officer to pay an after midnight visit to a newspaper reporter's house, ordering him to change his story. ktvu's jade hernandez is live in berkeley, where she talked with both the chief and that reporter. >> reporter: jade. >> reporter: the reporter involved says the berkeley police chief overstepped his bounds and for the first time in his 23 years as a journalist, oakley felt intimidated. tonight the chief explained his motives. >> you need to know what happened. >> reporter: police chief meehan indicated that at this meeting emotions ran high, discussing the beating death of a berkeley neighbor. >> i have been dealing with this fairly emotional event that we had. >> reporter: afterwards an oakland tribune reporter in the crowd got a knock on the door the a police officer sergeant indicated that the reporter needed to amend his story. the chief disagreed with some of the facts. >> i saw this article come out late at neat and think, hey,

i'm going deal with it right now. >> reporter: today, as berkeley officers performed daley duties the chief at headquarters was busy with reporters explaining himself. >> the reasons really don't matter. it was just a significant error on my part. i put him in apawkward position. shouldn't have done it. >> reporter: by phone the tribune reporter doug oakley says he takes the chief's apology at face value. >> the chief wanted changes made right then and there at 1:00 a.m. i said, no. i can't do it. >> reporter: by 7:00 the next morning, oakley made minor changes, but it wasn't enough. >> he got his foot in the door and wanted more changes and something was wrong there. >> i feel badly because my heart and head, that is not where i was going with that, but i realize it could be perceived that way and feel badly about that and i can tell you that it won't happen again. >> reporter: the chief says he formally

apologized in an e-mail sent directly to oakley. oakley says he doesn't plan to sue and will report to work on monday. jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. berkeley's internal city manager released a statement saying, "there was no justification for contacting the reporter in this way. and the chief understands that the more appropriate response to his concerns about inaccurate statements in the alter should have been to wait until the following day and make contact by phone or e- mail." . >> a shooting in san francisco's mission district has left a man dead. had happened just before 7:30 last night near the corner of 23rd and shodwell streets. police say they found the victim shot to death need a car. he is only identifieds a 3-year- old 39-year-old man there. is still no word on a motive or suspect. oakland police say a man is in custody linked to an illegal

street race. officers recovered one badly damaged car around 12:30 a.m. police followed another vehicle suspected of taking part in that race. the chp picked up the chase and eventually arrested the suspect in castro valley. police are looking for a man who may have been trying to kidnap a child today in livermore. police say a man resembleling this sketch walked into the livermore tennis club. he pointed at a 4-year-old boy and said he was there to pick up his sob. when an employee asked him for verification, he was unable to produce it and left. the boy's mother said she did not authorize anyone to peck up her son. the man is described as in his 40s, 6' tall, 200 pounds with blond hair and long sideburns. a 92-year-old woman was severely burned inside a house fire in hayward, but she might have never made it out alive if not for her own son risking his life to save her. ktvu's patti lee is liver in san francisco, where she talked to family members holding vigil. >> we're live at st. francis

memorial hospital where family members are keeping watch offer their loved ones. >> reporter: luis ramirez checks the he used to call hospitals all afternoon to track down family members severely burned in this house fire. >> we got news that something happened and couldn't get a hold of them and they didn't know what happened he was at or what happened. >> reporter: according to family laurence laurenco aguiar was taking care of his family. neighbors told us that he heard aguiar calling to firefighters to help his mother. both suffered from severe burns and from smoke inhalation. >> most we know what the doctor told us is which is that grandma in-law is in critical condition and my father-in-law is in serious condition.

multiple storms to produce moderate to heavy rainfall. first thing tomorrow morning, scattered showers from san francisco and oakland northward. most of the region starting out sunday morning in the lower to mid-40s. this is the first system a fairly beak one, but still showers likely in the north bay. a chance elsewhere. monday not too much happening, but we do have action happening out in the pacific. storms developing and as a result, as we take this into next week, tuesday, rain increases, especially for the north bay. heavy rain possible wednesday into thursday. we'll have some breaks in the timeframe, but still could be tracking moderate to heavy rainfall, especially like now it looks like the wednesday morning commute could be an extra challenge. our rain will mean for snow in the sierra and snowfall will be on the order of 1-2', but snow levels will be going up, up to 7,000', because these were warmer storms that will be moving onshore. forecast model tomorrow morning, 9:00, the rain showers
