dramatic photos as police move in to make an arrest, after and undercover operation involving atf agents erupts in gunfire outside hilltop mall. >> federal agents opened fire outside a chevy's restaurant in richmond, wounding one man, and arresting two more during an undercover operation.

live at the scene near hilltop mall, learning why the agents decided to fire their guns in such a public place. >> reporter: yeah, a busy restaurant at 3:00 this afternoon, but that agent felt threatened, and his backup came in blazing. >> a lot of yelling just get down. when i looked up, there's some blood outside. man it really knocked the wind out of me, i was spooked. >> reporter: outside, an undercover operation by the bureau of alcohol, tobacco and firearms went sideways. >> there were three suspects that posed a threat to our agent. >> reporter: the suspect was airlifted from the parking lot to a local hospital and is expected to survive. a second sppt was arrested at the scene. >> he's got his hands up? >> yeah, he has his hands up, he's on his knees. >> reporter: a third tried to hide in a nearby field, but he

was easily spotted. and residents had their cameras out as he was surrounded and surrendered within a half hour. employers and diners were grilled on what they saw, and then released. they wouldn't say what the men were being investigated for. >> what did you see, and what do you know? >> i said i didn't hear or see anything. >> reporter: chevy's customers told agents they only saw the aftermath. but this cell phone video hit a nerve. agents marched this man away when he tried to show it to us. a five hour investigation wrapped up with dogs searching this parking lot for evidence. the suspects are in their late teens, early 20s and there's no word if any of them fired a

shot. live in richmond, debra villaramon. a car drove by, and someone inside the car opened fire. one man was fatally wounded. police say he was in his 40s or 50s. the other man was not hit. this happened about 7:30 tonight. the car is described as an older white vehicle. at this point, police have no suspects. the suspect in san francisco's mass murder case made his first court appearance today. but a legal squabble forced a delay in the proceedings. we have new information tonight, ktvu's amber lee has been following the story from the start. >> reporter: julie, it's been five days since the family was killed inside this orange home. police told us, this crime tape will remain up for at least another week as investigators

are still piecing together what happened. tonight, a source told me it appears that the attack started sometime around 11:00 thursday night, and all five victims were dead by 2:00 a.m. we have learned investigators collected several control phones and the one belonging to vincent appears to be quote trashed, but that his wife's phone may have been used to lure him home. >> we suffered the most serious mass murder. >> reporter: chief greg suhr spoke about the heinous crime. >> please keep the deceased in your thoughts and prayers. >> reporter: our camera was in the courtroom this afternoon, as the suspect made his first appearance. we were not allowed to show his face. luke is accused of robbery. a source told us, luc was friends of vincent lay. both worked in the correction business, but not together. in court, luc asked for a

during the trial. the attorney will serve as an advisory council. a superior court judge said he will review the parameters for advisory council. a new development tonight involving the sexual assault of a woman in san ramon. police today released this sketch of the assailant. the attack happened yesterday morning when the man forced his way into the woman's home on montrose way after she answered the doorbell. the attacker is described as middle eastern, in his 40s, approximately 5'9", with a heavy build and short black hair and brown eyes. the owners of the south bay's newly built casino matrix are suing the city of san jose as part of a dispute that could delay its grand opening. forcing the judge to sign off on the owner's license. the owners claim the city and police department have stalled in making a decision. the dispute comes from the

owners quote own arbitrary deadline. today, a judge denied the casino owner's request to rush the hearing. exair corporation announced another round of layoffs. the job cuts will take place across all operating divisions and worldwide offices. the firm estimates the move will save $12 million a year. last month, exar eliminated another 53 jobs. there is newly released video tonight from florida of neighborhood watch captain george zimmerman on the night he shot and killed trayvon martin, and it doesn't show any signs of injury. zimmerman contends he shot martin from self-defense, after

martin got on top of him and began banging his head on the sidewalk. the police report did say zimmerman was bleeding from his nose and the back of his head. bobby rush created quite a stir on capitol hill. rush took off his jacket and then -- >> just because someone wears a hoody does not make them a hoodlum. >> rush was instructed to stop speaking. and then he was escorted out of the chamber for breaking congress's dress code. it requires men to wear coats and ties and bans hats. rush is a former member of the black panther who lost a 29- year-old son to gun violence. the trayvon martin case prompted song and discussion tonight in san francisco. that part of the story in just four minutes. in the south bay, the search for missing teen sierra

lamar took a turn today. hundreds of volunteers looked for clues that would help explain the teen's disappearance. >> reporter: she hasn't been seen for 12 days. authorities no believe sierra lamar was taken by someone from morgan hill or familiar with the area. >> she cowboy a victim of kidnap, abduction, or initially she could have voluntarily ran away, and at some point is now held voluntarily or against her will. >> reporter: the high school sophomore was last seen by her mother. investigators are looking into whether sierra was being watched, or someone knew she was home alone. yesterday's focus focused on reservoirs. using specialized dogs to detect human remains inside the water. roughly 300 volunteers also spent the day serving. some around anderson reservoir. including this morgan hill mother who's own daughter went missing for months, only to be

new at 10:00, members of glide memorial church gathered for trayvon martin. >> reporter: trayvon martin was an unarmed black teen shot and killed by a white man who was on neighborhood watch. in a world that can see things in black and white, today the congregation took a closer look at the shades of gray. knowing how to raise the roof in song. tonight, people came to lift their voices and settled down

promising to do something about it. and this wasn't the only call to action scheduled in san francisco. coming up on friday, the reverend jesse jackson's rainbow coalition will hold a holy in the hoody rally. a shooting tonight in oakland sent one man to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the head. the shooting happened just after 8:00 tonight on hamilton street near 71st avenue. police say the victim was sitting in his car, when someone shot him in the back of the head. yet the victim was able to get out of the car and walk about three quarters of a block to get help. he was taken to the hospital and police say the victim is in stable condition. police in oakland say within one week, two bike riding robbers struck four times. those robberies occurred in the downtown area. telegraph avenue, 19th street, and oak street. police say most of the victims were people talking on their cell phones as they walked.

in some cases, the men grabbed the phones right out of the person's hands and kept on riding. a jetblue captain who ran through the cabin screaming and urging passengers to pray was charged. federal authorities charged clayton osbon with interfering with a flight crew. passengers wrestled him to the ground after his copilot locked him out of the cockpit. caltrain came one step closer to becoming a faster, cleaner, and quieter rail system. this morning, approved an agreement with the high speed rail authority. the deal would provide $1.4 billion to upgrade and electrify the caltrain system from san francisco to san jose. the agreement now needs to be approved by the high speed rail authority. a young's ruling will keep private the names of certain

police officers involved in the uc davis pepper spraying incident. last week, police pepper sprayed occupy protesters and videos went viral. two names are already known. other officers had asked for their names to be kept sealed. the supreme court wrapped up its third and time day of hearings on the health care reform law. rita williams tells us the justices are divided over a question that's been debated in some form for over 200 years. >> reporter: outside the supreme court today, the number of demonstrators dwindled. inside, justices asked questions to help them decide whether all, part, or none of the overall will survive. >> the federal government is supposed to be a government of limited powers. the question is how far can those limited powers actually stretch. >> reporter: it's the same question that's been debated for 225 years, since the constitution was written.

at times, it's been interpreted differently by the court. >> this case has the potential to bring back the law to before franklin roosevelt's days. it's a big, big change that might happen. >> reporter: the issue now, does the federal government have the authority to require all americans to buy health insurance? if not, should the rest of the 2700 page law continue? liberal and conservative justices seem to disagree. >> does congress want half a loaf. is half a loaf better than no loaf? >> if you take the heart out of this statute, the statute is gone. >> reporter: most justices did not seem to agree with 26 states. arguing the federal government cannot coerce them to expand medicate for the poor. the supreme court is expected to issue its decision on all the issues of the past three days in writing the end of june. just as the presidential election is in the home

seafood at below market prices. berkely's organic pasta maker annie's cooked up an impressive ipo today. the stock rose 89%. it opened today at $19 a share, and closed at $35.92. they make a variety of organic and variety foods. the initial public offering raised $95 million for the company. shares in the healthcare communication software company closed at $21.03. it brought in about $94 million today. the wall street journal is reporting the highly anticipated facebook ipo will likely take place in may. and could be the largest of its

kind. facebook could be valued at $100 billion. u.s. stock markets posted loss losses today. the nasdaq fell 15. the declines came in spite of a rise in orders for durable goods last month. that's a sign businesses plan to continue investing. there was no winning ticket in last night's mega millions drawing. that means dreams of winning an enormous amount of money are still very much alive with the new jackpot reaching $500 million. we found people lining up at the jolly green liquor store. it sold a ticket worth $300,000 in last night's drawing. the next night for that jackpot is friday. it's apple's latest and greatest. up next, we investigate the ipad top selling accessory that a

so far this year, 16 nato service members have been killed. the fellow troops called guardian angels will watch over other troops. tomorrow, george herbert walker bush is expected to publicly endorse mitt romney for presidential nominee. romney was on the campaign trail in california and texas today. there have been several positive signs for romney this week. rick santorum said he would considering about his vice presidential running mate. and newt gingrich announced he was reducing his campaign staff. biden faulted romney for pushing tax cuts that fund the very companies that send jobs overseas. >> will we be a company that values the role of workers in the success of businesses and

jamie burton. the fire was areported this morning on chestnut street. firefighters say burton was found unconscious near the front of the house. the woman's caregiver who lives nearby was emotional when talking about the victim. >> she was 92 years old. everybody on the block knew her. a very nice lady. a very sweet lady. she didn't have any children, but she was very nurturing. >> she died at the medical center. she lived in the home for 55 years. firefighters suspect some items left on top of a heating vent on the floor started the fire. san francisco police are investigating a pedestrian accident that left a woman with injuries. a spokesperson for muni says initial reports indicate she may have been hit by one of their buses without the driver realizing it. san francisco police say at this point, it is unclear exactly what happened. a woman killed in a hit-and-

run collision in sunnyvale last sunday night has been identified. 28-year-old jennifer flores of san jose died after being hit by an suv near wild wood way. police say they've had conflicting reports as to whether flores was a passenger in the suv before she was hit. the suv is described as light colored. no arrests have been made. students at a hayward middle school, or at hayward middle school wore blue today to honor an 8th grader who died on the playground after suffering a seizure. he fell down and hit his head while playing basketball. he died at the hospital. an autopsy was performed today. the coroner says it's expected to take seven weeks to determine the cause of death. a series of explosions destroyed a fireworks factory in thailand. workers and people nearby had

to run for their lives. the fireworks in two huge warehouses exploded. the immediate area was evacuated. what set off the blast hasn't been determined of yet. so far, there are no reports of deaths or injuries. in japan, operators of the fukushima plant say damage is more severe than they thought. there is much less water than needed to keep it cool. the plant was damaged in last year's earthquake and tsunami. the condition of two other reactors is unknown. all three had meltdowns. in cuba, pope benedict xvi met with former leader fidel castro before returning home. the pope made critical components of castro during his trip. the pioneering feminist poet adrian rich has died.

resorts needed. as ktvu's ken pritchett reports, our snowpack is still well below normal. >> reporter: the word from skiers almost any day this month was about the same as it was today. >> fresh powder, all day, really deep. you've got 12 to 14 inches of fresh. probably snowed three or four inches today. >> reporter: winter sputtered in january and february. >> we're all speculating for the winter march. we're seeing it, and we're not done yet. >> reporter: john manson said the area received 183 inches of snow in march. more than half of the ski season total dating back to october. but a miracle march for ski resorts isn't quite the same when it comes to our water supply. the snowpack. 2011 was a heavy snow year. the sierra snowpack on april 1 stood at 165% of normal. today, the snowpack is just 50% of normal.

the good news is that reservoir levels are still healthy after last year. so the deluge of snow this march will ensure skiing until april and perhaps beyond. they're interested in the water content. how much water is there in the snowpack? between march 1, we only had 8 inches of water content. today we have 18 inches. at donner summit, ken pritchett, ktvu, channel 2 news. ♪ [ music ] rain to the snort, those showers will work their way slowly to the south as we work toward the end of the week. a few showers showing up in the north valley. for the most part, we're clear out there. mostly to partly cloudy. a little bit of coastal lingering around. the rainfall that we had certainly helped. we won't get to 100%.
