outside this macy's cosmetics counter, and many were surprised. 400 tubes of lipstick from drugstores to department stores were tested and the lab found lead in virtually every one. >> i feel like it's a part of my lips. >> reporter: lipstick is personal. this shopper pulls out her current favorite. >> it stays on forever and you can get them at any drugstore. >> reporter: happy to hear her inexpensive brand tests with less lead. >> reporter: the fda says it is detected if trace amounts. unlike candy, or toys, there are no regulations for lead in makeup. health and consumer groups have been trying for years to get limits set, and nudge women

away from conventional formulas, and toward chemical free cosmetics. >> you know, err on the side of precaution, because you can. >> reporter: and they say, bewarey letting children play with makeup. the new study shows 7 of the top 10 contaminated lipsticks come from the dominant brands. this 13-year-old doesn't wear makeup yet, but when she cuss, will choose carefully. >> i don't think we really do enough investigation about the things that we put on our body. >> reporter: it's impossible to tell by looking if lipstick is leaded, or unleaded, like this one. but it may be a question worth asking. >> i don't want to eat lead, so absolutely. >> reporter: lead levels were all over the map. a pink shade like this one had

almost 300 times as much lead as the least tainted tube. ktvu channel 2 news. >> we have posted a link to the fda's full report on the lead in lipstick at ktvu.com. you when check out the brands andtivity -- can check out the brands and the test results. there are concerns tonight about a potential outbreak of mumps at the san mateo county jail. for now, it means no visitors. health officials are waiting for test results to see if in fact it is the mumps that is making the inmates ill. right now, 125 of them have been isolated. the district attorney says at least 7 court cases have been rescheduled this week, because the inmates are not allowed to leave the jail. we have continuing coverage tonight on the search for human remains in the central valley. investigators say they've

reached the bottom of an abandoned well now that a convicted killer says was used as a mass grave. investigators are about to begin a new phase of the recovery effort. amber? >> reporter: frank, authorities plan to lower a camera into the abandoned well to make sure they didn't miss anything during their search. their next step? deciding whether to excavate a second abandoned well here at this site. investigators say the digging may be near an end. but the work is just beginning. scott smith, reporter for the record newspaper in stockton showed us the letter and two hand drawn maps that a death row inmate sent him. it contained details on where he buried buried chevy

wheeler. this came after six years of correspondence between the journalist and an inmate. authorities allowed him into the excavation site. >> it was absolutely the most horrific thing i've ever seen. it made me want to weep. >> reporter: smith says he wanted to help the victim's family find peace. in modesto, eva and her granddaughter are hoping the excavations will answer their questions about a missing loved one. 34-year-old sylvia stanley disappeared in 1986. >> i was just a baby when she disappeared, i don't remember her at all. >> reporter: smith says he was motivated to reveal because he didn't want herzog to go free. he killed himself last month after learning of the revelations. >> you gave up the information hoping that could lead to a

quote, drag on for years. san francisco police are looking for a man suspected of trying to kidnap an 8-year-old girl, as she was walking to school on monday. police created a sketch resembling the man. she was walking to carver elementary. officers describe the suspect as an african american in his mid-30s, with short dreadlock style braids. a second person is under arrest in connection with a home explosion in san francisco that severely injured a is it- year-old boy. it happened last week on capitol avenue. plus say drugs were made in the home when a butane cylinder exploded. police say officers arrested 26- year-old thomas weed yesterday. he will face similar drug and child endangerment charges. a minor earthquake struck

little further south that we can demolish a portion on the north side. >> reporter: the prep work and supplies are on that new section of roadway, where we couldn't stop. it starts friday at 8:00 p.m.k and is scheduled to continue until crews finish. >> this is paving, striping. >> reporter: unlike previous closures, this isn't about moving a huge section of a bridge into place. but it will still shut down all the westbound lanes for four days. >> it's a headache. >> reporter: at a gas station in emeryville, drivers expressed some frustration, but said they will find alternatives. >> since it's my own business, i just won't head that way for a while. >> reporter: caltran officials who have done four single deck, or full bridge closures in the past say they expect little serious impact this weekend. >> in the previous closures,

there have been high volumes of congestion, people have been resilient in finding ways to get around the closures. >> reporter: caltran says the forecast looks good. john sasaki, ktvu, channel 2 news. more details now on the timetable. the closure is set to begin at 8:00 friday night. the upper deck will be closed all cay saturday, sunday, and monday. the plan is to have the westbound lanes reopen by 5:00 on tuesday morning. bart detailed how it plans to help people get around this weekend, while the upper deck is shut down. essentially what bart is doing, is planning extended service, and it should be a major resource for people trying to get back and forth from the east bay to san francisco. typically, bart service ends just after midnight. this weekend, some lines will be running 24 hours a day. what we've done here is put together a map for you, detailing the exact stations that will be affected.

tonight, we've obtained security video of an accident that left a pedestrian badly injured. you may find this video hard to watch. it shows a shuttle bus, hitting a man carrying a large bag. he was pinned under the bus until firefighters were able to free him. police say the victim suffered several broken bonus. they also call it an accident, and don't plan to charge the driver. all of this happened yesterday afternoon. new at 10:00, one a day. that's how many bikes are reported stolen in one san

francisco neighborhood. ktvu's heather holmes is live now in the city's mission district with what officers are doing to go after the bold bike thieves. >> reporter: take a recent incident here. this is not exactly a dimly lit alley. this is busy mission street, with a bus stop, there's a walgreens right here. you know what? none of that seemed to matter to a guy who actually came up here and stole a bike that was secured right here to this rack. watch as the man successfully gets through the lock and rides away on someone else's wheels, all in less than 30 seconds. >> i think it's, you know, pretty rampant. >> reporter: bike thefts are a continuing problem in san francisco. especially in the mission district. >> i try my best, but i had a bike stolen. >> reporter: he's not alone. last month in the mission, 31 bikes were reported stolen, with an estimated total value of $40,000. in the first eight days of this month, there have been 15.

that's nearly two a day. totaling $18,000. >> we're really trying to employ a multifaceted approach. >> reporter: that includes, posting videos online of thieves in the act. scouring ads on craigslist. and putting pictures of the increasing number of stolen bikes on the police station's website. in an effort to generate leads, and sometimes it works. >> we've recovered these and were actively attempting to locate the owners. >> reporter: the bikes were recently found in the bay view, while police expand their efforts to catch those stealing. >> i've sealed the wheels on with special bolts that you need a unique key to unlock. >> i tried to use a you lock instead of the cable lock and i also don't ride my nicest bike around town. >> reporter: police say these are some of the known faces of the known bike thieves in the mission. i want to give you one more look at a man suspected of

swiping that bike here on mission street. if you recognize him, give police a call. reporting live tonight here in san francisco, heather holmes, ktvu, channel 2 news. st. joseph health system has notified more than 6,000 patients in sonoma county that their personal information has been compromised. the data was made public through outside search engines. it operates santa rosa hospital, the information included patients names, and lab results. most of the patients were treated between february and august of last year. the department of consumer affairs has shut down the oakland and san francisco campuses of the institute of medicine. the state says the school deceived students by telling them it was accredited. the dca also says the school is facing severe financial problems. school leaders say they may sue

the state to try to keep the campuses open. the mayor of san bruno and some residents are accusing pg and e of dragging its feet. they're in talks to have pg and e pay for community enhancements. >> the gas and electric company is stalling to settle millions of dollars in restitution to the community will. >> a pg and e vice president we spoke with today denied there was any delay, saying the negotiations on the matter of scheduled later this week. president obama is set to visit the bay area for a series of fundraisers tomorrow. the price of admissions runs the gamut from $100, all the way to up tens of thousands of dollars per ticket. she's been with the boys and girl's club of san francisco for seven years.

a sacramento couple was found today alive, but suffering from frost bite after being lost in the sierras since sunday. they were driving in a remote area near lake tahoe when their car got stuck in the snow. friends had been searching for the couple, not far from where they had been wine tasting. the couple had gotten loss between georgetown and hell hole reservoir. a man is under arrest for allegedly breaking into homes, then stealing a police car and leading police officers on a chase. it all started yesterday morning with a day long string of home invasion robberies and carjackings. >> he dragged me into the

kitchen. >> reporter: lori describes how she fought back against suspect edgar james who kicked down her front door yesterday morning. >> i pushed the door back and he kicked it in more, and then that's when he grabbed me. >> he had me in a choke-hold. pretty much the whole entire time. asking for money. >> reporter: james's one day spree of carjacking and home invasion robberies involved multiple victims. >> this one single mark here is where he was accelerating to get away up the hill. the odd thing about it is he came back to the neighborhood. >> reporter: residents were relieved to hear james was arrested last night. >> we just got the tip he was in our city. >> reporter: as richmond police closed in on the suspect's hideout, he saw opportunity in an unlocked patrol car. >> the suspect jumped into the police car and began to flee

the officer fired a couple of shots into the vehicle. >> reporter: that triggered a high speed chase, which ended the driveway. there are also broken off pieces of patrol car everywhere. the suspect was tased by police. they say he appeared ready for a fight. police say the suspect has a lengthy criminal history, and will now likely face a slough of new charges, ranging from robbery, to assaulting an officer. in richmond, patty lee, ktvu, channel 2 news. pg and e says a large number of santa cruz county residents have asked to opt-out of using those smart meters. pg and e has received a total of 4400 requests. 706 are from santa cruz county marin county has 450 to date. alameda county has 283. pg and e has estimated that in the end, up to 150,000

a $316,000 award to settle claims of wage theft and worker abuse. the chinese progressive association credits the large settlement to the workers speaking out, as well as state agencies and local groups standing forcefully behind them. the former employees said they were paid below minimum wage, not given tips and not allowed proper breaks. >> my coworkers are very worried, because they were scared that without a job, they would not be able to support their families. i explained to them, these are rights protected by the law. >> some employees said they worked 12 hours a day, for as little as $65 a day. the owners of the restaurants ask not return calls from ktvu. the stock market had its worst day of the year so far. the dow jones ended down 97 points. the nasdaq dropped 16.

kellogg made a deal today to buy pringles from proctor and gamble after plans from diamond foods of san francisco fell through. the pringle acquisition is worth $2.7 billion. diamond foods is undergoing a major shakeup because of fiscal irregular lairties. apple is going after eastman kodak in court even though it filed for bankruptcy last month. apple says kodak improperly used patents in some of kodak digital products. kodak has a lawsuit against apple. the two companies did collaborate back in the '90s. oakland is looking to the past. the idea is to bring back streetcars. there have been two similar studies in the past. the city wants to make it easier to go from jacklanded

tonight after an air force talonjen went off the runway. the incident happened as the pilots were practicing so- called touch and goes. the 2c jet was on a flight out of marysville. there was only minor damage to the aircraft. southwest announced it is raising fares on certain routes. american airlines followed suit, other airlines are expected to do the same. a southwest spokesperson said operating costs and the cost of jet fuel are what prompted that fare hike. a program that allows pilots to go through special security lanes is being expanded now to more airports. it's called the known crew member program and it allows pilots who have already provided the tsa with background information to pass through the check points if they're in uniform and have proper id. those involved in the project say it will speed up security

for everyone. in news of the world. honduras, a fire at an overcrowded jail left 358 prisoners dead. one official blamed an inmate for starting that fire. firefighters say they were delayed because they didn't have keys and couldn't find the guards who had them. the fire is the deadliest prison fire anywhere in the world in the past 100 years. in iran -- the u.s. as iran is developing a nuclear weapon. in peru, a land slide blocked the road to the ruins.

to come up into the 60s. might even see upper 60s, so a warm front as high pressure takes back the area that is basically dominated off the coast of california. the frost in the morning, that will slow you down. so you get up in the morning, you have to warm the car up, scrape the windshields, you will notice temperatures starting off in the 30s. they're going to end up, at the end of the day in the 60s. so warmer than it happen. friday, this system comes in, not going to do much. it will increase the clouds, and a chance of a sprinkle. this is not what you expect this time of year, you expect the storms to have a little bit of juice and they really don't. computer model lays out like this. there's friday, right? you get into friday, light night and early saturday morning. that's it. you get into saturday afternoon, something going on in the mountains, saturday morning in the mountains. we get snow up there, and then saturday afternoon. it's just sort of a nonevent. as we head into sunday, a few
