yesterday's news. tom vacar. the frenzy over those tennis shoes spread far and wide. early morning temperatures in the areas dropped in the 20s, scores of people streamed into the mall and waited for an athletic shoe store to open. in a seattle suburb a mob of people pushed and shoved into a mall. police there say they had to use pepper spray to get unruly shoe seekers under control. santa's elfs are not the only ones with busy fingers this time of year. shoplifting is up 6% from the same period last year according to the global theft barometer. theft is up because of the economic. others say people do it for the thrill or to relief depression. research suggests almost 3/4 of shoplifters said they stole on
