trying to stop an animal killer. the crime taking place at two east bay parks and what authorities are doing about it. good evening. innocent ducks and geese are the victims of this cruel crime. with many being shot and killed at city parks in concord. in the past month there have been three separate incidents. dead and injured animals have been found at new hall park and

willow pass park. new at 10:00, jeanine dela vega has more on the type of gun used and if the incidents are connected. >> reporter: heather, animal control officers believe this is happening at night or in the early morning hours here at new hall park. you can see behind me the geese are there standing on the island in the middle of the lake. officers say someone appears to be shooting them point blank in the head. now we want to warn that you some of the video you're about to see may be graphic. the lake is usually a picture of beauty but this morning, five geese found all shot dead with bullet wounds. >> that's just awful. you know? these ducks are beautiful. so, why are people doing this? >> reporter: animal control collected the bodies and started their investigation. but after they left, we found that other geese appeared to be

injured. s some were limping and this one was hobbling with blood on its feather. we called officers out to the scene. officer mike russell scanned the lake. >> i don't see him now. >> reporter: he walked the trail coming upon something he dreaded. a dead white goose laying on the island. most likely the one we saw injured earlier in the day. but it doesn't end there. russell spots a sixth dead goose in the distance. this one floating in the water. he has the grim task of collecting it. >> it's not something you ever get used to. you know. it is one of the reasons that i'm in this profession. i like to find these people. >> reporter: animal service officers found eight geese and ducks on november 9, all shot. that same day, nine geese were found shot to death in willow pass park. investigators say all appear to be shot with a pellet rifle or small caliber gun which is why they think the cases are connected. patrols have been stepped up in the area. >> we're doing everything we can to find out who it is that

alaska where protesters are risking frost bite. today a funeral for a south bay soldier. >> reporter: covered in stars and stripes, a young san jose soldier is carried into his family's church for the last time. sean walsh was killed in combat november 16 in afghanistan. two weeks later, his mother cheryl is composed but says the pain comes and goes. >> until you have lost and felt the pain of losing a child, it is a difficult thing to imagine. >> reporter: but this child had become so much more. in his quest to work as a police officer, sean volunteered as a santa clara police explorer then signed on to serve in the army national guard. he even requested police manuals to study while overseas. >> sean made the transition from teenager to young man. the energy was harnessed and sean's focus was sharpened.

into the roof. firefighters put the flames out in minutes. no one was inside at the time. now the red cross is working to help those residents. >> work that out with the landlord on how long it will take, whether they need to be in a hotel room longer or what needs to be done. we will make sure they are taken care of. >> the red cross tells us tonight two families will be in a nearby hotel for the rest weekend. oakland police are investigating a shooting this evening that sent one person to the hospital. shots rang out just after 6:00 at 35th avenue and school street. one person was wounded and taken to the hospital. his injuries were not life threatening. officers have not made any arrests yet and say the victim is not cooperating. caltrains is back to normal after two people were killed on the tracks within about an hour of each other. the first incident happened just after 11:00 this morning. officials say a train hit a person at the california avenue station in palo alto. the second incident was an hour later north of the menlo park

station. service was throw while officials investigated both scenes. chp is investigating a motorcycle crash that happened just after 12:30 a.m. the motorcyclist died at the hospital. several lanes near the freeway connector were closed for an hour. officials say no one else was involved in the crash. a 17-year-old is under arrest tonight after a deadly shooting in santa rosa. it happened around 1:30 this morning in front of the el fuente restaurant. now police say this all started as a fistfight. the suspect they say then left and came back with a handgun. shooting two men multiple times. one of those men died there at the hospital. the other is in serious condition. officers arrested the teenager near the scene. we're told another man, 23-year- old dan yelled calderon was also arrested. there are still thousands of northern california residents without power after

this wearhouse on the east end of pier 9 was transformed into a santa's work shop. volunteers spent their saturday a-- assembling 150 bikes. >> i remember getting my first bike and it is a great feeling and you know there is a lot of kids that are not fortunate enough to receive gifts, you know, this time of year. >> reporter: later this month san francisco firefighters will come pick up all the bikes you see here so they can be donated as part of the annual toy drive. volunteers who spend the time you 'king the bikes together say that is when they get to see their reward. >> see the kids' faces as we give these bikes out is very rewarding. >> reporter: they are with the bar pilot's association. people who use these boats to help cargo ships navigate the bay. they were working inside their warehouse this morning. some of their kids helped out by taking the bike force a test run. -- bikes for a test run. >> all right, go on.

academy of the fbi and earned a master's in public administration. she replaces jeff tranzini. a man in the custody of the santa clara authorities has died. the sheriff's office says the man who was arrested by police last night suffered from some kind of medical distress while being booked. paramedics were called and staff tried to revive him but he was proo announced dead at the scene. his name has not been released. a teenage girl is recovering from a crash tonight after authorities say she led officers on a high-speed chase down interstate 880. sheriff's deputies say it started when they tried to pulled over a car with a broken headlight. the car sped off and ended up down a grassy hill near the hagenberger exit. the driver was taken to the hospital hospital. male passenger was not hurt but police arrested him after they say they found illegal drugs. a former san rafael police officer says he wants his job back after being acquitted of

gun charges. 44-year-old michael augustus was found not guilty yesterday of two counts of assault with a firearm and exhibiting a weapon. augustus was accused of pulling a gun on someone while off duty last december after an argument. he was fired from the san rafael police department in may. augustus says he plans to ask for his job back. the fbi says the geezer bandit has struck again. the man who appears to be in his 60s or 70s robbed a bank of america yesterday. this is the 16th robbery blamed on that geezer. but perhaps he is a younger man wearing an elaborate mask. today president obama urged americans to call congress about extending the payroll tax cut. >> you see last year both parties came together to cut payroll taxes for the typical middle class family by about a thousand dollars. but that tax cut is set to expire at the end of this month. >> the white house has set up a calculator online for the public to see just how much people would lose if the cut is

the u.s. is calling for tighter sanctions against iran. violent clashes between police and protesters in peru have killed at least one man. the protesters have been occupying a major highway hoping to stop a local prison from expanding after they rocked a bus on the highway yesterday, police used gunfire to break up the crowd. protesters responded then by throwing rocks. one protester died from a bullet wound. 20 others were injured, including two officers. and scotland is gearing up for the arrival of two pandas. china is loaning the 8-year-old pair to the royal zoologolical society. the pandas whose names translate to sweetie and sunshine may potentially breed. britain is hoping for a panda cub all its own. the loan is a result of four years of negotiations. bargain hunters were at the state capitol for an auction of surplus state property.

that is the mission san jose high school marching band playing in this year's oakland children's holiday parade, along with several other marching bands the parade featured dancers and cheerleaders from local high schools and of course santa atop an oakland fire department rescue boat. this is the 13th year for the annual parade. winter weather is keeping drivers off the road in some parts of arizona. snow and ice as well as scattered rain showers made for a tough commute in the central part of that state. this is the third day of winter- like temperatures. transportation crews say they will be on the roads all weekend to make sure the roads are safe to drive.

here in the bay area this is the time of year we can be talking about very cold temperatures as far as low snow levels, rain and possibly snow showers here in the bay area. but that is not the case for this first weekend of december. plenty of sunshine. temperatures on the mild side once again. a few changes setting up thatly us to the next few days. right now on the maps -- i can show you this on live storm tracker 2. mostly clear skies. in fact, clear skies across the entire state. temperatures beginning to trend down. look at napa right now. 40 degrees with calm winds. but santa rosa, winds around 10 to 12 miles an hour keeping temperatures up there in the upper be 50s. santa rosa will eventually come back down to the 40s overnight. take a look at the highs from today. beautiful out towards the bay. today we cooled off most areas about 4 to 8 degrees from yesterday's readings. but still a beautiful sun set over the bay.

we have overnight lows, pretty chilly in napa to around 33 degrees. livermore at 40. concord 34 but santa rosa lower 40s and san francisco around 48 degrees. so there is a possibility those cool locations will be in the lower 30s and we could have patchy frost develop. high pressure in command of our weather. strong high pressure pushing the storm track way into our north and really not too much in the way of change over the next few days. here is one development as we take this into tomorrow. this area of low pressure will be setting up to our north and east and dropping down towards southern california. this will set up another minor wind event but as we head to sunday, more sunshine out there. winds do pick up a bit by sunday evening, into monday morning. winds could be from right around 40 to at least maybe gusting to 40 miles an hour for the highest elevations of the bay area. but probably not strong enough for a wind advisory. but this will increase fire danger. so something to keep an eye on. kind of a strange event to be talking fire danger for
