when some see transportation, jim gardener sees transformation. >> it makes me really feel good because i know what the service we are performing is needed. >> he began in 2009, a nonprofit organization that fixes bikes in cab jose's poverty stricken areas to all. free of charge. parts are donated through grants and donations and 100% of workers are volunteers. gardner will say yes to anybody. even bikes from the dumpster or creek we fix them. >> -- on a regular basis. he says he couldn't around without their help. >> basically they're superguys. if i could donate money i would. that's how good these guys are. they're a lot of help to a lot of people.

are below the poverty line, more and more people are still in need. >> thousands of people use sacred heart. middle class people struggling just to feed a family. >> especially around the holidays. he says it helped him when he was most in need. >> i have come in the past during the holidays and i was able to cook a full turkey dinner for me and my roommates. that was really cool. >> this year they hope to collect 17,000 -- and books and toys for children. just saturday, they registered 7,000 people to receive clothes, food gift frs the holiday season. they can also drop off donations at charity bends like this one. on campus, fernando lopez update news. we have amanda here. there's a bay aarea high school marching band doing big things.

what's going on with that. >> that's right. the isn't too far away from here. >> a high school is going big time. homestead high is heading to big apple to perform in front of millions of people. natalie spent some time with the band during a practice run. >> they practice here on the home turf but in less than two weeks they will play on a different field with a huge audience in one of the nation's largest parades. >> millions of viewers watched the parade and -- mighty mustang marching band has made this year's cut and is includeded in the lean upment for 22 years. >> it is huge, this is the biggest honor for band in the history of this school. >> homestead high is one of ten high schools across the u.s. chosen to perform in the parade, and students know it is a big deal. >> i feel so excited. haven't been to new york ever before.

every year, they work on a service project for a whole week. this year it is awareness for nutrition s and exercise. this is the first time they have screen on the concrete to watch attention with food per midsment you might even see students playing hopscotch about food nutrition, but the fraternity goes beyond the boundaries of san jose state to remind others about their state. >> and later in the week we are going to loss altose to help do stretches for the elderly with art arthritis and then we will walk around with them. they also have a dodge ball game. >> it is open call for aconspiring artist -- as conspiring artists, hosting a holiday art show and inviting participants. they usually show case artist

together, even if just for the moment. >> now we have the actual football game and the rest of sports. hey. >> i have lady swimming, hoops but first the football game. the spartans played idaho this past saturday in a thriller, but who came out on top. we have the story. >> reporter: the spartans return home saturday after idaho, in the first quarter it was all spar at that as they converted three turnovers. oneover the scoring plays was tyler who scampered in to put them up 20-0. the first half was going so well even the defense got in on the scoring as sacked, and at the half it was 22-10 spartans. >> but in the second half it was a completely different story, as idaho came out, score 2-g 1 unanswered point, they took a 23-2-22 lead midway through the fourth quarter and

with a little over a minute left, mat find -- for six and trims the lead to three points. the spartans had the line up for the most exciting and they recovered but the referees ruled the ball didn't go ten yards and by rule they ran out the clock to win the game. after the contest, head coach mike mcentire talked about what this meant to its team. a -- for us, i know they will bounce back and keep fighting, and a game we definitely had a chance to definitely win, and we did not win it. the span tars just -- to vandals. next week they will take the show on the road as logan in the battle with the utah state aggie, on campus, update news. san jose state's women's basketball season started out grade with an exhibition game last weekend. not only were the freshmen knew new to the court but to the whole coaching staff. they had a good when captain

stole the ball from east bay, and finished it off with a lay up with spartans leading by 7. they were ahead 42-29. they held off to the second half when rachel plowed through the defense and helped give the spartans a 20 point lead. they were excite today be back on the court. it changed a lot of thicks well and that was key in this game, generating and that was the difference in the game to gliet the last shot was made by matthews and matthew san jose state won -- coach is intense but the team needs it. >> our swim team is off to an amazing start this season, and one of the swimmers has set sites on olympic trials but qualifying hasn't been easy.

>> for the 10200 stroke. >> it is something that i have been working for for a long time and going to try in a couple of months to see what i can do. >> before last season she made the qualifying team but was disqualified for an illegal hand movement. later that day she broke her foot and was out for the rest of the season. she has returned this season as team captain with one of the best teams and is excited to get a second chance at her olympic dream. coach hopkins says her leadership is a key element in the team. first and foremost i would say leadership by example, she has an amazing work ethic, an amazing amount of focus, dedication, passion for the sport. >> they will have only a few more chances to qualify for the olympic trial and won't get the chance until -- but is doing her best to prepare herself. >> i am taking it one day at
