san francisco tonight, calling for justice in a racially charged case making headlines out of california. protesters are upset that an orlando area man has not been arrested for the shooting death of 17-year-old travon martin. george zimmerman is a neighborhood watch captain and says he fired in self-defense. police say zimmerman is white. his family says he is latino, travon is black. >> i say justice, you say now. justice. >> now! >> across the country, there were a number of marches and rallies calling for zimmerman's arrest. in new york city, martin's mother spoke to the crowd. >> it's the support that we need. we need this kind of support.

our son was not committing any crimes. our son is your son. i want you guys to stand up for justice, and stand up for what's rice. this is not about a black and white thing. this is about a right and wrong thing. >> martin's girlfriend told attorneys that she was on the phone with him just before the shooting. she said that martin was worried he was being followed. then she heard a man asking what he was doing in the neighborhood. then she says she heard travon martin being pushed. that's when she heard the phone go dead. 24-year-old tony jones was shot in the back, and arrested last month after running from officers. they had pulled over his car, claiming the vehicle was seen in an armed robbery. jones's attorney claims the officer used force and says the department tried to cover up

the circumstances surrounding the shooting. four oakland police officers killed in the line of duty on this date three years ago are being remembered today. rita williams explains how that changed this department three years ago. >> reporter: they call it oakland's 9/11. >> just to remember what this was like on march 21, 2009. >> reporter: that was the day sergeant john hege died. >> we miss him dearly. >> reporter: shot to death by a wanted parolee, along with three other oakland police officers. a loss still deeply felt today. >> these officers that died on march 21, they were my friends. i'm very close to most of them. >> we've lost more than those four officers. we've probably doubled the amount of officers that we lost. the incident was so traumatic, some of our officers were unable to return to work. >> reporter: bonded by blue,

oakland police filled an auditorium at headquarters today. in a private service, they vowed never to forget the officers sacrifices on 3/21. afterwards, they signed the back of a freeway sign dedicating a memorial bridge to the men. 49 years of service between them. heartfelt messages, not just about the way they died, but the way they lived. the sign now joins one already on interstate 580 at the keller avenue bridge. a permanent reminder of four men who died heroically. >> i would say they have the toughest job in america. >> reporter: tough and dangerous. >> the oakland police department has 150 fewer officers than it did three years ago. today you see hundreds lined up for a chance to join the force.

at 10:45 tonight, the reasons that recruits want to be with the police and how many will actually make it. a former prosecutor in contra costa county today said he is suing his officers. he's suing the d.a.'s office and martinez police saying the charges were politically motivated. gris et was accused of raping a colleague in 2008. gressett claims his supervisors were out to get him after he ran for district attorney three times. ross mirkarimi has been suspended, accusing him of misconduct. after reading those don'ts, tells us, what's being say -- documents, tells us what's being said. >> reporter: 14 pages laying out the ethics complaint against him, and that for now has forced him out of office. the complaint includes a letter

from mayor ed lee. saying, i'm immediately suspending you from office of sheriff. nine pages intel out the misconduct case against mirkarimi saying quote, he committed unlawful acts of violence, and falsely imprisoned his wife, ultimately resulting in his own imprisonment. this result is fundamentally incompatible withholding the office of sheriff. vicki hennessy was warn in to replace him. she down played her surprise election. >> this is not necessarily a celebration of me becoming sheriff, but it is me agreeing to be sheriff so we can get the work done. >> it's been my intention and i believe the intention of the rest of the city to get to work. >> reporter: mirkarimi also loses his $198,000 a year salary. his new attorney, david wagoner told me by phone tonight, he isn't ready to comment about

despite all the turmoil involving ross mirkarimi, the sheriff's department has continued running quietly behind the scenes. and noel walker found one area where the department is getting some praise. >> reporter: in a second floor conference room behind closed doors, san francisco's city and law enforcement met with the mayor to give their update on prison alignment. the mayor's appointed sheriff, vicki hennessy took the place of suspended sheriff, ross mirkarimi. >> i think the day-to-day operations are going to continue to work just fine. >> reporter: it comes on the heels of a new report from the american civil liberties union, criticizing the way some counties are allocating funds. while san francisco is an example of how a county should spend money rehabilitating inmates -- >> many other counties have chosen to invest in building more jail space. this is an incredible waste of tax dollars. >> reporter: in the area

allocated between 14 and 40% of their realignment money to add jail space. >> there's not enough money to basically warehouse, or lock all of the offenders up. >> reporter: critics say there needs to be a statewide shift in policy, and funding to keep jail cells from having a revolving door. today the d.a. told me, there are plenty of jail cells in san francisco and they want to keep it that way. new at 10:00, a group of san jose residents marched downtown, calling on the city to do more to crackdown on prostitution. about 25 people marched on south 1st street this evening. they say prostitution is blatant, and out of control in the area. they want the city attorney to use public nuance laws to crackdown on hotels where the prostitutes work. >> i live right downtown, and i want my city to be pretty. i don't need no prostitution in my backyard, or in my front door, they've got to go.

yelling incoherently. his wife blames stress. in news of the world tonight in brazil, federal prosecutors have filed criminal charges against 17 corporate executives following an oil leak. the executives are with bay area based chevron, and a swift company transocean. prosecutors say 110,000 gallons of oil seeped from cracks. at the united nations, russia and china changed position to join the rest of the security counsel and approve backing a peace plan for syria. the u.s., britain, and france also accused iran of smuggling weapons to the syrian government. in northwest china, a fierce sand storm is forcing schools to close, and in some places making driving impossible. officials say the winds are severe, and visibility has dropped to about 100 yards in some places. forecasters predict the sand storm will continue for the

on the same day that oakland remembered those four officers killed in the line of duty, the city also held a major recruitment drive for new officers. they received 2300 applications, but john sasaki tells us, only a handful will actually make us all the way onto the force. >> reporter: hundreds of people line up in downtown oakland today, ready to take the first step toward a life walking the beat. >> i'm pretty excited about this. nervous, at the same time excited. >> reporter: they took the written test to become a police officer. >> it would mean a lot to me, as far as like making a difference and things like that in the community. >> reporter: we met this oakland native who served in the air force, taking the test, she's thrilled with the chance to become a police officer in her hometown. >> it's a good place to be, if you're able to serve and protect, especially in a community that you come from. it's really an important thing. >> reporter: but this process

down a bill that would have kept administrators at public colleges in california from receiving pay raises during a tough economy. today's vote comes one day after two csu campus presidents each received 10% salary increases. senator leeland yi of san francisco authored the bill. >> the reports are that individuals are making 4, 5, 600,000. who knows if they're now also being supplemented with a couple hundred thousand dollars of private money. >> he may have a chance to reintroduce the bill in a couple of weeks. a jury awarded robin franco a settlement.

the case had been filed in 2008 and dismissed in 2010, but a new legal team was able to reopen the case and win the judgment. the number of emergency room visits relate today those popular energy drinks has gone up by 1,000%. the center for behavior health says in 2005, there were 1100 energy drink er visits. however by 2009, that number had increased to 13,000. one energy drink can equal as many as five cups of coffee. last december, a 14-year-old girl from maryland died from a heart attack after drinking several of those energy drinks. there were no winners of last night's $241 million jackpot. and that means the new jackpot is now expected to reach $290 million for this friday's drawing. as the lotto folks like to say, manage what a -- imagine what a buck can do. welcome back. we're getting a few light showers out there.
