a chance of wind and rain. we have team coverage for you tonight. bill martin is tracking all the changes. first we go to the south bay and lloyd live at the sunnyvale -- lloyd? >> reporter: i have been watching the mercury drop and right now it's about 39 degrees. now inside these cold weather shelter here at the armory it's 68 degrees. >> came to this place because it's just like freezing outside. it's -- you know you can't sleep out there. it's to cold. >> reporter: dot math. there are some 2,000 beds for the homeless in this south bay. there are 7,000 people living on the streets. tonight a reverand tried to help people unwilling to come inside. >> we have blankets over here if you want them. okay. we will bring them to you. . >> reporter: in tents and with

campaign where there is one less contender tonight. john huntsman dropped out supported mitt romney. >> it's time for the party to unite around the candidate beste equipped to defeat obama despite our differences, and the space between us, on some of the issues. i believe that candidate is governor mitt romney. >> he placed third in new hampshire but his campaign was having problems. he called on remaining candidates to stop attacking each other and focus on the concerns of voters. the five remaining republicans squared off in a debate in south carolina tonight. a second one is set for thursday followed by saturday's key primary. craig boswell is live and says anyone took his advice and held back on attacking the front runner. >> reporter: good evening.

the italy coast guard is holding out hope of finding people but they say searching the ship has been very difficult. amateur video shows people crowded on one deck waiting to board life boats and one passenger who made it home to florida described the chaos. >> the boat was tilted on the side that we were in. there were people that actually jumped off the life boats to swim on shore because they were afraid that the boat was going to come on top of them. >> there are also serious concerns that the half million gallons of fuel still on the ship may leak in to the clearwaters. a salvage company has been fired to remove it. a smoky brush fire caught the attention of people in central contra costa. it started just before 11:30 on the bay point side of bailey road and spread uphill. road was closed for about two hours as crews battled the flames. act 40 acres burned.

the cause is under investigation though officials say the fire is known for illegal dumping. the school district nearing a major achievement. 20 years ago they got a loan from the state. now the superintendent of the school district has sent a let territory state saying can pay off the loan on february 1st. the superintendent is asking that the state release the district from oversight. >> facebook could go public in may according to a wall street blog. because of regular layings regarding investors the company is supposed to release a disclosure by the end of april. analysts suggest this would be the perfect time for them to start the process with an offering coming at the end of may. it its thought the ipo could raise up to $10 billion. >> it'll be east meets west when profoot all championship game comes to candlestick. it's new york verses san

? a leaking national gas pipeline, a construction crew damaged a one inch gas line on 45th. it was turned off about 6:20. there were no reports of injuries and no word on when the leak may be done. new at ten, less than an hour ago a search and rescue team wrapped up training at a bart station. we are live to tell you about the special team made up of highley trained dogs. >> reporter: it was really impressive to see them in action tonight. we watched at the seven dogs went through the area here all in an effort to try to find a

missing person. it's rush hour, and another packed bart train just pulledn. >> we will get ready to run. >> reporter: it's here among all the evening people that search and rescue dogs carried out tonight's training mission. >> and that's what we are looking for was all of the distractions, the cars, getting in and out of the parking garage and then having a herd of people following. >> reporter: the training group leader said it's important the dogs get familiar with all real life problems so the dog association staged different situations. one involved a man last seen at starbucks near the station. seconds after sniffing an item, gig was on his trail following the sense through the station up and the escalator. >> for a second she was like i don't want to but they did. >> reporter: last year the organization responded to 74 calls, they also helped look

for a 5-year-old on the day he was reported missing back in 2009. the group's dog teams search for survivers of the pipeline explosion in san bruno. these dogs and their handlers want to be ready. >> it's a way to make a difference and provide closure. >> reporter: bart said it receives three to four reports a week of a possible missing person and officials say they welcome this help. reporting live, heather holmes. >> reporter: a man riding his bike said he survived what he called a snipe era tack from a nearby rooftop. it happened about three this morning. the 43-year-old flagged down a train near the richmond railyard. he said someone pointed a laser at him from a rooftop and shot him in both legs. he is expected to survive. police searched the area between west ohio and west

cunning and didn't find the shooter. >> a suspicious fire chased two from their home early this morning. what are you looking at video from a firefighter's helmet as he broke through the door of the home on sarah court. a 24-year-old who had just moved in and his girlfriend both were able to get out. firefighters believe an arsonist was targeting the previous tenant. the fire caused a lot of damage and firefighters say a station closure caused another three minute delay in their response time. another fire today on the peninsula forced more than a dozen people out of their homes. started about 10:5 in redwood on east bayshore road. a spokesperson said the fire destroyed one trailer damaged two others. in all 15 people were left without a home. >> san francisco's sheriff made his first public appearance today since being

hackers got customer's names, addresses, phone numbers and the last four digits of their credit cards. they said its cooperating trying to find the hacker. they say it's the largest cyber shoe store and is own bid amazon. >> new, a high end store wants to go home again but it's success may prevent it. all this is happening in sonoma where a city council map is trying to stop chain stores just as williamson man is trying to return to its roots. we have live in sonoma where we found a city divided. >> reporter: this shop is the first home of williamson man when it first opened. this picture over here shows what it looked like then. now the company wants to set up shop here again but it's not a sure thing. have are more than 2350 stores nationwide selling upscale items for the kitchen. the founder named the company

tonight. we go behind the scenes and meet real life characters. >> march 21, 1963, alcatraz closed. >> reporter: when the new thriller filmed its pilot at the prison it was the first visit to the rock for some of the show's stars. >> i had never been there before. when i came here i was -- i was a bit -- almost mesmerized. >> it is a creepy, strange place. >> reporter: in the show, 302 prisoners and guards disappeared in 1963 and suddenly start reappearing on the streets of present day san francisco. while the show takes the prison down a path of mystery we found men with real life experience. >> just 21. it was a very tough experience

. we are learning new details about a veteran arrested for killing four homeless men. he is charged, scheduled to be charged with four counts of murder. his family said he returned from iraq a changed man, and he was struggling civilian life. his father is also homeless and lives in a vehicle. said his son warned him act the dangers of being on the street just days before his arrest. police are reopening a 30 year old homicide case to see if it's linked to an accused

serial killer. he is charged with killing four women in the 70s and 90s. at his hearing investigators testified about finding a journal listing and describing ten women including a girl near hills bug. they want to know if it refers to a woman who was found there in the early 80s. >> we still have the evidence from that case in addition -- the body's condition was in good shape. >> the woman's body has been exhumanned and police say they are in the process of doing dna tests. the pretrial hearing resumes tomorrow. >> in news of the world in yemen militants have taken control of a town now 100 miles south of the capitol. they stormed a local prison and freed 150 inmates. the group appears to be taking advantage of the political

turmoil that's persisted there. in iran authorities say several suspects have been arrested for the killing of a nuclear sciencist last week. he died in an explosion after two people attached a bomb to his car using a magnet. iran has accused the united states, britain and israel of being involved. the white house has denied any role. london condemned the killings, israel has had no comment. in england an old campbell soup factory was demolished. a woman whose father was killed there seven years ago pressed the buton to bring it down. she said it provided some closure for her and her family. a new building will be built in its place. >> jp morgan chase is foreclosing on oj simpson but is having trouble serving the papers. they started proceedings on his miami home last fall. however he hasn't been living

as john fowler says we had the only news camera at the bridge today when one family took matters into their own hands. >> reporter: many visitors here in tears, late this afternoon joe from modesto with a hammer to get the brick he had done for his wife. >> eternal love, okay? that was my 10th anniversary >> we will kick them off. it's trespassing. there are no individual bricks being give ebben back. >> reporter: people bought them 25 years ago to raise money for the bridge anniversary. they found from the news they were to be removed destroyed. this brick honors mary's grandfather who helped build the bridge. >> we paid for it. >> reporter: dan showed us the letter promising his bricks at $75 each would be here forever. >> i think that the bricks should be given to us.

we talked to a visitors to twin lakes in santa cruz who remembered a time when maintenance was stopped. >> it was a mess. it was -- a lot of homeless and you know nobody cleaning up the beaches. >> we need taxes to provide for the state parks, schools, higher many indication, our police and fire. >> some park have within rescued by private groups but others say that will encourage the state to abandon parks. >> wikipedia will go off line temporarily on wednesday this are one of several sites protesting anti piracy legislation. critics say the stop -- about will allow site shut downs without due process if it's determined any content was misappropriated. they say they will be unavailable for 24 hours start midnight january 18th.

a company from hong kong stopped production of a steve jobs action figure. they say it was a tribute to him. after threats of legal action by apple and the job's family the company is now abandoning the project. any money for preorders will be returned. and burger king testing out home delivery of items, so far it's limited to just four restaurants in the washington dc area. there is a two dollar fee and the minimum order ranges eight to ten dollars. customers also have to live with in a ten minute drive of the store. >> and again that freeze warning in effect tonight and for most of the bay area basically the urban centers, santa clara, and -- the vallejo north bay section. so it's going to be cold. you know that, almost a hard freeze in many of the valleys. that just mains below freezing

neighborhood. ken wayne lived and is -- is live with the latest from pg&e. >> reporter: we are at corner of jackson, you look down the street and that is where the action is. it's at pr, sidio and pacific avenue is where this explosion happened. pg&e is on the scene. they say this happened at 10:06. they are still working ont. 332 customers are without power and that members mean some of the street lights are not working. i talked to a woman who said she was walking her dogs on pacific when there was an explosion and fire came out of what apparently was a utility cover on the sidewalk. it was not in the street the according to this woman. she said it scared her to death and she is still shaken up. she doesn't know what happened. pg&e is still trying to figure out what happened. i talked to one worker who was here and he said it could be a couple of hours at least before they are able to get power back in this neighborhood.
