communications at san jose state university, your source for what's happening, you are watching update news. hello and welcome to update new, i'm fernando lopez. >> and i'm jena johnson. thank you for joining us. >> while the campus is coming to term windshield the violent death of two former student, police announced this week another student is responsible for their murder. and now, he too is dead. three young lives lost in what police say was a killing due to drugs. dominic live on campus with more. >> reporter: well, police responded to complaintsover a shirtless man with a gun in san jose on the morn of october 10 and the what happened next may have helped them solve the murder of two sjsu student. >> police shot and killed the shirtless man who was identified as: thisis happening

just two days after former sjsu students were shot execution style in this cottage on the 800 block of third street. at the time of the shooting police didn't know they were solving the case until they revealed the one he was carrying is the one used to shoot the two. >> the district attorney reviewed all of the evidence and they con cruded concluded in fact he was the person who murdereded it two students and if he were alive at this moment he would be facing murder charge. >> >> a student who wish today remain anonymous had a class with them and were shocked by the new. >> it was one thing to hear about it, it was a completely different thing to know the person involved in this was sitting four rows behind me the other week.

men in dark clothing approached and took his backpack. the robbery comes as crime in san jose is on the rise. >> san jose has been on the list for years, but this year at least 38 people have been killed compared today 20 in all of last year and 28 the year before. san jose police sergeant says it is difficult to pin point the cause of the increase in crimes. >> there are no very obvious patterns right now. it just appears to be a violent year. >> more than 100 police have been laid off this year in san jose. nobody seems to think there's a direct connection . it is an unpredictable number. gang-related crime could be a factor and programs to help prevent violence are needed. all the news about the recent homicide is getting to some student. >> a little more worried only because i know, i think if it

would have been last year i would have felt just the same. >> prior to this year, the highest number of homicides was back in 1997. fire broke out in dudley moorehead home tuesday morning forcing the evacuation of students. two bulletin boards -- to both a fire alarm and 911 phone call from a student. >> emergency personnel located two bulletin board that had been charred. one was on the northwest stairwell, the second well on a second floor of the dudley morehead building. >> students were able to reenter the building an hour later and no one was injured. university police are working with san jose arson to find the
