around the world. people have been simply showing up outside apple headquarters. >> reporter: it's the kind of tribute you would expect to see for a major political leader or artist, flags at half staff, and out of view of news cameras, a glowing memorial of candles. tonight, mourners pay their respects to the man who fulfilled his life's mission to changed world. from tech employees to apple devotees. people flocked to the apple headquarters to mourn the loss of steve jobs. the flags were lowered to half staff outside the cupertino headquarters, short afterly the world learned that steve jobs lost his battle with pancreatic cancer. ♪ [ music ] this man showed his feelings by bringing a bagpipe. >> i just thought it was enough, that i needed to play

some music, and let people know here that, you know, pay my respect to this company, for everybody. >> reporter: the company shoed news crews away from the campus and told employees not to take photos. >> not so much compelled, as just what do you do to mark this event? it's something i've wanted to do personally. >> reporter: someone left flowers at the door. >> let's go changed world. steve jobs. >> reporter: he showed the shirt jobs autographed back in the '80s, when the first macs were novelties. >> there isn't anyone that has the same skill set that jobs has. a sense of purpose and place. he would incorporate all of that into the design standard that we use today. >> nobody touches him in terms

of storytelling capability, and putting something in your head that makes you want to dream. >> reporter: there are a lot of brilliant, smart people in silicone valley, but tech observers are stating the obvious tonight. the death of steve jobs leaves a void. live in cupertino, ken wayne, ktvu, channel 2 news. >> there was a steady flow of people tonight outside the jobs family home in palo alto. some brought flowers, others laid apples. some came alone, others came with children, and some prayed. apple's board of directors released a statement on jobs passing. it reads in part, steve's brilliance, passion, energy, were the source of countless innovations which enrich and improve our lives. the world is immeasurably better because of steve. jobs was born in san francisco and adopted by a couple in mountain view. he started apple in 1976. jobs first had treatment for

pancreatic cancer in 2004. he responded to rumors of his poor death, saying the reports of my death are greatly exaggerated. this january, he took another medical leave, and in august, he stepped down as ceo. >> the jobs family released a statement asking for privacy in their time of grief, and acknowledged many people would be mourning the loss. in his public life, steve was known as a visionary, in his private life, he cherished his family. we are thankful to the many people who have shared their wishes and prayers during the last year of steve's illness. the president and first lady also issued a statement. it said steve was among the greatest of american innovators. brave enough to think differently. bold enough to think he could change the world, and talented

enough to do it. stay with us tonight for continuing coverage. the loss of steve jobs is felt outside of silicone valley. this is outside the apple store near union square in san francisco. folks have been gathering there all night, some even crying, as they mourn steve jobs' death. we will go live to the store and hear how people are remembering the visionary leader. go to ktvu.com for more on the life and legacy of steve jobs. now to tonight's other major story. a deadly workplace shooting in the south bay. at this hour, a manhunt is underway for a gunman who manage today elude authorities. the shootings took place before dawn at a limestone quarry in the hills above cupertino. an employee of lehigh cement opened fire on coworkers during a meeting. three people died, and six others were injured. the same man is expected of trying to carjack a woman a

short time later. she was also shot and wounded. here now is a photo of the suspect. the santa clairey sheriff's office identifies him as shareef allman of san jose they say he should be considered armed and dangerous. we have team coverage tonight. telling us about a switch in tactics after an unsuccessful day long search, heather. >> reporter: right now, various agencies are set up, working together to capture this gunman. they spent more than ten hours here in this residential neighborhood, searching for shareef allman. just about 90 minutes ago, they wrapped up their search here, and aren't yet willing to say what their next step will be. a neighborhood locked down, cars searched, residents led away. authorities try today track down the man suspected of shooting nine of his coworkers,

killing three of them. imply just want to get -- >> i just want to get out of here. i don't want to be home alone tonight. >> reporter: believing shareef was holed up in a house here tonight. >> i saw two shots fired. pop pop, and then after that i tried to hide. >> reporter: investigators say allman tried to hide one of the weapons used in the workplace killing, under a dumpster at a nearby gas station. the santa clara county sheriff says as of tonight, three weapons tied to the suspect have been found. but he is still armed with at least one handgun, and so far, has eluded authorities. >> we have gone house to house in the backyard. we've looked for unlocked doors, unlocked gates. we're fairly confident that he is not in the areas that we've searched. >> reporter: there has been

some activity tonight inside the command post, in fact, we watched as a s.w.a.t. team rolls out. the sheriff says they will be searching in other locations. she admits that allman could be anywhere. live tonight in sunnyvale, heather holmes. >> some of is shareef's coworkers said recently they noticed a chance in his behavior. maureen naylor has been looking into that and what triggered the shooting. >> reporter: investigators all day and tonight collected evidence from the lehigh cement plant. after they say 47-year-old shareef allman opened fire during an early morning safety meeting. >> mr. allman came into the meeting. he had a handgun, and assault rifle, and started shooting people in the meeting. >> a lot of gunfire. >> a lot of noise. >> ktvu spoke with an employee who was inside at the time. >> happened fast.

very fast. everybody was running. >> reporter: the santa clara county sheriff says three died. one coworker said he went from being talkative on monday to not looking anybody in the eye yesterday. a coworker who didn't want to appear on camera, said allman was often defensive. >> he had an attitude problem like we owe him. that's about it. not to say too much. just like a chip on his shoulder. >> reporter: for several hours, at the police barricade, family members and coworkers waited anxiously for news. >> i did get reports back that one of my members is okay. when the shooting started, he jumped out the window. >> reporter: this plant worker left covered with dirt, and still wearing protective gear. another employee left with loved ones who simply said they

were blessed. maureen naylor, ktvu, channel 2 news. schools in cupertino will be open tomorrow, even if the suspect isn't caught. the district says police are advising him to hold classes as scheduled. today schools were locked down, and parented were alerted by phone and email to keep their children home. in sunnyville, students were supposed to be released at 1:00 this afternoon, but that didn't happen. district officials weren't taking any chances. >> basically saying, do helicopters run out of gas? because they've been hovering since 8:00 a.m. >> around 4:00, police and school officials finally let is students out. similar restrictions were in place at fremont and cupertino union. mike honda said today is a somber day, and the shock will be felt for some time.

he said these events will undoubtably led to difficult questions by safety and self- prepared. it is my hope that we can address any concerns that rise together as a community once all the facts have come to light. our coverage of the story continues in five minutes, we will go live to san jose, where there was a church service for the victims. more developing news in the south bay. this time involving a missing woman. a family member says a body found today in san jose is that of 28-year-old valerie casillas. police confirmed they found a body today at sierra road and skyview drive. they're working with the coroner to make an identification. she was last seen monday

morning at 3:00 a.m. the union says sutter acted illegally when it locked out nurses after a one day strike last month. sutter said it hired replacement nurses who's contract requirements required five work days. testing moments in oakland tonight, when dozens asked the school board president what they could do to keep lake view from shutting down. currently, lake view is one of five schools the district is considering to close in an effort to save an estimated $2 million a year. a final decision is expected by the end of this month. sara palin made her decision known today. she is not going to run for president. for months now, the former alaska governor has hinted she might enter the race. palin could still have an impact on the republican

nomination. she also ruled out a third party candidacy, because she said that would assure president obama's e election. the elimination of sara palin, and new jersey governor chris christy should be good news for mitt romney, and rick perry. today, perry's campaign announced he has raised more than $17 million in his first seven weeks at candidate. the numbers for romney haven't been released, but he did raise $18 million in his first three months. the parking lot here at jubilee christian center cleared out about a half hour ago. we'll take you inside the church where the services honored one of today's members, a shooting

at 7:00 tonight, the santa clara county sheriff's department released the names of the three killed in today's shooting rampage. manuel pinon, john vallejo and mark nunez. noel walker joins us now in

san jose with how he's being remembered tonight. >> reporter: the church center here at jubilee was really about lifting up john vallejos in song, and lifting up his family and friends. they have a facebook page, all day long, they've been making posts, the most recent one about an hour ago, saying the victim was a member of the church. a stellar member. his daughter needs our prayers. tonight, there are prayers for a member of jubilee christian center who went to work and didn't come home. >> justice be served. >> i just couldn't believe it. i said wow, i was just with him last night. >> reporter: he didn't know when he saw his friend at bible class last night, it would be the last time. >> he said they look at me. but he is a very kind hearted, respectful fella. i'm sorry to lose him.

we all loved him. >> reporter: he was one of three people shot to death in a workplace rampage. his brother was wounded, they were attending a routine work safety meeting. the family and friends are in an emotional tug of war, torn for the gratefulness of survival over one loved one, and grief over the loss of another. two other families are dealing with the unthinkable too. mark nunoz was taking care of two generations. there is a hole where vallejos used to sit during worship. now there is a third victim, manuel pinon.

the church members were asking all of their members and anyone who could hear them to lift up all the victims and their family and friends. so who is the suspected gunman behind today' attack, a closer look. the story is coming up at 10:30. one of california's largest gay rights groups today said it would not start a ballot campaign to try to overturn proposition 8. it's an amendment to the california constitution passed by voters in 2008. the group said instead of a ballot measure, it will focus instead on public education. the sea lion that wandered across highway 101 in burlingame was put to rest

today. it was suffered from toxic poisoning in addition to a gunshot wound. so far this year, the center has treated six. and not one has survived. looking for teenager offenders who escaped from a detention center in contra costa county. two teenagers jumped over a fence at the detention facility about 7:00 last night. authorities say a car was waiting for them on bixler road. four teens who walked away from the same detention center last month were captured within three days. the so-called occupy wall street demonstration gained momentum today. today was the 19th day. the transit union workers were among those taking part. demonstrators say they're encouraged by the number of people across the country who are olding their own similar actions l -- holding their own similar actions. the marchers came from all

walks of life, including one who works in the exact industry that's taking much of the blame for all of our economic problems. >> reporter: within 700 protesters marched through downtown san francisco and the financial district. among those here were students. folks with jobs and those without them. their grievances vary. >> i'm concerned about gas prices. >> i'm here because of layoffs. >> reporter: a small movement is gathering steam on social networks. >> the banks have taken advantage of the bailout and i think that the 99% of us being allowed to suffer and that the government is being held captive. >> reporter: we found attorneys, labors, even a financial adviser. >> i've been disturbed by the amount of influence the lobbyists have on writing legislation, to where now i feel it's very extreme. >> reporter: the protesters

offer no clear solution. the general theme is that the system is geared toward the wealthy. [ inaudible ] wells-fargo for a comment. we received a at the same time saying we are committed to helping those facing hardships find financial solutions. onto storm watch now, a debris clogged storm drain is blamed for a house fire. a spokesman said they found 6 to 8 inches of water at the front door, and the same in a downstairs unit. firefighters used sump pumps and water vacuums to remove

most of the water that found its way into the home from a plugged street drain. the rain caused a lot of little problems before sunrise, making the early commute touch and go for drivers in san francisco. a utility pole caught fire near cambridge and sweeney streets. this early rain, impressive as that system went through yesterday it left us with pretty impressive rainfall totals. in marin county, nearing an inch and a half. toward kentfield, up to a half inch. strong cells up around the sutter river canyon. a winter storm warning in effect for the yosemite area. as we go through the next 24 hours, we're looking for some of these weak areas of rain to move through tomorrow morning, and then again tomorrow afternoon.

the death of steve jobs brought crowds to the apple store at union station today. >> reporter: people we've talked to say they've been overwhelmed once they got the news that the death of steve jobs. fans of the apple cofounder have created this memorial outside the apple story san francisco. they've been here all night, writing notes, lighting candles, and remembering his life. people wrote personal messages to a man who changed the world. they both brought bouquets of flowers to honor steve jobs. >> i just was really impressed with how much he gave of himself towards his work, despite his condition. up until, as far as we could tell, the last days. that's just an incredible example. >> seemed like the right thing to do, which is very true for someone who had so much impact

on so many of us. >> as this impromptu memorial gathered, so did the crowd, gathering around to snap photos, of course with their iphones. apple fans came here to grieve. this woman, visiting from germany wrote down her favorite jobs quote. stay hungry, stay foolish. >> he might have been foolish, but he was always hungry, and he always went on, and he created something beautiful and we won't forget. >> reporter: the executive editor of c net says jobs was a visionary, and a one of a kind salesman. >> there will not be another leader like steve jobs for another generation, or who knows how long. they can carry out his plan for the next couple of years, but after that, it will be a different company. >> reporter: jobs had been sick for some time, and many of his families are now hoping he's found some peace. >> in a way, it's kind of a relief to have him maybe lay down after doing so much.

let him rest. >> reporter: jobs stepped down as apple's ceo back in august. his health failing, and he was battling pancreatic cancer. people we talked to out here tonight, believe jobs lasting legacy will be the innovative products he brought us. ktvu, channel 2 news. more details now on jobs innovations. he founded apple in 1976, with steve wozniak. in 1984, the macintosh was released. jobs resigned the following year. by 2001, he was back at the helm, and the first ipod went on sale. in 2007, apple released the iphone. then last year, apple unveiled its tablet computer, the ipad. >> the online contributes to steve jobs keep growing by the hour. people are mourning the passing of the man behind so many of their favorite gadgets and

thanking him for his innovations. he received an invitation to deliver the commencement at stanford. he said the stanford event was the closest he had ever been to a college graduation. that day he told the graduates not to settle. >> the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work, and the only way to do great work is to love what you do. >> at that time, jobs had already been diagnosed with cancer. he said not to waste it living someone else's life. >> we contacted apple cofounder steve wozniak earlier tonight. he said he wasn't ready to comment then, but he has since commitmented. he said his high school friend looked ill, when he last saw him about three months ago. authorities are using all

years. authorities drove away with other family members, since about 8:00 this morning. >> did police say anything when they walked up? >> they asked about mr. allman and she said that's my dad she looked terrified and scared. >> reporter: deputies kept the daughter inside, apparently thinking allman might try to escape in her car. but officers apparently put a spike strip under the wrong car, flattening a neighbor's tire. >> on the back it says this device is only to be used by law enforcement. >> reporter: neighbors and friends said allman, the alleged gunman didn't fit the antiviolence man they know. >> it hurts to see somebody you like, a good person that helps other people, all of a sudden, stuff like this happens. >> how did your daughter react? >> she cried. >> reporter: one said the only

complaint he heard was that his day shift had been changed to an overnight shift. in san jose, rita williams, san jose, ktvu, channel 2 news. >> god didn't give you all that you got, for you to be yelling. >> people at the create tv's public access channel 15 say they can't reconcile the man they know with the man accused in today's shooting. >> he would get people together in the room that wouldn't normally be talking to each other and help facilitate a conversation. this is just so, so out of character for the person that we knew. >> allman has hosted a show for the last three years. the station says he's already taped a show that is set to run on friday. at this point, they haven't decided whether it will air. ktvu's comments of today's shooting, we posted the raw

interview with one eyewitness, who describes the keen and how the gunman got away. you can find that under the quarry shooting tab. homicide suspect, aaron vassler died of several gunshot wounds. the 35-year-old suspect was shot seven times in the upper torso. he was wanted for the killings of two men. authorities spent more than a month searching for him. yahoo stock soared today among word that microsoft is considering buying it. microsoft isn't commenting. three years ago, yahoo declined a microsoft offer to buy it for $33 a share. the dow finished up 131 points. nasdaq rose 55.

private companies added 91,000 jobs last month, beating wall street's expectations. tonight, uc berkely is offering free vaccines for students after the biggest outbreak of mumps in decades. why even those who have already been vaccinated may still be at risk. >> far more cases now in berkely, than all the last 20 years combined. experts say this days old outbreak is just beginning. so far, all are students. >> wash your hands more often. and just, also, a lot of people don't know what it is. it hasn't been around so long. >> reporter: rarely life- threatening, there is no good treatment. >> we do expect it to continue to spread, and in fact, we're seeing more possible cases each day. >> reporter: the outbreak apparently began in campus residence halls. two of the first cases, roommates here. the virus is spread through

saliva, often by sharing drinks. >> i don't share my food as much, but it's kind of, you're always with people, so it's hard not to. >> reporter: at least three residence halls now have cases. not enough, saying city health officer janet berryman. we've learned all the cases were in young people who were fully vaccinated with the recommended doses. studies show the mumps part of the vaccine is only about 80% effective. >> we are recommending a third dose for people in the uc community here. i think it's way too early in this outbreak for me to tell how long it's going to lastk but i think we're going to be paying attention to it for the next couple of months. a new federal study indicates the daughters of women who are given the drug des to prevent miscarriage face a higher risk of breast cancer

home, when he apparently hit the gas, instead of the brake and drove through a house. building inspectors are trying to determine if that building is still structural. safe. in los angeles, prosecutors in the involuntary manslaughter trial of dr. conrad murray played more of that auto recording of a slurring michael jackson. that was jackson saying how much he cares about sick children, and how he planned to create a children's hospital for them. a transcript was displayed to help jurors. dr.murray recorded it on his phone six weeks before jackson died. prosecutors played part of that tape during opening statements today they played the full recording. they show the doctor knowingly gave jackson the powerful drug

that ultimately killed him. we have received several calls into the ktvu newsroom tonight about a large flame at a refinery in martinez. we have checked, and it is the vallejo refinery. still the flare has been visible for much of the day. in news of the world in greece. thousands of civil servants went on strike today. they're angry about austerity measures. greece is struggling to avoid a default that could send catastrophic ripples through the economy. authorities said martin manalla was trying to revive

the gang. la familia was like a cult. claiming they only sold drugs and didn't use them. in italy, unveiled the world's cheapest hand held computer. the touch screen tablet will sell for only $35. a group of students was the first to get them. officials in india hope to provide digital access. dan shec kman received the noble prize. they sited his discovery of quasi crystals. other scientists had dismessed his group, and he was kicked out of his research group. the sierra looks completely

the first storm of the season brought more snow to the sierra. ski resorts could soon be open for business. >> reporter: where i'm walking now, at this time yesterday the ground was soaking wet. there wasn't a bit of snow, now look at, it we have about a foot of snow on the ground all from one night, from one early october storm. caltrans kept the road mostly clear of snow. snow that was coming down heavy at times. even where the snow had not

fallen, there were problems. >> people need to realize, this is the first storm of the year. a lot of oil on the road, which makes it really slippery. >> reporter: the chp says the driver of this pickup, and his passenger suffered minor injuries. >> for whatever reason, the gentleman panicked. >> reporter: narrows the highway to just one lane. once past the construction and near the summit, drivers can take in quite a sight, mountains covered in snow. >> it's great to get the ground covered and get people excited. >> reporter: it received close to a foot of snow overnight, a good omen for a ski area that typically opens first in late october. soon, they will fire up the snow machines and try to add to what nature brought last night. >> looks like we'll be able to test it out in the next couple of nights here, and see where

it gets us. >> reporter: the mountain is covered from top to bottom with snow. with warmer temperatures, most of this will be gone in a few days. but there may be some left behind. maybe just enough to start working on that base for skiers for the winter ahead. ktvu channel 2 news. and we're drying out right now. we don't have any showers in the bay area proper. live storm 2 does have live buoy readings at the golden gate bridge. right now, west-southwest at 5 miles per hour. that's actually a west weekend. but you get the idea. we've got dry conditions out there. those dry conditions will make way for this tomorrow. this was today, but i want to give you the feel for this. this is the scattered shower. we're going to wake up with scattered hours and then clearing. tomorrow afternoon, or mid- morning, some more of that, and then we should gradually clear out. i suspect we're going to see plenty of sunshine tomorrow.

temperatures back into the 60s and 70s. this is unstable winter like weather pattern with this cool air coming in. as the sun comes out in the afternoon, there's a chance for thunder showers out in the valley. tomorrow is going to be a nicer day, but there's still a shot at showers. what that leaves, it starts to warm up. back into the 70s and low 80s as you head into your bay area weekend. it's changing around quickly. but once we get to the weekend. we have to transition through tomorrow. computer model does this. 7:00a.m. tomorrow morning, scattered showers all over the place. as for your morning commute, a little bit wet. these should just be light showers. 9:00a.m., a little heavier activity in san francisco. 10:00a.m., now it's starting to really clear out and you get an afternoon break and more showers 3:00 p.m. and gone. that's the day tomorrow. bring an umbrella.

oh, boy, they're here, the blue angels roared in to the bay area for fleet week. tomorrow, they'll begin practice runs. the weather should be great for their shows over the weekend. the annual event draws hundreds of thousands of people, but some complain that the blue angels are too noisy, and a waste of taxpayer's money.
