share, staring at the golden gate, it's pretty tough to call this work, but work we did. trying to find the bay equivalent of the loch ness monster. look at the top of your screen. just to the right of center, and you'll see what's so special right there. a gray whale and her calf, waiting to exhale. news chopper 2 got the eye on our visitors. this isn't seaworld. the whales don't jump through hoops and certainly don't exhale on command. whale watching as we found out, takes patience. >> sometimes they just stay on top and look around, so the really fun. >> reporter: as long as you look from a distance. gray whales are protected by the marine mammal protection act. boats are warned not to get within 300 feet or face

between a mother and her calf. new information tonight on a double homicide in fairfield. tonight, police canvassed a community in search of a gunman. amber lee is at the condo complex where that shooting happened. neighbors say the sound of gunfire is becoming all too common. >> reporter: we're at parkway garden townhouse complex here in fairfield. police are collecting evidence as they investigate this double homicide. shortly before 5:00 this evening, police told us they responded to a shooting on el toro court. when officers arrived, they found two men dead from multiple gunshot wounds. a 24-year-old from fairfield, and an 18-year-old from east palo alto. >> when i hear stuff like this, oh, yes, it tears my heart up. >> reporter: family members arrived at the scene too distraught to speak with us on camera, but told us the two victims are cousins. police say they don't yet have

a motive for the double homicide. >> unfortunately, this neighborhood is prone to crime and violence. we've had other shootings, other homicides in this neighborhood in the past. so we're trying to determine what the situation is. >> reporter: police say witnesses saw a black man with long dreadlocks, with an athletic build, running from the scene with a handgun. a gold colored mercedes was seen leaving the area. police say this was towed away to be processed for evidence. one neighbor says he's had enough of the constant shootings and crime. he's moving out. >> when is this going to stop? when is fairfield going to be at peace? >> reporter: police have not yet released the identities of the victims. investigators say they canvassed the neighborhood. so far, no one has been arrested. amber lee, ktvu, channel 2 news. police arrested an oakland woman this evening, minutes

after a man was found in her home shot in the head with a rifle. the shooting happened at 10th avenue near east 22nd street around 6:30 this evening. investigators say the man had been shot more than once and died on the way to the hospital. police have not confirmed the woman was arrested for shooting the man, but did say the two were the only people in the apartment. convicted murderer, wesley shermantine says there may be a third speedway killer. he mentions the name, jason jones as another killer. he also refers to a previously unknown victim. a pregnant black woman, and suggesting his partner may have killed people in modesto as well. herzog killed himself in january. in san francisco, protesters rallied across the street in support of women's reproductive rights. >> our religious liberty is

nation faced, and the strides made during his presidency. it was directed by the same director who did al gore's film, an inconvenient truth. for california voters there's not much of a contest in the presidential race. a new poll tonight from the public poll institute of california shows president obama favored by 53% of the voters, and the republican candidate, whoever that may be has 37%. the undecides are at 10%. new details tonight in the domestic violence case against san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi. court documents show his former girlfriend claims he left her with a small bruise during an argument. christine said he later apologized when he saw the bruise on her arm. the prosecution says this shows new video of abusive behavior. from the night of a crash, or the night of a hit and run crash that injured a young boy.

operating at a faster clip than expected helped send stocks higher. the israeli president spent the day rubbing elbows with high-tech giants and entrepreneurs. he began his day at the launch in san francisco. the president said one of the reasons israel is so interested and invested in high-tech is because the country's greatest resource is its people. the 88-year-old president wrapped up his day with a meeting at google headquarters. in sunnyvale, neighbors say she just couldn't take it anymore. that's why they think a mother killed herself, and then her autistic son. it appears the woman was completely overwhelmed with how much care her son needed. >> friends, even strangers left flowers at this sunnyvale house today. >> it just seemed so sad. >> reporter: police call what happened here a tragedy.

>> it was a murder suicide, where the mother shot the 22- year-old son and then shot herself. >> reporter: they say lester hodgeens, a park ranger returned home last night to find the bodies of his wife elizabeth and severely autistic 22-year-old son, george. >> she was just at her wit's end. she said, i can't do this anymore. i just, i can't do it. i need help. >> reporter: neighbors say that's because george had aged out of the education systlast y devoted mother felt overwhelmed and depressed. >> we all are walking that same journey of parenting children with special needs. >> reporter: her son joe is now 37. trudy's autistic daughter lauren is now 27. both women knew elizabeth hodgeens at san jose's parents

help catch whoever vandalized an elementary school in richmond. the reward stands at $22,500. vandals broke into the school last month and damaged every room in a new multipurpose building. damages are estimated at $500,000. this years's commercial and sports salmon fishing season could be the best in years. salmon fishing in the ocean was shut down entirely in 2008 and 2009. this year the pacific fishery's management council has announced three possible dates for the start of the season. paying off with more adult salmon expected to spawn in northern california rivers this year. it was a nice day today. temperatures got into the upper 60s in some places. tonight, the winds died down. we've got a freeze warning in effect for the north day and

inside the car, police found three guns. tears today outside of a san francisco courtroom after a young man with no criminal record pleaded guilty to charges that he was driving drunk when he seriously injured a 9-year-old philadelphia phillies fan. tonight, david stevenson shows us dramatic video of what happened that night. >> reporter: video cameras inside this taxi cab showed some of the damage caused by andrew vargas. his white truck crashes into the cab and then takes off. he didn't just hit cars, prosecutors say vargas was driving drunk when he struck and severely injured 10-year- old ryan white of philadelphia who was in town for a phillies game, vs. the giants. vargas's mother and father came from mexico city today to hear their son plead guilty to driving under the influence, and inflicting great bodily

injury on ryan white. >> andrew felt terribly about what he had done. he wanted to take responsibility for his actions. >> reporter: he had no prior record, under the plea deal, he will be placed on five years probation, and serve out a year long jail sentence. he must undergo 9 months of dui counseling and perform 100 hours of community service. he will also have one strike under california's three strikes law, and will pay restitution to his victims. ryan white's family approved the deal, and says vargas has written a letter apologizing for his actions. >> neither ryan, or ryan's mother is comfortable yet reading that letter, i'm sure at some time they will be. >> reporter: prosecutors say ryan white is back in school, but still recovering from his injuries. formal sentencing for andrew vargas is set for april. david stevenson, ktvu, channel 2 news. the city of oakland is

suing an occupy protester demanding he pay for windows he broke during a protest. the incident happened on this riot that began on november 2 in the evening and continued into the next day. it claims caesar eguille broke the office window with a folding chair. he has not publicly commented on the lawsuit. the solano county sheriff's department released a sketch today that it says resembles a man who's bones were found in a home. the man is described as african american. 6feet tall with a slender build, short hair and no teeth. workers found his skeletal remains inside a home in vallejo. it appeared the man had been

>> the owners of infineon raceway are looking for a new name. speedway motorsports says naming rights currently owned by infineon are expiring. a search is now underway to find a company to buy the naming rights. california regulators are suing bp. accusing the oil company of selling dirty gas. the air resources board said the gas did not meet state clean fuel standards. bp allegedly sold 85 million gallons of dirty gas between december of 2008 and march of 2009. the gas was sold through storage tanks and pipelines in martinez. the suit is seeking unspecified damages. bp says it has not yet reviewed the lawsuit. it is a tense time for teachers across the state. a state law mandates that teachers are warned if they might be laid off in the fall.

newark school district says it could lose 26 school employees. even more positions could be lost if voters fail to approve governor brown's proposed tax increase in november, which would lead to more budget cuts. livermore and newark aren't alone. san francisco has already issued 500 layoff notices. state lawmakers agreed to carry out an audit of san jose's pension system. the city council approved a june ballot measure that would increase employee contributions and limit benefits for new employees. san jose officials estimate pension costs will range as high as $650 million in 2015. employee unions say that figure is inflated. the league of women voters and two prisoner rights groups sued california election officials today. in december, the california secretary of state issued a memo saying low level felons sentenced to county jail for

waiting for the stanford men's basketball team to make noise. down there at stanford, the women own that campus. but the men tonight denied cal the pac-12 title on sunday night. they jumped all over arizona tonight. the freshman, making sure they know who they will play. he hits six threes. 27 of them in the 1st half. it will be the cardinals vs. cal tomorrow night. i wouldn't call it alarming, but more like eyebrow raising, when you hear tim lincecum get lit up. he gives up 5 runs, 7 hits in just 2 innings to the rockies. good news though, the giants came back and won it 8-6. the a's fare slightly worse against the dodgers they manage only
