveillance video may be of some help in this investigation. now the owner's grown daughter lives with them. the woman who was in the passengers seat is in serious condition tonight but is expected to make it. we're live in hayward. debra villalon. crews in san bruno are marking a milestone after a

rebuilding process after last year's pipeline explosion. on tuesday, pg & e plans to fill this large crater. it was left behind after last year's blast that happened in september. they killed eight people including injuring dozens of others and destroying 38 houses. san bruno's major is inviting residents to throw a shovel of dirt into the hole before crews begin the work. solyndra wants more time to try to find a buyer. the company entered a request to ask for bids. solyndra filed for bankruptcy earlier this month. a judge's vacation has delayed what could be the release of the two uc berkeley graduates inprisoned in iran. an attorney says he still needs approval from a second judge

for the bail agreement. as ktvu's claudine wong reports, family are hoping this could finally be the end of an ordeal that began two years ago. >> reporter: it was summer of 2009, when two american hikers were detained in iran. >> i have to assume he was in an area he didn't realize was iranian. >> reporter: the families of shane bauer, josh fattal and sarah shourd then began endless vigils. despite pleas from u.s. officials and the international community, iran held their accusations of espionage. >> out of his shirt he unraveled string and thread and made a little ring for her.

>> reporter: last september, iran released sarah shourd due to health conditions. but months would pass with little communication. sarah shourd never returned for the trial but it went forward and last month many were shocked as the two men were sentenced to eight years in prison. just last week, iran's president broke the news that release could be imminent. today one judge's signature appears to be all that stands on the way as the families wait and hope that the end of this long road is here. claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. officials tonight lifted the boil water advise advisory for more than 100 houses. homeowners had been ordered to boil the water friday after a man upgrading his plumbing accidentally connected his well to a city pipeline. officials say the water is now safe to ingest after samples

taken yesterday came back negative for e.coli bacteria. tomorrow might be a good day to ditch the car and take b.a.r.t. or mass transit. people are encouraged to cut back on activities that cause pollution including driving, using gas powered mowers or use hair spray. the plan is being called the buffet rule it's named after billionaire investor william buffet who often says wealthy americans don't pay enough in taxes. >> pick one area of the economy and you're going to say we're going to tax those people because most people are not

tragically. the couple inside died. >> reporter: jack fichner appeared stunned as he watched the fire in his home where he lived and cared for his parents in the 80s. >> jack came back after a week, that's why we were looking after them. >> reporter: the wife was an invalid, her husband frail. that they were alone when the fire broke out this morning an anomaly. >> we had planned to watch over them and somebody be here all the time. >> reporter: family and friends are now blaming themselves while neighbors can't stop reliving the horror. >> when i was over there, i could hear a little bit of moaning going on. i was pounding on the door, but then that stopped. >> reporter: security bars on doors and windows prevented neighbor jack tullis from rescuing the couple. but seven minutes later, fire crews axed their way inside. >> i nearly went to the right, found the victim in the chair. two firefighters behind me

pulled her out. and tried to revive her. and i immediately went to my left and i found the second victim who was deceased. >> reporter: vallejo's fire chief says this was not a big fire. you can see by looking at the exterior there's not a lot of obvious damage. it's the circumstances surrounding the fire that made it deadly. circumstances that have sparked questions, doubt and recriminations that will only be quited as a result of the ongoing police and fire investigation. in vallejo, patti lee. the highway patrol is investigating a motorcycle crash that left a woman dead last night. the chp says a harley davidson driver, a 33-year-old man lost control and crashed into a parked ford explorer. the crash happened near calarney drive in terra hills. a san pablo woman who was a passenger on the bike died at the scene. the harley driver suffered

major injuries. neither has been identified. deaths from prescription drug overdoses now kill more americans than car crashes. according to an l.a. times analysis, it's the first time such deaths have topped auto crash fatalities. the future found the most commonly abused drugs are oxycotin, zanax and zonof. the department says it happened after this man 20-year- old jesus rodriguez pointed a gun at officers early saturday morning on broadway. an officer fired at rodriguez, missed but hit a man and woman in their legs. the meeting starts at 6:30 at gene parker elementary school tomorrow. a new approach to dealing with exconvicts who violate

parol is getting a positive response. under the new approach, parol investigators are sent to county jail for a brief stint. usually days instead of back to prison for several months. since the program began last november, researchers say it's been remarkably effective in deterring drug use. san jose police say they are using all their resources to try to catch a violent man who's been on the lose since friday. they say he's responsible for a carjacking, robbery, kidnapping and homicide. ktvu's janine de la vega tells us about one of the victims. >> reporter: this is how friends remember 60-year-old cindy wynn. always smiling with a positive outlook toward life. >> she is the person i highly respect, she's like my sister. >> reporter: wynn was the officer manager at tn real estate. coworkers gathered wearing

black to mourn and to talk about what happened. wynn was found in a home. police say paul castillo is responsible. they say on friday he shot and robbed a man. then an hour later, investigators say he carjacked wynn and took off with her and her car. officers are working around the clock to find castillo. they say they are confident there will be an arrest. >> we're following leads in various locations. we're going to the investigation this case until a conclusion. >> that's a big loss not only for me but for the community vietnamese. and everybody you know really like her, admired her, she's friendly. helpful. >> reporter: coworkers found it

difficult to look at wynn's office. they say she's like a mother for them, cooking for them, giving advice. always offering help. she was a single mother herself and leaves behind two adult children and a teenage daughter. in san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. oakland police tonight are investigating a double shooting yesterday that left one man dead. police say 35-year-old weedfall and 39-year-old kevin robinson was in a parking lot on the 2700 block of foothill boulevard. they say that's when a man just walked up and opened fire. that's when weedfall fell to the ground, and was accidentally run over by a fleeing bystander. a wildfire is almost fully contained tonight. the mint fire in the remote area near agua dulce is 99% contained.

police in west sacramento have now captured that man and that man is now on his way to san jose. the name of the gentleman san jose police have been searching for is paul castillo. again the headline right now is that that man has been captured in sacramento and is now being transported back to san jose. in libya there was fierce fighting today between rebels and troops loyal to gadhafi for the town of sert. tonight phil black gives us a dramatic look at the battle for the ouster leader's birthplace. >> reporter: an ambulance is hit by a rocket propelled grenade. they and we are caught in the open.

months today in yemen as government troops and snipers open fire on tens of thousands of anti government protesters. security forces launched tea gas canisters on the marching protesters before the shooting began. at least 26 people were killed, dozens more wounded. president abdula sele has resisted calls to resign. protests have taken to the streets calling for him to step down. in other news of the world tonight, they are searching for survivors in northern india and nepal after a 6.9 earthquake claims the lives of at least 16 people. the quake hit about 6:00 in the evening and was followed by two large aftershocks. there are reports tonight that buildings have collapsed and that the quake triggered mud slides. there are concerns that the main extent of the damage may

click it or ticket. well we are wrapping up the last weekend of summer with some warm to hot temperatures out there. everyone the inland spots back up to the low to mid-90s. fall by the way begins friday morning. outside right now we do have mostly clear skies. we are tracking patchy fog out in the pacific out to our west, to our north and to our west. but temperatures still on the warm side. here is a look at the latest observations. livermore right now checking in 73 and san jose in the lower 70s right around 72 degrees. san francisco in the upper 70s, santa rosa lower 90s. san jose right around 88

degrees. forecast headlines for tonight, we do have this mostly clear skies. some patchy fog develops it'll be bumping up against our coastline. tomorrow we will continue to warm things up. hot numbers inland. the extended forecast mostly sunny skies and temperatures will be cooling off a little bit as we do approach the weekend. here we go with the overnight lows and temperatures dropping down into the 50s. pretty mild though and there's the patchy fog showing up around the golden gate bridge. high pressure has been strengthen and as a result we start to warm up. the ridge basically expanded over a good portion of the west coast. temperatures tomorrow about the same as today and could be a little bit warmer. temperature 70s for the beaches. inland spots back up to the 90s. fire danger will actually be elevated. we do not have any red flag warnings but something to keep an eye on with this high in place we also have the spare the air alert for tomorrow. so here we go with our fog
