afghanistan. manuel vasquez was 22 years old. his body was found in a guard tower and his death is now under investigation. vasquez had been in afghanistan since last august. friends and neighbors are remembering an oakland had had victim. 42-year-old joselito was shot yesterday. that's near the mcarthur b.a.r.t. station. police say he was on his way home when he was killed. neighbor describe anabel as a family man who never got involved in any activity that went on in the neighborhood. >> i was shocked. i heard somebody had got, whatever happened around the corner but i never would have thaeugt -- thought it would have been him. >> at this point no arrests have been made. dozens of people turned out for a community meeting tonight

at st. paul' paul's episcopal church. one item that came up with project seize fire and anti gun violence program. organizers pointed to its success in other cities and they think it could work in oakland. on wall street, stocks moved higher for a third consecutive day. the dow rose 113 points, nasdaq gained 20. fueling the rally an up tick in pending home sales with better than expected home sales. amazon is one of the companies that beat expectations. the online company topped analyst predictions. amazon also said it expects its revenue to grow in its second quarter. amazon closed at $223. that's a gain of more than 13%. after an all day meeting the sacramento planning commission voted late tonight

in favor of a medical center project. many oppose the project arguing it will increase traffic and won't provide enough jobs. nonetheless the planning commission approved the environmental impact report tonight and recommended the project to the board of supervisors. cpmc told us this is a giant step forward. bay area drivers have been warned, the signs are up. the question now is how bad will traffic be this weekend? and as we move toward the bay area weekend. temperatures are on the increase

a major artery linking san francisco to the north bay will be shut down in less than 24 hours from now. ktvu's amber lee is in san francisco where residents are preparing for congestion and delays this weekend. amber-- >> frank, if you take a look behind me you can see that heavy machinery has already been brought in to down doyle drive. tonight a business owner and others told us they welcome the improve but not the inconvenience that this project may cause. the owner told us three clients have cancelled their appointments this weekend over concerns of gridlock. >> my concern is that my employees which i have 15 of

don't have any parking, they're not going to be able to get to work on time. and my customers are going to be making the appointments on time because there's going to be so much traffic. >> reporter: doyle drive will be closed tomorrow night so that crews can tear down the unsafe structure. >> where they may expect some public with the motoring public they add a police officer. give yourself time and plan for heavy traffic, other wise try to do something closer to your home. >> reporter: this couple told us they still plan to attend the beer festival at fort mason. >> probably take a cab if anything. i don't want to drive and be in this area and get stuck in traffic. >> reporter: this san francisco woman told us she's glad many signs are up warning about the closure and that she has changed her mind about visiting friends at marin. >> i'm also grateful for the

right now involving a homicide in oakland: police received a phone call shortly after 9:00 tonight about a man down in west oakland. police have told us the victim was 17 years old. he was shot at least once in the chest. police say it appears there was some sort of confrontation and then the teenager was shot. at this point police say they have no suspects. after more than a year of surveillance authorities conducted a massive pot raid on a warehouse that investigators say was being used as a marijuana distribution center. that raid began last night in an industrial area of oakland at 89th avenue and g street. ktvu's jade hernandez has exclusive video of the raid and tells us why police were called back this afternoon even after they had cleared the scene. >> pictures may be worth a thousand words but these reflect drugs with more than a million dollars. oakland police provided us this glimpse of 23-gallon bags holding 15 pounds of dried processed pot, along with

handguns, assault guns, helmets and vests. >> this is something we typically don't see is a ballistic face shield. >> reporter: the police also recovered $40,000 in cash and plants. they arrested 11 people. >> this is one of the largest marijuana recoveries in recent years in the city of oakland. >> reporter: surveillance video from across the street captured action minutes from the raid. ktvu exclusive video showed numbers before taking down part of the fencing. inside surveillance equipment protected the goods. but this man who was arrested last night said this is a medical marijuana grow operation. and today he was a victim after at least one of two break-ins at the warehouse this afternoon. >> we go inside and there's people running out of the building one of them threatening, pointing a gun at me. >> reporter: police arrested two teenagers for breaking an

kaiser family foundation says consumers and businesses should receive an estimated $1.3 billion in rebates from insurance companies this year. the obama health care law requires insurance companies to spend a minimum portion of consumers premium on medical care. if insurancers don't immediate what are called medical loss ratios they have to issue rebates. there's fresh snow isn't the sierra. the lifts were not running in borreal. they were closed today due to the weather. it wasn't a big storm but a light snow fell throughout the day in the higher elevationings. -- in the higher elevations. and there was rain late last night and early this morning as it moved through it left accumulations of a quarter of an inch in parts of the north bay. nearly a half inch up in the

if someone got sick from food poisoning while eating out at a restaurant you would probably want to know about it right. everyone though restaurants are encouraged to report when that happens they actually don't have to. and ktvu's mike mibach tells us why and also what that could mean for food safety when you eat out. in tonight's special report.

>> reporter: the sound of a kitchen. and the smile from a single sensuous bite. dining out is a delicious treat. >> it's so creamy. >> reporter: let's say you and some friends want to go out to lunch. everybody had fun. but then you realize that 10 hours later everyone got sick from the party. you go to the restaurant and let them know that everybody got sick. now should the restaurant let the public know about the situation? the answer right now is no. >> i would have thought that was something that was already enforced. >> reporter: 3,000 people in the u.s. die from food borne diseases every year. 128 people are hospitalized and 48 million get sick. that is one out of every six people. yet the california retail food code does not require restaurants to report alleged cases of food bourn illnesses that customers even in groups bring to their attention.

francisco chief officer. aragon says in the face of delfina, a producer brought in tainted lettuce. dr.aragon says the lack of communication between the restaurant and the health department is a concern but he does not believe it shows a gap in food safety. >> i've been the general manager for over three years, i feel this may be too called. >> reporter: tadich is one of the busiest restaurants. power says from his perspective restaurants across the state should not be mandated to report every alleged food poisoning complaint. >> i do think that would be unfair. >> reporter: so does rob black executive director of the golden gate restaurant association. black like powers says it's too hard to enforce because more often than not the complaints come in too late. >> and it would be very difficult for a customer to know where perhaps that contamination came. whether it was from their own home.

since 2006. a north bay husband and wife says they have no idea why someone repeatedly shot their home. it happened last night on robin hood drive. more than 10 bullets hit the house. investigators today used string to try to find the exact location where the shooter was standing. sharon bliss was in a backyard when the shooting happened. >> i thought it was a lightbulb that went off. then i heard more and more shots. i didn't really know what happened until i came in here. >> reporter: some of the rounds went through the window striking walls. it's clear someone was targeting that home but the bliss family says they have no idea who would want to harm them. a los gatos family that was victimized twice by arsonists are now offering a reward to find out who did it. the house is still not habitable. last october there was another fire and the family's dog was

injured. they're now offering a $10,000 reward. fire officials they suspect a teenager or young adult is responsible. protesters announced grand plans today for may day demonstrations including a growing picket line at the golden gate bridge. may day typically recognizes organized labor but this year it's morphed to include occupy protesters. one protest is planned for downtown oakland and a march is planned for san jose. workers with the golden gate bridge district are planning to picket and occupy oakland announced it plans to join them. the state of california is coming up short on the revenues needed to pay its bills. the franchise tax board is reporting that personal income tax receipts toáaled six preponderate $45 billion by wednesday. and they're hoping it'll hit 9.4 billion by monday. they expect california to be two to $3.5 billion short. the assembly today passed a

the fremont school board is using the help of police dogs to cut down on drug use. the superintendent says the dogs will be used in locker rooms and parking lots only. the canines cannot be used to sniff students unless given consent. school officials will be able to search lockers, students and belongings if there is quote reasonable suspicion of drugs. the top administrator after milpitas high school is concerned about security on campus and the guards who are supposed to be keeping watch. the principal at milpitas high say officers don't cover hot spots when they're supposed to. students tell us the guards have make inappropriate remarks to students. the superintendent may look for a new security company. >> i believe he completely agreed with the sentiment of the board which we need to go out and ask for bids for another security firm. >> the school uses guards from

universal security. we contacted the company for a response but our call was not returned. a cyber security bill is on its way to the senate but president obama is threatening to veto it. the bill passed the house today despite the fact that it does not protect families. the ftc says the days of companies tracking your every move on the internet are coming to an end. we talked to the chairman of the federal trade commission. >> there's a few things that needs to be ironed out but we're very optimistic it will happen and by the end of the year, consumers will be able to opt out of tracking on the web. >> the deal will resemble the do not call program. right now internet companies

tonight we have pictures of a huge 20-foot great white shark that was caught in mexico. ktvu's sal castaneda tells us why researchers think it's the same shark spotted off the northern california coast several years ago. news of the capture of the big shark spread quickly among the research community. the female shark shown here on

you tube weighed some 4,000 pounds and was about 20 feet long. it was accidently caught by a mexican fisherman last week using a small boat called the panga in the sea of cortez. at about the same time a woman who says she was the wife of a fisherman reached out to researchers sean vandel. >> i received the photo and notification and then boom. then comes the announcement, news story south and moving north about this big shark these guys caught. >> reporter: and the big shark could be one he tagged near ano nuevo island. >> well if it's the tag that she's showing me, that's actually my tag. that tag have only been placed on ano nuevo island. >> reporter: he uses the information to monitor the life history of sharks including growth, travel and health. he says this group of tags was placed sometime between 1995 and 2003.

the founders of journey. the concert is sold out. montros was considered an innovative guitarist performing with his band that carried his name and with other groups. the rain has ended for now. we're heading for a bay area weekend and things are looking pretty good for all parts of the bay area. temperatures on the increase. we have wind gusting, i'll move it over here. the winds are gusting pretty strong. they're coming in at 40 miles per hour. the sustained winds are 16 miles per hour. we have clearing winds out of the west. we're straightening things out. all the rain is gone. things start to warm up tomorrow. but overnight tonight it's going to get really cold. chilly, with temperatures into the 30s, upper 30s in the cool spots. as you go tomorrow you will notice the cold in the morning and the kids need to take the

jackets to school. the weekend is going to be mostly sunny and warmer. highs from today are not that much warmer. lots of upper 60s and a few low 70s. continued warming as we go into saturday and sunday. the weather system moves off, cool air is in place. as the cool air moves out, high pressure settles in and when it sinks it warms. the pattern repeats itself over and over again. you get basically the same result. that's how high pressure works especially this time of year. temperatures on friday and saturday on the increase. looks like sunday will probably be the warmest day over the weekend with low 80s there. the computer model brings rain to the north. everybody but up. up in portland, the oregon area. it's all north and east of the bay area. tomorrow, big baseball game tomorrow.

the padres and giants. temperatures in the 50s. by the 9th inning you're at 56 degrees so it's going to be pretty cool out there. daytime highs tomorrow are going to look like this. mostly in the 60s and 70s. a real nice day. 68 at richmond. fog not really an issue at the coast tomorrow. take a look at the santa clara valley. good air quality. tree pollen got washed out with this last rain so if you're a pollen sufferer you're getting a little bit of break here. you will notice it tomorrow. the pollens are going to start to rear themselves, the tree pollens any way. the five day forecast looks good. i think just as julie said in the 5:00 and 6:00. just in time. a little late during the week and weekend gets here and we warm up. >> and the week has gone by like that.

a good samaritan stepped up to help a navy veteran overcome a painful loss. earlier this month someone stole world war ii memorabilia from michael demsey's truck. michael santos says that story broke his life so he got him a replacement. >> that story just touches your heart. the belief that jim harbaugh and brain trust can do no wrong. it's so strong that any shock or disaappointment the 49ers have in them picking a relative unknown with their number one pick quickly replaced by hey, it's harbaugh. he's got to know what he's doing right. 49ers raises many eyebrows
