at&t. complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is the 10:00 news on ktvu channel 2. a tragic boating accident stuns san francisco's sailing community, what we've learned about the search for four missing sailors on board an ill fated vessel. good evening. i'm heather holmes. >> i'm ken wayne. we begin with developing news tonight. the coast card suspended the search for four missing sailors near the farallon islands and there are no plans to resume. the search lasted 30 hours and covered 5,000 square miles. also tonight we know the names

of those a board the sailboat that crashed during the race at the farallones. 46-year-old marc kasanin died in the accident. still missing are alexis busch of larkspur, alan cahill of tiburon, 25-year-old jordan fromm of kentfield and elmer morrissey ireland. rescued were james bradford of chicago, brian chong of tiburon and nick voss of sonoma. we have more from belvedere on the victims. >> reporter: there was hope but tempered with reality today, here at the san francisco yacht club which managed the race, they know better than most how unforgiving the ocean is. tonight the sailing community came together to pray. >> alex was my brother's soulmate. >> reporter: tears for alexis busch, one of the missing and the only one on the 38-foot sailboat. alexis shot this video on the same boat, the slow speed

chase, and put it on youtube. >> she was going to be my sister and it just seemed to be -- >> reporter: sadness and shock shared by so many who came to support each other at the vigil. confirmed dead marc kasanin, a belvedere native, 46 years old and an artist inspired by the bay he loved. >> it's going to be a big loss to this club as every single one of these people. it's a tough day. >> reporter: this photo captured the crew heading out to the farallones, a 54-mile race many had done before. >> these guys were just waiting for the cup. >> reporter: this man said several crew members planned to compete in the america's cup and this weekend's race was training. >> everyone else like turned back because the waves were too big, but these guys were pro sailors. >> reporter: and the lucky ones were hoisted into a helicopter as their boat crashed on the rocks below. witnesses said the first big

wave swept people into the water. the second hit when the survivors tried to go back for them. nick voss of sonoma survived with a broken leg, but he and the others weren't up to talking about what happened. friends say he and alexis busch were engaged. she is among the missing. this particular race is 107 years old and no one can remember anything close to this tragedy before. the sailors were wearing life vests and all weather gear, but nothing insulated enough to withstand frigid water for so long. we're live in belvedere, ktvu channel 2 news. in petaluma tonight police are investigating an attempted murder suicide. the gunman died of his wounds. in the last report, his intended victim was in critical condition. we have been talking with police about a possible motive and we are joined from the scene in petaluma where investigators remain this hour. >> reporter: you can see this is still an active crime scene.

petaluma police are still here at the scene of this shooting. friends say the victim was kim connover coming out of the law offices of divorce attorney jeff zimmerman. witnesses say her estranged husband kevin was in the street waiting for her with a gun. when petaluma police responded to the scene downtown, they approached in a defensive mode. all they knew was a report of shots fired, a gun lying on the sidewalk and two people on the ground. >> initially when the officers got here, they didn't know what they had. so they had two people that had gunshot wounds. they dragged them back to a safe location, not knowing if there was an outstanding third suspect. >> reporter: police say there was no third suspect. the shooter was identified as 41-year-old kevin connover and the e intended victim as 43-yea- old kim connover. the divorce attorney was secured at the scene and had nothing to do with the shooting

and is cooperating with the witness. the couple was going through a divorce and this woman said kevin wasn't handling it well. >> i lived in pet plume a my whole life. we -- petaluma my whole life. we used to go play pool and hang out. really concerned about the kids. that's really who suffers in all of this is it's really never about us. it always turns out to be about the kids. >> reporter: kevin connover was declared dead from a self- inflicted gunshot wound. at last report kim connover was in critical condition. san jose police have not released the names of a man and woman who died yesterday in an apparent murder suicide. the man shot the woman and then himself in the parking lot of a shopping center on east capital

expressway. their toddler daughter was in a safety seat in a nearby car at the time of the shooting and tonight is in the custody of child protective services. police have not released any other details. firefighters rescued a woman from a burning building last night in san francisco. the fire was reported around 10:00 last night at market and sanchez streets. firefighters say the blaze quickly reached two alarms. a rescued woman was taken to the hospital with critical injuries. firefighters don't know yet what caused the fire, but initial indications are it started in a kitchen. the victims of one of the worst mass murders in san francisco history were finally laid to rest today. as ktvu's ken pritchard reports, family, friends, politicians attended the services. >> reporter: until today what happened in this orange and yellow house in the engleside district has been marked only by flowers and notes on the sidewalk. this is where five people, a family of four and a friend, were found slain march 23rd.

today the victims of an unimaginable slaying were formally memmallized and laid to rest. >> the family had a lot of people who are concerned and care about each other and it was very sad. >> reporter: san francisco supervisor john avalos was one of several city officials who attended the service for 65- year-old hua shunla, his 62- year-old wife and their 37-year- old daughter and 32-year-old son vincent le and his girl friend, 32-year-old hia sui- chu. prayers were read for the victims in a buddhist endowest service. >> of course, it was a tragic event. however, the outpouring of support from all the people here make the event much easier. >> reporter: the victims were found in the home by a surviving daughter.

they had been beaten and slashed with a large bladed weapon. days later 35-year-old bin thai luc was arrested and charged with murder. >> there haven't been a lot of explanations going on about the motive. >> reporter: those details will emerge if and when there's a trial. the surviving family has maintained their privacy. this continued on this difficult day. ken pritchard, ktvu channel 2 news. a santa clara man is back in custody after he apparently walked away from main security prison camp yesterday -- a minimum security prison camp yesterday near the oregon/california border. he disappeared yesterday morning. authorities caught him near the camp today. he's serving time for spousal abuse and is set to be paroled in november of 2013. he could now face extra time on

escape charges. in san francisco one man is in custody tonight after a police chase ending in a crash. it happened after 3 a.m. near tennessee street and the waterfront. the car rammed into a tree, a street lamp and ended up knocking down a fence at a lumber supply yard. speeds during that chase reportedly reached 100 miles an hour. the driver tried to get away on foot after the crash but was caught by police, no word what started that pursuit. president obama is returning from a trip to colombia that was filled with problems. as he left the summit of the americas tonight, he called for a thorough investigation of the secret service scandal. >> if it turns out that some of the allegations that have been made in the press are confirmed, then of course i'll be angry because my attitude with respect to the secret service personnel is no different than what i expect out of my delegation that's sitting here. we're representing the people of the united states.

>> days before the president's arrival the agents allegedly brought prostitutes into their hotel rooms for a night of partying. 11 agents are suspend along with five military personnel. members of congress say they'll launch an additional investigation and may use polygraph tests. the biggest issue at the summit was cuba. outside protestors were furious that cuba was left out of this year's summit of the americas. inside the meeting ended on a sour note when the u.s. and canada refused to support cuba's entry next time against the wishes of dozens of other nations. tonight president obama said he welcomes moves towards democracy in cuba but that the communist nation still lacks basic human rights. and it's a final countdown of the tax deadline just around the corner and procrastinators are rushing to meet the deadline. this was the h&r block on van nuys avenue in san francisco this morning, about 20 people

filing into that small office. this year everyone has an extra two days to file their returns since april 15th, today falling on a sunday and monday is a holiday in washington d.c. you now have until midnight tuesday, april 17th, to file with no penalty. the senior tax advisor at this office says along with the change in the filing deadline, some people are confused about what they owe if they're unemployed. >> they thought well, i got unemployment. don't have to file. that's not true. the federal government wants you to file on that. >> many preparers have extended hours this week. this h&r block office in san francisco plans to stay open the next 24 hours today and tomorrow to accommodate those last minute clients. most post offices in the bay area will not be extending hours. none of the 41 offices in san francisco plans to stay open later on tax day. the only branches offering extended hours are the main post offices this year in

all of them in oklahoma. now residents in the midwest are forced to look at destruction left behind. >> reporter: this weekend's deadly storm system plowed its way through oklahoma, kansas, nebraska and iowa heading through more states sunday. woodward oklahoma was hardest hit with death and destruction. >> certainly our hearts and prayer goes out with those that have had loss of family members in this storm and those that have sustained injuries. we're going to do everything we can to help this community get back on its feet as quickly as possible. >> reporter: authorities warned millions of residents to make emergency preparations, something kansas governor sam brownback says is crucial for survival. >> i really think if people took the warnings very seriously, we had more notice on this system than you normally do. >> reporter: red cross emergency shelters opened in kansas for evacuated storm victims. homes and businesses suffered

damage across the region. >> it looks like a war scene down there. it actually looked like a pop had hit like over in afghanistan -- a bomb had hit like over in afghanistan. >> reporter: residents say it was a scary situation. >> i thought it was a train coming down the tracks over there and i looked out and i seen the funnel and then i started running through the house screaming marsha, marsha, i mean loud. i was scared. >> it gives you a whole new respect for tornadoes and how they can in an instant just destroy everything that everyone knew. >> reporter: the national weather service had more than 100 reports of possible tornado touchdowns. i'm elizabeth cordon reporting. a man shot at police and is now under arrest. investigators were at the scene all day yesterday after the friday night incident. police say it started around 10:40 in west oakland when the man tried to run during a traffic stop. the man hid in an apartment before opening fire on

officers. several officers fired back. the man was hit in the arm and leg. he is now facing charges of attempted homicide of a police officer. the attorney for fired sports talk announcer ralph barbeiri says his firing was despicable and illegal. knbr abruptly dismissed him last week. today his lawyer says he was wrongfully terminated and she's investigating a potential lawsuit to be filed at a later date. it's said the station fired the long time host because he is sick with parkinson's disease. the station said he was often late. the suspended sheriff is reportedly negotiating with his wife who is currently visiting her sick father in venezuela. it's said the couple's 2-year- old son is with her. lopez traveled with the permission of a family court judge. the report says her plans to

travel to venezuela are what triggered the confrontation with her husband on new year's eve that led to domestic abuse charges against him. new details into the investigation into the shooting deaths of two men's including a sheriff's deputy who were trying to serve an eviction notice on a person in modesto. the apartment's owner is james ferrario. neighbors say ferrario was financially troubled and afraid his apartment would be taken away from him. the suspect was found dead friday after a day long standoff. creative new tactics are now being used to try to find 15-year-old sierra lamar. >> reporter: the headquarters in morgan hill for the volunteer search effort for sierra lamar was a little less busy today. more than 150 volunteers had come through the doors by noon.

yesterday they had more than 400. >> our numbers do drop down and that's to be anticipated. it's not depressing in any way for the volunteers or the staff that's working behind the scenes. >> reporter: organizers are reaching out to local churches and organizations promising to bring in hundreds of volunteers when called. people from south valley community church have been coming out to barbecue the last few weeks serving more than 1,500 burgers and hotdogs to volunteers. >> the volunteers out in the field are in my opinion doing the hard work. we're first weekend out it was a cold, rainy saturday and we're around the warm fire. >> reporter: chili's bar and grill brought in food for the workers and dutchman's pizza had delivered more than 50 pizzas to the search center. the owner has a personal reason for being involved. >> i have two daughters in high school and they are sierra's age. it really hit hard with us. >> reporter: the most powerful tool for dutchman's pizza is

built into its business. they put a flyer on every bock they deliver. >> you can see it on the -- box they deliver. >> you can see it on the news and hear people talking about it, but until you see the picture right up close you really can't deal with everybody else's feelings. >> reporter: nothing of significance was found today. people are gathering at burnett elementary school for a balloon release say mean marking one month since sierra disappeared tomorrow. matt keller, ktvu channel 2 news. the army corps of engineers is preparing to plant 30,000 trees along sacramento levees, although the corps advised california levee managers to strip levees of preexisting trees. the corps said it sought and received an exemption to plant the trees after crews had removed trees in 2006 along the river to address erosion issues. they say the tree as long the river provide vital bird habitat and shade cool waters for migrating salmon. a bay area nonprofit is in the running for one of the

almost four years ago the bay area's red hot housing market froze. in the last few months, though, something extraordinary has started happening. in tonight's special report we look at the reemerging real estate market. >> reporter: it is the predawn hour in one of san francisco's trendiest neighborhoods, the point where the noe valley and mission meet. out of the dark the 20 and 30 something's gather silently at street corners. their ears are plugged against outside sounds. they don't make eye contact with anything that isn't an electronic screen. then it arrives, the unmarked tricked out bus that will take them for the hour long ride to the silicon valley where they will stare at bigger electronic screens for many hours working

at famous companies such as apple, google and facebook. these largely unpublished bus stops may be the single biggest reason behind a sudden and huge turnaround for the housing market in san francisco and perhaps the ignition point for a real estate revival across the bay area. >> i would say some of the regions that were harder hit we're seeing a rebound now and we're actually seeing five, six, seven, eight offers on houses where they might have only been one offer before. >> reporter: amanda jones sells real estate in san francisco and right now she's selling just about anything that doesn't move. >> when i meet with a client and we're thinking about listing their home, i ask if there's any gray, white or black unwhite buses that meet on corners and do they -- unmarked buses that meet on corners and do they see people with iphones and computers, does it look like a tech bunch? >> reporter: she is preparing this snowy valley home for sale

with the nice view of the park but no one is talking about that. it's about 3 blocks from a google stop and you can almost see their excitement crackling. >> i've seen houses maybe worth 1.5 million going closer to 2 million because we find out it's literally 2 blocks from a shuttle stop from google.. >> i have a lot of buyers that work in the tech industry that get huge bonuses. >> reporter: what does that mean for the rest of the bay area? independent data quick numbers show the once almost 50% drop in year to year prices are slowing to well less than 5%. >> they're going to have to leave san francisco and they're going to places like palo alto, marin county. so the trend will be for those areas to increase. >> reporter: that's exactly what happened to nicole newgerbauer. >> i would say i looked at over 150 houses. >> reporter: later she said it may have been just more than 100 houses, but she's certain

they looked for a place to buy every weekend for eight solid months and made eight solid offers. >> we were looking for so long. we had some friends having a party in san mateo. we came through. there was some open houses. we walked through the open house and thought i, this is a nice house, put in an offer and bought it. >> reporter: more than a few people told us the prospect of facebook going public is helping drive a buying frenzy for fear the stock market will make overnight millionaires of even more competing homebuyers. in san francisco david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. >> currently in california mortgage holders may get help from a homeowner bill of rights as attorney general kamala harris prepares a package of state bills modeled on a recent settlement with national banks. the protection would include a single point of contact for loans in trouble and a right to sue renters to stop foreclosures. harris will talk regarding those bills during a committee hearing this week.

the banking industry opposes key parts of her proposal. in 2012 election news tonight mitt romney's campaign focuses on the gender gap. their presumptive republican nominee did not make appearances today, but there was plenty of talk in washington about his campaign statements that job losses during the obama administration have overwhelmly and unfairly affected women. there is also speculation about romney's pick for vice president with florida senator marco rubio denying that he is on the short list. the campaign won't comment on romney's possible choices. newt gingrich declared today he's the last conservative standing in the race. the former speaker campaigned in north carolina today ahead of a primary on may 8th. despite numerous calls to quit and support mitt romney, gingrich says he's the one person who can debate president obama. rick santorum suspended his campaign last week and ron paul has all but disappeared from the campaign trail. meantime tea party favorite

michele bachmann all but endorsed mitt romney today and said she's seriously considering support for the man she called the eventual nominee. the congresswoman whose bid for the presidency ended in january said she's looking for party unity come the convention. bachmann added she wants her voice heard in making policy. the obama administration fired back at the romney campaign today for its statements that 92% of the jobs lost during the obama administration were held by women. >> ridiculous and very misleading way of looking at the recession. you have to look at the whole duration of the recession which started in 2008. it was a year in the making before president obama came into office and it was very damaging to everybody, families, men, women across the country. >> timothy geithner said the early job losses were felt mostly by men with cuts in construction and industry, but later women were strongly affected with job cuts in education. geithner added currently the overall economy continues to improve. he didn't do it in record

time, but tonight a 4-year-old boy is celebrating after crossing the finish line in a 1 mile run. look at this guy. little ollie vasquez was more than one of 1,000 runners. ollie suffers from ctd, a rare genetic disorder, but that didn't stop him from training for the rub with his walker. >> oliver -- run with his walker. >> oliver gives us so much faith. he's a go getter. we have high hopes that he will walk one day. he's very motivated. that's one of the best things. >> this isn't the first thing ollie crossed the finish line. he completed the same run last year. the sharks are getting ready for pivotal game three of their playoff series and their coaches take on the nasty turn their series took in st.

on the path to success. each of our children has hopes and dreams for their future. help them get there. become a mentor. well, last week at this time i was standing right here describing a weather pattern that included cold temperatures and some heavy rain out there. this week the complete opposite, our weather pattern changing quite a bit. right now it's pretty quiet with just part i had to mostly cloudy skies, the high -- partly to mostly cloudy skies, the high clouds focused up in the north bay. clouds are moving into parts of sonoma and napa county. this was the scene across the bay. you can see high clouds moving into parts of the bay area but still a beautiful sunset taking us into a sunday evening and a pretty warm day. you can see all the 60s and a few spots topped out in the

lower 70s for antioch and livermore, pacifica 59 degrees and patchy fog keeping the beaches on the cool side this afternoon. forecast headlines for tonight, patchy fog will be developing. tomorrow some morning clouds, skies becoming partly sunny and this is the developing headline, a big warming trend showing up over the next few days. in fact, the warmest locations eventually this week inland could be approaching the 80- degree mark. now tomorrow morning, partly to mostly cloudy skies, patchy low clouds, concentrated coastside and right around the bay and most areas starting out monday morning in the 40s. so here you can check out the pattern in the pacific as high pressure remains in command of our weather, storm track up to our north, some rainfall now and the chance of rain primarily north of cape mendocino as we head into your monday. for us skies becoming partly to mostly sunny in the afternoon hours, temperatures up a few degrees which will translate to a range like this for monday,

upper 50s, 60s, warmest locations lower 70s and the dry weather patternens it. we do get a break from the rain -- pattern continues. so we do get a break from the rain. tomorrow a few high clouds clipping parts of the north bay by 2:00 tomorrow afternoon and mostly sunny observations out there and a few extra clouds could approach the region heading into monday night. forecast high tomorrow afternoon a few more 70s showing up on the maps, fairfield, concord and brentwood. san francisco 63 degrees, san jose around 70 and morgan hill tops out 72 degrees. the giants playing tomorrow at at&t park, playing the phillies and you can see this. mostly clear skies, temperatures aren't 56 degrees at first pitch right after 7:00. here is a look ahead, your five- day forecast. temperatures come down just slightly, very slightly by tuesday and we begin the advertised warm-up wednesday,

league. well, it was one of the first sports to air on local television and roller derby still holds fond memories for all these who grew up watching it here on ktvu channel 2 and now as joe fonzi tells us roller derby has a new face and a new following. >> reporter: when you think of roller derby, you probably think of that and the legendary ann cavella. if you're a little younger, you might remember it this way. the bay area and its bombers was once a roller derby mecca. you might not know it's becoming that again. there are four teams that make up a leaguen in as the bay area derby girls -- league known as the bay area derby girls. they're aware of their sport's root, but things are considerably different if 2012. >> every time that i mention that i play -- in 2012. >> every time that i mention

that i play roller derby everybody asks is it like what we used to watch? >> back then it was more of a show. i liken it to a wwf on skates and nowadays our sport is very athletic. >> reporter: the track is flat, not banked, but the principle remains the same. it all starts with the jam and you score points when your jammer laps the field and passes an opposing player. the truly competitive current day roller derby means that attractive people who have a history -- it's attracted people who have a history of other organized sports. >> i played gym sports all my life and now it's hard to find a competitive team sport. i went to a derby and i pulled one of the girls over and said i was born to do this. how do you do it? >> reporter: how you do it is you sign up, train and if you're good enough, you might be chosen by one of the four teams with very distinctive names, the san francisco she
