sports director mike ibanez here to tell us about a couple of heavy hitters in the baseball playoffs. >> we're getting closer to the world series. not since bonds, albert pujols

is right now, a man amongst boys. the cardinals are riding him along with a few other ingredients into a most incredible success story. mr.squirrel was out and the st. louis cards now just two wins shy of the world series. all four of the runs in the 1st, look at albert, just a sweet swing. like a golfer into left center field. he was 2 for 2, and they just walked him the rest of the night. why not? big night for david freese, three hits, just over corey hart in right. that's another rbi double. and the cardinals are leading only 4-3. but jason motte just blows by the brewers with a four out save. the cards go up in the series, 2-1. 4-3 winners. in detroit, the tigers have their own version of king albert. batting champion, miguel cabrera. unfortunately, he has to do more than hit. a rope to the wall in the 3rd

inning. he has got himself a two run double. the tigers, a 2-0 lead over texas. now we've got a 3-3 ballgame. delmon young, fly ball. nelson cruz, with miguel cabrera at third. looks like they brought in bengie molina to pinch run. he was out by a mile. that kept it 3-3. the tigers give up a run. and then a three-run shot by nelson cruz. that just blows it open. 7-3 the final. the rangers are up in this series, 3 games to 1. the curse buster. at least that's what the chicago cubs are hoping their new general manager theo epstein will turn out to be. the cubs haven't won a world series in 103 years. he led the previous curse plagued red sox to two titles

during his tenure in boston. mr. davis is gone of course but the raiders continue their pension for signing players who don't really pan out in another city. today, they pick up linebacker aaron curry, just two and a half years ago was seattle's fourth overall pick in the draft. didn't work out with the seahawks. the raiders give up a draft pick to get him. the raiders doing the old pump up the volume, piping in crowd noise to simulate what they'll be in for in detroit. 9 false starts in this past monday night. niners quarterback, alex smith doesn't seem all that worried about it. >> this isn't the first stadium to have noise and the first team to be going against it. how many indoor stadiums are there? how many loud outdoor stadiums are there? teams deal with it all the time. you need to prepare for it. there's no guessing about it.
12:25 am
it's going to be loud, it's going to be noisy. the lions out to their best start in a long time, they're 5- 0. a breakout suspect for joshua morgan has turned into broken down. the team placed him on injured reserve with a broken leg. that means he can't return to the active roster for the rest of the season. that's the sporting life. before we go, we want to update the developing news we're following in oakland. an amtrak train pulling into the amtrak station rear ended another train about an hour ago. heather holmes is live to tell us what she's learned. >> reporter: ken, railroad inspectors have arrived here on the scene, they're down there at the point of impact and assessing the damage. i'm told about 50 feet of track was damaged at the point of impact. next step is to separate the two trains back them up.
12:26 am
remove them off the track so they can make the repairs so that trains can begin again moving through this area. now i want to show you some video that's into our newsroom of the point of impact. as you can see, this was a pretty powerful jolt. a head on collision involving two amtrak trains. one heading from the bakersfield area, the other from los angeles. now, i've actually been down there to the point of impact. you can see one of the wheel is actually knocked off of the track. there is damage there to the concrete. still, a pretty powerful head on collision. one of the trains was stationary, while the other slammed into the front of it. all of the passengers onboard both of the trains are now off. all of those that were injured, we're told at least 18 people have either been transported, or they're simply walking off their injuries. i did speak to one woman who was taking her 29-year-old daughter to the hospital. she suffered a broken arm, in fact, her mom told me that her

daughter was at the front of the car, was thrown all the way to the back whenever these two trains collided. now again, the latest information is that inspectors are here. they're trying to figure out exactly how they can take the trains off of the track. make the repairs, and then hopefully get people on their way. a gentleman that i spoke to who had boarded the train in texas, he was on his way to sacramento, said he has been told by train officials that he could be stuck here for two days. so again, a major inconvenience. several people injured. at least 18. it appears as though the repairs are going to take some time, and it's going to be some time before any sort of trains pull through this station again. reporting live tonight here in oakland, heather holmes, ktvu, channel 2 news. thank you for trusting ktvu, channel 2 news. we will see you the next time news breaks. >> join ktvu morning news tomorrow morning at 4:30 for
