double-murder suspect ended when a s.w.a.t. team shot and killed him. eric rasmussen was in fort bragg when authorities explained just what happened. >> reporter: heather, i can tell you people were packed here to hear the sheriff confirm aaron bassler was dead. a burglary tipped them off to his generlotion two miles from his mother's house, they say that is where a s.w.a.t. team shot him seven times. just like he was seen in recent surveillance video, they say he had an assault rifle in his right hand. the team engaged bassler and observed him fall to the ground. >> the suspect did not fire any rounds during this engagement. >> reporter: at this evening's us in conference, mendocino county sheriff tom almond said there was no shoot-to-kill order or any verbal contact

yesterday's message at this time. >> you will find continuing coverage on our website at ktvu.com. click on the bay area news tab near the top. an investigation underway tonight in bay point after a woman told sheriff's deputies she shot and killed a man who broke into her home and threatened her and her pregnant daughter. the video of the scene came into our newsroom a short time ago. contra costa county sheriff investigators say they were called to the home this afternoon. one of the two women in the home called them to the scene. investigators say it appears they may have known the man, but it's not clear what their relationship might have been. he was pronounced dead on the scene. his name has not been released. investigators say they are questioning the women, but no arrest have been made at this tile. also northeast bay today a deadly high-speed crash on an oakland freeway. ktvu's eric savidge explains why police were chasing the car when the accident happened. >> reporter: the violent crash

currentled this 1990 buick sedan, the car slammed into i concrete divider and burst into flames. three people inside were killed on impact, one woman survived. >> we found some of the parties ejected or partially ejected, which tells us as investigators that they were improperly restrained inside the car. >> reporter: this accident happened just about 3:00 a.m. on the 98 avenue off-ramp from north 880 in oakland. investigators say this car was traveling fast when it lost control on the curve and if you look closely, you can see it was split into two pieces. and san leandro police say they were chasing this car when the crash happened. they say an officer saw the car driving erratically through the parking lot of this food max store and tried to pull the driver over, but the car took off and police pursued. after the crash, investigators searched the car. >> we did find some beverage containers for alcoholic beverages. however, we do not now if impairment is an issue. >> reporter: san leandro police

say surveillance video from the food max shows the four people from the car stealing alcohol from the store, minute before the deadly accident. investigators say the three people killed were a 27-year- old man, a 29-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman. the woman who survived the accident was taken to highland hospital in oakland, with life- threatening injuries. san leandro police will be doing an internal investigation into the chase and crash, although a lieutenant tells me it appears the officers followed the department's pursuit policy. eric savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. ktvu news learned that the ntsb will not be investigating a crash involving an amtrak train that injured dozens of people in contra costa county last night. it's a story we first brought you on the 10:00 news. 37 partners and two amtrak crewmembers were released from hospitals the driver and the passenger of the big rig were not hurt. the train continued bakersfield after 1:00 this morning.

police say the big rig was crossing the tracks east of the breaking and enteringwood north of discovery bay when the transcibe hit it. the crossing has no gates or warning lights. a plan robbed and beaten on the streets of oakland has died more than a week after the attack. the alameda county coroner's confirmed 3-year-old brian little i have tracy died at the hospital. on september 21st police say he was robbed and beaten in the 800 block of international boulevard. he wasn't to the hospital to be treated and shortly after suffered a heart attack. anyone with information is asked to call police. >> wet weather is on the way and that means the fire season just with over noelle walker reports. >> reporter: this is the only area that is full of dry area -- there are a few perks to having a home atennial of civilization. >> if you are back here, you are out in the country. >> reporter: just to keep things in balance, there is a

for about two hours so the marine mammal center could corral the animal. rescuers say the 150-pound sea lion suffered trauma to its jaw. dogs were the main concern at a mayoral forum in san francisco today. several candidates including jeff ad.a. yb, leland lee attended this forum. they discussed a number of canine-related issues including dog play areas at risk of closure. advocates say the issues are important because one in three city households haze dog. the dog political action committee or dog-pac expands to endorse a candidate by next week. republican presidential candidate rick perry could consider sending troops to mexico to battle drug cartels. he was in new hampshire and says the current violence south of the border may require military action. later a perry spokesman clarified the remarks to say he

be added to the california firefighters memorial in sacramento's capitol park. firefighters in sonoma county say they are still trying to determine exactly what caused a barn near earlier this morning. that fire was reported just before:00:00 a.m. on east watmaugh road near shainsky road. crews were able to put out the fire within about an hour. no one was injured. firefighters though say that barn is a total loss. it has been three decades since the city of belmont has had its own fire department. ktvu's allie rasmus was there as the peninsula city's firefighters were sworn in. >> i have work for the belmont san carlos and before that south county fire for the last 13 years. >> now gary jacobs and the other firefighters in this group will continue to work in community as members of the new belmont fire department. >> we see the citizens on a daily basis. we see them in good and bad. and we have a loyalty to this community.

. a chaotic scene in new york city today as 700 demonstrators taking part in that "occupy wall street" moment moved their demonstration to the busy brooklyn bridge. the demonstrators were trying to walk across the bridge. hundreds were arrested. for the past two weak the demonstrators have staged large protests in manhattan's financial district speak out against corporate greed and social inequality. protests echoing those themes hit the west coast of the nearly 2000 people marched to los angeles city hall, taking the government to task for the 2008 bank bailouts, the high unemployment rate and questioning what they call "the overwhelming power of corporations." many of those who took part in today's protests carried signs talking about their own economic troubles. >> the pentagon is taking new
