from a first hand account. she spoke with the mother and daughter who say they saw the gunman. >> reporter: the mother telling me, she had just checked out her 11-year-old daughter from the after school program here at east avenue middle school around 4:30 when she says she saw a man in the hallway with a rifle. emotional embraces tonight between students and their parents after fears of a gun man on campus. >> it was a very scary moment. i saw the guy walking out of school, with like a rifle. >> reporter: in a panic, maria immediately notified the supervisor of the after school program who called 911. >> just the thought of what could have happened. >> reporter: the school was locked down with afaro, her daughter and the remaining 16 students kept in one classroom. livermore police raced to the

of oakland tonight. they distributed fliers, calling on people to bury their inner capitalist, and embrace justice and love. we're back on storm watch tonight. the winter storm that moved through the bay area is still active in the high sierra, where it continues to dump a lot of much needed snow. we have team coverage this evening. bill martin is tracking the winter storm warning, and lingering showers in the bay area. we begin with the show crawl over the mountain passes, and ktvu's ken pritchett, live over i-80 in blue canyon. >> reporter: it may be difficult to see on camera, but we do have just a little bit of snow coming down. we are here at blue canyon. i want to show you how much snow we have here. it's about a foot. a foot and a half of powder here. this area right here has not been plowed, so it's a good representation of how much snow we've had in the past day. there's been a lot of plow

activity on the interstate. we found one driver who had been stuck for about two hours. the wheel would do nothing but spin. victor ray was headed down on a turn. >> i had lost control, because he lost control in front of me, except i had to dodge a semi. that's how i ended up in the enbankment. >> reporter: he was buried deep. a good samaritan pulled over to lend a hand. >> you think about it, and you go back and help them. >> reporter: they were not the only ones struggling on this night. this car plowed into a pole. it was a day of spinouts on i- 80. >> just a little problem sparking up here, and we get them on their way. the snow banks are helping, big time. >> reporter: despite the snow piling up, and very strong winds, caltrans managed to keep

interstate 80 open. chain controls were in the effect all day. trucks required to carry maximum chains. eventual victor was able to pull free. they were on their way on a slow ride to the bay area. >> i'm going to be grandmother driving with my lights on. >> reporter: if you look over to my right, you can see westbound interstate 80 right here. it is covered in snow. not much snow on there right now. this has been recently employeed. the train controls are in effect from the baxter exit over to truckee. you can expect difficult riding tonight and through much of tomorrow. all of that new snow

prompted with high winds, prompted an avalanche warning today. gene is a member of the alpine ski patrol. he was out there looking for problem areas. >> in the morning, this will be loaded up again, we'll come through and either do ski cutting, or use explosives to release the avalanches from the small pockets. >> reporter: the avalanche center says the danger for avalanches right now is greatest on slopes that are facing north, that are 35 degrees or steeper. skiers are also advised to stay clear of back country terrain. ♪ [ music ] we got our rain around here. they're getting their snow in the mountains. take a look at live stormtracker 2. right now, the next round of showers coming down from the north. we're going to talk about that in a bit. but the sierra nevada is the story right now. up to 3 feet of snow, and there's more on the way. as we mentioned, of course it's a winter storm warning up there.

it's extended until 4:00 tomorrow. the snow levels are kind of low. you heard ken mention chains on 80. that is the case. they're chaining up on 50 as well. chaining up west of keiver at 4,000 feet. more rain showers here. when i come back i'm going to show you how far that rain has made it south. the rain that fell in the bay area in the last 24 hours is what local water agencies say they need. in the north bay, san rafael received more than an inch. concord saw a half inch of rain. on the peninsula, redwood city received .46. the largest total was up in the santa cruz mountains, 1.77 inches at ben lowman. the storm also caused damage in the mountains. pg and e crews replaced a power pole that snapped in half.

last saw her daughter alive. >> to put it above my mantle. >> reporter: paula wheeler told us, this photo would be placed near the urn containing her daughter's remains, back in their family home, now in tennessee. tonight, friends and family members have gathered in preparation for a private memorial tomorrow. wheeler says she never thought she would get her daughter's remains back. >> feels great. >> reporter: chevy disappeared in 1985. her mother dropped her off at school, but chevy cut class and was last seen with wesley chermantine. >> i want to really get her for skipping school. that last time she said she wasn't going to. and then i'm just going to love her to pieces. >> reporter: he was convicted of her murder and many others.

prosecution. the attorney for mirkarimi's wife wanted the judge to dismiss statements that lopez made to a neighbor. arguing for attorney client privilege. >> she went to her as an attorney, she could have gone to anybody. she could have gone to anybody. she wasn't going about domestic violence. >> she said she went to the neighbors to discuss child custody. the judge also ruled that a video of lopez appearing upset and showing a bruise is admissible as evidence. canny is asking an appeal's court to intervene. jury selection begins monday. we'll have to wait for sunrise to know the full extent of the destruction from a new series of deadly storms that are pounding the midwest and the southeast tonight. at least three people were killed in tennessee tonight from a tornado. nine others died this morning when tornadoes slammed into parts of illinois and missouri. two tornadoes were also

reported tonight near hodgeenville, kentucky. and 100 mile-an-hour winds have roared through northeastern alabama over the past few hours. the worst damage occurred this morning in harrisburg, illinois. where six people died, and at least 300 homes were destroyed. rescue crews spent the day searching for victims and making makeshift repairs to homes. the resort town of branson, missouri was also hit overnight. in six minutes, tracking debris from last year's sue mommy in japan. where it's expected to reach, and when we could see it here in the bay area. a stolen trailer means no go for a south bay go-cart company. what was inside the trailer? looks like we're going to see more rain just in time for your drive. back here in ten. a major

wouldn't speculate if their injures were life-threatening, but he did say he was worried for them. new at 10:00, a daring and unusual theft at a go-cart company in the south bay. the owner's entire mobile trailer with thousands and thousands of dollars worth of equipment inside was stolen overnight. >> reporter: this is cambrian go-carts. police believe a truck was pulling a trailer out of this parking lot. >> the trailer was right here. the chalks were yanked from underneath it. cord unplugged. it went left. >> reporter: left and gone. a 30-foot long 18,000-pound trailer with two side doors that go up like a concession stand. it was wrapped with the words

of the debris field will reach the northwest hawaiian islands. as you can see here, it's only days away from the midway islands of u.s. territory. >> this tsunami debris is a tragic event. >> reporter: researchers believe much of the up to 8 million tons of debris sank off of japan's coast. that 1 or 2 million tons remain. but are dispursed over a wide area. here, a computer model shows how in almost one year the debris field has moved across the pacific ocean from japan to hawaii. that's about 3800 miles. twice the distance from san francisco to chicago. researchers say a small amount of what's left of the debris could make it here to the west coast next year, or early 2014. but mainly north of here from alaska to oregon. in san francisco, rita williams, ktvu, channel 2 news.

jones was only 5'3", but a huge heart throb to millions of fans. they sang songs written by professional songwriters such as carol king. in 1971, jones played himself on the brady bunch, meeting marsha brady. his last show was just a week ago sunday in oklahoma. jones died this morning at his florida ranch from a massive heart attack. in tonight's special report, a major shift is likely coming to all of the bay area's toll bridges. for 85 years now, drivers have been stopping to pay toll takers, but it appears that is about to change, and soon. >> reporter: bay area drivers started paying bridge tolls in may of 1927. early press reports say toll takers actually had enough time to have conversations with drivers. one got into a bit of an

argument with president herbert hoover. but those days are gone. now the last of the toll takers is in sight. >> we're saving a lot of money. right now the projections are, we'll save about $16 million over 10 years. >> reporter: those without fast track, cameras will capture license plates, and bills will be sent to your home or office. there may also be other options to pay. all of this is scheduled to take place on the golden gate bridge one year from now. that has big ramifications on other bridges. officials say the commute will likely be faster with no stopping to pay a human toll taker. >> the goal is to have the most efficient system that we can have. >> reporter: the bay area toll authority, when pressed for a

the hercules city country has engaged in an emergency effort. next week seven more city employees will get pink slips. yesterday's declaration of a fiscal emergency allows a simple majority vote to raise taxes. they're facing a $1.5 million budget deficit. california homeowners could be in line for protections. a plan for a homeowner bill of rights. this goes beyond the foreclosure settlement reached earlier this month. it's designed to bar some of the practices that contributed to a half million foreclosures

statewide since 2008. a ktvu field pole has found one thing that california's democrats and republicans agree on. they don't think much of congress. the poll shows 83% of californians disapprove of the b congress is doing. only 12% approve. 5% had no opinion. the negative numbers hold steady among republicans, democrats and independents. the ktvu field poll also asked if the white house and congress should be controlled by the same political party. 37% would like the president's party to control congress. 33% said one party should control each. and 14% said it depends. in news of the world tonight, in north korea, there was a break through in tensions. the u.s. will deliver much needed food. this is the first major move by the north korean leader since he assumed power after his father's death two months ago.

off the coast of nigeria, a fire continues to burn on a collapsed natural gas rig. chevron insists the fire does not pose a threat to people nearby. but coastal residents have complained of trouble breathing and rashes. chevron, which is based in san ramon, says it will take care of any environmental problems. in spain, protesters ransacked a subway station in barcelona. they were part of a larger group that was demonstrating against cuts in education. some tried to get into a cell phone trade show, but were stopped. the efforts to revitalize san francisco's mid-market area is getting a boost. act plans to use the theater for smaller productions and rehearsals as a compliment to its larger theater. renovations are expected to cost about $18 million.
