a mother and daughter spent a weekend fundraising to cure cancer .... we'll tell you how crafty they got to raise the funds. and a campus fundraiser was a smashing success -- we'll tell you what it was for... update news starts right now.
1:31 am
hello and welcome to update news... im michelle rivera. and i'm brandon castillo... thanks for joining us. with thousands of san jose state students graduating in just a few weeks... many will leave school with tens of thousands of dollars in debt. the cost of a higher education has forced many students to worry about how long it will take to pay it all off. jansey lagdamen has the story. " tiffany fadrilan is graduating with a liberal studies degree in may. however, that's not all she's gaining... she will have thousands of dollars in debt from student loans to pay off. i had to get student loans because i pretty much just couldn't afford school. my dad you know he's the one who supports me through school, but he had a lot of bills to pay for like the house and everything. fadrilan has used loans during the five years it took her to complete her undergraduate degree but she is not entirely done with them... she just got accepted into a teaching credential program. the program that i'm applying for is suppose to cover 11,00 to 19000 dollars of my student loans but it depends whether you qualify or not. but some students are not in the same situation.
1:32 am
according to sjsu student advisor, michael randle students should really analyze their educational costs. financing your education is like buying a car buying a house or anything else. you finance a mercedes you are going to have a big car payment, you finance a ford escort, your payment will probably not be that much. there are ways to avoid student loan debt. if i had a plan for paying it off , then what i would've done is i would've graduated from college i would've moved back home my first year, i would just work that first year save my money and just pay the loan off. but for students like fadrilan, the accumulation of student debt for an education is well worth it. in the long run i don't think i regret my student loans because i know i'll be being a teacher, i'll be helping out kids and doing what i love."
1:33 am
school debt can take decades to pay off ... but it can be done. president obama and his wife paid off their student loans just eight years ago. with graduation around the corner students may be wondering if this economy can provide them with the career they've dreamed of. the career center hosted a workshop to teach students how to find a job in this economy with over 3-million students graduating in the united states being prepared is just one step students can do to get noticed by companies employment specialist jill klees says it won't be easy -- but a career is possible. " sure there's competition, there's lots of people looking for jobs but there's opportunity there. so if you position yourself properly and market yourself properly, then you're going to get a job." during the workshop --- klees reinforced practical job search strategies to be successful in today's changing economy. there are many preconceived notions about islam and muslims, but is it all true? students attended an event on campus focused on the stereotyping of islam and muslims. the s-j spirit group hosted the islam and muslims: myths vs. truth event at the student union on tuesday to address the issue.
1:34 am
the event was lead by professor of arabic and middle eastern studies awad awad. " the biggest misconception they have is again it depends who you ask in what area. some of the questions that i get are as ignorant as do muslims worship the moon god which they don't obviously." the event started off with students making a list of ideas they had about islam and muslims, which were then further explained by professor awad. then the students discussed topics such as islamic beliefs, culture and history. imagine losing the ability to communicate with practically everyone around you. for one african refugee... it is now his reality. jessica savage has the story. " (nat sound of raymond speaking) raymond djasrabe is trying to find his own american dream. "i want to own my own house where my brother and i can live together." the problem is djasrabe's situation is rarer than that of most refugees... so buying a home could be difficult.
1:35 am
"i haven't seen a case like raymond umm for one thing just the language barrier is huge." he can only speak sango... the primary language of the central african republic... his native country. (nat sound of raymond and the translator talking) outside of it... a very small percentage of people speak it in the world. (nat sound of ari and raymond walking to the car) he says he wants to branch out and learn english to be as independent as possible. ari spalding is djasrabe's case manager and says learning english will benefit him greatly. "my goal is to find permanent, long term community, friendships umm support for raymond." but in the meantime... spalding is putting together a community of sango speakers for raymond to make him feel comfortable in this transition period. and even though djasrabe knows he must ajust to this new world he lives in... he plans on returning to africa... but only after he finds a job in america. in san jose jessica savage update news."
